A measurement of the underlying activity in scattering processes with transverse momentum scale in the GeV region is performed in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 0.9 TeV, using data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. Charged hadron production is studied with reference to the direction of a leading object, either a charged particle or a set of charged particles forming a jet. Predictions of several QCD-inspired models as implemented in PYTHIA are compared, after full detector simulation, to the data. The models generally predict too little production of charged hadrons with pseudorapidity eta < 2, p_T > 0.5 GeV/c, and azimuthal direction transverse to that of the leading object.

We present a measurement of the top quark pair production cross section in ppbar collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV using a data sample corresponding to 1.7/fb of integrated luminosity collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We reconstruct ttbar events in the lepton+jets channel. The dominant background is the production of W bosons in association with multiple jets. To suppress this background, we identify electrons from the semileptonic decay of heavy-flavor jets. We measure a production cross section of 7.8 +/- 2.4 (stat) +/- 1.6 (syst) +/- 0.5 (lumi) pb. This is the first measurement of the top pair production cross section with soft electron tags in Run II of the Tevatron.

The production of J/psi mesons is studied in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV with the CMS experiment at the LHC. The measurement is based on a dimuon sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 314 inverse nanobarns. The J/psi differential cross section is determined, as a function of the J/psi transverse momentum, in three rapidity ranges. A fit to the decay length distribution is used to separate the prompt from the non-prompt (b hadron to J/psi) component. Integrated over J/psi transverse momentum from 6.5 to 30 GeV/c and over rapidity in the range |y| < 2.4, the measured cross sections, times the dimuon decay branching fraction, are 70.9 \pm 2.1 (stat.) \pm 3.0 (syst.) \pm 7.8(luminosity) nb for prompt J/psi mesons assuming unpolarized production and 26.0 \pm 1.4 (stat.) \pm 1.6 (syst.) \pm 2.9 (luminosity) nb for J/psi mesons from b-hadron decays.

The Drell-Yan differential cross section is measured in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV, from a data sample collected with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36 inverse picobarns. The cross section measurement, normalized to the measured cross section in the Z region, is reported for both the dimuon and dielectron channels in the dilepton invariant mass range 15-600 GeV. The normalized cross section values are quoted both in the full phase space and within the detector acceptance. The effect of final state radiation is also identified. The results are found to agree with theoretical predictions.

The measurement uses a CDF Run II data sample corresponding to $2 \mathrm{fb^{-1}}$ of integrated luminosity. Based on 248 candidate events with three or more jets and an expected background of $79.5\pm5.3$ events, we measure a production cross section of $9.1\pm 1.6 \mathrm{pb}$.

This article reports a measurement of the production cross section of prompt isolated photon pairs in proton-antiproton collisions at \sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV using the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 5.36/fb. The cross section is presented as a function of kinematic variables sensitive to the reaction mechanisms. The results are compared with three perturbative QCD calculations: (1) a leading order parton shower Monte Carlo, (2) a fixed next-to-leading order calculation and (3) a next-to-leading order/next-to-next-to-leading-log resummed calculation. The comparisons show that, within their known limitations, all calculations predict the main features of the data, but no calculation adequately describes all aspects of the data.

This letter reports a measurement of the cross section of prompt isolated photon pair production in p\bar p collisions at a total energy \sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV using data of 5.36/fb integrated luminosity collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. The measured cross section, differential in basic kinematic variables, is compared with three perturbative QCD predictions, a Leading Order (LO) parton shower calculation and two Next-to-Leading Order (NLO) calculations. The NLO calculations reproduce most aspects of the data. By including photon radiation from quarks before and after hard scattering, the parton shower prediction becomes competitive with the NLO predictions.

