Experimental results on the production of dimuons by 800-GeV protons incident on a copper target are presented. The results include measurements of both the continuum of dimuons and the dimuon decays of the three lowest-mass ϒ S states. A description of the apparatus, data acquisition, and analysis techniques is included. A comparison of the results with data taken at lower incident energies indicates a scaling behavior of the continuum dimuon yields.
The properties of events having the topology and kinematic features of double Pomeron exchange are described. The data were taken at the CERN pp¯ collider at s=0.63 TeV in the UA1 detector. A calorimeter trigger was used to isolate events in which a central cluster of particles was separated from forward particles by large rapidity gaps. The invariant mass M of the central cluster (possibly a colliding Pomeron-Pomeron system) covers the range 10-70 GeV/c2. The M dependence of charged particle multiplicity distributions in these double Pomeron events is strikingly different from their s dependence in pp and pp¯ interactions.
A very narrow resonance with a mass of 3.1 GeV/c2 is observed in the reaction n+Be→μ++μ−+X. The total cross section for this process, as well as its P⊥2 and x distribution, are given.
Full angular distributions of the polarization parameter in elastic K+p scattering at 1.37, 1.45, 1.60, 1.71, 1.80, 1.89, 2.11, and 2.31 GeV/c are presented. These data were obtained in an experiment at the Zero Gradient Synchrotron using a polarized proton target with arrays of scintillation and Čerenkov counters to detect the scattered particles.
We have studied the polarization of Ξ− and Ω− hyperons produced by high energy neutral particle beams. An unpolarized neutral beam striking a target at ±1.8 mrad produced 1.4×107Ξ−'s with an average momentum of 395 GeV/c which were unpolarized, within a sensitivity limit of 0.007, and 2.2 × 105 Ω−'s with a polarization of +0.042±0.007 at an average momentum of 374 GeV/c. A polarized neutral beam striking a target at 0.0 mrad produced 7.1×105Ξ−'s which had a polarization of -0.118±0.004 at an average momentum of 393 GeV/c and 1.8 × 104 Ω−'s with a polarization of -0.069±0.023 at an average momentum of 394 GeV/c. The polarized neutral beam measurement is in good agreement with a previous measurement. The unpolarized neutral beam results are not understood in the context of the current models of hyperon polarization.
We have investigated the reactions p p π + π − a ̊ and p p a ̊ p p 2π + 2π − at 100 GeV /c . The p p π + π − final state is dominated by diffractive production of a p π + π − ( or p π + π − ) system which shows a strong tendency to form Δ ++ π − ( or Δ ++ π + ) . The process p p a ̊ Δ ++ Δ ++ is also observed in this reaction, indicating an energy dependence of s −1.5±0.1 . The p p 2π + 2π − channel shows less single diffraction, and has a doubly diffractive component consistent with pomeron factorization. Strong Δ ++ ( Δ ++ ) production is agoain seen, but in contrast to the p p π + π − channel we also observe considerable ϱ 0 production.
We present results from an experiment studying the production of single particles and jets (groups of particles) with high p ⊥ (transverse momentum) in 200 GeV/ c interactions on a beryllium target. We give a detailed discussion of the ambiguities in the jet definition. The jet and single-particle cross sections have a similar shape but the jet cross section is over two orders of magnitude larger. The events show evidence for the coplanar structure suggested by constituent models, and the momentum distributions of charged particles give strong support to a simple quark-quark scattering model.
The results presented in this paper were obtained from a 105 000 frame exposure of the FNAL Hybrid Proportional Wire Chamber-30 inch Bubble Chamber System, in a tagged beam of 147 GeV/ c negative particles. Elastic, total and topological cross sections were obtained for both π − p and K − p interactions. Comparisons with other data, taken with various beam particles over large momentum intervals, show good agreement with KNO scaling, and similarity in the scaling behavior of σ n for the different beam particles.

Fermilab experiment E835 has measured the cross section for the reaction p ̄ p→e + e − at s =11.63, 12.43, 14.40 and 18.22 GeV 2 . From the analysis of the 66 observed events new high-precision measurements of the proton magnetic form factor are obtained.
