Approximately 60 000 events have been collected in a spark chamber experiment at the CERN Proton Synchrotron which studied elastic diffraction scattering of π--p and p-p at incident momenta of 8.5, 12.4 and 18.4 GeV/c and of π+-p at 8.5 and 12.4 GeV/c. Magnetic analysis of the incoming and diffraction scattered particle, together with measurement of all angles, permitted each event to be determined as elastic subject to three constraints, so that the inelastic background was rejected with. high efficiency, even at the larger momentum, transfers. Much of the data have been processed by the CERN Automatic Flying-Spot DigitizerHPD. A detailed description of the experimental technique and of the methods of analysis is given. The results, together with data from lower energies, confirm the remarkable energy-independence of the shape of the pion-proton diffraction scattering peak up to |t| = 1.5 (GeV/c)2, wheret is the square of the four-momentum transfer, over a range of pion energies from 2 to 18 GeV. Proton-proton scattering does however appear to show a shrinking diffraction peak. In general, the data agree with other experiments using both counter and bubble chamber techniques, but some differences do appear. During the experiment, data were taken which set an upper limit of 2·102 μb/(GeV/c)2 on the differential elastic cross-section dσ/dt over a range of |t| from 20.9 to 23.4 (GeV/c)2 at 13.4 GeV/c incident pion momentum.

Photoproduction of rho0 and rho- Mesons at 3-GeV

Bapu, P. ; Endorf, R. ; Meadows, B. ; et al.
Phys.Rev.D 15 (1977) 26, 1977.
Inspire Record 123802 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.24621

The photoproduction of ρ0 and ρ− mesons has been studied at 3 GeV in the reactions γd→dπ±π−, γd→psnπ+π−, and γd→pspπ−π0. For ρ0 and ρ− production in these reactions we present the total and differential cross sections, the decay angular distributions, and the spin density matrix elements. The photoproduction of the ρ0 is found to be consistent with s-channel helicity conservation and is dominated by natural-parity exchange. The ρ− meson production has approximately equal natural- and unnatural-parity-exchange contributions. The unnatural-parity-exchange contribution is consistent with one-pion exchange and is used to estimate the value of Γρπγ.

Backward Production in pi- p --> p pi+ pi- pi- at 8-GeV/c

We have studied backward baryon and meson production in π−p→pπ+π−π− at 8.0 GeV/c using a streamer chamber triggered by the detection of a fast forward proton. Our data sample (1227 events) displays prominent N*ρ and N*f quasi-two-body production. These states are investigated with regard to the peripheral nature of the production mechanism and sequential decay of the excited baryon and meson systems. The quasi-two-body production of N*ρ and N*f intermediate states is consistent with u-channel proton exchange as the dominant production mechanism. In the π+π−π− mass distribution we observe a 3- to 4- standard-deviation enhancement at M3π=1897±17 MeV/c2 with full width at half maximum = 110 ± 82 MeV/c2, but find no but find no evidence for backward A1 or A2 production. We observe Δ++(1232) production in the pπ+ effective mass distribution.

Backward Production of a Spin Parity 1+ rho pi Enhancement at 1.04-GeV

A spin-parity 1 + ϱπ enhancement is observed for the 3π mass spectrum in the reaction K − p → Σ − π + π + π − where events with a small (K − → Σ − ) momentum transfer are selected. The mass (1040 MeV) and width (230 MeV) of this enhancement are reminiscent of the A 1 → ϱπ bump which has mainly been observed in the diffractive-like processes. The cross section for this enhancement at 4.15 GeV/ c incident K − momentum is (3.6 ± 0.5) μ b.

From an experiment done with the CERN Omega spectrometer, triggered by a fast forward proton device, we present results on the differential cross section d σ d u for π − p backward elastic scattering. The d σ d u distribution agrees with an A e Bu law. The compilation of existing results shows a discrepancy between results but the ( d σ d u ) u=0 data fit perfectly an s 2 α 0 −2 dependence, as predicted by a single Δδ Regge trajectory exchange. A search for the reaction π − p → d p , with a fast forward deuteron, which can be produced by a double-baryon exchange mechanism, gives cross-section upper limits of ∼1% of the backward elastic cross section.

A Comparison of the Shapes of pi+ p and p p Diffraction Peaks from 50-GeV/c to 175-GeV/c

The ratio of π+p to pp elastic scattering is found to be smoothly varying over the range −t=0.03 to 0.4 GeV2. It is well fitted by a single exponential, indicating the forward behavior must be quite similar for the two reactions.

Photoproduction of the psi (3100) Meson at 11-GeV

The photoproduction of the ψ(3100) meson from a beryllium target has been measured using an 11.8-GeV bremsstrahlung beam. The energy and angular dependence of the measured spectra may be obtained from an elastic nucleon cross section of the form dσdt=(1.01±0.20)exp[(1.25±0.20)t] nb/GeV2. This cross section is exceedingly small in comparison with those of the other vector mesons.

Resonance Production in the Reactions pi+ d --> p(s) p pi+ pi- and pi+ d --> p(s) p pi+ pi- pi0 at 11.7-GeV/c

Results are presented for the reactions (1) π+n→pπ+π−, (2) π+n→pπ+π−π0, at an incident pion beam momentum of 11.7 GeV/c. Both reactions show considerable resonance production. Reaction (1) is dominated by ρ0 and f0 production and there is evidence for the variation of the ρ00 width with momentum transfer. Decay angular distributions are presented for the dipion system observed in reaction (1). Reaction (2) shows the production of both dipion and tripion resonances and there is evidence for the associated production of\(\mathcal{N}\)-resonances with the dipion resonances.

Investigation of (K pi) Mass Enhancement Near 1870-MeV in the Reaction K- p --> K- pi+ n at 10-GeV/c and 16-GeV/c

The Aachen-Berlin-CERN-London-Vienna collaboration Grassler, H. ; Laven, H. ; Otter, G. ; et al.
Nucl.Phys.B 125 (1977) 189, 1977.
Inspire Record 119121 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.35408

An enhancement in the (K − π + ) mass distribution at 1871 ± 10 MeV with full width of 285 ± 40 MeV is observed in the charge-exchange reaction K − p → K − π + n at 10 and 16 GeV/ c . The energy dependence of its cross section, the shape of the differential cross section d σ /d t and the decay angular distributions are consistent with a production mechanism by pion exchange. No significant enhancement at the same mass is seen in the non-charge exchange reaction K − p → (K π ) − p. The experimental evidence is reviewed and it is suggested that there may be more than one K ∗ enhancement in the 1700–1900 mass region.
