The photoproduction yields of π0 mesons from D2, Be, C, Al, Cu, Ag, and Pb targets have been measured at peak bremsstrahlung energies of 4.25, 5.6, 7.8, and 9.6 GeV. The A dependence of π0 photoproduction is found to be almost independent of energy in this range in contrast to vector-meson dominance predictions.
A-EFFECTIVE IS SIG(GAMMA A --> PI0 A)/SIG(GAMMA NUCLEON --> PI0 NUCLEON). IT IS NORMALIZED RELATIVE TO THE VALUE FOR DEUTERIUM WHICH IS CALCULATED WITH GLAUBER CORRECTIONS.
The branching fraction for the decay of the ϒ(1S) into τ paris has been measured to be (3.4±0.4±0.4)%. This result agrees with the previously measured branching ratio of the decay into muon pairs.

We have observed Λc baryons in nonresonant e+e− annihilation at energies around s=10.5 GeV through their decay to Λπ+π+π−. We measure the branching fraction to be (2.8 ± 0.7 ± 1.1)%. The momentum spectrum of the Λc is similar to that of charmed mesons, providing a constraint on models of charmed-quark hadronization.
Data are extrapolated over whole x range using the 'Peterson' formula.
In a sample of B mesons from the decay of the ϒ(4S) produced in e+e− collisions at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, inclusive protons, antiprotons, lambdas, and antilambdas have been observed. Lower limits to the B-to-baryon branching ratios are derived.

Measurements of the cross section for the production of electron pairs with invariant masses between 4 and 8.7 GeV are presented as a function of the centre-of-mass energy ( s = 28 to s = 62 GeV ) of the colliding proton beams. A significant excess of events is observed in the region 8.7 to 10.3 GeV; these are ascribed to the ϒ(9.5 GeV) resonances and estimates of the production cross sections are given.
Axis error includes +- 40/40 contribution (Due to the uncertainty in efficiency).

Data from a study of electron pairs produced in pp collisions (√ s = 5 and 63 GeV) are used to extend measurements of the scaling function down to m /√ s ≈ 0.07 (4.5 < m < 19 GeV). The dilepton continuum can be described by the scaling formula (fx475-1)

We have used the momentum spectrum of leptons produced in semileptonic B-meson decays to set a 90%-confidence-level upper limit on Γ(b→ulν)Γ(b→clν) of 4%. We also measure the semileptonic branching fractions of the B meson to be (12.0±0.7±0.5)% for electrons and (10.8±0.6±1.0)% for muons.

We have measured the ratio of the cross section for γ+n→π0+n to the cross section for γ+p→π0+p at 4.7 and 8.2 GeV. The measurements were made by detecting the recoil nucleons in coincidence with the decay γ rays of the π0's produced from a deuterium target. At 4.7 GeV the cross-section ratio, R≡σ(γ+n→π0+n)σ(γ+p→π0+p), is less than 1.0 at low t, with an indication of a dip at about t=−0.7(GeVc)2, and rises to 1.0 at high t. The ratios at the higher energy have less structure and are uniformly closer to 1.0.

Data on inclusive kaon production in e+e− annihilations at energies in the vicinity of the ϒ(4S) resonance are presented. A clear excess of kaons is observed on the ϒ(4S) compared to the continuum. Under the assumption that the ϒ(4S) decays into BB¯, a total of 3.38±0.34±0.68 kaons per ϒ(4S) decay is found. In the context of the standard B-decay model this leads to a value for (b→c)(b→all) of 1.09±0.33±0.13.

We report measurements made with the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR) of the total cross section for e+e−→hadrons at the ϒ(1S), ϒ(2S), and ϒ(3S), and in the nearby nonresonant continuum. We find R=3.77±0.06 (statistical) ± 0.24 (systematic) for the ratio of the nonresonant hadronic cross section to the cross section for muon-pair production at a center-of-mass total energy W=10.4 GeV. For the leptonic decay widths Γee of the ϒ(1S), ϒ(2S), and ϒ(3S) we obtain 1.30±0.05±0.08, 0.52±0.03±0.04, and 0.42±0.04±0.03 keV, respectively.

