The cross section forπ0 production in the forward hemisphere (X>0) isσ(π0)=(49.7 ± 1.0 ± 1.1) mb and for η withX>0.1,Nch>2,σ(η0)=(3.1 ± 0.5) mb. The ratio of theπ0 toη0 cross section forX>0.1,Nch>2 isσ(π0)/σ(η0). Results on FeynmanX andpT distributions are presented. The data were obtained using the European Hybrid Spectrometer EHS and the bubble chamber LEBC at CERN.

The inclusive cross sections for forward D meson production at s =26 GeV in π − p interactions have been measured to be: σ(π − p → D 0 / D 0 + X ) x F >0 = (10.1±2.2)μ b , σ(π − p → D ±+ X ) x F >0 = (5.7±1.6)μ b . The distribution in x F for all D and for x F >0 has the form d σ/ d x F =107 −37 +39 (1−x F ) 7.5 −1.7 +2.5 +5.4 −3.8 +6.0 (1−x F ) 0.7 −0.7 1.0 μ b , with evidence for leading D production. The p T 2 distribution is exponential with slope parameter [−1.18 −0.16 +0.18 ]( GeV / c) −2 . The data are compared with predictions from first-order quark/gluon fusion calculations.

A study of the properties of charm particles produced in 360 GeV/c π-p interactions is reported. The experiment was performed using the high resolution hydrogen bubble chamber LEBC in association with the European Hybrid Spectrometer at the CERN SPS. Details of the exposure and operation of the spectrometer are given and the methods used to extract the charm data are presented. The essential physics results on the decay properties (lifetime, branching ratios) as well as on the hadroproduction properties (cross sections forD,\(\bar D\),F, Λc,D, correlations between charm particles) are given.

We present the results of a search for charm F mesons in 360 GeV/ c π − p interactions. Several methods have been used; all yield no evidence for the F and are interpreted as 90% confidence level cross section upper limits.

A determination of branching ratios for D meson decays into all charged particle final states is reported. The values obtained: (D ± → K ∓ π ± π ± /all D ± ) = (14 ± 6)% and ( D 0 /D 0 → K ± π ∓ π + π − /all D 0 /D 0 ) = (10 ± 4)%, are higher than those currently accepted. This result, if confirmed, implies a corresponding reduction in the accepted values for some total cross section measurements. Charm D-meson production in 360 GeV π − p interactions has been studied using the high-resolution hydrogen bubble chamber LEBC and the European Hybrid Spectrometer. The data show evidence for leading quark effects both in the number of D-meson types and in the Feynman x distributions. The production cross section is of the form d 2 δ d x d p T 2 ∞(1-x) n exp (-ap T 2 ) with n = 2.8±0.8 and a = 1.1±0.3 (GeV/ c ) −2 . The x distribution is, however, compatible with the presence of both central ( n = 6) and leading (n = 1) D / D production. The fraction of D-messons in the leading component is estimated to be ≈30%. The rapidity gap between members of reconstructed charm pairs is small compared to the available rapidity range. The inclusive cross section for single D-messons in the forward direction is: δ(D/ D )=(40 8 +15 )μ b ( for x>0) .

The total and differential cross sections and the density matrix elements of the Σ(1385) are presented. The results are compared with those obtained for the related processesπpp→K+∑+(1385) and\(K^ -p \to \pi ^ \mp\sum ^ \pm(1385)\) in this energy range. Evidence is presented for the existence of production mechanisms with exotic exchanges in thet channel.

The reactionsπ−p→K0(890) Λ,K0(890)Σ0 andK0(890)Σ0 are studied at an incident momentum of 3.95 GeV/c using data from a high statistics bubble chamber experiment corresponding to ∼90 events/μb. The reactions π+p→Σ+(1385)K+ and π+p→Σ+(1385)K*+(890) are examined. The Σ+(1385)K+ differential cross section for −t′<0.5 GeV2 and spin density matrix elements agree with a Regge-pole model incorporating (nondegenerate) vector and tensor K* exchange with dominant M1 coupling. The Σ+(1385)K*+(890) density matrix elements are consistent with the quark-additivity predictions. A Y*+ at a mass of 1700 MeV is also observed in the Λπ+ mass distribution, produced opposite both K+ and K*+(890).

A high-mass Δ resonance is observed in several final states from π + p interactions at 10.3 GeV/ c . We obtain fitted mass and width values for this structure of 1871 ± 22 MeV and 205 ± 43 MeV, respectively. The branching ratios for decays to π + p, p π + π 0 , n π + π + and Σ + K + are found to be 0.48 ± 0.15, 0.26 ± 0.07, 0.24 ± 0.07 and 0.03 ± 0.01, respectively. The Δϱ, Δω differential cross sections and the ϱ 0 density matrix elements are examined.
