The differential cross section and recoil-proton polarization in π−−p elastic scattering at 310-MeV incident-pion energy has been measured. The differential cross section was measured at 28 angles in the angular region 25<~θlab<~160 deg. The fractional rms errors were typically 3%. The reaction was observed by counting the scattered pions emerging from a liquid-hydrogen target with a counter telescope consisting of scintillation and Čerenkov counters. Simultaneously, the recoil-proton polarization was measured at four angles in the angular region 114<θc.m.<146 deg. The recoil protons from the liquid-hydrogen target were scattered from a carbon target and the left-right asymmetry was measured. Scintillation counters were used throughout to detect the particles.

We measured elastic-scattering angular distributions for π++p scattering at 1.5, 2.0, and 2.5 BeV/c using spark chambers to detect scattered pions and protons. A bump that decreases in amplitude with increasing momentum is observed in the backward hemisphere in the 1.5- and 2.0-BeV/c distributions, but is not observed in the 2.5-BeV/c distributions. It appears reasonable to attribute this phenomenon to the 1.45-BeV/c resonance observed in the π++p total cross section. The data are compared with π−+p data and are found to support the theoretical prediction that the scattering cross sections for both charge states should become equal at high energies. We fit the angular distributions with a power series in cosθ*, and compare the extrapolated values for the scattering cross section in the backward direction with the calculation of the neutron-exchange pole contribution to the cross section. The "elementary" neutron-pole term contribution is calculated to be 90 mb/sr at 2.0 BeV/c, in violent disagreement with the extrapolated value, ≈0.5 mb/sr.

The interactions of 604 MeV π− mesons in a hydrogen bubble chamber have been systematically analyzed. In 33 000 pictures a total of 8052 usable events were found, corresponding to cross sections of 18.9±1.3 mb for σ(elastic), 4.98±0.54 mb for σ(π−pπ0), 7.87±0.91 mb for σ(π−nπ+), 14.0±1.0 mb for σ(neutrals), with σ(two−pionproduction)<0.2 mb, for a total cross section of 45.9±1.9 mb at this energy. The angular distribution for elastic scattering was fitted with a fifth-order polynomial in cosθ which gave a value of dσdΩ(0°) consistent with dispersion theory. The pion-pion effective-mass distributions for both single-pion-production channels showed pronounced peaking at high mass values, strongly inconsistent with simple isobar-production kinematics. Simple one-pion exchange does not appear to play a significant role.

The interactions of 775 MeV (kinetic energy) π−-mesons in a hydrogen bubble chamber have been studied. Total and partial crosssections have been determined with the following results: σ (total) = (39.0±1.6) mb, σ (elastic)=(14.8±0.7) mb, σ (π− + p → all neutrals) = (9.0 ± 0.5) mb, σ (π− + p = π− + π+ + n) = (9.8 ± 0.5) mb, and σ (π− + p = π− + p + π0) = (4.8 ± 0.3) mb. The elastic-scattering angular distribution has been fitted with a Legendre polynomial series terminated at the fifth order. Various angular and effective-mass distributions of single-π production are presented and discussed in terms of the Olsson-Yodh and O.P.E. models.

Differential cross sections for elastic π±−p scattering have been measured at lab momenta of 8 and 12 GeV/c in a momentum-transfer region corresponding to 1.2≤−t≤6 (GeV/c)2. Also, differential cross sections near 180° were measured for 4 and 8 GeV/c pions. At momentum transfers greater than −t=2 (GeV/c)2, the π−p cross sections drop much faster with increasing angle than the corresponding p−p cross sections. Also, in the region −t≃1.3 (GeV/c)2, there is structure in the π−p angular distribution but not in the p−p angular distribution. At −t≃3 (GeV/c)2, the drop in cross section appears to stop and from then on the angular distribution is consistent with isotropy. But in the angular region 170° to 180°, the cross sections have become much larger, and sharp backward peaks are observed. Information is given on the energy and charge dependences and widths of these backward peaks.

The reactions π−p→π−p and π−p→π−π0p for 1.7 GeV/c incident π− have been studied, in 3094 and 2244 interactions respectively, identified from 10 106 two-prong events measured in film exposed at the BNL 20 in. hydrogen bubble chamber. The differential elastic-scattering cross-section is found to show a first and second diffraction peak and a first diffraction minimum with indications of a second minimum and onset of a third maximum. The experimental curve has been fitted by a black-dise optical-model formula with radius (0.80±0.03) fm and by a differential cross-section computed from the Dirac equation depending on two ranges, 0.7 fm attractive imaginary and 0.4 fm repulsive. The dominant mode (∼40%) of the π−π0p production is through the two-body channel, π−p→ϱ−p. We find the following cross-sections: σ(π−p→π−p mb, σ(π−p→π−p mb. The differential rhomeson production cross-section shows a diffraction peak having a dependence (dσ/dt)(π−p→ϱ−p)=[(2.5±0.2) exp [(−5.3±0.5)t]] mb/(GeV/c)2, wheret is the squared four0momentum transfer between incoming and outgoing proton in (GeV/c)2, and a second diffraction maximum. It has been fitted by an optical-model formula for a bright ring of radius 0.80 fm and ring thickness 0.25 fm. The cross-section for σ(π−p→π−p was found to be (0.36±0.04) mb. From the inelastic data the Chew-Low dipion scattering cross-section has been computed, using various form factors. A form factor of unity is found to be acceptable.

