We have measured large-transverse-momentum (p⊥) inclusive π0 production at c.m. angles centered near 90° for π±p and pp interactions at 100 and 200 GeV/c. This is the first such measurement using a pion beam. The ratio σ(pp→π0X)σ(πp→π0X) decreases with increasing p⊥ and is independent of energy when expressed as a function of x⊥=p⊥pmax. The reactions π+p→Σ+(1385)K+ and π+p→Σ+(1385)K*+(890) are examined. The Σ+(1385)K+ differential cross section for −t′<0.5 GeV2 and spin density matrix elements agree with a Regge-pole model incorporating (nondegenerate) vector and tensor K* exchange with dominant M1 coupling. The Σ+(1385)K*+(890) density matrix elements are consistent with the quark-additivity predictions. A Y*+ at a mass of 1700 MeV is also observed in the Λπ+ mass distribution, produced opposite both K+ and K*+(890).

The experiment made use of the proportional hybrid spectrometer system. Results are based on 995 K S 0 , 485 Λ, and 83 Λ found in a sample of 132 000 pictures. Cross sections are given for inclusive production of these particles by each of the three beam particles, and comparisons are made with measurements at other energies. Topological cross sections are also calculated, and KNO multiplicity scaling is investigated. Distributions are presented of invariant cross sections as functions of the Feynman scaling variable x and c.m. rapidity y . We have studied the inclusive production of K*±(890) and Y*±(1385) in pp, π+p, and K+p interactions at 147 GeV/c. The experiment used the Fermilab 30-inch hydrogen bubble chamber with the hybrid spectrometer system. Results are based on a sample of 1916 observed KS and 932 observed A. Inclusive cross sections are given for K*± and Y*± production from the three beams, and comparisons are made with experiments at other energies. Feynman-x and transverse-momentum-squared distributions are also calculated. The results suggest that the K*− is entirely produced in the central region, while the K*+ includes a component from beam fragmentation. Comparisons are made with the additive quark model.

Measurements of the polarization parameters and angular distributions are reported for π±p elastic scattering at 100 GeV/c and for pp elastic scattering at 100- and 300-GeV/c incident momentum. The π±p data cover the kinematic range 0.18≤−t≤1.10 GeV2 and are in agreement with current Regge-model predictions. The pp data cover the kinematic range 0.15≤−t≤1.10 GeV2 and 0.15≤−t≤2.00 GeV2 at 100 and 300 GeV/c, respectively, and are found to be consistent with absorption-model predictions.
We have performed a high-statistics experiment on the reaction π−p→K+K¯0π−n at 8.0 GeV/c. A Dalitz-plot analysis of the K+K¯0π− system finds that the D(1285) is a JPG=1++ state coupling predominantly to a δπ decay channel, while the E(1420) peak consists mostly of a JPG=0−+ wave with a substantial δπ decay mode. There is little evidence of a 1++ resonance at the E mass.
The differential cross section of π+p elastic scattering has been measured in two high-statistics bubble-chamber exposures at laboratory beam momenta of 3.7 and 7.1 GeV/c. A new feature suggested by these data is a dip in dσdu at −u≃3 GeV2. This dip corresponds well to the third zero of J0(b−u′), where ℏcb=1 fm. The effective u-channel Regge trajectory computed for these two energies has a slope of 0.22 ± 0.26.
Data on inclusive jet production in the transverse-momentum (p⊥) range 0-8 GeV/c for 200-GeV/c p, π−, π+, K−, K+, and p¯ incident on a hydrogen target are presented. A determination of branching ratios for D meson decays into all charged particle final states is reported. The values obtained: (D ± → K ∓ π ± π ± /all D ± ) = (14 ± 6)% and ( D 0 /D 0 → K ± π ∓ π + π − /all D 0 /D 0 ) = (10 ± 4)%, are higher than those currently accepted. This result, if confirmed, implies a corresponding reduction in the accepted values for some total cross section measurements. The results presented in this paper were obtained from a 105 000 frame exposure of the FNAL Hybrid Proportional Wire Chamber-30 inch Bubble Chamber System, in a tagged beam of 147 GeV/ c negative particles. Elastic, total and topological cross sections were obtained for both π − p and K − p interactions. Comparisons with other data, taken with various beam particles over large momentum intervals, show good agreement with KNO scaling, and similarity in the scaling behavior of σ n for the different beam particles.

