Results are reported based on a study of 3114 π−p events at 205 GeV/c in the National Accelerator Laboratory 30-in. bubble chamber. The measured π−p total and elastic cross sections are 24.0 ± 0.5 and 3.0 ± 0.3 mb, respectively. The elastic differential cross section has a slope of 9.0 ± 0.7 GeV−2 for 0.03≤−t≤0.6 GeV2. The average charged-particle multiplicity for the inelastic events is 8.02 ± 0.12.

We have measured π+p, π−p, and pp elastic scattering at an incident-beam momentum of 200 GeV/c in the region of −t, four-momentum transfer squared, from 0.021 to 0.665 (GeV/c)2. The data allow an investigation of the t dependence of the logarithmic forward slope parameter b≡(ddt)(lndσdt). In addition to standard parametrization, we use functional forms suggested by the additive quark model to fit the measured dσdt distributions. Within the context of this model we estimate the size of the clothed quark in the pion and proton. Limits on the elastic-scattering amplitude derived from unitarity bounds are checked, and no violations are observed.

We present the xF and pT differential cross sections of J/ψ and ψ′, respectively, in the ranges −0.05<xF<0.25 and pT<3.5 GeV/c. The data samples are constituted by about 12 000 J/ψ and 200 ψ′ produced in proton-silicon interactions at 800 GeV/c and decaying into opposite sign muons. The xF and pT distributions are compared with recent results from experiments E789 at the same energy and to leading order QCD predictions using the MRS D0 parametrization for the parton structure function. The measured shapes of the differential cross sections, except for the dσ/dxF at small xF, agree very well with the prediction, even though their value is quite a bit larger than the prediction. We also present the cosθ differential cross section of the J/ψ which indicates unpolarized production in contrast with color octet models predictions.

The cross sections for the hadroproduction of the Chi1 and Chi2 states of charmonium in proton-silicon collisions at sqrt{s}=38.8 GeV have been measured in Fermilab fixed target Experiment 771. The Chi states were observed via their radiative decay to J/psi+gamma, where the photon converted to e+e- in the material of the spectrometer. The measured values for the Chi1 and Chi2 cross sections for x_F>0 are 263+-69(stat)+-32(syst) and 498+-143(stat)+-67(syst) nb per nucleon respectively. The resulting sigma(Chi1}/sigma(Chi2) ratio of 0.53+-0.20(stat)+-0.07(syst), although somewhat larger than most theoretical expectations, can be accomodated by the latest theoretical estimates.

A search has been made for direct photon production in pBe interactions at 200 and 300 GeV/ c over the kinematic region 1.5 < P ⊥ < 4.0 GeV/ c and −0.7 < X F < 0 (90° < θ cms < 160°). An excess of single photons above that which is predicted from the measured π 0 and η 0 production is observed. Theratio of γ / π 0 production is calculated assuming that the excess arises from direct photon production. We find that this ratio averages 0.070 ± 0.025 (including systematic errors) in this region of X F and P ⊥ for our 200 and 300 GeV/ c data. We have used our measured value of the η / π 0 ratio of 0.47 ± 0.10 in the determination of the γ / π 0 ratio. The variation of γ / π 0 with X F , P ⊥ , X R and θ cms presented.

A study of 205-GeV/c π−p interactions has been made with a 48 800-picture exposure in the bare Fermilab 30-inch hydrogen bubble chamber. The average number of charged particles produced per inelastic interaction is 7.99±0.06. The elastic cross section is 3.18±0.13 mb and the total cross section is 24.19±0.44 mb. The inclusive cross sections for neutral-particle production are: σ(γ)=171.3±15.3 mb, σ(KS0)=3.64±0.61 mb (x<0.3), σ(Λ)=1.71±0.34 mb (x<0.3), and σ(Λ¯)=0.59±0.23 mb (x<0.1). The average number of π0's produced per inelastic collision is consistent with a linear rise with the number of charged particles, and about equal to the number of produced π− or π+. The average number of K0's, Λ's, and Λ¯'s is consistent with very little dependence on the number of charged particles. General characteristics of neutral-particle production are presented and compared with other experiments. For each topology the produced neutral energy is ∼13 of the incident energy.

We see no evidence for the anomalous sharp rise in σν¯σν reported by earlier authors. The neutrino cross section rises linearly with energy and with σE about 18% smaller than other measurements below 10 GeV. The average antineutrino slope at 55 GeV is consistent with measurements at low energy; however, a (20 ± 10)% increase is indicated over our energy range.

