We present a measurement and comparison of the χc1 and χc2 production cross sections determined from interactions of 300-GeV/c π± and p with a Li target. We find χc1χc2 production ratios of 0.52−0.27+0.57 and 0.08−0.15+0.25 from reactions induced by π± and p, respectively.
The polarization parameter P(t) for the reaction π−p→π0n has been measured at 3.5 and 5.0 GeV/c over the range 0.2<~−t<~1.8 (GeV/c)2. The two γ rays from the π0 decay were detected in a large lead-glass hodoscope. The results agree with the positive polarization values found in earlier Argonne National Laboratory data at −t<0.35 (GeV/c)2. P(t) drops to a small value near t=−0.6 (GeV/c)2 and remains the same out to t=−1.8 (GeV/c)2.
Measurements of inclusive cross sections at 100 GeV/c are presented for the double-charge-exchange reactions a+p→π−X with a=π, K, or p. The measurements covered a kinematic range in the Feynman x variable of 0.3<~x<~0.9 at transverse momenta of 0.3 and 0.5 GeV/c. A model summing the contributions from resonance production and from inclusive central-region π− production is used to fit the data and demonstrates the importance of resonance production via one-pion exchange for large values of the Feynman x.
Single- and double-pion inclusive spectra are presented for 100-GeV/c p¯p interactions and compared with related pp data. Double-fragmentation distributions are shown to be understood within a Mueller-Regge framework as a product of single-fragmentation distributions. Consideration of pp and p¯p−pp distributions shows factorization to hold in Pomeron and in Reggeon exchanges independently.
We have investigated the inclusive production of γ, KS0, Λ0, and Λ¯0 in 100-GeV/c p¯p interactions in the 30-in. hydrogen bubble chamber at Fermilab. We present various inclusive distributions and compare them with corresponding distributions in 100-GeV/c pp interactions and lower-energy p¯p interactions. We find some evidence for Σ(1385) production but none for K*(890) production. We find evidence for a nonzero Λ0 polarization of -0.45 ± 0.21.
We have measured the polarization of Λ and Λ hyperons produced by 800 GeV protons on a Be target at a fixed targeting angle of 4.8 mrad. Comparison with previous data at 400 GeV production energy and twice the targeting angle shows no significant energy dependence for the Λ polarization. This is in striking contrast to the energy dependence found for σ + and Ξ − polarizations. We find no evidence for Λ polarization at 800 GeV.
We have measured p−d inelastic scattering at small momentum transfer by detecting the slow-recoil deuterons from a deuterium-gas-jet target. The coherent diffraction dissociation of protons on deuterons was studied in the region 0.03<|t|<0.07 (GeV/c)2, 1.4<MX2<4 GeV2, and for energies from 50 to 275 GeV. In this region, the diffractive cross section exhibits structure and is dominated by an enhancement at MX2∼1.9 GeV2.
We report results from a measurement of the inclusive process p+d→X+d in the region 0.03<|t|<0.12 (GeV/c)2 and 5 GeV2<MX2≲0.11plab for incident proton momenta from 150 to 400 GeV/c. We find that in this region, the differential cross section d2σdtdMX2 varies only slowly with energy, falls exponentially with |t|, and behaves to a good approximation as 1MX2. The measurement was performed at Fermilab by detecting slow-recoil deuterons from a deuterium-gas-jet target placed at the internal beam of the accelerator.
We have observed diffraction dissociation of KL0 mesons with a carbon target into the exclusive final states KS0π+π−, KS0ω, and KS0φ. The diffraction production cross section for these states is not strongly dependent on the incident energy, varying at most by 30% between 75 and 150 GeV. The mass distributions do not change appreciably as a function of laboratory energy. The ratio of the diffractive mass-threshold production of K*±π∓, KS0ρ, KS0ω, and KS0φ is compared with previously obtained lower-energy data.
The polarization PΞ− of Ξ− hyperons produced by 800-GeV protons has been measured for xF from 0.3 to 0.7 and pT from 0.5 to 1.5 GeV/c. PΞ− has a pT dependence similar to that of the Λ but has a different xF behavior. Also, an energy dependence of PΞ− has been observed.
