Loss of memory of target nucleus deformation axis in heavy ion fusion fission

Fission fragment cross sections and angular anisotropies have been measured to high accuracy following fusion of 16O with the strongly deformed nucleus 182W, at bombarding energies spanning the fusion barrier region. Together with existing evaporation residue data, they show that at all the beam energies, the statistical transition state model adequately describes the fission properties measured. No significant evidence was found for a memory of the different configurations at fusion resulting from the target nucleus deformation, in contrast with previous measurements for deformed actinide nuclei.

We have mesured the polarization of 375-GeV/c Σ+ and Σ¯ − hyperons produced by 800-GeV/c protons incident on a Cu target. We find that the Σ+ polarization rises with increasing pt to a maximum of 16% at pt=1.0 GeV/c and then decreases to 10% at pt=1.8 GeV/c. We compare this Σ+ polarization with data at lower energies. The Σ¯ − polarization has been measured for the first time. It has the same sign as the Σ+ but smaller magnitude in a similar kinematical region.

Measurement of the production cross section of an isolated photon associated with jets in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A measurement of the cross section for the production of an isolated photon in association with jets in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV is presented. Photons are reconstructed in the pseudorapidity range $|\eta^{\gamma}| \lt 1.37$ and with a transverse energy $E_T^\gamma$ > 25 GeV. Jets are reconstructed in the rapidity range $|y^{jet}|$ < 4.4 and with a transverse momentum $p_T^{jet}$ > 20 GeV. The differential cross section $d\sigma/dE_T^\gamma$ is measured, as a function of the photon transverse energy, for three different rapidity ranges of the leading-$p_T$ jet: $|y^{jet}| < 1.2, 1.2 \le |y^{jet}|$ < 2.8 and 2.8 $\le |y^{jet}|$ < 4.4. For each rapidity configuration the same-sign $(\eta^{\gamma}y^{jet}\ge 0)$ and opposite-sign $(\eta^{\gamma}y^{jet}<0)$ cases are studied separately. The results are based on an integrated luminosity of 37 pb$^{-1}$, collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations are found to be in fair agreement with the data, except for $E_T^{\gamma} \lt 45$ GeV, where the theoretical predictions overestimate the measured cross sections.

Search for scalar top quark pair production in natural gauge mediated supersymmetry models with the ATLAS detector in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV

The results of a search for pair production of the lighter scalar partners of top quarks in 2.05 fb-1 of pp collisions at sqrt(s) =7 TeV using the ATLAS experiment at the LHC are reported. Scalar top quarks are searched for in events with two same flavour opposite-sign leptons (electrons or muons) with invariant mass consistent with the Z boson mass, large missing transverse momentum and jets in the final state. At least one of the jets is identified as originating from a b-quark. No excess over Standard Model expectations is found. The results are interpreted in the framework of R-parity conserving, gauge mediated Supersymmetry breaking `natural' scenarios, where the neutralino is the next-to-lightest supersymmetric particle. Scalar top quark masses up to 310 GeV are excluded for the lightest neutralino mass between 115 GeV and 230 GeV at 95% confidence level, reaching an exclusion of the scalar top quark mass of 330 GeV for the lightest neutralino mass of 190 GeV. Scalar top quark masses below 240 GeV are excluded for all values of the lightest neutralino mass above the Z boson mass.

Measurement of the cross section and angular correlations for associated production of a Z boson with b hadrons in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV

A study of proton-proton collisions in which two b hadrons are produced in association with a Z boson is reported. The collisions were recorded at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC, for an integrated luminosity of 5.2 inverse femtobarns. The b hadrons are identified by means of displaced secondary vertices, without the use of reconstructed jets, permitting the study of b-hadron pair production at small angular separation. Differential cross sections are presented as a function of the angular separation of the b hadrons and the Z boson. In addition, inclusive measurements are presented. For both the inclusive and differential studies, different ranges of Z boson momentum are considered, and each measurement is compared to the predictions from different event generators at leading-order and next-to-leading-order accuracy.

