The inclusive cross sections for η production by the interactions of 280 GeV/c momentum π−, π+, and proton beams in hydrogen have been measured. The kinematical range covered is −0.45<xF<0.45, and 4.0<PT<7.0 GeV/c for FeynmanxF and transverse momentum respectively. The η to π0 cross section ratios are given for the three reactions. The inclusive cross sections for prompt photon production by π− and π+ on protons have been measured with a beam momentum of 280 GeV/c using a fine grained electromagnetic calorimeter and the CERN Omega spectrometer. The transverse momentum and FeynmanxF ranges covered are 4.0<pT<7.0GeV/c and −0.45<xF<0.55 respectively. A quantitative comparison of the prompt photon cross section with next-to-leading order QCD predictions using Duke and Owens structure functions is performed.

The spin rotation parameter R has been measured for elastic π − p scattering at 40 GeV/ c , at four momentum transfers t ranging from −0.19 to −0.52 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The average value within this interval is R π − p = -0.200± 0.023. The resulting constraints on the πN scattering amplitudes are discussed. The experiments also yields an average value for K − p scattering, R K − p scattering, R K − p = -0.16±0.16.
Measurements were made of the cross section of the reactions π − p → ν ′(958)n, η ′ → 2 γ at momenta at 15, 20, 25, 30 and 40 GeV/c. The experiment was carried out on the IHEP 70 GeV accelerator using the 648 channel hodoscope spectrometer NICE for γ-ray detection. A total of 6000 η′ mesons were recorded. A sharp drop is seen in the differential cross section for t → 0. The dependences of the differential cross sections for the π − p → η ′n and π − p → η n on t are identical. On the basis of the ratio of the cross sections for these reactions at t = 0, i.e. R( η′ n ) t=0 = 0.55 ± 0.06 , the singlet-octet mixing angle for pseudoscalar mesons was determined to be β = −(18.2 ± 1.4)°.

A high statistics measurement of the reaction π − p → π 0 n has been performed at the Serpukhov accelerator for 15, 20, 25, 30 and 40 GeV/ c incident pion momentum using the NICE set-up with its associated 648-channel hodoscope spectrometer for γ-ray detection. More than 3 million charge-exchange events have been recorded in total. It is found that the spin-flip and non-spin-flip amplitudes can be parametrized, for small | t |, as exponentials with the same slopes to within a few percent. Also the behaviour of the differential cross section for small and medium | t | agrees with the prediction of a geometrical s -channel model which describes binary reactions in terms of a complex pole b 0 ( s ). The imaginary part of this universal pole, Im b 0 ( s ), has been determined and found to be growing logarithmically with s .
The invariant mass spectrum of neutral meson states from π − p interactions at 40 GeV/ c incident momentum has been investigated in a high statistics experiment performed at the 70 GeV IHEP accelerator. To detect the high energy photons coming from the produced neutral states, a hodoscope spectrometer with a computer on-line was used. A clear structure on the mass spectrum of dipions produced in the reaction π − p→π°π°n is observed at 2 GeV. The decay angular distributions show in this mass region the variation with mass typical of a state with a spin J = 4. The mass of the observed meson is found to be M = (2020±30)MeV and the estimate of the full width is (180±60) MeV.

New results on a high statistics measurement of pion-nucleon charge exchange scattering at 40 GeV/ c , extending in momentum transfer up to − t = 1.8 (GeV/ c ) 2 , are reported and compared with an optical impact parameter model, together with previous data for the reaction π − p → ηn at the same energy. The imaginary part of the pole trajectory b 0 ( s ) is determined from the slope of the tangent to the maxima of (−t) 1 2 d σ d t . The linear increase of Im b 0 ( s ) with log s , which has been observed at low energies, continues up to 40 GeV/ c .

A narrow meson which decays into ηη is observed in 38 GeV/ c π − p collisions at large momentum transfer. The experiment has been performed at the Serpukhov accelerator with the GAMS-2000 spectrometer. The mass of this new meson is (1755 ± 8) MeV, its width is less than 50 MeV. η′η pair production in the charge exchange reaction π−p→η′ηn has been observed and studied in a search for glueballs with the 38 GeV/c pion beam of the 70 GeV IHEP accelerator. The γ-rays from the decay η′η→4γ were detected with the hodoscope spectrometer GAMS-2000. The η′η events in the mass range from threshold up to 1.8 GeV are decays of the scalar G(1590)-meson which has been already observed in its ηη decay mode. The measured ratio of the partial widths of the G→η′η and the G → ηη decay channels is 2.7±0.8 in agreement with the value expected for glueballs.

The spin rotation sf R in pp and π + p elastic scattering at 45 GeV/c has been measured at the Seppukhov accelarator, for z . sfnc ; t |; ranging from 0.2 to 0.5 (GeV/) 2 . The results are presented, together with previous R measurements at lower energies. The equality of the values for R in proton-proton and pion-proton scattering, within the experimental errors, is a test of factorization of the residues in the pomeron exchange.

The polarization parameter P has been measured for elastic π + p, K + p and pp scattering at 45 GeV/c. Four-momentum transfer ranges from −0.08 to −1.1 (GeV/) 2 for pp, and from −0.08 to −0.9 (GeV/) 2 for π + p and K + p. The energy dependence of the polarization P ( t ) in π + p and in K + p above 6 GeV/c incident momentum is compatible with interference between pomeron and Regge poles. On the other hand, the polarization in p p elastic scattering decreases faster than ordinary Regge model predictions. This result can be explained by interference between non flip and flip amplitudes of the pomeron, leading to negative values for the polarization.

Measurements are reported of inclusivef2(1270) andf0(975) production in γp, π±p andK±p collisions at photon beam energies of 65 to 175 GeV and hadron beam energies of 80 and 140 GeV. Thef2 andf0 mesons were found at masses of 1.250 GeV and 0.961 GeV respectively. Inclusivef2 production at lowxF was found to have a similarpT dependence for each beam type, whereas an additional pion-exchange contribution was found for production by pions at highxF. Cross sections are compared with those for ρ0 production and give no indication of a non-q\(\bar q\) component in eitherf-meson state.

Inclusive production of ϕ,K*0, and\(\overline {K*^0 } \) mesons has been measured in γp, π±p andK± p collisions at beam energies of 65 GeV<Eγ<175 GeV andEπ/K =80 and 140 GeV. Cross sections have been determined over the range 0<xF<1.0 and 0<PT<1.8 GeV/c. Emphasis is put on the comparison of cross sections for different projectiles as a function ofxF so as to study the effects of common quarks between the beam particle and the detected ϕ,K*0 or\(\overline {K*^0 } \). The data are compared with a parton fusion model. Many features of the data are well explained. In detail the strange quark appears to carry a large fraction of the kaon momentum and the contribution of the valence quarks from the proton is small.

A full-kinematics measurement of the π − p→ π − p π 0 reaction in the incident π − momentum region from 295 to 450 MeV/ c is presented. The measurement was performed with the OMICRON spectrometer at the CERN synchrocyclotron.
Integrated cross section.
Result of cross section measurements for the reaction π − p → π − π + n are presented. They cover a range of incident pion momenta between 295 and 450 MeV/ c . It is the first time that the cross section has been measured so close to threshold. The experiment was performed with Omicron, a large-solid-angle spectrometer, which enables a measurement of the full set of kinematic variables. In the region of overlap there is a good agreement with other experiments. The extracted value for the chiral-symmetry-breaking parameter ξ is seen to be largely extrapolition dependent but the measured value of -0.5±0.8 leaves Weinberg's prediction of ξ =0 the only remaining choice.