We present measured hadron energy distributions for the reactions ν(ν¯)+N→ν(ν¯)+hadrons at high energy, as well as for the similar charged-current interactions. Insofar as possible, the determination of these distributions avoids any a priori assumptions about either the neutral-current or the charged-current interactions. We further analyze the neutral-current distributions within the framework of specific models, particularly the scaling model, to obtain a positive-helicity component P=0.36±0.10, which lies between pure V−A and pure V or A, and a coupling strength of g0=0.31±0.03 relative to the charged-current interaction. These coupling parameters agree well with the predictions of the Weinberg-Salam model with sin2θW=0.33±0.07.

The largest sample ever recorded of $\numub$ charged-current quasi-elastic (CCQE, $\numub + p \to \mup + n$) candidate events is used to produce the minimally model-dependent, flux-integrated double-differential cross section $\frac{d^{2}\sigma}{dT_\mu d\uz}$ for $\numub$ incident on mineral oil. This measurement exploits the unprecedented statistics of the MiniBooNE anti-neutrino mode sample and provides the most complete information of this process to date. Also given to facilitate historical comparisons are the flux-unfolded total cross section $\sigma(E_\nu)$ and single-differential cross section $\frac{d\sigma}{d\qsq}$ on both mineral oil and on carbon by subtracting the $\numub$ CCQE events on hydrogen. The observed cross section is somewhat higher than the predicted cross section from a model assuming independently-acting nucleons in carbon with canonical form factor values. The shape of the data are also discrepant with this model. These results have implications for intra-nuclear processes and can help constrain signal and background processes for future neutrino oscillation measurements.

An analysis of high-transverse-momentum electrons using data from the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) of p¯p collisions at s=1800 GeV yields values of the production cross section times branching ratio for W and Z0 bosons of σ(p¯p→WX→eνX)=2.19±0.04(stat)±0.21(syst) nb and σ(p¯p→Z0X→e+e−X)=0.209±0.013(stat)±0.017(syst) nb. Proton-deuteron elastic scattering has been measured in the four-momentum transfer squared region 0.013<|t|<0.14 (GeV/c)2 and for incident proton beam momenta from 50 to 400 GeV/c. The data can be fitted with the Bethe interference formula. We observe shrinkage of the diffraction cone with increasing energy equal to (0.94±0.04)ln(s1 GeV2) (GeV/c)−2. This shrinkage is greater than that observed in pp elastic scattering. The ratio of the elastic to the total cross section is approximately 0.1 and independent of energy above ∼ 150 GeV. In order to extract information on pn scattering we fit our data using the Glauber approach and a form factor which is the sum of exponentials. The values we obtain for the slope parameter in pn scattering are sensitive to the details of the inelastic double-scattering term.

Extensive measurements were made at 100 and 175 GeV/c beam momenta with the outgoing hadrons detected in the SAS covering a kinematic range 0.12<x<1.0 and pT<1.25 GeV/c. Additional data covering a more restricted range in x were also gathered at 70 GeV/c incident momentum. In this high-statistics experiment, the identification of both the incoming and outgoing charged hadrons were made with a total of eight Čerenkov counters. New and extensive single-particle inclusive data for charged-particle production in low-pT hadronic fragmentation are presented. Limits at 95% C.L. in the (Mtop,MH±) plane are presented. For the case Mtop<MW+Mb, we exclude at 95% C.L. the entire (Mtop,MH±) plane for the branching ratio B(H→τν) larger than 75%. We also interpret the results in terms of the parameter tan β of two-Higgs-doublet models.

Inspire Record 494764 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.42121

We present the first measurement of associated direct photon + muon production in hadronic collisions, from a sample of 1.8 TeV $p \bar p$ collisions recorded with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. Quantum chromodynamics (QCD) predicts that these events are primarily from the Compton scattering process $cg \to c\gamma$, with the final state charm quark producing a muon. Hence this measurement is sensitive to the charm quark content of the proton. The measured cross section of $29\pm 9 pb^{-1}$ is compared to a leading-order QCD parton shower model as well as a next-to-leading-order QCD calculation.

This paper presents the first direct measurement of the $B$ meson differential cross section, $d\sigma/dp_T$, in $p\overline{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.8$ TeV using a sample of $19.3 \pm 0.7$ pb$~{-1}$ accumulated by the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). The cross section is measured in the central rapidity region $|y| < 1$ for $p_T(B) > 6.0$ GeV/$c$ by fully reconstructing the $B$ meson decays $B~{+}\rightarrow J/\psi K~{+}$ and $B~{0}\rightarrow J/\psi K~{*0}(892)$, where $J/\psi \rightarrow \mu~+\mu~-$ and $K~{*0} \rightarrow K~+ \pi~-$. A comparison is made to the theoretical QCD prediction calculated at next-to-leading order.