We present data on inclusive and semi-inclusive ϱ 0 production in 147 GeV/ c π − p interactions. We find a total cross section of 7.3 ± 1.3 mb. Most of this cross section is found in the lower topology events (⩽ 10 prongs), and in the central and forward rapidity regions. The P T 2 dependence of ϱ 0 production, 〈: n > ϱ 0 per event, and the ϱ 0 / π + ratios are also discussed.

Differential cross-sections for negative pion radiative capture on protons at c.m. angles of 60°, 90°, and 120° have been measured at nine incident laboratory energies between 110 and 270 MeV. An experiment using the Fermilab Single Arm Spectrometer (SAS) facility and an associated nonmagnetic vertex detector studied the reactions a+p→c+X, where a and c were π±, K±, p, or p¯. Extensive measurements were made at 100 and 175 GeV/c beam momenta with the outgoing hadrons detected in the SAS covering a kinematic range 0.12<x<1.0 and pT<1.25 GeV/c. Additional data covering a more restricted range in x were also gathered at 70 GeV/c incident momentum. In this high-statistics experiment, the identification of both the incoming and outgoing charged hadrons were made with a total of eight Čerenkov counters. New and extensive single-particle inclusive data for charged-particle production in low-pT hadronic fragmentation are presented. The average associated charged-particle multiplicity and pseudorapidity distributions are also given.

The NA24 experiment at CERN investigated inclusive γγ, π0π0, and γπ0 final states in the mass range between 4 and 9 GeV/c2 produced in π−p, π+p, and pp reactions at a c.m.-system energy s=23.7 GeV. The π0π0 cross sections agree well with expectations of the quark-parton model. For γπ0 production in π−p and pp reactions, a clear signal is observed and cross sections are shown. The production of γγ events was observed with a statistical significance of 2.9σ in π−p reactions. The cross section is in agreement with a higher-order QCD prediction.

We report on a measurement of the missing-mass, (mm)−, spectrum from the reaction π−+p→(mm)−+p at 8 GeV. The data contain 6500 events in the R peak (M2=2.72±0.02 GeV2, Γ=139±31 MeV). The R shape is consistent with either a single Breit-Wigner or several wide resonances, as suggested by bubble-chamber experiments, but inconsistent with the series of narrow resonances reported by the CERN missing-mass group.

A search for production of D*−'s using the decay chain D0π−, D0→K+π−, was carried out at the Brookhaven National Laboratory multiparticle spectrometer with a 16-GeV/c π− beam and a hydrogen target. At 95% confidence level the upper limits for the product of peripheral production cross section by branching ratio are 2.4 nb for inclusive D*− production and 1.3 nb for the exclusive channel π−p→D*−Λc.

We have studied backward meson and baryon production in π−p→nπ+π− at 8 GeV/c using a streamer chamber triggered by the detection of the interaction of the neutron in thick-plate optical spark chambers. Our data sample of 866 events is dominated by the quasi-two-body final states Δ−(1232)π+, nρ0, and nf0. We study the differential and total backward cross sections for these states and the decay angular distributions of the resonances. The results for the Δ− and ρ0 indicate that both nucleon and Δ exchange in the u channel are important in their production, while f0 production is, as expected, consistent with nucleon exchange.

Inclusive production of direct soft photons is studied inK+p andK+π interactions at 250 GeV/c. Total cross sections, Feynman-x and transverse momentum distributions of direct γ's are presented. The measured cross sections are several times larger than expected from QED inner bremsstrahlung, indicating the presence of an anomalous soft photon source. The model of Lichard and Van Hove, based on the “cold quark-gluon plasma” picture, agrees with the data.

Quasi-elastic scattering with central dipion cluster production is studied in π+p andK+p interactions at 250 GeV/c. The cross section of double pomeron exchange is obtained as σDPE(π+p →π+(π+π−)p)=24 ±5 µb and σDPE(K+p→K+(π+π−)p)=19 ±5 µb. In an experiment with the 30-inch Hybrid Spectrometer at Fermilab we have obtained the inclusive and semi-inclusive production cross sections of the ϱ0 meson using a conventional background subtraction technique. Production cross sections for the ϱ0 are derived as a function of the Feynman scaling variablex, and the transverse variablespt2 andEt=(pt2+M2)1/2. The longitudinal distributions are compared with the (1−x) dependence of the proton and meson valence quark structure functions, using various forms of recombination and fragmentation models. The transverse distributions are compared with thermodynamic models. We give density matrix elements for the ϱ0 production from pions in the extreme forward region.
