The center of mass longitudinal momentum distributions of π− mesons produced in K+p interactions at 12.7 GeV/c and in π+p interactions at 7 GeV/c exhibit an asymmetry similar to that observed, for example, in single particle production in 25 GeV/c π−p interactions. This asymmetry is discussed in terms of quark structure of hadrons and other dynamical models.

From a study of peripheral interactions wherein a negative pion of 12 or 18 GeV/c incident on a nucleon produced a pair of high-momentum pions, the pion-pion s-wave interaction was deduced. Normalizing to to the ϱo production cross sections, a pion-pion cross section falling smoothly from 50 mb (300 MeV) to 20 mb (600 MeV) is observed. The forward-backward asymmetry is negative for low dipion masses.

Data on the reactions π − p → p π − , p p → π + π − , K − p → pK and p p → p p at 8 and 12 GeV/ c are presented. Our results agree with line reversal symmetry (between π − p → p π − and p p → π + π − ), Regge pole behaviour for non-exotic reactions ( π − p → p π − , p p → π + π − ), and universal behaviour for exotic reactions ( p p → p p , K − p → pK − ) with d σ /d u | u =0 ∼ s −10 excluding the existence of a “glory” mechanism in p p elastic backward scattering in our energy range.

The analysis of exclusive neutral strange particle production in the reactions π − p → K° Λ + K° Σ ° and p p → Λ Λ + Λ Σ° + c.c. at 3.15, 4.95, 7.9 and 12 GeV/ c yielded the differential cross section distributions up to about 90° c.m.s. scattering angle and the Λ-particle polarization at large transverse momentum. Applying a fit to d σ /d t ∞ s − n resulted in n = 8.6 ± 0.9 for the K° Λ + K° Σ° final state which is compatible with the quark counting rule n = 8 for meson-baryon reactions. The average Λ polarization around t = −1.6 (GeV/ c ) 2 was P Λ = 0.79 ± 0.17 at 3.15 GeV/ c beam energy.

Results from a partial wave analysis of theKππ system produced in the hypercharge exchange reaction π−p→(K+π−π0)Λ at 3.95 GeV/c are presented. SignificantQ1 production is observed but no evidence is found forQ2 production thus confirming the results obtained in a previous decay Dalitz plot analysis of the same reaction. The relative phase behaviour of the 1+(Kϱ) partial waves obtained with the present analysis provides additional confirmation of the resonance interpretation of theQ1 enhancement. Information is also obtained about its production properties and the role played by the Λ polarization in the hypercharge exchange reaction. This is compared with the results obtained in the reactionK−p→(π+π−π0)Λ at 4 GeV/c.

Results from a high-statistics experiment involving an exposure of the SLAC 82-in. hydrogen bubble chamber to a beam of 8-GeV/c π− yielding a final state of π−π+π−p are presented. Copious production of ρ, Δ++, and f is found. Considerable quasi-two-body production in which one particle decays to one of the above resonances is also observed. Some double-resonance production involving baryon and meson resonances is also seen. The production properties of ρ, Δ++, and f mesons are well described by a double-Regge model.

Results of a high-statistics study of elastic scattering and meson resonances produced by π−p interactions at 8 GeV/c are presented. Large statistics and small systematic errors permit examination of the complete kinematic region. Total differential cross sections are given for ρ0,−, f0, g0,−, Δ±, Δ0, and N* resonances. Spin-density matrix elements and Legendre-polynomial moments are given for ρ, f, and Δ resonances. The results for ρ0 and f0 resonances are compared with the predictions of a Regge-pole-exchange model. Properties of the above resonances are compared and discussed. In particular, we present evidence that the ρ0 and f0 production mechanisms are similar. The similarity of the g0 t distribution to that of the ρ0 and f0 suggests a common production mechanism for all three resonances.

We have measured the polarization for elastic scattering in the reaction π−p→π−p at 2.93 and 3.25 GeV/c using a polarized proton target and multiwire proportional chambers (MWPC's) with emphasis on large-angle scattering. Events were selected by fast scintillation-counter logic. Beam trajectories were measured with four MWPC's and the scattered-particle angles were measured with one or two MWPC's; elastic events were determined by coplanarity and angle-angle correlations. The polarization is in agreement with previous measurements below |t|=2.0 (GeV/c)2, and crosses from negative to positive near the secondary dip in the differential cross section dσdt. In the backward region, an energy dependence appears with the polarization being large and negative at 2.93 GeV/c and consistent with zero at 3.25 GeV/c.

