Charged-Pion Photoproduction from Deuterium with Polarized Bremsstrahlung

Measurements have been made on the ratio of pion-production cross sections at right angles to and along the photon electric-field vector. The positive and negative pions were first momentum-analyzed and counted by means of a counter telescope. Data have been taken at 45, 90, and 135° in the c.m. system, and at proton energies of 225, 330, and 450 MeV. A comparison of the data is made with the dispersion-relation calculation of McKinley.

POLARIZATION OF XI0 AND LAMBDA HYPERONS PRODUCED BY 400-GEV/C PROTONS

The polarization of Ξ0 and Λ hyperons produced by 400-GeV protons interacting with a beryllium target has been measured in the projectile fragmentation region. The Ξ0 polarization agrees in sign, magnitude, and kinematic behavior with that of Λ. The target dependence of these Ξ0 and Λ polarizations was also investigated with use of Cu and Pb targets.

POLARIZATION OF LAMBDA0 HYPERONS IN INCLUSIVE PRODUCTION BY 12-GEV PROTONS ON TUNGSTEN

The authors have measured the polarization of 2.4×105 Λ0 hyperons in inclusive production by 12-GeV protons on tungsten at three production angles, 3.5°, 6.5°, and 9.5°. In terms of Feynman's xF and transverse momentum of Λ0, the kinematical range is 0.3<~xF<~0.8 and 0.4<~pT<~1.6 GeV/c. The observed polarization does not depend strongly on xF and increases linearly with pT to 16% at pT=1.0 GeV/c, showing a tendency to level off above that point.

Λ∘ polarization in inclusive production by protons on iridium has been measured at 28.5 GeV/c over the region 0.55 GeV/c<~P⊥<~1.6 GeV/c. The polarization rises from (-12.6±5.5)% at 0.55 GeV/c to (-33.4±4.6)% at 1.6 GeV/c. Significant differences from previous measurements at other energies with different targets are observed, particularly at low P⊥.

Elastic Scattering of 600-MeV Protons from H, D, He-3, and He-4

The elastic scattering of 600-MeV protons from light nuclei has been studied at the National Aeronautics Space Administration Space Radiation Effects Laboratory (SREL) synchrocyclotron. Differential cross sections have been obtained for the scattering of protons from hydrogen, deuterium, helium-3, and helium-4. Polarization was measured for deuterium and He4 nuclei. The p−p cross-section data are in excellent agreement with the predictions from the Livermore phase shifts. Small-angle p−D, p−He3 elastic scattering data are compared with calculations based on the multiple-scattering theories of Watson and Glauber.

Measurement of the Spin Spin Correlation Parameter C(SS) in p p Elastic Scattering at 6-GeV/c

We have made the first measurement of the spin-spin correlation parameter CSS in pp elastic scattering at 6 GeV/c over the |t| range from 0.05 to 1.5 (GeV/c)2. The measured CSS data points are all negative, and their absolute values increase with |t|. The results are compared with some existing attempts to describe the pp scattering process.