With 4.36×106 events, spin precession in a magnetic field has been used to measure the magnetic moment of the Ξ− hyperon as -0.6505±0.0025 nuclear magnetons.
We present a measurement of the ratio σB(W→eν)σB(Z0→e+e−) in p¯p collisions at s=1.8 TeV The data represent an integrated luminosity of 21.7 pb−1 from the 1992-1993 run of the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We find σB(W→eν)σB(Z0→e+e−)=10.90±0.32(stat)±0.29(syst). From this value, we extract a value for the W width, Γ(W)=2.064±0.061(stat)±0.059(syst) GeV, and the branching ratio, Γ(W→eν)Γ(W)=0.1094±0.0033(stat)±0.0031(syst), and we set a decay-mode-independent limit on the top quark mass mtop>62 GeV/c2 at the 95% C.L.
Hadroproduction of the Jψ and ψ′ states has been studied in 300-GeV/c proton, antiproton, and π±Li interactions. Both total and differential cross sections in xF and pT have been measured for the Jψ for the π±, proton, and antiproton interactions. The ratio of ψ′ to Jψ production has been determined for the four types of beam particles.
A measurement of the QCD jet-broadening parameter 〈QT〉 is described for high-ET jet data in the central calorimeter of the Collider Detector at Fermilab. As an alternate approach to clustering analysis, this method involves the use of a global event parameter which is free from the ambiguities associated with the definition and separation of individual clusters. The parameter QT is defined as the scalar sum of the transverse momentum perpendicular to the transverse thrust axis. Parton-level QCD predictions are made for 〈QT〉 as a function of ET, the total transverse energy in the events, and suggest that a measurement would show a dependence on the running of the strong coupling constant αs. Comparisons are made to first-order QCD parton-level calculations, as well as to fully evolved and hadronized leading-log simulations. The data are well described by the QCD predictions.
Inclusive jet production at s=1.8 TeV has been measured in the CDF detector at the Fermilab Tevatron p¯p Collider. Jets with transverse energies (Et) up to 250 GeV have been observed. The Et dependence of the inclusive jet cross section is consistent with leading-order quantum-chromodynamic calculations, and comparison with lower-energy data shows deviations from scaling consistent with QCD. A lower limit of 700 GeV (95% confidence level) is placed on the quark compositeness scale parameter Λc associated with an effective contact interaction.
Measurements of inclusive transverse-momentum spectra for KS0 mesons produced in proton-antiproton collisions at s of 630 and 1800 GeV are presented and compared with data taken at lower energies. The ratio, as a function of pT, of the cross section for KS0 to that for charged hadrons is very similar to what is observed at lower energies. At 1800 GeV, we calculate the strangeness-suppression factor λ=0.40±0.05.
We present the dijet invariant-mass distribution in the region between 60 and 500 GeV, measured in 1.8-TeV p¯p collisions in the Collider Detector at Fermilab. Jets are restricted to the pseudorapidity interval |η|<0.7. Data are compared with QCD calculations; axigluons are excluded with 95% confidence in the region 120<MA<210 GeV for axigluon width ΓA=NαsMA6, with N=5.
We present measurements of the pseudorapidity (η) distribution of charged particles (dNchdη) produced within |η|≤3.5 in proton-antiproton collisions at s of 630 and 1800 GeV. We measure dNchdη at η=0 to be 3.18±0.06(stat)±0.10(syst) at 630 GeV, and 3.95±0.03 (stat)±0.13(syst) at 1800 GeV. Many systematic errors in the ratio of dNchdη at the two energies cancel, and we measure 1.26±0.01±0.04 for the ratio of dNchdη at 1800 GeV to that at 630 GeV within |η|≤3. Comparing to lower-energy data, we observe an increase faster than ln(s) in dNchdη at η=0.
