Measurements of the polarization parameters and angular distributions are reported for π±p elastic scattering at 100 GeV/c and for pp elastic scattering at 100- and 300-GeV/c incident momentum. The π±p data cover the kinematic range 0.18≤−t≤1.10 GeV2 and are in agreement with current Regge-model predictions. The pp data cover the kinematic range 0.15≤−t≤1.10 GeV2 and 0.15≤−t≤2.00 GeV2 at 100 and 300 GeV/c, respectively, and are found to be consistent with absorption-model predictions.
The differential cross section of π+p elastic scattering has been measured in two high-statistics bubble-chamber exposures at laboratory beam momenta of 3.7 and 7.1 GeV/c. A new feature suggested by these data is a dip in dσdu at −u≃3 GeV2. This dip corresponds well to the third zero of J0(b−u′), where ℏcb=1 fm. The effective u-channel Regge trajectory computed for these two energies has a slope of 0.22 ± 0.26.
Results of two studies of small angle elastic scattering are presented. The first experiment measured hadron-nucleus elastic scattering at 70, 125, 175 GeV/c incident momentum. The second experiment is a high statistics study of hadron-proton elastic scattering at 200 GeV/c incident momentum. Hadron-nucleus elastic scattering was measured for $\mu^{\pm}$, $K^{\pm}$, $p$, and $\bar{p}$ scatterinq from Be, C, Al, Cu, Sn, and Pb targets at .incident beam momenta of 70 and 175 GeV/c and for $\mu^+$, $K^+$, and $p$ scattering from Be, Al, and Pb targets at an incident beam momentum of 125 GeV/c. Strong evidence is presented for quasi-two-body production of a π + p enhancement with mass 1881±6MeV and width 219±23MeV, recoiling off vector mesons ϱ O and ω from π + p interactions at 7.1 GeV/ c and K * o (890) from K + p interactions at 12 GeV/ c . The most probable J P assignment for this object is 7/2 + , making it a likely candidate for the Regge recurrence of Δ(1236).

Quasi-inclusive and total inclusive ϱ + , ϱ − and ϱ 0 cross sections have been studied, using data of a π + p and a pp bubble chamber experiment at 16 and 24 GeV/ c , respectively. In pp collisions it is found that the total inclusive cross sections for ϱ 0 , ϱ + and ϱ − production are about equal. This equality also holds for the differential cross sections d σ/ d y ∗ , all showing the characteristics of dominantly central production. In the π + p reactions the ϱ − are mainly produced centrally, whereas there are strong additional contributions in the beam fragmentation region for ϱ + and ϱ 0 mesons. In the central region, however, the cross sections for ϱ + , ϱ − and ϱ 0 production are almost equal within errors. All our findings agree with what is expected from quark model predictions.

The differential cross section d σ d t′ for the charge-exchange process π + p → π 0 ( π + p) at 8, 16 and 23 GeV/ c is presented for several regions of the π + p effective mass. It is found that the dip at t ′ ≈ 0.6 (GeV/ c ) 2 which is observed in the Δ(1236) mass band becomes a less pronounced structure in the higher mass regions. However, while the slope of the d σ d t′ distributions in the near-forward direction decreases strongly with increasing π + p mass, there is no evidence that the observed structure moves to higher values of t ′ as the π + p mass increases. These results are consistent with a Regge-exchange picture where the position of the dip is determined by the exchanged trajectory, but are inconsistent with a simple geometrical picture.

The polarization parameter for the reaction π−p→π0n has been measured at five incident been momenta between 1.03 and GeV/c. The results are compared with predictions of recent phase-shift analyses.
The inclusive production of Λ , K S 0 , Σ ± (1385) and K ∗± (892) in π − p interactions at 6 GeV/ c has been studied. Differential cross sections and polarizations have been measured for the reaction π − p → K 0 Λ and π − p → K 0 Σ 0 at 3.9 GeV/ c π − momentum. Comparison of these data with those of the related reactions K − n → π − Λ and K − p → π − Σ + (at approximately the same c.m. energy) indicate that simple Regge-pole models involving only K ∗ (890) and K ∗ (1420) exchange are unable to describe all the features of the data. On the other hand, comparison of the π − p → K 0 Σ 0 data with that of π + p → K + Σ + shows that the data are consistent with absence of exotic strange-meson exchange.
A comparison is made of the low-mass three-meson systems (πππ), (Kππ), (π K K ) and ( K K K ) diffractively produced in the reaction meson + proton → three mesons + proton. Several striking similarities and a few important differences are observed: (i) the reactions are consistent with the assumption that the three mesons decay entirely into a 0 − meson and a 0 + , 1 − or 2 + resonance; (ii) the three-meson mass spectra have a peak ≈ 250 MeV above the effective threshold M eff of the dominant decay mode and then fall off approximately as (mass) −3 ;(iii) the average spin 〈 J 〉 = 0.55 + 1.1 Q eff , where Q eff = M - M eff ; (iv) the average orbital angular momentum 〈 l 〉 increases according to 〈 l 〉 = 0.75 Q eff ; (v) the three-meson states are produced dominantly in unnatural spin-parity states and no evidence for their being resonant is found; (vi) the only natural spin-parity states found are the well-established 2 + resonances A 2 and K ∗ (1420); they have similar properties to the non-resonant unnatural parity states except for a dip at t = 0 in the dσ/d t distributions; (vii) both the unnatural and natural spin-parity states are produced mostly by an exchange of natural parity; (viii) there is evidence for two types of production mechanism with different polarization properties, one approximately conserving helicity in the t -channel and the other in the s -channel.

