Muon-pair production has been measured in pCu, pU, OCu, OU and SU collisions at 200 GeV per nucleon. The cross sections are compatible with the atomic number dependence ( A proj. A targ. ) α where α =0.91±0.04 for the J/ψ resonance and α =1.01±0.04 for muon pairs produced in the mass continuum between 1.7 and 2.7 GeV/ c 2 .

The production of μ−e+ dileptons by muon neutrinos is studied in a high-statistics bubble-chamber experiment. The experiment consisted of exposing the Fermilab 15-ft bubble chamber filled with a heavy Ne-H2 mix to a wideband neutrino beam. In a total sample of 146 700±11 700 charged-current interactions, 461 events with an e+(Pe+>300 MeV/c) and a μ− are observed. The rate for μ−e+ dilepton production in measured to be (0.42±0.06)%. The energy dependence of this rate is presented. The kinematic distributions for the μ−e+ events are consistent with charm production and subsequent semileptonic decay. A total of 60 KS0 and 31 Λ0 decays were observed in the μ−e+ event sample. The measured rates for neutral-strange-particle production are 0.78±0.12 K0K¯0's and 0.19±0.04 Λ0's per μ−e+ event. Finally, rates for Λc+, D0, and D+ production in charged-current νμ interactions are derived. They are found to be (4−2+10)%, (1.7−0.7+0.5)%, and (1.3−0.5+0.4)%, respectively.

Measurements of the proton structure function $F_2$ for $0.6 < Q^2 < 17 {GeV}^2$ and $1.2 \times 10^{-5} < x <1.9 \times 10^{-3}$ from ZEUS 1995 shifted vertex data are presented. From ZEUS $F_2$ data the slopes $dF_2/d\ln Q^2$ at fixed $x$ and $d\ln F_2/d\ln(1/x)$ for $x < 0.01$ at fixed $Q^2$ are derived. For the latter E665 data are also used. The transition region in $Q^2$ is explored using the simplest non-perturbative models and NLO QCD. The data at very low $Q^2$ $\leq 0.65 {GeV}^2$ are described successfully by a combination of generalised vector meson dominance and Regge theory. From a NLO QCD fit to ZEUS data the gluon density in the proton is extracted in the range $3\times 10^{-5} < x < 0.7$. Data from NMC and BCDMS constrain the fit at large $x$. Assuming the NLO QCD description to be valid down to $Q^2\sim 1 {GeV}^2$, it is found that the $q\bar{q}$ sea distribution is still rising at small $x$ and the lowest $Q^2$ values whereas the gluon distribution is strongly suppressed.

W production and the search for events with an isolated high-energy lepton and missing transverse momentum at HERA.

A search for the leptonic decays of W bosons produced in the reaction e^+ p\to e^+ W^\pm X at a centre-of-mass energy of 300 GeV has been performed with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 47.7 pb^-1 . Three events consistent with W\to e\nu decay are found, giving a cross section of 0.9 +1.0 -0.7 \pm 0.2 pb, in good agreement with the Standard Model prediction. The corresponding 95% C.L. upper limit on the cross section is 3.3 pb. A search for the decay W\to \mu\nu has a smaller selection efficiency and yields no candidate events. Limits on the cross section for W production with large hadronic transverse momentum have been obtained. A search for high-transverse-momentum isolated tracks in events with large missing transverse momentum yields results in good agreement with Standard Model expectations, in contrast to a recent report by the H1 collaboration of the observation of an excess of such events.

Transverse momentum distributions of eta mesons in near threshold relativistic heavy ion reactions

Transverse momentum spectra of η mesons have been measured near the free nucleon-nucleon production threshold in the heavy ion reactions Ar40+ Canat, Kr86 + Zrnat, and Au197+ Au197 at 1.0A GeV and also in Ar40+ Canat at 1.5A GeV. The measured transverse momentum distributions are compared to model calculations. The relative abundance of Δ(1232) and N(1535) resonances excited in the collision is deduced. A comparison to pion data reveals scaling with the transverse mass of the emitted meson.

We present first results on the total photoproduction cross section measurement with the H1 detector at HERA. The data were extracted from low Q 2 collisions of 26.7 GeV electrons with 820 GeV protons. The γp total cross section has been measured by two independent methods in the γp center of mass energy range from 90 to 290 GeV. For an average center of mass energy of 195 GeV a value of σ tot ( γp ) = 159 ± 7 (stat.) ± 20 (syst.) μb was obtained.

The results of total cross section measurements for theνμ,\(\bar \nu _\mu\) interactions with isoscalar target in the 3 – 30 GeV energy range have been presented. The data were obtained with the IHEP-JINR Neutrino Detector in the “natural” neutrino beams of the U-70 accelerator. Neutrino fluxes were obtained by averaging the spectra, based on the calculations with the use of the experimental data on secondary particle yields from the target and muon fluxes measurements in 9 gaps of the muon filter, as well as the spectra determined from quasi-elastic events and spectra defined by extrapolating differential distributiondσ/dy in the regiony=0. The significant deviation from the linear dependence forσtot versus neutrino energy is determined in the energy range less than 15 GeV.

Neutrino and antineutrino total charged current cross sections on iron were measured in the 100, 160, and 200 GeV narrow band beams at the CERN SPS in the energy range 10 to 200 GeV. Assuming σ/E to be constant, the values corrected for non-isoscalarity are σv/E = (0.686 ± 0.019) * 10−38 cm2/ (GeV · nucleon) and σv/E = (0.339 ± 0.010) * 10−38 cm2/ (GeV·nucleon). Between 50 and 150 GeV no energy dependence of σ/E was observed within ±3% for neutrino and ±4% for antineutrino interactions.