Q-meson production is studied in the hypercharge exchange reaction π-p → (Kππ)Λ at 3.95 GeV/c by selecting events witht(π- →Kππ)>1.2GeV2. An enhancement with a mass of 1294±10 MeV and a width of 66±15 MeV is observed in the (Kππ) mass distribution. A spin-parity analysis of the (Kππ) decay Dalitz plot shows the enhancement to be in theJP=1+S(Kϱ) wave and is therefore attributed toQ1-meson production. No evidence is found for the decayQ1→K0ω but limited statistics allow only placing an upper limit of 30% for the decay ratioKω/Kϱ0. TheQ1 production cross section fort(π- →Kππ)>1.2GeV2 is 8±1.3 μb. No evidence is found for the process π-p→Q2Λ withQ2→K*π for which the partial wave analysis gives an upper cross section limit of 2.5 μb at the 95% confidence level.

Exotic exchange processes observed in K − p and π − p scattering in the neighbourhoood of 4 GeV/ c are analysed in terms of standard models. Some new data on π − p induced processes are presented and used in the analysis. Regge-Regge cut predictions are found to be smaller than the data up to these energies. Baryonium exchange models are shown to be indistindistinguishable from Regge cut models as regards their phenomenological predictions. The double scattering quark model of Białas and Zalewski is compatible with data on the exotic exchange production of Σ and Y ∗ (1385), but fails for Ξ and Ξ ∗ (1530) production. The E(1420) quantum numbers are determined to be I G J P =0 + 1 + with a branching ratio E → K ∗ K + c.c E →[δπ+( K ∗ K + c.c. )]=0.86±0.12 , where δ→ K K . The cross section for the reaction π − p→En, with E→K 0 K ± π ± , is 8.2±1.0 μ b. Forward and backward productions are observed in the approximate ratio 2:1. The ratio R of the differential cross sections for π - p→ η ′n and π - p → η n has been measured with high statistics and small systematic errors at 8.45 GeV/ c . R is generally interpreted as the relative content of nonstrange, ground-state quarks in η' and η. We find that R decreases with increasing ⋎ t ⋎; however, extrapolation to t =0 gives R (0) = 0.672 ± 0.032 (statistical) ± 0.47 (systematic) for the dominant spin flip cross sections, and R (0) = 0.500 ± 0.035 for the spin non-flip, in excellent agreement with results at higher energy. We perform an amplitude analysis of 10 GeV/ c π − p → K − K S 0 p data as a function of K − K 0 mass from threshold up to 2 GeV. In a single-arm spectrometer experiment, high-precision measurements of dσdt for π−p, K−p, and p¯p elastic scattering have been made at 8 and 16 GeV/c. The π−p data show rich structure at 8 GeV/c, indicative of strong non-Pomeron contributions, while the 16-GeV/c data are much smoother. For −t≳1 (GeV/c)2 there is a strong s dependence while there is very little for −t<1 (GeV/c)2. For p¯p scattering the forward region is smoothly diffractive for −t<0.4 (GeV/c)2 and shows antishrinkage. The exponential slope parameter b is measured to be 12.36 ± 0.04 (GeV/c)−2 at 8 GeV/c and 11.40 ± 0.04 (GeV/c)−2 at 16 GeV/c. The structure near −t=0.6 (GeV/c)2 seen at lower energies is still obvious at 16 GeV/c. The K−p data show some structure at 8 GeV/c, but can be represented adequately by a quadratic exponential form. At 16 GeV/c the K−p angular distribution shows antishrinkage and lies above the 8-GeV/c cross section for 0.11<−t<0.8 (GeV/c)2.