Total cross sections of π+ and π− mesons on protons and deuterons have been measured in a transmission experiment to relative accuracies of ±0.2% over the laboratory momentum range 0.46-2.67 GeV/c. The systematic error is estimated to be about ±0.5% over most of the range, increasing to about ±2% near both ends. Data have been obtained at momentum intervals of 25-50 MeV/c with a momentum resolution of ±0.6%. No new structure is observed in the π±p total cross sections, but results differ in several details from previous experiments. From 1-2 GeV/c, where systematic erros are the smallest, the total cross section of π− mesons on deuterons is found to be consistently higher than that of π+ mesons by (1.3±0.3)%; about half of this difference may be understood in terms of Coulomb-barrier effects. The πd and πN total cross sections are used to check the validity of the Glauber theory. Substantial disagreements (up to 2 mb) are observed, and the conclusion is drawn that the Glauber theory is inadequate in this momentum range.

The elastic scattering of negative pions on protons at 2.26 GeVc has been studied using the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory 72-in. hydrogen-filled bubble chamber. The elastic scattering cross section is found to be 8.91±0.24 mb. The forward diffraction peak is well fitted by an exponential in the square of the four-momentum transfer, and the slope is found to be 8.8±0.1 GeV−2. The differential cross section is parametrized in terms of three models: optical, strong-absorption, and two-slope. It is found that the two-slope model affords the best description of the data and also does very well in predicting the polarization data of other experiments. The best-fit parameters for all three models are given. In addition, the amplitudes associated with the best fits are given for the strong-absorption and the two-slope models.

We present an analysis of ππN final states obtained from π−p interactions at 2.26 GeV/c. Strong ρ production is present in both final states. In addition, significant nucleon isobar production is observed. We observed the following cross sections: σ(π−π0p)=3.77±0.13 mb, σ(π−π+n)=5.67±0.17 mb, σ(ρ−p)=2.19±0.09 mb, σ(Δ+(1236)π−)=0.30±0.10 mb, σ(N0(1650)π0)=0.49±0.07 mb, σ(ρ0n)=2.89±0.11 mb, σ(Δ−(1236)π+)=0.11±0.06 mb, σ(N+(1470)π−)=0.24±0.06 mb, and σ(N+(1650)π−)=0.45±0.05 mb. The spin-density matrix elements are determined for the ρ0 by interpreting the ρ0 asymmetry as an interference between the resonant P wave and a T=0 S wave. A search for the ε0 in the π+π−n final state failed to yield a direct observation of this effect.

We present results of an experiment to measure the differential cross section of the reaction π−p→π0n between the forward and backward peaks. The measurements were made at incident π− momenta of 3.67 and 4.83 GeVc. The t range 1.7<~|t|<~4.9 (GeVc)2 was covered at the lower momentum and 1.8<~|t|<~7 (GeVc)2 at the higher momentum. At the lower momentum the cross section is essentially constant between |t|=2.4 and 4.8 (GeVc)2 while at the higher momentum the angular distribution exhibits a broad minimum centered at |t|=4.4 (GeVc)2.

Final results for 3678 six-prong π+p events at 8 GeV/c are presented. Single-particle distributions are compared with the predictions of the Chan-Loskiewicz-Allison model and the phenomenological model of the F(t) function. Differences between the transverse momenta of the π+ and π− and between the transverse momenta of secondaries emitted forward and backward in the c.m. system are observed. Cross sections for production of the ρ0, ρ+, ρ−, η, ω0, X0, and D0 mesons and the N33*++ and N33*− isobars are given, together with upper limits for some other resonances. The D0 meson is observed in the seven-body channel in the ηπ+π− system, with some evidence for the cascade decay D0→δ±π∓→ηπ+π−. The branching ratio (f0→2π+2π−)(f0→2π) is determined to be (2.2−2.2+4.5)%. Upper limits for the decay of A mesons into X0π systems are quoted. The cross section for the two-body reaction π+p→N33*++X0 is determined to be 30 ± 13 μb, from which the η0−X0 mixing angle is derived. Associated production of N33*++ and ρ0 in the six-body channel and of N33*++, ρ0, and ω0 in the seven-body channel is studied, and the cross sections for reactions involving simultaneous production of these resonances are estimated. The Goldhaber-Goldhaber-Lee-Pais effect is studied and shown to be strong in the six-body channel, especially for selected events with low energy of the pion system.

