Measurement of the Production Cross Section for Pairs of Isolated Photons in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV

The integrated and differential cross sections for the production of pairs of isolated photons is measured in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC. A data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36 inverse picobarns is analysed. A next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculation is compared to the measurements. A discrepancy is observed for regions of the phase space where the two photons have an azimuthal angle difference, $\Delta(\phi)$, less than approximately 2.8.

A measurement of the inclusive cross section for the process pp to b b-bar X to muon muon X' at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV is presented, based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 27.9 inverse picobarns collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. By selecting pairs of muons each with pseudorapidity abs(eta)<2.1, the value of the cross section for pp to b b-bar X to muon muon X' is found to be 26.4 +/- 0.1 (stat.) +/- 2.4 (syst.) +/- 1.1 (lumi.) nb is obtained for muons with transverse momentum greater than 4 GeV, and 5.12 +/- 0.03 (stat.) +/- 0.48 (syst.) +/- 0.20 (lumi.) nb for transverse momenta greater than 6 GeV. These results are compared to QCD predictions at leading and next-to-leading orders.

A measurement of the differential cross section for the inclusive production of isolated prompt photons in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV is presented. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 36 inverse picobarns recorded by the CMS detector at the LHC. The measurement covers the pseudorapidity range |eta|<2.5 and the transverse energy range 25 < ET < 400 GeV, corresponding to the kinematic region 0.007 < xT < 0.114. Photon candidates are identified with two complementary methods, one based on photon conversions in the silicon tracker and the other on isolated energy deposits in the electromagnetic calorimeter. The measured cross section is presented as a function of ET in four pseudorapidity regions. The next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculations are consistent with the measured cross section.

A measurement of the J/psi and psi(2S) production cross sections in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV with the CMS experiment at the LHC is presented. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 37 inverse picobarns. Using a fit to the invariant mass and decay length distributions, production cross sections have been measured separately for prompt and non-prompt charmonium states, as a function of the meson transverse momentum in several rapidity ranges. In addition, cross sections restricted to the acceptance of the CMS detector are given, which are not affected by the polarization of the charmonium states. The ratio of the differential production cross sections of the two states, where systematic uncertainties largely cancel, is also determined. The branching fraction of the inclusive B to psi(2S) X decay is extracted from the ratio of the non-prompt cross sections to be: BR(B to psi(2S) X) = (3.08 +/- 0.12(stat.+syst.) +/- 0.13(theor.) +/- 0.42(BR[PDG])) 10^-3

The ratio of the production cross sections times branching fractions $ \left(\sigma \left({\mathrm{B}}_{\mathrm{c}}^{\pm}\right)\mathrm{\mathcal{B}}\left({\mathrm{B}}_{\mathrm{c}}^{\pm}\to \mathrm{J}/\psi {\pi}^{\pm}\right)\right)/\left(\sigma \left({\mathrm{B}}^{\pm}\right)\mathrm{\mathcal{B}}\left({\mathrm{B}}^{\pm}\to \mathrm{J}/\psi {K}^{\pm}\right)\right) $ is studied in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC. The kinematic region investigated requires B$_{c}^{±}$ and B$^{±}$ mesons with transverse momentum p$_{T}$ > 15 GeV and rapidity |y| < 1.6. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 5.1 fb$^{−1}$. The ratio is determined to be $ \left[0.48\pm 0.05\left(\mathrm{stat}\right)\pm 0.03\left(\mathrm{syst}\right)\pm 0.05\ \left({\tau}_{{\mathrm{B}}_{\mathrm{c}}}\right)\right]\% $ . The B$_{c}^{±}$  → J/ψπ$^{±}$ π$^{±}$ π$^{∓}$ decay is also observed in the same data sample. Using a model-independent method developed to measure the efficiency given the presence of resonant behaviour in the three-pion system, the ratio of the branching fractions $ \mathrm{\mathcal{B}}\left({\mathrm{B}}_{\mathrm{c}}^{\pm}\to \mathrm{J}/\psi {\pi}^{\pm }{\pi}^{\pm }{\pi}^{\mp}\right)/\mathrm{\mathcal{B}}\left({\mathrm{B}}_{\mathrm{c}}^{\pm}\to \mathrm{J}/\psi {\pi}^{\pm}\right) $ is measured to be $ 2.55\pm 0.80\left(\mathrm{stat}\right)\pm 0.33{\left(\mathrm{syst}\right)}_{-0.01}^{+0.04}\left({\tau}_{B_c}\right) $ , consistent with the previous LHCb result.