The nuclear modification factor ${R_{\mathrm{AA}}} $ and the azimuthal anisotropy coefficient ${v_{2}} $ of prompt and nonprompt (i.e. those from decays of b hadrons) $\mathrm{J}/\psi$ mesons, measured from PbPb and pp collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} = $ 2.76 TeV at the LHC, are reported. The results are presented in several event centrality intervals and several kinematic regions, for transverse momenta $p_{\mathrm{T}} > $ 6.5 GeV/$c$ and rapidity $| {y} | < $ 2.4, extending down to $p_{\mathrm{T}}= $ 3 GeV/$c$ in the 1.6 $ < |{y}| < $ 2.4 range. The ${v_{2}} $ of prompt $\mathrm{J}/\psi$ is found to be nonzero and constant over the full kinematic range studied, while the measured ${v_{2}} $ of nonprompt $\mathrm{J}/\psi$ is consistent with zero. The ${R_{\mathrm{AA}}} $of prompt $\mathrm{J}/\psi$ exhibits a suppression that increases with centrality but does not vary as a function of either $y$ or $p_{\mathrm{T}}$ in the fiducial range. The nonprompt $\mathrm{J}/\psi {R_{\mathrm{AA}}} $ shows a suppression which becomes stronger as rapidity or $ p_{\mathrm{T}}$ increase. The ${v_{2}} $ and nuclear suppression of open and hidden charm, and of open charm and beauty, are compared.

This paper reports the measurement of J/psi meson production in proton-proton (pp) and proton-lead (pPb) collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of 5.02 TeV by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The data samples used in the analysis correspond to integrated luminosities of 28 inverse picobarns and 35 inverse nanobarns for pp and pPb collisions, respectively. Prompt and nonprompt J/psi mesons, the latter issuing from the decay of B mesons, are measured in their dimuon decay channels. Differential cross sections are measured in the transverse momentum range of 2<pt<30 GeV/c, and center-of-mass rapidity ranges of abs(y[CM])<2.4 (pp) and -2.87<y[CM]<1.93 (pPb). The nuclear modification factor, R[pPb], is measured as functions of pt and y[CM]. Small modifications of the J/psi cross sections are observed in pPb relative to pp collisions. The ratio of J/psi production cross sections in p-going and Pb-going directions, R[FB], studied as functions of pt and y[CM], shows a significant decrease for increasing transverse energy deposited at large pseudorapidities. These results, which cover a wide kinematic range, provide new insight on the role of cold nuclear matter effects on prompt and nonprompt J/psi production.

A search for top squark pair production in pp collisions at $ \sqrt{s}=13 $ TeV is performed using events with a single isolated electron or muon, jets, and a large transverse momentum imbalance. The results are based on data collected in 2016 with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{−1}$. No significant excess of events is observed above the expectation from standard model processes. Exclusion limits are set in the context of supersymmetric models of pair production of top squarks that decay either to a top quark and a neutralino or to a bottom quark and a chargino. Depending on the details of the model, we exclude top squarks with masses as high as 1120 GeV. Detailed information is also provided to facilitate theoretical interpretations in other scenarios of physics beyond the standard model.

Measurements are presented of Wγγ and Zγγ production in proton-proton collisions. Fiducial cross sections are reported based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.4 fb$^{−1}$ collected with the CMS detector at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. Signal is identified through the W → ℓν and Z → ℓℓ decay modes, where ℓ is a muon or an electron. The production of Wγγ and Zγγ, measured with significances of 2.6 and 5.9 standard deviations, respectively, is consistent with standard model predictions. In addition, limits on anomalous quartic gauge couplings in Wγγ production are determined in the context of a dimension-8 effective field theory.

Inspire Record 1599548 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.77605

The differential production cross sections of B+/- mesons are measured via the exclusive decay channels B+/- to J/psi K+/- to mu+ mu - K+/- as a function of transverse momentum in pp and PbPb collisions at a center-of-mass energy sqrt(s[NN])=5.02 TeV per nucleon pair with the CMS detector at the LHC. The pp (PbPb) dataset used for this analysis corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 28.0 inverse picobarns (351 inverse microbarns). The measurement is performed in the B+/- meson transverse momentum range of 7 to 50 GeV, in the rapidity interval abs(y)<2.4. In this kinematic range, a strong suppression of the production cross section by about a factor of two is observed in the PbPb system in comparison to the expectation from pp reference data. These results are compared to theoretical calculations incorporating beauty quark diffusion and energy loss in a quark-gluon plasma.

A search for new phenomena is performed in final states containing one or more jets and an imbalance in transverse momentum in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 $\,\text {TeV}$ . The analysed data sample, recorded with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC, corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.3 $\,\text {fb}^{-1}$ . Several kinematic variables are employed to suppress the dominant background, multijet production, as well as to discriminate between other standard model and new physics processes. The search provides sensitivity to a broad range of new-physics models that yield a stable weakly interacting massive particle. The number of observed candidate events is found to agree with the expected contributions from standard model processes, and the result is interpreted in the mass parameter space of fourteen simplified supersymmetric models that assume the pair production of gluinos or squarks and a range of decay modes. For models that assume gluino pair production, masses up to 1575 and 975 $\,\text {GeV}$ are excluded for gluinos and neutralinos, respectively. For models involving the pair production of top squarks and compressed mass spectra, top squark masses up to 400 $\,\text {GeV}$ are excluded.

