Measurements of the angular distribution of the cross section for the photoproduction of the K+Λ system from hydrogen have been made in the c.m. angular interval from 15° to 85° at a photon energy of 1200 MeV. The reaction was identified by detecting the K+ mesons with a magnet spectrometer and a velocity selection system consisting of two Čerenkov counters. The angular distribution at this energy is very similar to that at lower energies in that it is peaked forward and is easily fit with a quadratic in cosθc.m.. Special emphasis was placed on the forward direction in an attempt to find evidence for the one-K-exchange pole. A Taylor-Moravcsik analysis of the data is presented, but the results are inconclusive.

Protons of the internal circulating beam of the Bevatron were scattered in a polyethylene target. Both scattered and recoil protons were detected by scintillation counters at angles which define elastic proton-proton events. An internal counter was located within a few inches of the beam to permit measurements at laboratory scattering angles as low as 2°. Absolute values are based on the calibration of the induction electrode that monitors the circulating beam. Total elastic cross sections obtained by integrating the differential spectra are 17, 10, and 8 mb at 2.24, 4.40, and 6.15 Bev, respectively. The experimental angular distributions are consistent with the prediction of a simple optical model with a complex index of refraction at short range.

Pion-Proton Charge-Exchange Scattering from 500 to 1300 MeV

Differential cross sections for the reaction π−p→π0n were measured at nine incident-pion kinetic energies in the interval from 500 to 1300 MeV. The negative pion beam from the bevatron was focused on a liquidhydrogen target completely surrounded by a cubic array of six steel-plate spark chambers. The spark chambers were triggered on events with neutral final states. Charge-exchange events were identified from the one-shower and two-shower events in the spark-chamber pictures. By the Monte Carlo technique, the π0 distributions were calculated from the bisector distributions of the two-shower π0 events together with the observed γ-ray distributions of the one-shower π0 events. These π0 distributions were fitted with both Legendre-polynomial expansions and power-series expansions by the method of least squares. The extrapolated forward differential cross sections are in good agreement with the dispersion calculations. The Legendre coefficients for the differential cross sections in isospin state T=12 were obtained by combining our results with available data on π±p elastic scattering. In the light of existing phase-shift solutions, the behavior of these coefficients is discussed. The D5F5 interference term that peaks near 900 MeV is verified to be in isospin state T=12 only. We report here also the total neutral cross sections and the cross sections for the production of neutral multipion final states 2π0n and 3π0n. The 4π solid angle and the calibrated energy response of the spark chambers contribute to the accuracy of the results.

The interaction of 1.0-, 1.25-, and 2.0-Bev antiprotons with protons has been studied with the aid of a 4π solid-angle scintillation-counter detector system. The measured total cross sections at the above energies are 100, 89, and 80 mb, respectively. At each energy, the charge-exchange cross section is approximately 5 mb. The total elastic cross sections are 33, 28, and 25 mb, respectively, at the three energies. The angular distribution of elastic scattering has been fitted with a simple optical-model calculation.

Measurement of the Transverse Momentum Distribution of W Bosons in pp Collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

This paper describes a measurement of the W boson transverse momentum distribution using ATLAS pp collision data from the 2010 run of the LHC at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 31 pb^-1. Events from both W -> e nu and W -> mu nu are used, and the transverse momentum of the W candidates is measured through the energy deposition in the calorimeter from the recoil of the W. The resulting distributions are unfolded to obtain the normalized differential cross sections as a function of the W boson transverse momentum. We present results for pTW < 300 GeV in the electron and muon channels as well as for their combination, and compare the combined results to the predictions of perturbative QCD and a selection of event generators.

The Production of the Omega0 Meson in the Reaction pi+ d --> p (Spectator) p Omega0 at 4-GeV/c

The reaction π + n → ω 0 p has been studied at 4 GeV/ c giving a total cross section of 313 ± 26 μ b. The sample of about 3500 ω 0 events produced in the forward direction has been used to determine the differential cross section and the spin density matrix elements. The effective trajectory for unnatural parity exchange has been determined by a comparison of ϱ 00 d σ /d t at different energies. A comparison of ϱ 00 d σ /d t has been made with the similar data for ϱ 0 production in this experiment allowing π-B exchange degeneracy and ϱ-ω interference to be investigated. These methods result in an unnatural trajectory consistent with that expected for the B-meson. A further study of ϱ-ω interference has been made by comparing the reactions π + n → ω 0 p and π − p → ω 0 n at similar energies. Our results on ω and ϱ production are combined with data on K ∗0 and K ∗0 production at 4 GeV/ c and an SU(3) sum rule relating the production of these four mesons is shown to be satisfied.

ASYMMETRIES IN CHARGED PION PHOTOPRODUCTION ON NUCLEONS BY 16-GeV POLARIZED PHOTONS

Asymmetries in charged-pion photoproduction from hydrogen and deuterium have been measured with 16-GeV linearly polarized photons. Considerable energy dependence is seen in the natural-parity contribution to the π−π+ ratio from deuterium, and in the unnatural-parity part of the cross section for γn→π−p. The energy dependence of this latter cross section is consistent with the expected from a conventional pion Regge trajectory.
