Pion-Nucleon Total Cross Sections from 0.5 to 2.65 GeV/c

Inspire Record 54182 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.250

Total cross sections of π+ and π− mesons on protons and deuterons have been measured in a transmission experiment to relative accuracies of ±0.2% over the laboratory momentum range 0.46-2.67 GeV/c. The systematic error is estimated to be about ±0.5% over most of the range, increasing to about ±2% near both ends. Data have been obtained at momentum intervals of 25-50 MeV/c with a momentum resolution of ±0.6%. No new structure is observed in the π±p total cross sections, but results differ in several details from previous experiments. From 1-2 GeV/c, where systematic erros are the smallest, the total cross section of π− mesons on deuterons is found to be consistently higher than that of π+ mesons by (1.3±0.3)%; about half of this difference may be understood in terms of Coulomb-barrier effects. The πd and πN total cross sections are used to check the validity of the Glauber theory. Substantial disagreements (up to 2 mb) are observed, and the conclusion is drawn that the Glauber theory is inadequate in this momentum range.

We describe a search for psi(3770) decay to two-body non-DDbar final states in e+e- data produced by the CESR collider and analyzed with the CLEO-c detector. Vector-pseudoscalar production of Rho0Pi0, Rho+Pi-, OmegaPi0, PhiPi0, RhoEta, OmegaEta, PhiEta, RhoEtaPrime, OmegaEtaPrime, PhiEtaPrime, Kstar0 K0bar, and Kstar+K- is studied along with that of BOnePi (BOne0Pi0 and BOne+Pi-) and Pi+Pi-Pi0. A statistically significant signal is found for PhiEta, at an excess cross section of (2.4 +- 0.6) pb [Gamma_{PhiEta} (psi(3770)) =(74 +- 16)Mev], and a suggestive suppression of Pi+Pi-Pi0 and RhoPi. We conclude with form factor determinations for OmegaPi0, RhoEta, and RhoEtaPrime.

In an experiment with the 1.5 m bubble chamber at the Rutherford Laboratory, the reaction K + d→K 0 pp has been studied at beam momenta of 2.2, 2.45 and 2.7 GeV/ c . The cross section for the reaction K + n→K 0 p has been estimated and found to be approximately twice that of the line-reversed reaction K − p → K 0 n at comparable energies. An SU(3) sum rule, due to Barger and Cline, has been tested and found not to be valid in this momentum range. The differential cross section for K + n→K 0 p has also been measured and a determination made of the imaginary to real ratio of the forward amplitude, using the optical theorem. Implications of these, and other results, for various Regge models are briefly discussed.

The reactions K + n → K + π + π − n, K + n → K 0 π + π − p and K + n → K + π − π 0 p have b investigated in a 3.8 event/μb K + d bubble chamber experiment with incident momenta of 2.2, 2.45 and 2.7 GeV/ c . Channel cross sections are given and the general characteristics of the production processes described. The isobar model is used in an attempt to determine the spin-parity structure of the final states.

Measurement of Differential Cross-Sections for Elastic K+ p Scattering in the Momentum Range 0.7-GeV/c to 1.9-GeV/c

Charles, B.J. ; Cowan, I.M. ; Edwards, T.R.M. ; et al.
Nucl.Phys.B 131 (1977) 7-53, 1977.
Inspire Record 126513 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.8361

Differential cross sections for elastic K + p scattering have been measured at nineteen momenta between 0.7 and 1.9 GeV/ c . The data represent between 10 thousand and 20 thousand elastic events at each momentum and cover a wide range of scattering angles ( −0.98 ≲ cos θ ∗ ≲ 0.95 ). A computer controlled system of scintillation counters and acoustic spark chambers was used to detect the elastic events. Various internal consistency checks indicate that the absolute normalization of the data is accurate to within 2–3%. The cross sections show a smooth transition from an isotropic angular distribution to a dominant forward peak over the range covered by the experiment. Phase-shift analyses including these results show little evidence for a direct-channel resonance, and fitting the results by t - and u -channel exchange processes alone gives a good fit.

d ̄ p and p ̄ d total cross-sections have been measured at 13.3 and 6.65 GeV/ c respectively to check CPT-invariance. The standard transmission technique was used. The difference of d ̄ p and p ̄ d total cross-sections appeared to be equal 0.2 ± 2.6 mb. In addition d ̄ d and p ̄ p total cross-sections have been obtained. The experimental data allowed us to derive the total cross-section of antineutrons on protons, neutrons and deutrons.