We report results from a search for neutrino-induced neutral current (NC) resonant $\Delta$(1232) baryon production followed by $\Delta$ radiative decay, with a $\langle0.8\rangle$~GeV neutrino beam. Data corresponding to MicroBooNE's first three years of operations (6.80$\times$10$^{20}$ protons on target) are used to select single-photon events with one or zero protons and without charged leptons in the final state ($1\gamma1p$ and $1\gamma0p$, respectively). The background is constrained via an in-situ high-purity measurement of NC $\pi^0$ events, made possible via dedicated $2\gamma1p$ and $2\gamma0p$ selections. A total of 16 and 153 events are observed for the $1\gamma1p$ and $1\gamma0p$ selections, respectively, compared to a constrained background prediction of $20.5 \pm 3.65 \text{(sys.)} $ and $145.1 \pm 13.8 \text{(sys.)} $ events. The data lead to a bound on an anomalous enhancement of the normalization of NC $\Delta$ radiative decay of less than $2.3$ times the predicted nominal rate for this process at the 90% confidence level (CL). The measurement disfavors a candidate photon interpretation of the MiniBooNE low-energy excess as a factor of $3.18$ times the nominal NC $\Delta$ radiative decay rate at the 94.8% CL, in favor of the nominal prediction, and represents a greater than $50$-fold improvement over the world's best limit on single-photon production in NC interactions in the sub-GeV neutrino energy range
The polarization of Ξ¯ + hyperons produced by 800-GeV/c protons in the inclusive reaction p+Be→Ξ¯ ++X has been measured. The average polarization of the Ξ¯ +, at a mean xF=0.39 and pt=0.76 GeV/c, is -0.097±0.012±0.009. The magnetic moment of the Ξ¯ + is 0.657±0.028±0.020 nuclear magneton.
Proton-deuteron elastic scattering has been measured in the four-momentum transfer squared region 0.013<|t|<0.14 (GeV/c)2 and for incident proton beam momenta from 50 to 400 GeV/c. The data can be fitted with the Bethe interference formula. We observe shrinkage of the diffraction cone with increasing energy equal to (0.94±0.04)ln(s1 GeV2) (GeV/c)−2. This shrinkage is greater than that observed in pp elastic scattering. The ratio of the elastic to the total cross section is approximately 0.1 and independent of energy above ∼ 150 GeV. In order to extract information on pn scattering we fit our data using the Glauber approach and a form factor which is the sum of exponentials. The values we obtain for the slope parameter in pn scattering are sensitive to the details of the inelastic double-scattering term.
We present high-statistics results on the reactions a+p→c+X where a and c can be any of π±, K±, p, or p¯. The data were taken at 100 and 175 GeV/c incident momenta using the Fermilab Single-Arm Spectrometer operated over the kinematic range 0.2<x<1.0 and pt<~1.0 GeV/c. Investigating the x dependence of the data, we find agreement with a quark-parton picture, namely the cross sections have a power-law behavior in 1−x independent of pbeam and pt.
An experiment using the Fermilab Single Arm Spectrometer (SAS) facility and an associated nonmagnetic vertex detector studied the reactions a+p→c+X, where a and c were π±, K±, p, or p¯. Extensive measurements were made at 100 and 175 GeV/c beam momenta with the outgoing hadrons detected in the SAS covering a kinematic range 0.12<x<1.0 and pT<1.25 GeV/c. Additional data covering a more restricted range in x were also gathered at 70 GeV/c incident momentum. In this high-statistics experiment, the identification of both the incoming and outgoing charged hadrons were made with a total of eight Čerenkov counters. New and extensive single-particle inclusive data for charged-particle production in low-pT hadronic fragmentation are presented. The average associated charged-particle multiplicity and pseudorapidity distributions are also given.
Results of high-transverse-momentum charged-hadron production in 400-GeV/c proton-proton and proton-deuteron collisions and 800-GeV/c proton-proton collisions are presented. The transverse-momentum range of the data is from 5.2 to 9.0 GeV/c for the 400-GeV/c collisions and from 3.6 to 11.0 GeV/c for the 800-GeV/c collisions; the data are centered around 90° in the proton-nucleon center-of-momentum system. Single-pion invariant cross sections and particle ratios were measured at both energies. The results are compared to previous experiments and the Lund model.