A high-statistics search for resonances in the π − p total cross section has been carried out over the incident momentum region from 2 to 14 GeV/ c . The measurements were performed with a transmission technique using multiwire proportional chambers in place of the conventional counter arrays. A microprocessor unit was used for the on-line analysis of the data, allowing a total of ≈ 50 000 events to be examined in a 300 ms burst. The search aimed at detecting the possible formation in π − p collisions of narrow non-strange baryon resonances. The momentum region was uniformly scanned with a total of ≈4500 mmeasurements in fixed fractional momentum steps of d P / P = 5 × 10 −4 . The relative statistical precision of each measurement was d σ / σ = ±0.3%. Within these limits no significant structure was detected.
Invariant single-particle cross sections for pion and proton production in π ± p interactions at 8 and 16 GeV/ c are presented in terms of integrated distributions as functions of x , reduced rapidity ζ and p ⊥ 2 , and also in terms of double differential cross sections E d 2 σ /(d x d p ⊥ 2 ) and d ζ d p ⊥ 2 ). The NA24 experiment at CERN investigated inclusive γγ, π0π0, and γπ0 final states in the mass range between 4 and 9 GeV/c2 produced in π−p, π+p, and pp reactions at a c.m.-system energy s=23.7 GeV. The π0π0 cross sections agree well with expectations of the quark-parton model. For γπ0 production in π−p and pp reactions, a clear signal is observed and cross sections are shown. The production of γγ events was observed with a statistical significance of 2.9σ in π−p reactions. The cross section is in agreement with a higher-order QCD prediction.

The average number of charged particles produced per inelastic interaction is 7.99±0.06. The elastic cross section is 3.18±0.13 mb and the total cross section is 24.19±0.44 mb. The inclusive cross sections for neutral-particle production are: σ(γ)=171.3±15.3 mb, σ(KS0)=3.64±0.61 mb (x<0.3), σ(Λ)=1.71±0.34 mb (x<0.3), and σ(Λ¯)=0.59±0.23 mb (x<0.1). The average number of π0's produced per inelastic collision is consistent with a linear rise with the number of charged particles, and about equal to the number of produced π− or π+. The average number of K0's, Λ's, and Λ¯'s is consistent with very little dependence on the number of charged particles. General characteristics of neutral-particle production are presented and compared with other experiments. For each topology the produced neutral energy is ∼13 of the incident energy.

Results are presented from a study of inclusive neutral strange particle production by a 147 GeV/ c tagged π + /K + /p beam in the Fermilab 30-inch hydrogen bubble chamber. The experiment made use of the proportional hybrid spectrometer system. Results are based on 995 K S 0 , 485 Λ, and 83 Λ found in a sample of 132 000 pictures. Cross sections are given for inclusive production of these particles by each of the three beam particles, and comparisons are made with measurements at other energies. Topological cross sections are also calculated, and KNO multiplicity scaling is investigated. Distributions are presented of invariant cross sections as functions of the Feynman scaling variable x and c.m. rapidity y . The transverse momentum-squared distributions with their fitted slopes are also given. Comparisons are made of the production characteristics for the three beam types.

In an experiment with the 30-inch Hybrid Spectrometer at Fermilab we have obtained the inclusive and semi-inclusive production cross sections of the ϱ0 meson using a conventional background subtraction technique. Production cross sections for the ϱ0 are derived as a function of the Feynman scaling variablex, and the transverse variablespt2 andEt=(pt2+M2)1/2. The longitudinal distributions are compared with the (1−x) dependence of the proton and meson valence quark structure functions, using various forms of recombination and fragmentation models. The transverse distributions are compared with thermodynamic models. We give density matrix elements for the ϱ0 production from pions in the extreme forward region.

Analyzing powers of pion-proton elastic scattering have been measured at PSI with the Low Energy Pion Spectrometer LEPS as well as a novel polarized scintillator target. Angular distributions between 40 and 120 deg (c.m.) were taken at 45.2, 51.2, 57.2, 68.5, 77.2, and 87.2 MeV incoming pion kinetic energy for pi+ p scattering, and at 67.3 and 87.2 MeV for pi- p scattering. These new measurements constitute a substantial extension of the polarization data base at low energies. Predictions from phase shift analyses are compared with the experimental results, and deviations are observed at low energies.

