Total cross sections of π+ and π− mesons on protons and deuterons have been measured in a transmission experiment to relative accuracies of ±0.2% over the laboratory momentum range 0.46-2.67 GeV/c. The systematic error is estimated to be about ±0.5% over most of the range, increasing to about ±2% near both ends. Data have been obtained at momentum intervals of 25-50 MeV/c with a momentum resolution of ±0.6%. No new structure is observed in the π±p total cross sections, but results differ in several details from previous experiments. From 1-2 GeV/c, where systematic erros are the smallest, the total cross section of π− mesons on deuterons is found to be consistently higher than that of π+ mesons by (1.3±0.3)%; about half of this difference may be understood in terms of Coulomb-barrier effects. The πd and πN total cross sections are used to check the validity of the Glauber theory. Substantial disagreements (up to 2 mb) are observed, and the conclusion is drawn that the Glauber theory is inadequate in this momentum range.

Inclusive and semi-inclusive cross sections for gp0 production in 100, 200, and 360 GeV/c π−p interactions are presented. Differential cross sections for ρ0 production as functions of c.m. rapidity and transverse momentum are compared with the corresponding differential cross sections for pion production. Effects of various methods of estimating background on the values obtained for ρ0 production cross sections are discussed. About 10% of the final-state charged pions appear to come from ρ0 decay. Thus, while ρ0 production and decay is a significant source of final-state pions, other sources must contribute the majority of the produced pions.

Charged- and neutral-particle production from 400-GeV/c pp collisions are measured simultaneously using the Fermilab 15-ft bubble chamber. The π0 and K0 cross sections are rising at Fermilab energies, while the Λ0 cross section remains fairly constant. Similarly, the average number of π0's and K0's increases as a function of the number of negative particles in an event, yet no such dependence is noted for the Λ0's. The ratio of average number of π0 to average number of π− per inelastic collisions is found to be constant at Serpukhov and Fermilab energies (40 to 400 GeV/c) and equal to 1.22±0.02. Cross sections for Σ0 and Σ¯0 production are measured and limits are found for η0 and ω0 production. Neutral- and charged-pion correlations are compared with five pion-production models.

J/ ψ production at 40 GeV/ c by π ± , K ± , p and p incident on hydrogen has been studied and results compared with those obtained on tungsten in the same experiment. On hydrogen, J/ψ cross-section ratios relative to π − have been measured to be (for x F > 0) σ(π − ) : σ(π + ) : σ( p ) : σ( p ) = 1 : (0.78 ± 0.09) : (0.83 ± 0.35) : (0.07 ± 0.04) . The suppression of the proton induced cross sections shows the importance of calence quark-antiquark fusiin J/ψ production at this energy (i.e. M J 2 / ψ / s =0.13).

Using the ARGUS detector at DORIS, we have observed the production of F ± mesons in e + e − annihilation at a centre of mass energy of 10 GeV through their subsequent decays into φπ ± and φπ + π − π ± . The values obtained for [ R (e + e − →FX). Branching Ratio] are (1.47 ± 0.32 ± 0.20)% and (1.63 ± 0.42 ± 0.41)% respectively. The observed mass is (1973.6 ± 2.6 ± 3.0) MeV c 2 . The F momentum spectrum is as expected for the fragmentation of c quarks into charmed mesons, but is somewhat softer than for fragmentation into D ∗ mesons. The relevant angular distributions are consistent with a spin-zero assignment of the F meson.

Results are presented on the charge exchange reaction\(\bar pp \to \bar nn\) and\(\bar np\) annihilations from bubble chamber exposures to antiproton beam of momenta 700 and 760 MeV/c. The differential cross section of\(\bar pp \to \bar nn\) shows a forward spike followed by a clear dip bump structure. Total annihilation cross section of\(\bar np\) for average\(\bar n\) momentum of 700 MeV/c has been evaluated to be 55.4±2.2 mb. The multiplicity, Feynmanx andpT2 distributions for inclusive charged pions in\(\bar pp\) and\(\bar np\) annihilations are found to be similar. The emission of charged pions from\(\bar np\) annihilations are found to be consistent with thermodynamic models with temperature ∼110 MeV.

The production of antideuterons has been observed in electron-positron annihilations at center-of-mass energies around 10 GeV. Antideuterons have been identified unambiguously by their energy loss in the drift chamber, their time-of-flight and the pattern of their energy deposition in the shower counters of the ARGUS detector. The production rate in the momentum range (0.6−1.8) GeV/ c is (1.6 −0.7 +1.0 ) × 10 −5 per hadronic event.

Using the ARGUS detector at the DORIS II e+e− storage ring at DESY, we have obtained evidence for a new charmed resonance which decays into D*±(2010)π∓. Results on hyperon production are reported for data accumulated at 10 GeV centre-of-mass energy with the ARGUS detector. Signals for both the octet states Λ, Σ 0 and Ξ − and the decuplet states Σ ± (1385), Ξ 0 (1530) and Ω − are observed 1 (references to a specific state are to be interpreted as also implying the charge conjugate state), some for the first time in e + e − annihilation. Baryon rates from γ dir (1S) decays are enhanced by a factor of about 3 over the continuum.

The production cross sections for the Λ, Σ0, Ξ−, Σ0 (1385), Ξ0 (1530) and Ω− hyperons have been measured, both in the continuum and in direct ϒ decays. Baryon rates in direct ϒ decays are enhanced by a factor of 2.5 or more compared to the continuum. Such a large baryon enhancement cannot be explained by standard fragmentation models. The strangeness suppression for baryons and mesons turns out to be the same. A strong suppression of spin 3/2 states is observed.