The pseudorapidity distributions of charged hadrons in proton-lead collisions at nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s_{_\mathrm{NN}}} =$ 5.02 and 8.16 TeV are presented. The measurements are based on data samples collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The number of primary charged hadrons produced in non-single-diffractive proton-lead collisions is determined in the pseudorapidity range $|\eta_\mathrm{lab}| <$ 2.4. The charged-hadron multiplicity distributions are compared to the predictions from theoretical calculations and Monte Carlo event generators. In the center-of-mass pseudorapidity range $|\eta_\mathrm{cm}| < 0.5$, the average charged-hadron multiplicity densities $<\mathrm{d}N_{\mathrm{ch}}/\mathrm{d}\eta_{\mathrm{cm}}>$$\vert_{|\eta_{\mathrm{cm}}| < 0.5}$ are 17.31$\pm $0.01 (stat) $\pm$ 0.59 (syst) and 20.10$\pm$0.01 (stat)$\pm$0.85 (syst) at $\sqrt{s_{_\mathrm{NN}}} =$ 5.02 and 8.16 TeV, respectively. The particle densities per participant nucleon are compared to similar measurements in proton-proton, proton-nucleus, and nucleus-nucleus collisions.

Inspire Record 1618346 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.79057

For the first time a principle-component analysis is used to separate out different orthogonal modes of the two-particle correlation matrix from heavy ion collisions. The analysis uses data from sqrt(s[NN]) = 2.76 TeV PbPb and sqrt(s[NN]) = 5.02 TeV pPb collisions collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. Two-particle azimuthal correlations have been extensively used to study hydrodynamic flow in heavy ion collisions. Recently it has been shown that the expected factorization of two-particle results into a product of the constituent single-particle anisotropies is broken. The new information provided by these modes may shed light on the breakdown of flow factorization in heavy ion collisions. The first two modes ("leading" and "subleading") of two-particle correlations are presented for elliptical and triangular anisotropies in PbPb and pPb collisions as a function of pt over a wide range of event activity. The leading mode is found to be essentially equivalent to the anisotropy harmonic previously extracted from two-particle correlation methods. The subleading mode represents a new experimental observable and is shown to account for a large fraction of the factorization breaking recently observed at high transverse momentum. The principle-component analysis technique has also been applied to multiplicity fluctuations. These also show a subleading mode. The connection of these new results to previous studies of factorization is discussed.

Inspire Record 1516191 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.77008

Normalized double-differential cross sections for top quark pair (ttbar) production are measured in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV with the CMS experiment at the LHC. The analyzed data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 inverse femtobarns. The measurement is performed in the dilepton e+/- mu-/+ final state. The ttbar cross section is determined as a function of various pairs of observables characterizing the kinematics of the top quark and ttbar system. The data are compared to calculations using perturbative quantum chromodynamics at next-to-leading and approximate next-to-next-to-leading orders. They are also compared to predictions of Monte Carlo event generators that complement fixed-order computations with parton showers, hadronization, and multiple-parton interactions. Overall agreement is observed with the predictions, which is improved when the latest global sets of proton parton distribution functions are used. The inclusion of the measured ttbar cross sections in a fit of parametrized parton distribution functions is shown to have significant impact on the gluon distribution.

A search for physics beyond the standard model in the final state with two same-flavour leptons (electrons or muons) and two quarks produced in proton–proton collisions at s=13TeV is presented. The data were recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 2.3fb−1 . The observed data are in good agreement with the standard model background prediction. The results of the measurement are interpreted in the framework of a recently proposed model in which a heavy Majorana neutrino, Nℓ , stems from a composite-fermion scenario. Exclusion limits are set for the first time on the mass of the heavy composite Majorana neutrino, mNℓ , and the compositeness scale Λ. For the case mNℓ=Λ , the existence of Ne ( Nμ ) is excluded for masses up to 4.60 (4.70) TeV at 95% confidence level.
