The reaction π − p → φφ n has been isolated at 16 GeV/ c and its cross section determined to be 40 ± 10 nb. The φφ mass spectrum shows a threshold enhancement between 2.1 and 2.5 GeV. A successful description of the angular content of the φφ system requires two interferingss J P = 2 + states.

SLOPE OF DIFFERENTIAL TP(P=3,P=2) DISTRIBUTION.
Experimental results on the reaction π − p → K ∗0 (890) X 0 at 10 GeV /c are presented. By using the K ∗0 polarization measurements, a detailed study of the production has been carried out as a function of the missing mass squared and of the four-momentum trasnfer squared to the K ∗0 . We found that: (a) K ∗0 production is dominated by natural parity exchange; (b) K ∗0 helicity-zero production dominates the unnatural parity exchange contribution and (c) the main features of the reaction are in agreement with the predictions of the finite mass sum rules.

We have performed the most comprehensive resonance-model fit of $\pi^-\pi^-\pi^+$ states using the results of our previously published partial-wave analysis (PWA) of a large data set of diffractive-dissociation events from the reaction $\pi^- + p \to \pi^-\pi^-\pi^+ + p_\text{recoil}$ with a 190 GeV/$c$ pion beam. The PWA results, which were obtained in 100 bins of three-pion mass, $0.5 < m_{3\pi} < 2.5$ GeV/$c^2$, and simultaneously in 11 bins of the reduced four-momentum transfer squared, $0.1 < t' < 1.0$ $($GeV$/c)^2$, are subjected to a resonance-model fit using Breit-Wigner amplitudes to simultaneously describe a subset of 14 selected waves using 11 isovector light-meson states with $J^{PC} = 0^{-+}$, $1^{++}$, $2^{++}$, $2^{-+}$, $4^{++}$, and spin-exotic $1^{-+}$ quantum numbers. The model contains the well-known resonances $\pi(1800)$, $a_1(1260)$, $a_2(1320)$, $\pi_2(1670)$, $\pi_2(1880)$, and $a_4(2040)$. In addition, it includes the disputed $\pi_1(1600)$, the excited states $a_1(1640)$, $a_2(1700)$, and $\pi_2(2005)$, as well as the resonancelike $a_1(1420)$. We measure the resonance parameters mass and width of these objects by combining the information from the PWA results obtained in the 11 $t'$ bins. We extract the relative branching fractions of the $\rho(770) \pi$ and $f_2(1270) \pi$ decays of $a_2(1320)$ and $a_4(2040)$, where the former one is measured for the first time. In a novel approach, we extract the $t'$ dependence of the intensity of the resonances and of their phases. The $t'$ dependence of the intensities of most resonances differs distinctly from the $t'$ dependence of the nonresonant components. For the first time, we determine the $t'$ dependence of the phases of the production amplitudes and confirm that the production mechanism of the Pomeron exchange is common to all resonances.
Real and imaginary parts of the normalized transition amplitudes $\mathcal{T}_a$ of the 14 selected partial waves in the 1100 $(m_{3\pi}, t')$ cells (see Eq. (12) in the paper). The wave index $a$ represents the quantum numbers that uniquely define the partial wave. The quantum numbers are given by the shorthand notation $J^{PC} M^\varepsilon [$isobar$] \pi L$. We use this notation to label the transition amplitudes in the column headers. The $m_{3\pi}$ values that are given in the first column correspond to the bin centers. Each of the 100 $m_{3\pi}$ bins is 20 MeV/$c^2$ wide. Since the 11 $t'$ bins are non-equidistant, the lower and upper bounds of each $t'$ bin are given in the column headers. The transition amplitudes define the spin-density matrix elements $\varrho_{ab}$ for waves $a$ and $b$ according to Eq. (18). The spin-density matrix enters the resonance-model fit via Eqs. (33) and (34). The transition amplitudes are normalized via Eqs. (9), (16), and (17) such that the partial-wave intensities $\varrho_{aa} = |\mathcal{T}_a|^2$ are given in units of acceptance-corrected number of events. The relative phase $\Delta\phi_{ab}$ between two waves $a$ and $b$ is given by $\arg(\varrho_{ab}) = \arg(\mathcal{T}_a) - \arg(\mathcal{T}_b)$. Note that only relative phases are well-defined. The phase of the $1^{++}0^+ \rho(770) \pi S$ wave was set to $0^\circ$ so that the corresponding transition amplitudes are real-valued. In the PWA model, some waves are excluded in the region of low $m_{3\pi}$ (see paper and [Phys. Rev. D 95, 032004 (2017)] for a detailed description of the PWA model). For these waves, the transition amplitudes are set to zero. The tables with the covariance matrices of the transition amplitudes for all 1100 $(m_{3\pi}, t')$ cells can be downloaded via the 'Additional Resources' for this table.

(19) and (20).
Differential cross sections for π − p and pp elastic scattering have been measured at incident momenta ranging from 30 to 345 GeV and in the t range 0.002 (GeV/ c ) 2 ⩽ | t | ⩽ 0.04 (GeV/ c ) 2 . From the analysis of the data, the ratio ϱ ( t = 0) of the real to the imaginary parts of the forward scattering amplitude was determined together with the logarithmic slope b of the diffraction cone.

Inclusive φ production is studied in π − p collisions at 16 GeV/ c . The φ cross section for Feynman variable x φ > 0.2 is found to be (15.5 ± 3.6) μb. This leads to an extrapolated cross section of (29.9 ± 7.0) μb for x φ > 0.0. Fitting the momentum transfer squared distribution of the φ to the form e −bp 2 T gives an average slope of b = (2.4 ± 0.3) (GeV/ c −2 for x φ > 0.5.