Full angular distributions of the polarization parameter in elastic K+p scattering at 1.37, 1.45, 1.60, 1.71, 1.80, 1.89, 2.11, and 2.31 GeV/c are presented. These data were obtained in an experiment at the Zero Gradient Synchrotron using a polarized proton target with arrays of scintillation and Čerenkov counters to detect the scattered particles.
We report results from a study of Λ0 polarization in the exclusive reaction pp→pf(Λ0K+) at 800−GeV/c. We observe a dependence of the polarization on the Λ0K+ invariant mass with large (+71%) positive polarization at small mass (1.63−GeV/c2) and large (−43%) negative polarization at large mass (2.75−GeV/c2). This observation confirms the result of the CERN ISR R608 experiment and extends the range over which the effect is observed. The strong dependence of the polarization on the Λ0K+ invariant mass suggests that the origin of the polarization is closely related to the production dynamics of the diffractively produced Λ0K+ system.
We report the first observation of diffractively produced open charm in 800−GeV/c pp collisions of the type pp→pD*X. We measure cross sections of σdiff(D*+)=(0.185±0.044±0.054)μb and σdiff(D*−)=(0.174±0.034±0.029)μb. Our measurements are based on 4.3×109 events recorded by FNAL E690 in the fixed-target run of 1991. We compare our results with previous fixed-target charm experiments.
We report a measurement of the energy-dependent total charged-current cross section $\sigma\left(E_\nu\right)$ for inclusive muon neutrinos scattering on argon, as well as measurements of flux-averaged differential cross sections as a function of muon energy and hadronic energy transfer ($\nu$). Data corresponding to 5.3$\times$10$^{19}$ protons on target of exposure were collected using the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber located in the Fermilab Booster Neutrino Beam with a mean neutrino energy of approximately 0.8~GeV. The mapping between the true neutrino energy $E_\nu$ and reconstructed neutrino energy $E^{rec}_\nu$ and between the energy transfer $\nu$ and reconstructed hadronic energy $E^{rec}_{had}$ are validated by comparing the data and Monte Carlo (MC) predictions. In particular, the modeling of the missing hadronic energy and its associated uncertainties are verified by a new method that compares the $E^{rec}_{had}$ distributions between data and an MC prediction after constraining the reconstructed muon kinematic distributions, energy and polar angle, to those of data. The success of this validation gives confidence that the missing energy in the MicroBooNE detector is well-modeled and underpins first-time measurements of both the total cross section $\sigma\left(E_\nu\right)$ and the differential cross section $d\sigma/d\nu$ on argon.
We present a measurement of the $\nu_e$-interaction rate in the MicroBooNE detector that addresses the observed MiniBooNE anomalous low-energy excess (LEE). The approach taken isolates neutrino interactions consistent with the kinematics of charged-current quasi-elastic (CCQE) events. The topology of such signal events has a final state with 1 electron, 1 proton, and 0 mesons ($1e1p$). Multiple novel techniques are employed to identify a $1e1p$ final state, including particle identification that use two methods of deep-learning-based image identification, and event isolation using a boosted decision-tree ensemble trained to recognize two-body scattering kinematics. This analysis selects 25 $\nu_e$-candidate events in the reconstructed neutrino energy range of 200--1200 MeV, while $29.0 \pm 1.9_\text{(sys)} \pm 5.4_\text{(stat)}$ are predicted when using $\nu_\mu$ CCQE interactions as a constraint. We use a simplified model to translate the MiniBooNE LEE observation into a prediction for a $\nu_e$ signal in MicroBooNE. A $\Delta \chi^2$ test statistic, based on the combined Neyman--Pearson $\chi^2$ formalism, is used to define frequentist confidence intervals for the LEE signal strength. Using this technique, in the case of no LEE signal, we expect this analysis to exclude a normalization factor of 0.75 (0.98) times the median MiniBooNE LEE signal strength at 90% ($2\sigma$) confidence level, while the MicroBooNE data yield an exclusion of 0.25 (0.38) times the median MiniBooNE LEE signal strength at 90% ($2\sigma$) confidence