We report measurements from the CLEO detector of the rate of Ξ and Λ production in e+e− interactions in the upsilon region. Hyperon production from the decay of the ϒ(1s) is compared with continuum e+e− data. The ratio of the production rates of Λ (and Λ―) to K0 (and K―0) on the ϒ(1s) is 0.21 ± 0.03, much larger than in the continuum, 0.07 ± 0.01. The ratios of the production rates of the Ξ and Λ are comparable, 0.10±0.02 [ϒ(1S)] and 0.07 ± 0.02 (continuum). We discuss some implications of the data for gluon and quark fragmentation models.
CONTINUUM IS ECM 10.38 TO 10.64 GEV.
We report measurements of single-particle inclusive spectra and two-particle correlations in decays of the Υ(1S) resonance and in nonresonant annihilations of electrons and positrons at center-of-mass energy 10.49 GeV, just below BB¯ threshold. These data were obtained using the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR) and provide information on the production of π, K, ρ, K*, φ, p, Λ, and Ξ in quark and gluon jets. The average multiplicity of hadrons per event for upsilon decays (compared with continuum annihilations) is 11.4 (10.5) pions, 2.4 (2.2) kaons, 0.6 (0.5) ρ0, 1.2 (0.8) K*, 0.6 (0.4) protons and antiprotons, 0.15 (0.08) φ, 0.19 (0.07) Λ and Λ¯, and 0.016 (0.005) Ξ− and Ξ¯ +. We have also seen evidence for η and f0 production. The most significant differences between upsilon and continuum final states are (1) the inclusive energy spectra fall off more rapidly with increasing particle energy in upsilon decays, (2) the production of heavier particles, especially baryons, is not as strongly suppressed in upsilon decays, and (3) baryon and antibaryon are more likely to be correlated at long range in upsilon decay than in continuum events.

As a part of the study of the inclusive production of electron pairs in pp collisions at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings (ISR), a search has been performed for additional photons accompanying J/ψ particles. The results suggest that (43±21)% of the J/ψ's are produced via the photonic decay of one of the χ(3.5) states.

We present the B( d θ d y ) y=0 for J /ψ over thefull range of ISR energies and for ϒ at √ s = 53 and 63 GeV, using their dielectron decay mode. The average transverse momentum and the decay angles are presented. We found ( p T ) = 1.75 ± 0.19 GeV for ϒ, being higher than ( p T ) of the continuum and rising with √s. We present a comparison of the cross sections of J/ψ and ϒ with those of the continuum, at the same masses, as a function of √s. An appropriate scaling of the hadronic production of quark-antiquark narrow bound states involving ⋉, J/ψ, ψ′, ϒ, and ϒ′ is presented as a function of m /√ s at y = 0, and is compared with Drell-Yan scaling.

The inclusive branching fraction for B-meson decay into D0 mesons and the momentum spectrum of the D0's have been measured. 0.8±0.2±0.2 D0 per B decay was found. The shape of the spectrum suggests an interesting picture of B-meson decay.

A measurement is presented of the inclusive production of charged D* and neutral D mesons from nonresonant e+e− annihilation in the energy region near the ϒ(4S) resonance. The momentum distribution shows a large contribution at high momenta as expected for heavy quark production. Comparison of the spectrum with several phenomenological models is made. The relative yields of the D* and D mesons indicate that the charm cross section is dominated by the D* contribution.

A measurement is presented of inclusive charged D*(2010) production from nonresonant e+e− annihilation in the center-of-mass energy (W) range 10.2 GeV<W<10.6 GeV. Charged D* mesons are identified by the decays D*+→D0π+→K−π+π+ and the charge conjugate mode. It is found that 40 ± 7 ± 13% of the charm quarks from the process e+e−→cc¯ result in D* mesons with z>0.7 (z=2EW, where E is the D* energy).

The charged multiplicity has been measured at the ϒ(4S) and a value of 5.75±0.1±0.2 has been obtained for the mean charged multiplicity in B-meson decay. Combining this result with the measurement of prompt leptons from B decay, the values 4.1±0.35±0.2 and 6.3±0.2±0.2 are found for the semileptonic and nonleptonic charged multiplicities, respectively. If b→c dominance is assumed for the weak decay of the B meson, then the semileptonic multiplicity is consistent with the recoil mass determined from the lepton momentum spectrum.

We present evidence for inclusive F-meson production in B-meson decay. The product branching fraction B(B→FX)B(F+→φπ+) is measured to be 0.0038±0.010. The F momentum spectrum indicates the presence of a large component of two-body final states in the decay B→FX.

We have measured the inclusive branching ratio for B→ψX to be (1.09±0.16±0.21)%, and the exclusive branching ratios for B−→ψK− and B¯ ¯0 *0 to be (0.09±0.05)% and (0.41±0.18)%, respectively. The mass difference between neutral and charged B mesons is 1.1±2.1 MeV, while the difference between the mass of Υ(4S) and twice the mean B-meson mass is 18.5±3.0 MeV. The ψ momentum distribution implies a substantial two-body decay (in agreement with direct measurements), but also some combination of B→ψX with MX>1.5 GeV, and B→ψ’X.
