Inclusive Baryon Production in e+ e- Annihilation

The inclusive production of antiprotons and Λ's in e+e− annihilation has been measured as a function of the c.m. energy in the range 3.7-7.6 GeV. We find that the baryon cross section has a behavior different from the total hadronic production. Our results show a rapid rise in the ratio σp¯σμμ between 4.4 and 5 GeV, consistent with what would be expected from charmed baryon production. Λ¯ production is 10-15% of p¯ production at all energies.

Evidence for Direct $\gamma$ Production at Large $x$ in $\psi$ (3100) Decay

The inclusive γ and π0 momentum spectra from ψ(3100) decay have been measured in e+e− annihilation at SPEAR. When the γ spectrum is compared with that expected from π0 decay, an excess of high-momentum γ's is observed. This excess is compared with that predicted by quantum chromodynamics for the decay of the ψ into a γ and two gluons.

Lambda Production in the Fragmentation Processes Target Fragmentation of Proton Into Lambda and Beam Fragmentation of K- Into Lambda at 4.25-GeV/c

In the reaction K − +p→ Λ +X at 4.25 GeV/ c both the target fragmentation of the proton into lambda and the beam fragmentation of kaon into lambda have been studied. The sample consists of 21 000 Λ events with t >−1.0 (GeV/ c ) 2 and 9000 Λ events with u > −1.0 (GeV/ c ) 2 . Abundant π 0 and meson resonance production for residual masses M x <1.1 GeV/ c 2 is observed. In the t -channel of am effective exchange trajectory is deduced. which lies between the K and K(890) trajectories. In the u -channel the effective exchange trajectory is in good agreement with a nucleon trajectory. The extrapolated average pion multiplicities of the residual mass system in the t -channel are in very good agreement with the values measured in antiproton-proton annihilations at rest.

Production of xi- and antixi+ particles in k+ p collisions at 12.7 gev/c

The cross section for the production of Ξ + particles in K + p interactions at 12.7 GeV/ c is 10 ± 3 μ b; the Ξ − production cross section is 2.5 ± 1.0 μ b; the upper limit on Ω − or Ω + production is 0.4 μb. The Ξ − are produced preferentially in the backward direction in the CM system while the Ξ + are produced mainly forward. The mass and lifetime of the Ξ + agree with the accepted values for the Ξ − hyperon.

Single photoproduction of neutral pi mesons on hydrogen in the forward direction at 4 gev

The differential cross section of the reaction γ p → π 0 p has been measured at the Deutsches Elektronen Synchrotron DESY, Hamburg, at a mean photon energy of 4.0 GeV in the four-momentum transfer range between t = −0.2 (GeV/ c ) 2 and t = −1,2 (GeV/ c ) 2 in steps of approximately 0.08 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The experiment was carried out in connection with the measurements of the photoproduction of π 0 mesons on deuterium, which were described in the preceding article. In the present paper the contributions arising from background reactions are discussed in more detail.