Measurements of the differential cross section for the reactions π+p→K+Σ+ and π+p→K+Y*+(1385) are reported at 3.5, 3.75, 4.0, 4.25, 4.5, 4.75, 5.0, 6.0, 10.0, and 14.0 GeV/c. Polarization in π+p→K+Σ+ is also reported at 6.0, 10.0, and 14.0 GeV/c. At small |t|, the cross section for π+p→K+Σ+ is well described by an exponential Aebt with slopes in the range b≈8−10 (GeV/c)−2; for |t|>0.5 (GeV/c)2 this slope decreases considerably. The cross section for π+p→K+Y*+(1385) is well described for |t|>0.2 (GeV/c)2 by a single exponential of slope about half that for π+p→K+Σ+; there is no break near |t|>0.5 (GeV/c)2. We observe a dip in this cross section near t=0. The polarization in π+p→K+Σ+ is consistent with zero for |t|<0.4 (GeV/c)2 and becomes large and positive for larger |t|.

We report on a measurement of the missing-mass, (mm)−, spectrum from the reaction π−+p→(mm)−+p at 8 GeV. The data contain 6500 events in the R peak (M2=2.72±0.02 GeV2, Γ=139±31 MeV). The R shape is consistent with either a single Breit-Wigner or several wide resonances, as suggested by bubble-chamber experiments, but inconsistent with the series of narrow resonances reported by the CERN missing-mass group.

It is found in the reactions π ± p →( π ± π + π − )p, believed to be dominated by diffraction dissociation, that the d σ d t′ distributions show a “cross-over” effect at t ′ ≈ 0.15, similar to the effect observed in elastic scattering. This gives evidence for the interference of ( ϱ 0 , B 0 ,…)-exchanges with ( P , f 0 , …) -exchanges in pion diffraction dissociation reactions. No such evidence is found for baryon dissociation, π ± p → π ± (p π + π − ), at the same energy.

Particular attention was paid to the relative particle-antiparticle normalization. The crossover points are consistent with no energy dependence, average values being 0.14 ± 0.03, 1.190 ± 0.005, and 0.160 ± 0.007 GeV2 for π's, K's, and protons, respectively.
The differential cross section for π−−p elastic scattering has been measured at 13.8 and 22.6 GeV/c up to −t=5 (GeV/c)2. The −t=2.8 (GeV/c)2 dip is still observed at 13.8 GeV/c, but at 22.6 GeV/c it has become a sharp kink in the angular distribution. Cross sections for resonance production in the reactions π ± p → p π ± π + π − at 16 GeV/ c are determined by a maximum likelihood fit, making use of the measurements of all individual events. The reactions are described by a simple parametrization based on an incoherent superposition of amplitudes for quasi two-body and quasi three-body processes and a non-resonant backgroud. In this way the reflections are accounted for in a consistent way. Thus cross sections are obtained for Δ ++ , Δ 0 , ρ 0 and f 0 production which do not suffer from the uncertainties of background subtraction typical of the usual technique of fitting individual mass distributions.

The reaction π-p→pωπ- has been studied at 9.1 GeV/c, its total cross-section is σ=(123±22) μb. The pB− and the quasi-three-body channels contribute with cross-section of σ=(24±7) μb and σ=(94±23) μb, respectively. The main features of the quasi-three-body pωπ- channel, displayed by some techniques of data presentation, are satisfactorily described by a double-Regge-pole model. In this model pomeron-meson and meson-meson exchanges are taken into account. An OPE modelà la Veneziano predicts a total cross-section too high and reproduces very poorly the observed features.

Results are presented of a wire-spark-chamber spectrometer measurement of the differential cross section for π−p elastic scattering at 14.15 GeV/c. The region covered in the square of the four-momentum transfer, t, is 0.01<−t<0.78 (GeV/c)2. The cross section is found to obey very nearly a simple exponential t dependence with no evidence of structure. A fit to the data of the form dσdt∝exp(bt+ct2) on the range 0.05<−t<0.78 (GeV/c)2 (i.e., above the region affected by Coulomb scattering) yields b=8.26±0.10 (GeV/c)2 and c=1.01±0.17 (GeV/c)−4. Considering the results of previous measurements, b≃11 (GeV/c)−2 for −t<0.05 (GeV/c)2, a deviation from the simple exponential near −t≃0.05 (GeV/c)2 is indicated.