Using the ARGUS detector at DORIS, we observe the production of D ∗+ s mesons in e + e − annihilation through their subsequent decays to a D + s and a photon. Photons which convert in the beam pipe or drift chamber inner wall are used to obtain a high precision measurement of the D ∗+ s -D + s mass difference, while photons detected in the shower counters are used to determine the production cross section, and to provide an independent measurement of the D ∗+ s -D + s mass difference. The observed D ∗+ s - D + s mass difference is 142.5±0.8±1.5 MeV/ c 2 , and σ(e + e − →D ∗+ s X)·BR(D ∗+ s →D + s γ)(·BR(D + s →φπ + ) is 4.4±1.1±1.0 pb at 10.2 GeV. The width of the D ∗+ s is less than 4.5 MeV/ c 2 at 90% confidence level.

Using the ARGUS detector at the DORIS II storage ring at DESY, we have observed a charmed meson of mass (2455±3±5) MeV/c2, decaying to D + π − . The natural width of this state is determined to be (15 +13+5 −10−10 ) MeV c 2 . The fragmentation function is hard, as expected for a leading charmed particle from nonresonant e + e − annihilation. Using the ARGUS detector at the DORIS II e + e - storage ring at DESY, we have observed a new charmed meson of mass (2469±4±6) MeV/ c 2 , decaying to D 0 π + . Using data collected with the ARGUS detector, we have performed a decay angular analysis of the enhancement, previously known as the D ∗ (2420), seen in the final state D ∗ (2010) + π − . We thereby exhibit that the observed broad structure is actually due to two relatively narrow resonances, one of which is identified as the D ∗ (2459) 0 , while the massof the other is measured to be (2414±2±5) MeV/ c 2 . The results of the analysis are in good agreement with the interpretation of the two states as L =1 D mesons of spin-parities 2 + and 1 + respectively.

The Fermilab 15-ft bubble chamber has been exposed to a quadrupole triplet neutrino beam produced at the Tevatron. The ratio of ν to ν¯ in the beam is approximately 2.5. The mean event energy for ν-induced charged-current events is 150 GeV, and for ν¯-induced charged-current events it is 110 GeV. A total of 64 dimuon candidates (1 μ+μ+, 52 μ−μ+ and μ+μ−, and 11 μ−μ−) is observed in the data sample of approximately 13 300 charged-current events. The number and properties of the μ−μ− and μ+μ+ candidates are consistent with their being produced by background processes, the important sources being π and K decay and punchthrough. The 90%-C.L. upper limit for μ−μ−/μ− for muon momenta above 4 GeV/c is 1.2×10−3, and for momenta above 9 GeV/c this limit is 1.1×10−3. The opposite-sign-dimuon–to–single-muon ratio is (0.62±0.13)% for muon momenta above 4 GeV/c. There are eight neutral strange particles in the opposite-sign sample, leading to a rate per dimuon event of 0.65±0.29. The opposite-sign-dimuon sample is consistent with the hypothesis of charm production and decay.

The properties of final state photons in multihadronic decays of theZ0 and those of the recoiling hadronic system are discussed and compared with theoretical expectations. The yield of two and three jet events with final state photons is found to be in good agreement with the expectation from a matrix element calculation ofO(ααs. Uncertainties in the interpretation of the theoretical calculation do not yet permit a final assessment of events with just one reconstructed jet. Comparing the rates of two jet events with a photon to those of three jet events in the inclusive multihadronic sample, the strong coupling constant in second order is determined asαs\((M_{Z^0 } )\)=0.122±0.010, taking into account only the statistical and experimental systematic errors. It is found that an abelian model of the strong interaction does not describe the data. The comparison of the total yield and the jet rates with QCD shower programs shows better agreement with the ARIADNE model than with the JETSET model. Both programs are found to describe well the photon properties and the properties of the residual hadronic event.

We report a study of electron proton collisions at very low Q 2 , corresponding to virtual photoproduction at centre of mass energies in the range 100–295 GeV. The distribution in transverse energy of the observed hadrons is much harder than can be explained by soft processes. A subset of the two-jet events have energy in the electron direction consistent with that expected from the photon remnant in resolved photon processes.

If the baryon number of a Λ is compensated by a Λ , the Λ is found with a probability of 53% in an interval of ±0.6 around the Λ rapidity. This correlation strength is weaker than predicted by the Herwig Monte Carlo and the Jetset Monte Carlo with a production chain of baryon-antibaryon, and stronger than predicted by the UCLA model. The observed rapidity correlations can be described by the Jetset Monte Carlo with a dominant production chain of baryon-meson-antibaryon, the popcorn mechanism. In addition to the short range correlations, one finds an indication of a correlation of Λ Λ pairs in opposite hemispheres if both the Λ and the Λ have large rapidities. Such long range correlations are expected if the primary quark flavours are compensated in opposite hemispheres and if these quarks are found in energetic baryons. Rates for simultaneous baryon and strangeness number compensation for Λ Λ , Ξ − Ξ + and Ξ − Λ ( Λ + Λ ) are measured and compared with different Monte Carlo models.

This paper reports a search for excited electrons at the HERA electron-proton collider. In a sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 26 nb − , no evidence was found for any resonant state decaying into e − γ , ν W − or e − Z 0 . Limits on the coupling strength of an excited electron have been determined for masses between 45 and 225 GeV. This study also reports the observation of the wide-angle e γ Compton scattering process.