Inspire Record 1124333 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.60522

The transverse momentum cross section of $e^+e^-$ pairs in the $Z$-boson mass region of 66-116 GeV/$c^2$ is precisely measured using Run II data corresponding to 2.1 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. The cross section is compared with quantum chromodynamic calculations. One is a fixed-order perturbative calculation at ${\cal O}(\alpha_s^2)$, and the other combines perturbative predictions at high transverse momentum with the gluon resummation formalism at low transverse momentum. Comparisons of the measurement with calculations show reasonable agreement. The measurement is of sufficient precision to allow refinements in the understanding of the transverse momentum distribution.

In a sample of 670 000 charged-current neutrino events, 101 μ−μ− events have been observed, with 30 GeV<Eν<600 GeV and Pμ>9 GeV/c for both muons. After background subtraction, 18.5±13.9 events remain, yielding a prompt rate of (5.5±4.1)×10−5 per charged-current event. A sample of 124 000 antineutrino events yields 15 μ+μ+ events, giving 6.4±4.2 events after background subtraction and a prompt rate of (1.0±0.7)×10−4 per charged-current event. The numbers and kinematic distributions of these events are consistent with standard model sources.

The fraction, for PTJ/ψ>4.0GeV/c and |ηJ/ψ|<0.6, not including contributions from b flavored hadrons, is 29.7%±1.7%(stat)±5.7%(syst). We have determined the cross sections for J/ψ mesons originating from χc decays and for directly produced J/ψ mesons. We present a study of J/ψ and ψ(2S) production in pp¯ collisions, at s=1.8TeV with the CDF detector at Fermilab. The J/ψ and ψ(2S) mesons are reconstructed using their μ+μ− decay modes. We have measured the inclusive production cross section for both mesons as a function of their transverse momentum in the central region, |η|<0.6. We also measure the fraction of these events originating from b hadrons. We thus extract individual cross sections for J/ψ and ψ(2S) mesons from b-quark decays and prompt production. We find a large excess (approximately a factor of 50) of direct ψ(2S) production compared with predictions from the color singlet model.

The DO collaboration reports on a search for the Standard Model top quark in pbar-p collisions at Sqrt(s)=1.8TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron, with an integrated luminosity of approximately 50pb-1. We have searched for t-tbar production in the dilepton and single-lepton decay channels, with and without tagging of b-quark jets. We observed 17 events with an expected background of 3.8+/-0.6 events. The probability for an upward fluctuation of the background to produce the observed signal is 2.0E-6 (equivalent to 4.6 standard deviations). The kinematic properties of the excess events are consistent with top quark decay. We conclude that we have observed the top quark and measure its mass to be 199~+19_21 (stat.)+/- 22 (syst.)GeV/c**2 and its production cross section to be 6.4 +/- 2.2 pb.

In events with two jets of ET>20GeV, 1.8<|η|<3.5, and η1η2>0, we find that the diffractive to nondiffractive production ratio is RJJ=[0.75±0.05(stat)±0.09(syst)]%. We report the first observation of diffractively produced W bosons. In a sample of W -> e nu events produced in p-barp collisions at sqrt{s}=1.8 TeV, we find an excess of events with a forward rapidity gap, which is attributed to diffraction. The probability that this excess is consistent with non-diffractive production is 1.1 10^{-4} (3.8 sigma). The relatively low fraction of W+Jet events observed within this excess implies that mainly quarks from the pomeron, which mediates diffraction, participate in W production. The diffractive to non-diffractive W production ratio is found to be R_W=(1.15 +/- 0.55)%.

We have measured the differential cross section for small angle p−p scattering from 25 to 200 GeV incident energy and in the momentum transfer range 0.015<|t|<0.080 (GeVc)2. We find that the slope of the forward diffraction peak, b(s), increases with energy and can be fitted by the form b(s)=b0+2α′ lns, where b0=8.3±1.3 and α′=0.28±0.13 (GeVc)−2. Such dependence is compatible with the data existing both at higher and lower energies. We have also obtained the energy dependence of the p−p total cross section in the energy range from 48 to 196 GeV. Within our errors which are ± 1.1 mb the total cross section remains constant.