Isolated photon production is measured in proton-proton and lead-lead collisions at nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energies of 2.76 TeV in the pseudorapidity range |eta|<1.44 and transverse energies ET between 20 and 80 GeV with the CMS detector at the LHC. The measured ET spectra are found to be in good agreement with next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD predictions. The ratio of PbPb to pp isolated photon ET-differential yields, scaled by the number of incoherent nucleon-nucleon collisions, is consistent with unity for all PbPb reaction centralities.

The transverse momentum spectra of charged particles have been measured in pp and PbPb collisions at sqrt(sNN) = 2.76 TeV by the CMS experiment at the LHC. In the transverse momentum range pt = 5-10 GeV/c, the charged particle yield in the most central PbPb collisions is suppressed by up to a factor of 5 compared to the pp yield scaled by the number of incoherent nucleon-nucleon collisions. At higher pt, this suppression is significantly reduced, approaching roughly a factor of 2 for particles with pt in the range pt=40-100 GeV/c.

A search is presented for standard model (SM) production of four top quarks $ \left(t\overline{t}t\overline{t}\right) $ in pp collisions in the lepton + jets channel. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 19.6 fb$^{−1}$ recorded at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. The expected cross section for SM $ t\overline{t}t\overline{t} $ production is $ {\sigma}_{t\overline{t}t\overline{t}}^{\mathrm{SM}}\approx 1\,\mathrm{f}\mathrm{b} $ . A combination of kinematic reconstruction and multivariate techniques is used to distinguish between the small signal and large background. The data are consistent with expectations of the SM, and an upper limit of 32 fb is set at a 95% confidence level on the cross section for producing four top quarks in the SM, where a limit of 32 ± 17 fb is expected.

Long-range two-particle correlations of strange hadrons with charged particles in pPb and PbPb collisions at LHC energies

Measurements of two-particle angular correlations between an identified strange hadron (K0S or Lambda/anti-Lambda) and a charged particle, emitted in pPb collisions, are presented over a wide range in pseudorapidity and full azimuth. The data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of approximately 35 inverse nanobarns, were collected at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy (sqrt(s[NN])) of 5.02 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC. The results are compared to semi-peripheral PbPb collision data at sqrt(s[NN]) = 2.76 TeV, covering similar charged-particle multiplicities in the events. The observed azimuthal correlations at large relative pseudorapidity are used to extract the second-order (v[2]) and third-order (v[3]) anisotropy harmonics of K0S and Lambda/anti-Lambda particles. These quantities are studied as a function of the charged-particle multiplicity in the event and the transverse momentum of the particles. For high-multiplicity pPb events, a clear particle species dependence of v[2] and v[3] is observed. For pt < 2 GeV, the v[2] and v[3] values of K0S particles are larger than those of Lambda/anti-Lambda particles at the same pt. This splitting effect between two particle species is found to be stronger in pPb than in PbPb collisions in the same multiplicity range. When divided by the number of constituent quarks and compared at the same transverse kinetic energy per quark, both v[2] and v[3] for K0S particles are observed to be consistent with those for Lambda/anti-Lambda particles at the 10% level in pPb collisions. This consistency extends over a wide range of particle transverse kinetic energy and event multiplicities.

<p>A search for new long-lived particles decaying to leptons is presented using proton-proton collisions produced by the LHC at <inline-formula><mml:math display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:msqrt><mml:mrow><mml:mi>s</mml:mi></mml:mrow></mml:msqrt><mml:mo>=</mml:mo><mml:mn>8</mml:mn><mml:mtext> </mml:mtext><mml:mtext> </mml:mtext><mml:mi>TeV</mml:mi></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula>. Data used for the analysis were collected by the CMS detector and correspond to an integrated luminosity of <inline-formula><mml:math display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:mn>19.7</mml:mn><mml:mtext> </mml:mtext><mml:mtext> </mml:mtext><mml:mrow><mml:msup><mml:mrow><mml:mi>fb</mml:mi></mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mo>-</mml:mo><mml:mn>1</mml:mn></mml:mrow></mml:msup></mml:mrow></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula>. Events are selected with an electron and muon with opposite charges that both have transverse impact parameter values between 0.02 and 2 cm. The search has been designed to be sensitive to a wide range of models with nonprompt <inline-formula><mml:math display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:mi>e</mml:mi><mml:mtext>-</mml:mtext><mml:mi>μ</mml:mi></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula> final states. Limits are set on the “displaced supersymmetry” model, with pair production of top squarks decaying into an <inline-formula><mml:math display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:mi>e</mml:mi><mml:mtext>-</mml:mtext><mml:mi>μ</mml:mi></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula> final state via <inline-formula><mml:math display="inline"><mml:mi>R</mml:mi></mml:math></inline-formula>-parity-violating interactions. The results are the most restrictive to date on this model, with the most stringent limit being obtained for a top squark lifetime corresponding to <inline-formula><mml:math display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:mi>c</mml:mi><mml:mi>τ</mml:mi><mml:mo>=</mml:mo><mml:mn>2</mml:mn><mml:mtext> </mml:mtext><mml:mtext> </mml:mtext><mml:mi>cm</mml:mi></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula>, excluding masses below 790 GeV at 95% confidence level.</p>

