The reaction π − p → ηφ has been studied at 1.8 GeV/ c incident pion momentum using the Bologna-CERN NBC set-up, in order to investigate the electromagnetic decay mode φ → ηγ . We observed (27 ± 6) events, yielding a branching ratio Γ(φ → ηγ) Γ(φ → total ) = (7.3 ± 1.9)% . The theoretical implications of this result are discussed.
ASSUMING THE TOTAL PHI CROSS SECTION IS 35 +- 5 MUB, THIS YIELDS THE BRANCHING RATIO OF (7.3 +- 1.9) PCT FOR PHI --> ETA GAMMA.
41 ± 8 events of the type X 0 → γγ have been observed in a study of the reaction π − p → n(X 0 → γγ ) at 1.6 GeV/ c incident π -momentum. This provides further evidence to our previous observation of this new X 0 decay mode and allows the determination of the branching ratio Γ(X 0 →γγ) Γ(X 0 → total =(1.7 ± 0.4)%. The theoretical implications of this result are discussed.
THIS MEASUREMENT WHEN COMBINED WITH THE ETAPRIME PRODUCTION CROSS SECTION OF M. BASILE ET AL., NC 3A, 371 (1971) YIELDS A BR(ETAPRIME --> 2GAMMA) OF 1.7 +- 0.4 PCT.
The reactions π−p→ n+(X0→total) and π−p→ n+(X0→neutrals) have been studied at 1.6 GeV/c with the Bologna-CERN neutron missing-mass spectrometer. Both reactions have been detected without the use of visual techniques. The results are: σ(X0→total)=(108±14) μb and σ(X0→neutrals)=(20.0±3.5) μb, giving a branching ratio Γ(X0→neutrals)/Γ(X0→total)=(18.5±2.2)%. The branching ratio for other possible, so far undetected, neutral decay modes of the X0 turns out to be (2.4±1.9)%.

The s dependence of the proton form factor in the time-like region has been determined up to s =4.2 GeV 2 , assuming the validity of the | G e | = | G m | = | G | hypothesis. Data were taken in a dedicated experiment performed at the LEAR antiproton ring at CERN, increasing by one order of magnitude the available statistics on the proton form factor near threshold in the time-like region. Our result consist of cross section measurements of the p p → e + e − reaction for different beam momenta in the kinematical r 3.6⩽ s ⩽4.2 GeV 2 . The observed s dependence of the form factor close to threshold differs appreciably from the one suggested by previous experiments.

The s dependence of the electromagnetic proton form factors in the time-like region has been determined from the threshold ( s = 4 M p 2 ) up to s = 4.2 GeV 2 . Data were collected in a dedicated experiment performed at the LEAR antiproton ring at CERN, increasing by one order of magnitude the available statistics. Total and differential cross section of the p p → e − e + reaction have been measured. The electric and magnetic form factors are found to have comparable value. The observed form factor shows a clear steep s dependence close to the threshold.

A measurement of the total cross section for the reaction p p → π + π − has been performed for seven values of the incident momentum between 158 and 275 MeV/ c . The values obtained, if compared with previous results at higher momenta, agree with a 1/ß dependence. The differential cross section sssumed over the whole incident momentum range has also been measured and the result of a fit by Legendre polynomials is given.

Analyzing a sample of 220 000 events from an experiment still in progress at the CERN Proton Synchrotron (PS), 60 pairs of electrons with an energy above 700 MeV have been observed. The electrons, produced by annihilation of antiprotons stopped in a liquid-hydrogen target, are detected with optical spark chambers and scintillation counters. Twenty-nine out of these 60 pairs have been found to be collinear; normalizing with respect to the hadronic two-body channels π + π − and K + K − , a braching ratio B ee =Γ( p ̄ p → e + e − )/Γ( p ̄ p → total ) = (3.2 ± 0.9) × 10 −7 has been obtained

Cross sections for the reaction pp¯→e+e− have been measured at s=8.9,12.4, and 13.0 GeV2. The cross sections have been analyzed to obtain the proton electromagnetic form factors in the timelike region. We find that GM(q2)∝q−4αs2(q2) for q2≥5 (GeV/c)2.

The first search for ultra-rare $K^+$ decays into the $\pi^+e^+e^-e^+e^-$ final state is reported, using a dataset collected by the NA62 experiment at CERN in 2017-2018. An upper limit of $1.4\times 10^{-8}$ at 90% CL is obtained for the branching ratio of the $K^+\to\pi^+e^+e^-e^+e^-$ decay, predicted in the Standard Model to be $(7.2\pm0.7)\times 10^{-11}$. Upper limits at 90% CL are obtained at the level of $10^{-9}$ for the branching ratios of two prompt decay chains involving pair-production of hidden-sector mediators: $K^+\to\pi^+aa$, $a\to e^+e^-$ and $K^+\to\pi^+S$, $S\to A^\prime A^\prime$, $A^\prime\to e^+e^-$.
Differential cross sections for p p elastic scattering have been measured for very small momentum transfers at six different incident antiproton momenta in the range 3.7 to 6.2 GeV/c by the detection of recoil protons at scattering angles close to 90°. Forward scattering parameters σ T , b , and ϱ have been determined. For the ϱ-parameter, up to an order of magnitude higher level of precision has been achieved compared to that in earlier experiments. It is found that existing dispersion theory predictions are in disagreement with our results for the ϱ-parameter.
