The polarization of the proton from the γ+n→p+π− reaction in deuterium has been experimentally measured at 90° in the center-of-mass system for photon energies near 715 MeV by using a counter technique to observe the left to right asymmetry in the scattering of the protons from carbon. A value of -0.26±0.06 was observed, with the direction of the polarization defined by n^=(k^×q^)|k^×q^|, where k^ and q^ are, respectively, unit vectors in the directions of the photon momentum and the pion momentum. The result is interpreted as an indication that the interference between the P32 (325 MeV) and D32 (750 MeV) resonances may not be the dominant contribution to the polarization at this energy. Significant contributions from either an interference between the P32 (325 MeV) resonance and the possible new resonance suggested by the π, p scattering measurements, or an interference between the D32 (750 MeV) and F52 (1050 MeV) resonances, or a combination of these two possibilities seem to be required.

In a sample of B mesons from the decay of the ϒ(4S) produced in e+e− collisions at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, inclusive protons, antiprotons, lambdas, and antilambdas have been observed. Lower limits to the B-to-baryon branching ratios are derived.

We have performed an experiment to study the reaction π−+p→η+n near threshold, preliminary to a forthcoming measurement of charge asymmetry in η-meson decay. The η was identified by the velocity of the associated neutron. We detected neutrons produced in the forward hemisphere in the center-of-mass system corresponding to the most energetic neutrons in the laboratory. Data were taken at π− momenta between 670 and 805 MeVc. The four neutron detectors made it possible to detect neutrons at angles of 0° to 21° from the incident pion beam. We present backward differential cross sections for both pion charge exchange and η production calculated from the data. We looked for η′ at pion momenta of 1.5 BeVc and observed none. We obtained σ(π−p→nη′)≤60 μb.

Elastic Scattering of 600-MeV Protons from H, D, He-3, and He-4

The elastic scattering of 600-MeV protons from light nuclei has been studied at the National Aeronautics Space Administration Space Radiation Effects Laboratory (SREL) synchrocyclotron. Differential cross sections have been obtained for the scattering of protons from hydrogen, deuterium, helium-3, and helium-4. Polarization was measured for deuterium and He4 nuclei. The p−p cross-section data are in excellent agreement with the predictions from the Livermore phase shifts. Small-angle p−D, p−He3 elastic scattering data are compared with calculations based on the multiple-scattering theories of Watson and Glauber.

The Exclusive Channel pi- pi- pi+ p in pi- p Interactions at 147-GeV/c.

The results of a study of the reaction π-p→π-π-π+p at2 147 GeV/c carried out at the Fermilab Proportional Wire 30″ Bubble Chamber Hybrid Spectrometer are reported. More than 92% of the cross-section ((670±41) μb) for this reaction is contained in those for proton and pion diffraction dissociation. The cross-sections for pion diffraction events with three-pion invariant mass in given regions are in agreement with values obtained by extrapolation of fits to data at lower incidentpion momenta. ρ0π- events make an important contribution in the A1 and A2 mass regions, and the data are consistent with contributions from f0π- in the A3 mass region. The cross-section for proton diffraction events is in agreement with a smooth extrapolation of the data at lower momentum.

Inelastic electron Scattering from Hydrogen at 50-Degrees and 60-Degrees

Inelastic electron scattering cross sections have been measured for four-momentum transfers between 4.1 GeV 2 and 30.5 GeV 2 . At the large scattering angles of this experiment, the dominant contribution to the cross section comes from the W 1 structure function. In the conventional scaling variables, x and x ′, this structure function does not exhibit scaling behavior, and at fixed x or x ′ it is found to decrease with increasing four-momentum transfer.

Omega-Meson Production by Virtual Photons

Qausi-elastic ω production by ep scattering in the kinematic region 0.3. < Q 2 < 1.4 GeV 2 and 1.7 < W < 2.8 GeV was studied using a streamer chamber at DESY. The production angular distribution for γ V p → ω p has a strong non-peripheral component for W < 2 GeV. The ω production cross section falls by a factor of 4 as W changes from 1.7 to 2.8 GeV. In contrast the cross section for ω production with | t | < 0.5 GeV 2 is W independent between 1.7 and 2.8 GeV and for W > 2.0 GeV consistent in both W and Q 2 dependence with the predictions of a model based on one-pion exchange and diffraction.

Comparison of the Line Reversed Channels anti-p p --> pi- pi+ and pi+ p --> p pi+ at 6-GeV/c

Differential cross sections have been measured for p¯p→π−π+ (1) and its line-reversed partner π+p→pπ+ (2) in the range tmin>t>−1.5 (GeV/c)2 at 6 GeV/c. Clear structure is seen in the differential cross section for Reaction (1) at t∼−0.4 (GeV/c)2. However, this feature is quite different from the striking dip seen in (2) at t∼−0.15 (GeV/c)2, indicating a failure of line reversal and disagreement with simple Regge models.