We report a search for an anomalous excess of inclusive charged-current (CC) $\nu_e$ interactions using the Wire-Cell event reconstruction package in the MicroBooNE experiment, which is motivated by the previous observation of a low-energy excess (LEE) of electromagnetic events from the MiniBooNE experiment. With a single liquid argon time projection chamber detector, the measurements of $\nu_{\mu}$ CC interactions as well as $\pi^0$ interactions are used to constrain signal and background predictions of $\nu_e$ CC interactions. A data set collected from February 2016 to July 2018 corresponding to an exposure of 6.369 $\times$ 10$^{20}$ protons on target from the Booster Neutrino Beam at FNAL is analyzed. With $x$ representing an overall normalization factor and referred to as the LEE strength parameter, we select 56 fully contained $\nu_e$ CC candidates while expecting 69.6 $\pm$ 8.0 (stat.) $\pm$ 5.0 (sys.) and 103.8 $\pm$ 9.0 (stat.) $\pm$ 7.4 (sys.) candidates after constraints for the absence (eLEE$_{x=0}$) of the median signal strength derived from the MiniBooNE observation and the presence (eLEE$_{x=1}$) of that signal strength, respectively. Under a nested hypothesis test using both rate and shape information in all available channels, the best-fit $x$ is determined to be 0 (eLEE$_{x=0}$) with a 95.5% confidence level upper limit of $x$ at 0.502. Under a simple-vs-simple hypotheses test, the eLEE$_{x=1}$ hypothesis is rejected at 3.75$\sigma$, while the eLEE$_{x=0}$ hypothesis is shown to be consistent with the observation at 0.45$\sigma$. In the context of the eLEE model, the estimated 68.3% confidence interval of the $\nu_e$ hypothesis to explain the LEE observed in the MiniBooNE experiment is disfavored at a significance level of more than 2.6$\sigma$ (3.0$\sigma$) considering MiniBooNE's full (statistical) uncertainties.
The forward production of charm states in 350 GeV p-Fe interactions has been studied via the production of prompt single muons with momentum p ≳ 20 GeV/ c . The data indicate equal production of single μ + and μ − events. The observed momentum distributions can be fit with the hypothesis that D mesons are produced with an invariant cross section proportional to (1 − x F ) 5.0±0.8 exp[−(2 ± 0.3) P t ] and do not favor a large diffractive cross section predicted by intrinsic charm models. Extrapolation of the distributions to x F = 0 yields a total D D production cross section of 22.6 ± 2.1(±3.6)ωb/nucleon on the assumption of a linear A dependence and 8% average semileptonic branching ratio of charm states.
The polarization of 103 211 Ω− hyperons produced in 800 GeV proton-beryllium inclusive reactions has been measured. Between 0.3<xF<0.7 and 0.5<pt<1.3 GeV/c, the Ω− polarization is found to be consistent with zero, with a mean value of -0.01±0.01 at 〈xF〉=0.5 and 〈pt〉=0.95 GeV/c. This behavior is similar to that of Λ¯0, which also does not have any quarks in common with the incident proton, but is different from Ξ¯+, which is significantly polarized in the same kinematic region.
A sample of 24 700 Ω− hyperons was produced by a prolarized neutral beam in a spin-transfer reaction. The Ω− polarizations are found to be -0.054±0.019 and -0.149±0.055 at mean Ω− momenta of 322 and 398 GeV/c, respectively. The directions of these polarizations give an Ω− magnetic moment of -(1.94±0.17±0.14)μN
We report measurements of the ratios K+π+, pπ+, K−π−, p¯π−, π−π+, K−K+, and p¯p for hadrons with 0.19<xt<0.62 produced in p−Be and p−W collisions at s=38.8 GeV. The K+π+ ratio at high xt gives the fragmentation-function ratio DuK+Duπ+ at high z. The high-xt K−π− ratio gives an upper limit for DdK−Ddπ− at high z. The pt dependence of pπ+ suggests that scattered constituent diquarks are the primary source of protons with pt<6 GeV/c. We also present species correlations in high-mass h+h− pairs. Strong K+K− and pp¯ correlations were observed.