Invariant single-particle cross sections for pion and proton production in π ± p interactions at 8 and 16 GeV/ c are presented in terms of integrated distributions as functions of x , reduced rapidity ζ and p ⊥ 2 , and also in terms of double differential cross sections E d 2 σ /(d x d p ⊥ 2 ) and d ζ d p ⊥ 2 ). A comparison of π ± and π − induced reactions is made and the energy dependence is discussed. It is shown that the single-particle structure function cannot be factorized in its dependece on transverse and longitudinal momentum. Measurements of π±p, K±p, pp, and p¯p elastic scattering are presented for incident momenta of 3, 3.65, 5, and 6 GeVc and momentum transfers typically 0.03 to 1.8 GeV2. The angle and momentum of the scattered particle were measured with the Argonne Effective Mass Spectrometer for 300 000 events, yielding 930 cross-section values with an uncertainty in absolute normalization of ±4%. Only the K+ and proton data show any significant change in slope of the forward diffraction peak with incident momentum. The particle-antiparticle crossover positions are consistent with no energy dependence, average values being 0.14 ± 0.03, 0.190 ± 0.006, and 0.162 ± 0.004 GeV2 for π' s, K' s, and protons, respectively; these errors reflect both statistics and the ±1.5% uncertainty in particle-antiparticle relative normalization. Differences between particle and antiparticle cross sections isolate interference terms between amplitudes of opposite C parity in the t channel; these differences indicate that the imaginary part of the odd-C nonflip-helicity amplitude has a J0(r(−t)12) structure for −t<0.8 GeV2, as predicted by strong absorption models. The cross-section differences for K± and proton-antiproton are in qualitative agreement with the predictions of ω universality, the agreement improving with increasing energy. The corresponding quark-model predictions relating the π± and K± differences failed by more than a factor of 2. We have combined our π± cross sections with other data to better determine the πN amplitudes in a model-independent way; results of this analysis are presented.

Differential cross sections for π−p elastic scattering over the angular range 155° to 177° in the center-of-mass system have been measured at 33 incident pion momenta in the range 600 to 1280 MeV/c. The data from this experiment are compared to all other published data in this momentum region. The over-all agreement is good. The data of this experiment are also compared with the results of the recent phase-shift analysis by Almehed and Lovelace. In the momentum region between 700 and 900 MeV/c, the slope of the backward angular distribution goes rapidly through zero from negative to positive, and the magnitude of the differential cross section falls by more than a factor of 10. Momentum-dependent structure is seen in the extrapolated differential cross sections at 180°. Two prominent dips in the 180° differential cross sections appear at 880 and 1150 MeV/c. This structure is discussed in terms of a direct-channel resonance model that assumes only resonant partial waves are contributing to the cross sections for large scattering angles.

Cross sections and density-matrix elements for π−p→ϕn have been measured for - −t≲1.5 GeV2 at 3, 4, 5, and 6 GeV/c, using the Argonne effective-mass spectrometer to observe the decay ϕ(1019)→K+K−. This is the first observation of the reaction in this energy range. The remarkably flat differential cross section at 4 GeV/c and the strong energy dependence suggest a production mechanism not normally seen at these energies. Data on K−p→ϕΛ and K−p→ϕΣ0 from the same experiment are also presented.

Data from p+p→p+X at 102, 205, and 405 GeV and from π−+p→p+X at 205 GeV exhibit an approximate scaling property in the charged-prong multiplicity distributions as a function of the missing mass for the range 5<~MX<~13 GeV.

In a 48 000-picture exposure of the Fermilab 30-inch hydrogen bubble chamber to a 205 GeV/ c π − beam, we have measured 169 events of the reaction, π − p → π − π + π − p, with a cross section of 635 ± 61 μ b. This reaction proceeds almost entirely via low mass π − → 3 π and p → p ππ dissociation. Factorization is satisfied for p → pππ dissociation in πp and pp interactions.

PARTICLE-ANTIPARTICLE CROSS SECTION DIFFERENCES - SOME COMMON ERRORS CANCEL.
The differential cross section d σ d t′ for the charge-exchange process π + p → π 0 ( π + p) at 8, 16 and 23 GeV/ c is presented for several regions of the π + p effective mass. It is found that the dip at t ′ ≈ 0.6 (GeV/ c ) 2 which is observed in the Δ(1236) mass band becomes a less pronounced structure in the higher mass regions. However, while the slope of the d σ d t′ distributions in the near-forward direction decreases strongly with increasing π + p mass, there is no evidence that the observed structure moves to higher values of t ′ as the π + p mass increases. These results are consistent with a Regge-exchange picture where the position of the dip is determined by the exchanged trajectory, but are inconsistent with a simple geometrical picture.