We have studied backward baryon and meson production in π−p→pπ+π−π− at 8.0 GeV/c using a streamer chamber triggered by the detection of a fast forward proton. Our data sample (1227 events) displays prominent N*ρ and N*f quasi-two-body production. These states are investigated with regard to the peripheral nature of the production mechanism and sequential decay of the excited baryon and meson systems. The quasi-two-body production of N*ρ and N*f intermediate states is consistent with u-channel proton exchange as the dominant production mechanism. In the π+π−π− mass distribution we observe a 3- to 4- standard-deviation enhancement at M3π=1897±17 MeV/c2 with full width at half maximum = 110 ± 82 MeV/c2, but find no but find no evidence for backward A1 or A2 production. Angular distributions of π + and K + p elastic scattering have been measured for an incident beam momentum of 10.0 GeV/ c . For π + p elastic scattering almost the complete angular distribution was measured. The angular distribution of proton-proton elastic scattering was measured for an incident momentum of 9.0 GeV/ c in the interval of the four-momentum transfer squared from 0.7 (GeV/ c ) 2 to 5.0 (GeV/ v ) 2 . For π + p elastic scattering the structures at − t = 2.8 (GeV/ c ) 2 and − t = 4.8 (GeV/ c ) 2 are less pronounced than at lower momenta. The cross section for scattering at 90° in the c.m. system is of the order of 1 nb/GeV/ c ) 2 . For K + p elastic scattering is a break in the angular distribution around − t = 3 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The differential cross sections for proton-proton elastic scattering decrease smoothly with increasing momentum transfers.

The reaction π−p→X−p, X−→ηπ−, η→γγ has been studied in an optical spark-chamber experiment at the Argonne ZGS (Zero Gradient Synchrotron) at a beam momentum of 6.0 GeV/c and with 0.27≤|t|≤0.42 (GeV/c)2. The ηπ mass spectrum contains about 1400 events in the mass range 0.80<M(ηπ)<1.55 GeV/c2, and is dominated by approximately 1000 events of the type A2−→ηπ−. No structure is discernible within the A2 mass spectrum for an experimental resolution of 7.1 MeV/c2 [16.7 MeV/c2 FWHM (full width at half maximum)]. A single D-wave Breit-Wigner distribution fits the data with a high confidence level, yielding for the A2 the parameters M0=1.323±0.003 GeV/c2 and Γ0=0.108±0.009 GeV/c2. The angular distribution of the decay A2−→ηπ− is analyzed and the resultant density matrix elements have the values ρ11=0.45±0.02, ρ1−1=0.45±0.04, and ρ00=0.09±0.04. All other elements are consistent with zero. Finally, the missing-mass spectrum in the region of the A2 is presented. A signal of 230 events above background per 5-MeV/c2 interval is observed at the A2 peak, with a signal to background ratio of greater than 1:1. A single D-wave Breit-Wigner distribution together with a quadratic background fits the data well, with the parameters for the A2 being M0=1.324±0.003 GeV/c2 and Γ0=0.104±0.009 GeV/c2. Both A2 mass spectra are incompatible with the dipole shape.

THIS FIT ASSUMES ALL OTHER DENSITY MATRIX ELEMENTS (RHO(2M) AND RE(RHO(10))) ARE ZERO SINCE THEY ARE QUITE CONSISTENT WITH ZERO IN A FULL FIT. QUOTED ERRORS INCLUDE SYSTEMATIC ERRORS, WHILE STATISTICAL FITTING ERRORS ARE SHOWN SEPARATELY.
A comparison is made of the properties and production mechanisms of the π + ω and K − ω systems produced in the reactions π + p → π + ω p at 4, 5, 8 and 16 GeV/ c and K − p → K − ω p at 10 and 16 GeV/ c . In the π + ω case apeak is observed at 1.23 GeV (the B meson), while the K − ω mass distribution has a threshold enhancement. The cross section of the low mass (<2.0 GeV) π + ω system falls as p lab −2 , while that of the low mass (<2.0 GeV) K − ω system is almost constant with energy, indicating diffractive production of the K − ω system, but not of the πω system. Using a modified version of the Illinois partial-wave analysis program, it is found that the K − ω system is dominantly produced in the J P = 1 + state with small contributions of 0 − and 2 + , mainly by natural parity exchange - as is found for reactions such as K − p → (K − π + π − )p which are predominantly diffractive. For the π + ω system in the B mass region, J P = 1 + states, produced mainly by natural parity exchange are found; the contributions of 0 − P, 1 − P, 2 − P and 2 + D are consistent with zero. The 1 + D state occurs in the π + ω case but not in the K − ω system, nor in the K ππ − system produced in the K − p → K ππ p reaction.