Measurements of correlations of nearly back-to-back hadrons produced at a large transverse momentum in s=38.8 GeV proton-proton collisions are presented and compared to previous results with a beryllium target. The correlations of identified unlike-sign hadron pairs in ratio to the correlation for all unlike-sign pairs are compared with predictions of the Lund model. These predictions differ from the data.
We derive cross-sections for the inclusive productiion in p̄p interactions at 100 GeV /c of π 0 , K S 0 and Λ 0 Λ 0 of 91.5±5.7 mb, 5.2±0.4 mb and 4.8±0.4 mb respectively, which are all higher than pp cross-sections at energy. We find indications that these differences can be attributed to “annihilation” processes.
Results are presented on the topological cross sections obtained for antiproton-proton interactions from an exposure of the Fermilab 30-inch bubble chamber to a 100 GeV/ c negative beam enriched in p 's. The p p inelastic cross section is found to be σ inel = 34.6 ± 0.4 mb, and the average inelastic charged particle multiplicity to be 〈 n 〉 = 6.74 ± 0.05.
The charge ratio, $R_\mu = N_{\mu^+}/N_{\mu^-}$, for cosmogenic multiple-muon events observed at an under- ground depth of 2070 mwe has been measured using the magnetized MINOS Far Detector. The multiple-muon events, recorded nearly continuously from August 2003 until April 2012, comprise two independent data sets imaged with opposite magnetic field polarities, the comparison of which allows the systematic uncertainties of the measurement to be minimized. The multiple-muon charge ratio is determined to be $R_\mu = 1.104 \pm 0.006 {\rm \,(stat.)} ^{+0.009}_{-0.010} {\rm \,(syst.)} $. This measurement complements previous determinations of single-muon and multiple-muon charge ratios at underground sites and serves to constrain models of cosmic ray interactions at TeV energies.
We report on a study of W+ photon production in approximately 20 pb−1 of p−p¯ collisions at s=1.8 TeV recorded with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. Our results are in good agreement with standard model expectations and are used to obtain limits on anomalous CP-conserving WWγ couplings of −2.3<Δκ<2.2 for λ=0 and −0.7<λ<0.7 for Δκ=0 at 95% C.L. We obtain the same limits for CP-violating couplings. These results provide limits on the higher-order electromagnetic moments of the W boson of 0.8<gW<3.1 for qWe=1 and −0.6<qWe<2.7 for gW=2 at 95% C.L.
The W+jet angular distribution is measured using W→eν events recorded with the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) during the 1988-89 and 1992-93 Tevatron runs. The data agree well with both a leading order and a next-to-leading order theoretical prediction. The shape of the angular distribution is similar to that observed in photon + jet data and significantly different from that observed in dijet data.
A prompt photon cross section measurement from the Collider Detector at Fermilab experiment is presented. Detector and trigger upgrades, as well as 6 times the integrated luminosity compared with our previous publication, have contributed to a much more precise measurement and extended PT range. As before, QCD calculations agree qualitatively with the measured cross section, but the data has a steeper slope than the calculations.
The charge asymmetry has been measured using $19,039W$ decays recorded by the CDF detector during the 1992-93 run of the Tevatron Collider. The asymmetry is sensitive to the ratio of $d$ and $u$ quark distributions to $x<0.01$ at $Q~2 \approx M_W~2$, where nonperturbative effects are minimal. It is found that of the two current sets of parton distributions, those of Martin, Roberts and Stirling (MRS) are favored over the sets most recently produced by the CTEQ collaboration. The $W$ asymmetry data provide a stronger constraints on $d/u$ ratio than the recent measurements of $F_2~{\mu n}/F_2~{\mu p}$ which are limited by uncertainties originating from deutron corrections.