We present data on inclusive and semi-inclusive ϱ 0 production in 147 GeV/ c π − p interactions. We find a total cross section of 7.3 ± 1.3 mb. The P T 2 dependence of ϱ 0 production, 〈: n > ϱ 0 per event, and the ϱ 0 / π + ratios are also discussed.

The logarithmic slope of the differentical cross section for K ± p elastic scattering at 10 and 14 GeV, and for π ± p and p ± p at 10GeV has been measured. Rich structure is observed in the forward slope for all processes, which is well accounted for by the properties of a peripheral exchange amplitude for the nonexotic reactions, and by a peripheral component of the diffractive amplitude as clearly seen in the exotic processes, K ± p and pp.

We report on a measurement of the missing-mass, (mm)−, spectrum from the reaction π−+p→(mm)−+p at 8 GeV. The data contain 6500 events in the R peak (M2=2.72±0.02 GeV2, Γ=139±31 MeV). The R shape is consistent with either a single Breit-Wigner or several wide resonances, as suggested by bubble-chamber experiments, but inconsistent with the series of narrow resonances reported by the CERN missing-mass group.

An experiment using optical spark chambers and a neutron time-of-flight hodoscope has been performed at the Argonne National Laboratory on the reaction π−p→ω0n. The differential cross section and the experimentally accessible density-matrix elements were determined in the momentum transfer interval 0.05≤|t|≤1.0 (GeV/c)2 at each of three incident pion momenta 3.65, 4.50, and 5.50 GeV/c. Our results show the following general features: (1) a dip in the forward differential cross section for |t|≤0.2 (GeV/c)2, (2) a slope at larger momentum transfers which increases as the incident pion momentum increases, and (3) no dips in either dσdt or ρ11+ρ1−1, the natural-parity exchange combination, at |t|=0.6 (GeV/c)2.

We have studied the inclusive production of K*±(890) and Y*±(1385) in pp, π+p, and K+p interactions at 147 GeV/c. The experiment used the Fermilab 30-inch hydrogen bubble chamber with the hybrid spectrometer system. Results are based on a sample of 1916 observed KS and 932 observed A. Inclusive cross sections are given for K*± and Y*± production from the three beams, and comparisons are made with experiments at other energies. Feynman-x and transverse-momentum-squared distributions are also calculated. The results suggest that the K*− is entirely produced in the central region, while the K*+ includes a component from beam fragmentation. Comparisons are made with the additive quark model.

Evidence is presented for a new meson resonance at 2340±20 MeV, with a width of 180±60 MeV, decaying primarily into ρρπ. The resonance, which is observed in 15-GeV/c π+p interactions, has isotopic spin 1 or 2 and odd G parity. The cross section for production of the ρρπ state is 7.3±1.7 μb. Branching ratios into ρρπ and other decay modes are given.

From the study of the reaction π − p→p F p p π − using a fast proton (p F ) trigger device in the CERN Omega spectrometer, we find evidence for two narrow p p states produced mainly in association with a Δ° (1232) and a N° (1520). The statistical significance of each peak is greater than 6 standard deviations. Masses and natural widths of these resonances are respectively M = 2020 ± 3 MeV , Λ 1 = 24 ± 12 MeV and M 2 = 2204 ± 5 MeV, Λ 2 = 16 −16 +20 MeV. Our data are consistent with a small production of the narrow ∼ 1935 MeV resonance already reported. Production cross sections for these new p p resonances are given.

We have studied the spin-parity structure of the 3π system produced opposite a proton or Δ++ in π+p interactions at 15 GeV/c. Our results suggest that the broad enhancement at 1.1 GeV, traditionally associated with the A1, does not have the properties usually associated with a resonant state. We obtain similar results for the A3 and A4 enhancements.

We have measured elastic pion-proton scattering in a 50 GeV/ c π − beam at the 76 GeV proton synchrotron in Serpukhov. Data are presented for four-momenta transfer squared in the range 0.03 < t < 0.4 (GeV/ c ) 2 .

The π − p→ ωω n reaction has studied for the first time at the 70 GeV IHEP accelerator. The six photons from the decay of the two ω mesons were detected in GAMS-2000, a hodoscope multi-photon spectometer. Two resonances decaying into ωω,X (1640) and X(1960), have been observed. Their quantum numbers are J PC =2 ++ , I G =0 + . The reaction is dominated by the one-pion exchange mechanism. The production cross sections σ. BR(X→ ωω ) are 0.65±0.15 μ b and 1.0±0.2 μ b, respectively.