Study of ordered hadron chains with the ATLAS detector

The analysis of the momentum difference between charged hadrons in high-energy proton-proton collisions is performed in order to study coherent particle production. The observed correlation pattern agrees with a model of a helical QCD string fragmenting into a chain of ground-state hadrons. A threshold momentum difference in the production of adjacent pairs of charged hadrons is observed, in agreement with model predictions. The presence of low-mass hadron chains also explains the emergence of charge-combination-dependent two-particle correlations commonly attributed to Bose-Einstein interference. The data sample consists of 190 inverse microbarns of minimum bias events collected with proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV in the early low-luminosity data taking with the ATLAS detector at the LHC.

A search for dark-matter particles in events with large missing transverse momentum and a Higgs boson candidate decaying into two photons is reported. The search uses $139$ fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collision data collected at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV with the ATLAS detector at the CERN LHC between 2015 and 2018. No significant excess of events over the Standard Model predictions is observed. The results are interpreted by extracting limits on three simplified models that include either vector or pseudoscalar mediators and predict a final state with a pair of dark-matter candidates and a Higgs boson decaying into two photons.

Nonresonant central exclusive production of charged-hadron pairs in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

The central exclusive production of charged-hadron pairs in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13\TeV is examined, based on data collected in a special high-$\beta^*$ run of the LHC. The nonresonant continuum processes are studied with the invariant mass of the centrally produced two-pion system in the resonance-free region, $m_{\pi^+\pi^-}$$\lt$ 0.7 GeV or $m_{\pi^+\pi^-}$$\gt$ 1.8 GeV. Differential cross sections as functions of the azimuthal angle between the surviving protons, squared exchanged four-momenta, and $m_{\pi^+\pi^-}$ are measured in a wide region of scattered proton transverse momenta, between 0.2 and 0.8 GeV, and for pion rapidities $\lvert y\rvert$$\lt$ 2. A rich structure of interactions related to double-pomeron exchange is observed. A parabolic minimum in the distribution of the two-proton azimuthal angle is observed for the first time. It can be interpreted as an effect of additional pomeron exchanges between the protons from the interference between the bare and the rescattered amplitudes. After model tuning, various physical quantities are determined that are related to the pomeron cross section, proton-pomeron and meson-pomeron form factors, pomeron trajectory and intercept, and coefficients of diffractive eigenstates of the proton.

A search is presented for production of dark matter particles recoiling against a leptonically decaying Z boson in 20.3 fb$^{-1}$ of pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Events with large missing transverse momentum and two oppositely-charged electrons or muons consistent with the decay of a Z boson are analyzed. No excess above the Standard Model prediction is observed. Limits are set on the mass scale of the contact interaction as a function of the dark matter particle mass using an effective field theory description of the interaction of dark matter with quarks or with Z bosons. Limits are also set on the coupling and mediator mass of a model in which the interaction is mediated by a scalar particle.

Search for an invisibly decaying Higgs boson or dark matter candidates produced in association with a $Z$ boson in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for an invisibly decaying Higgs boson or dark matter candidates produced in association with a leptonically decaying $Z$ boson in proton--proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV is presented. This search uses 36.1 fb$^{-1}$ of data collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. No significant deviation from the expectation of the Standard Model backgrounds is observed. Assuming the Standard Model $ZH$ production cross-section, an observed (expected) upper limit of 67% (39%) at the 95% confidence level is set on the branching ratio of invisible decays of the Higgs boson with mass $m_H = $ 125 GeV. The corresponding limits on the production cross-section of the $ZH$ process with the invisible Higgs boson decays are also presented. Furthermore, exclusion limits on the dark matter candidate and mediator masses are reported in the framework of simplified dark matter models.

DM exclusion limit in the two-dimensional phase space of WIMP mass m<sub>&chi;</sub> vs mediator mass m<sub>med</sub> determined using the combined ee+&mu;&mu; channel. Both the observed and expected limits are presented, and the 1&sigma; uncertainty band for the expected limits is also provided. Regions bounded by the limit curves are excluded at the 95% CL. The grey line labelled with "m<sub>med</sub> = 2m<sub>&chi;</sub>'' indicates the kinematic threshold where the mediator can decay on-shell into WIMPs, and the other grey line gives the perturbative limit (arXiv 1603.04156). The relic density line (arXiv 1603.04156) illustrates the combination of m<sub>&chi;</sub> and m<sub>med</sub> that would explain the observed DM relic density.