We present the results of a search in p¯p collisions at s=1.8 TeV for the top quark decaying to a charged Higgs boson (H±). We search for dilepton final states from the decay chain tt¯→HH (or HW, or WW) + bb¯→ll+X. In a sample of 19.3 pb−1 collected during 1992-93 with the Collider Detector at Fermilab, we observe 2 events with a background estimation of 3.0 ± 1.0 events. Limits at 95% C.L. in the (Mtop,MH±) plane are presented. For the case Mtop<MW+Mb, we exclude at 95% C.L. the entire (Mtop,MH±) plane for the branching ratio B(H→τν) larger than 75%. We also interpret the results in terms of the parameter tan β of two-Higgs-doublet models.
We present the first measurement of associated direct photon + muon production in hadronic collisions, from a sample of 1.8 TeV $p \bar p$ collisions recorded with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. Quantum chromodynamics (QCD) predicts that these events are primarily from the Compton scattering process $cg \to c\gamma$, with the final state charm quark producing a muon. Hence this measurement is sensitive to the charm quark content of the proton. The measured cross section of $29\pm 9 pb^{-1}$ is compared to a leading-order QCD parton shower model as well as a next-to-leading-order QCD calculation.
This paper presents the first direct measurement of the $B$ meson differential cross section, $d\sigma/dp_T$, in $p\overline{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.8$ TeV using a sample of $19.3 \pm 0.7$ pb$~{-1}$ accumulated by the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). The cross section is measured in the central rapidity region $|y| < 1$ for $p_T(B) > 6.0$ GeV/$c$ by fully reconstructing the $B$ meson decays $B~{+}\rightarrow J/\psi K~{+}$ and $B~{0}\rightarrow J/\psi K~{*0}(892)$, where $J/\psi \rightarrow \mu~+\mu~-$ and $K~{*0} \rightarrow K~+ \pi~-$. A comparison is made to the theoretical QCD prediction calculated at next-to-leading order.
We report on measurements of the ϒ(1S), ϒ(2S), and ϒ(3S) differential, (d2σdPtdy)y=0, and integrated cross sections in pp¯ collisions at s=1.8 TeV using a sample of 16.6 ± 0.6 pb−1 collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. The three resonances were reconstructed through the decay ϒ→μ+μ−. Comparison is made to a leading order QCD prediction.
We present a measurement of $\sigma \cdot B(W \rightarrow e \nu)$ and $\sigma \cdot B(Z~0 \rightarrow e~+e~-)$ in proton - antiproton collisions at $\sqrt{s} =1.8$ TeV using a significantly improved understanding of the integrated luminosity. The data represent an integrated luminosity of 19.7 pb$~{-1}$ from the 1992-1993 run with the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). We find $\sigma \cdot B(W \rightarrow e \nu) = 2.49 \pm 0.12$nb and $\sigma \cdot B(Z~0 \rightarrow e~+e~-) = 0.231 \pm 0.012$nb.
We present the first measurement of the jet pseudorapidity distribution in direct photon events from a sample of pp¯ collisions at s=1.8TeV, recorded with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. Quantum chromodynamics (QCD) predicts that these events are primarily from hard quark-gluon Compton scattering, qg→qγ, with the final state quark producing the jet of hadrons. The jet pseudorapidity distribution in this model is sensitive to parton momentum fractions between 0.015 and 0.15. We find that the shape of the measured pseudorapidity distribution agrees well with next-to-leading order QCD calculations.
We have used 19 pb**-1 of data collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab to search for new particles decaying to dijets. We exclude at 95% confidence level models containing the following new particles: axigluons with mass between 200 and 870 GeV, excited quarks with mass between 80 and 570 GeV, and color octet technirhos with mass between 320 and 480 GeV.
The properties of two-, three-, four-, five-, and six-jet events with multijet masses >600 GeV /c2 are compared with QCD predictions. The shapes of the multijet-mass and leading-jet-angular distributions are approximately independent of jet multiplicity and are well described by the NJETS matrix element calculation and the HERWIG parton shower Monte Carlo predictions. The observed jet transverse momentum distributions for three- and four-jet events discriminate between the matrix element and parton shower predictions, the data favoring the matrix element calculation.