A measurement of the W boson helicity is presented, where the W boson originates from the decay of a top quark produced in pp collisions. The event selection, optimized for reconstructing a single top quark in the final state, requires exactly one isolated lepton (muon or electron) and exactly two jets, one of which is likely to originate from the hadronization of a bottom quark. The analysis is performed using data recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC in 2012. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb$^{−1}$. The measured helicity fractions are F$_{L}$ = 0.298 ± 0.028 (stat) ± 0.032(syst), F$_{0}$ = 0.720 ± 0.039 (stat) ± 0.037(syst), and F$_{R}$ = −0.018 ± 0.019 (stat) ± 0.011(syst). These results are used to set limits on the real part of the tWb anomalous couplings, g$_{L}$ and g$_{R}$.

An inclusive measurement of the Zγ→νν‾γ production cross section in pp collisions at s=8TeV is presented, using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.6 fb −1 collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. This measurement is based on the observation of events with large missing energy and with a single photon with transverse momentum above 145 GeV and absolute pseudorapidity in the range |η|<1.44 . The measured Zγ→νν‾γ production cross section, 52.7±2.1 (stat)±6.4 (syst)±1.4 (lumi) fb , agrees well with the standard model prediction of 50.0−2.2+2.4 fb . A study of the photon transverse momentum spectrum yields the most stringent limits to date on the anomalous ZZγ and Zγγ trilinear gauge boson couplings.

This paper presents a measurement of the inclusive 3-jet production differential cross section at a proton–proton centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5 $\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ collected with the CMS detector. The analysis is based on the three jets with the highest transverse momenta. The cross section is measured as a function of the invariant mass of the three jets in a range of 445–3270 GeV and in two bins of the maximum rapidity of the jets up to a value of 2. A comparison between the measurement and the prediction from perturbative QCD at next-to-leading order is performed. Within uncertainties, data and theory are in agreement. The sensitivity of the observable to the strong coupling constant $\alpha _\mathrm {S}$ is studied. A fit to all data points with 3-jet masses larger than 664 GeV gives a value of the strong coupling constant of $\alpha _S(M_\mathrm{Z}) = 0.1171 \pm 0.0013\,\text {(exp)} \,^{+0.0073-0.0047}\,\text {(theo)} $ .

Measurement of the t-tbar production cross section in the e-mu channel in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 and 8 TeV

The inclusive cross section for top quark pair production is measured in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s}=7 $ and 8 TeV, corresponding to 5.0 and 19.7 fb$^{−1}$, respectively, with the CMS experiment at the LHC. The cross sections are measured in the electron-muon channel using a binned likelihood fit to multi-differential final state distributions related to identified b quark jets and other jets in the event. The measured cross section values are 173.6 ± 2.1(stat)$_{− 4.0}^{+ 4.5}$ (syst) ± 3.8(lumi)pb at $ \sqrt{s}=7 $ TeV, and 244.9 ± 1.4(stat)$_{− 5.5}^{+ 6.3}$ (syst) ± 6.4(lumi)pb at $ \sqrt{s}=8 $ TeV, in good agreement with QCD calculations at next-to-next-to-leading-order accuracy. The ratio of the cross sections measured at 7 and 8 TeV is determined, as well as cross sections in the fiducial regions defined by the acceptance requirements on the two charged leptons in the final state. The cross section results are used to determine the top quark pole mass via the dependence of the theoretically predicted cross section on the mass, giving a best result of 173. 8$_{− 1.8}^{+ 1.7}$ GeV. The data at $ \sqrt{s}=8 $ TeV are also used to set limits, for two neutralino mass values, on the pair production of supersymmetric partners of the top quark with masses close to the top quark mass.

The search is based upon proton-proton collision data samples corresponding to an integrated luminosity of up to 5.1 fb$^{-1}$ at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV and up to 19.7 fb$^{-1}$ at $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV, recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC. Several final states of the $\mathrm{H \to WW}$ and $\mathrm{H \to ZZ}$ decays are analyzed. The combined upper limit at the 95% confidence level on the product of the cross section and branching fraction exclude a Higgs boson with standard model-like couplings and decays in the $m_{\mathrm{H}}$ range from 145 to 1000 GeV. We also interpret the results in the context of an electroweak singlet extension of the standard model.
