Combination of inclusive top-quark pair production cross-section measurements using ATLAS and CMS data at $\sqrt{s}= 7$ and 8 TeV

JHEP 07 (2023) 213, 2023.
Inspire Record 2088291 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.110250

A combination of measurements of the inclusive top-quark pair production cross-section performed by ATLAS and CMS in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV at the LHC is presented. The cross-sections are obtained using top-quark pair decays with an opposite-charge electron-muon pair in the final state and with data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 5 fb$^{-1}$ at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV and about 20 fb$^{-1}$ at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV for each experiment. The combined cross-sections are determined to be $178.5 \pm 4.7$ pb at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV and $243.3^{+6.0}_{-5.9}$ pb at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV with a correlation of 0.41, using a reference top-quark mass value of 172.5 GeV. The ratio of the combined cross-sections is determined to be $R_{8/7}= 1.363\pm 0.032$. The combined measured cross-sections and their ratio agree well with theory calculations using several parton distribution function (PDF) sets. The values of the top-quark pole mass (with the strong coupling fixed at 0.118) and the strong coupling (with the top-quark pole mass fixed at 172.5 GeV) are extracted from the combined results by fitting a next-to-next-to-leading-order plus next-to-next-to-leading-log QCD prediction to the measurements. Using a version of the NNPDF3.1 PDF set containing no top-quark measurements, the results obtained are $m_t^\text{pole} = 173.4^{+1.8}_{-2.0}$ GeV and $\alpha_\text{s}(m_Z)= 0.1170^{+ 0.0021}_{-0.0018}$.

Inspire Record 177923 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.20609

A new measurement of the elastic scattering of 250-GeV/c negative pions by electrons provides form-factor results from 0.0368<q2<0.0940 (GeV/c)2. These measurements determine the mean square pion radius to be 〈rπ2〉=0.439±0.030 fm2 or 〈rπ2〉12=0.663±0.023 fm. Comparisons are made with previous elastic-scattering experiments as well as with results obtained from electroproduction experiments, e+e− annihilation experiments, and phenomenological analyses.

The polarization and Q2 dependence of muoproduced ψ→μ+μ− have been analyzed in a magnetized-steel calorimeter at Fermilab. The reaction γVN→ψN is found to be helicity conserving. Even after allowance for possible Q2 dependence of the decay angular distribution, the ψ muoproduction cross section falls more steeply in Q2 than predicted by ψ dominance.

The MiniBooNE Collaboration reports first results of a search for $\nu_e$ appearance in a $\nu_\mu$ beam. With two largely independent analyses, we observe no significant excess of events above background for reconstructed neutrino energies above 475 MeV. The data are consistent with no oscillations within a two neutrino appearance-only oscillation model.

Proton - Deuteron Elastic Scattering at Small Momentum Transfer from 50-GeV/c to 400-GeV/c

Proton-deuteron elastic scattering has been measured in the four-momentum transfer squared region 0.013<|t|<0.14 (GeV/c)2 and for incident proton beam momenta from 50 to 400 GeV/c. The data can be fitted with the Bethe interference formula. We observe shrinkage of the diffraction cone with increasing energy equal to (0.94±0.04)ln(s1 GeV2) (GeV/c)−2. This shrinkage is greater than that observed in pp elastic scattering. The ratio of the elastic to the total cross section is approximately 0.1 and independent of energy above ∼ 150 GeV. In order to extract information on pn scattering we fit our data using the Glauber approach and a form factor which is the sum of exponentials. The values we obtain for the slope parameter in pn scattering are sensitive to the details of the inelastic double-scattering term.

The fermilab high-energy photoproduction experiment E687 provides a sample of approximately 90 events of the decay mode D + s → φμ + ν . The ratios of the form factors governing the decay are measured to be R v =1.8±0.9±0.2 and R 2 = 1.1±0.8±0.1, implying a polarization of Г 1 /Г t = 1.0±0.5±0.1 for the electron decay, consistent with our measurement of the form factor for the decay D + → K ∗0 μ + ν .