The inclusive production of ρ0 mesons was measured in γp andh±p collisions at beam energies of 65 GeV≦Eγ≦175 GeV andEh=80, 140 GeV, respectively, whereh is π orK. Cross sections were determined for all beams and energies as functions ofxF (−0.1≦xF≦1.0),pT (0≦pT≦3.5 GeV/c) and the polar decay angle of the ρ0 by fitting the ρ0 signal in π+π- mass distributions. The ρ0 line shape is found to be distorted from a pure Breit-Wigner distribution throughout most of thexF−pT plane for both photon and hadron beams and a simple explanation is suggested. Throughout the paper emphasis is put on the comparison of photon and hadron beam data. The comparison of cross sections of γp andhp data provides a measure of the Vector Meson Dominance factor throughout thexF−pT range of the ρ0. The ρ0 production at lowpT can be described for both photon and hadron beams by a triple regge model at largexF. Similarly central production is well described by the quark-antiquark fusion model. At largepT there is an excess of ρ0 photoproduction which is consistent with the expected onset of pointlike photon interactions.

The reaction π − p → K + K − π − p at 16 GeV/ c was studied in the CERN OMEGA spectrometer and a partial-wave analysis (PWA) of the low-mass (K + K − π − ) system (1.3–2.0 GeV) was performed. Only states in the unnatural spin-parity series produced by natural parity exchange are important and they approximately conserve t -channel helicity. The 1 + S K ∗ K wave dominates the low-mass (K + K − π − ) region. We observe an enhancement in 2 − P K ∗ K wave at a mass of 1.7 GeV, consistent with the decay of the A 3 resonance.
TOTAL ACCEPTANCE CORRECTED CROSS SECTION.
Inclusive production of ϕ,K*0, and\(\overline {K*^0 } \) mesons has been measured in γp, π±p andK± p collisions at beam energies of 65 GeV<Eγ<175 GeV andEπ/K =80 and 140 GeV. Cross sections have been determined over the range 0<xF<1.0 and 0<PT<1.8 GeV/c. Emphasis is put on the comparison of cross sections for different projectiles as a function ofxF so as to study the effects of common quarks between the beam particle and the detected ϕ,K*0 or\(\overline {K*^0 } \). The data are compared with a parton fusion model. Many features of the data are well explained. In detail the strange quark appears to carry a large fraction of the kaon momentum and the contribution of the valence quarks from the proton is small.

The inclusive cross sections for η production by the interactions of 280 GeV/c momentum π−, π+, and proton beams in hydrogen have been measured. Measurements are reported of inclusivef2(1270) andf0(975) production in γp, π±p andK±p collisions at photon beam energies of 65 to 175 GeV and hadron beam energies of 80 and 140 GeV. Thef2 andf0 mesons were found at masses of 1.250 GeV and 0.961 GeV respectively. Inclusivef2 production at lowxF was found to have a similarpT dependence for each beam type, whereas an additional pion-exchange contribution was found for production by pions at highxF. Cross sections are compared with those for ρ0 production and give no indication of a non-q\(\bar q\) component in eitherf-meson state.

New data have been obtained on a resonance in the ϕπ 0 system, the C meson, which is formed in the π − p → ϕπ 0 n charge-exchange reaction. The experiment has been performed at the Serpukhov 70 GeV accelerator. The mass and the width of the resonance are measured to be M =1480±40 MeV , Γ =130±60 MeV . The production cross section is determined at a π − momentum of 32.5 GeV / c : σ ( π − p → Cn )· BR ( C → ϕπ 0 )=40±15 nb . The C(1480) meson has an isospin I =1 and spin-parity J PC =1 − − . It is strongly coupled to the ϕπ 0 channel and is considered as a possible exotic meson.

THE ACCEPTANCE CORRECTED DISTRIBUTION.
Single charged-particle inclusive cross sections for photon, pion and kaon beams on hydrogen at the CERN-SPS are presented as functions ofpT andxF. Data cover the range 0.0<pT<5.0 GeV/c and 0.0<xF<1.0 at incident momenta from 70 to 170 GeV/c. The comparison between photon- and hadron-induced data indicates a relative excess of particles withpT>1.6 GeV/c for the photon-induced data. Using the hadron-induced data to estimate the hadronic behaviour of the photon, the difference distributions and ratios of cross sections are a measure of the contribution of the point-like photon interactions. The data are compared with QCD calculations and show broadly similar features.

We have measured small angle elastic pion-proton scattering in 40 and 50 GeV c π − beams at Serpukhov. Analysis of the data in the Coulomb interference region yields a value for the ratio of the real to the imaginary part of the strong amplitude, ϱ (0)=−0.074 ± 0.033 at 40 GeV/ c and ϱ (0)=−0.006 ±0.026 at 50 GeV/ c

The energy dependence of the differential cross section for $\pi^+ p$ elastic scattering at a c.m. angle near 174 ° has been measured. The momentum range of incident $\pi^+$ was 2.06-4.70 GeV/c. The differential cross section of π − p scattering has been measured in the energy region 100–345 GeV and in the t -range 0.002<| t |< 0.04 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The real part of the π − p scattering amplitude has been extracted from the data. The results show that the real part continues to increase with energy. The energy dependence of the slope parameter has also been determined. The shrinkage found expressed in terms of the slope of the pomeron trajectory is2 α ′ p =0.23±0.04 (GeV/ c ) −2 . This agrees with the energy dependence found at larger| t |-values.
RE(AMP)/IM(AMP) (REAL/IMAG) AND SLOPE PARAMETERS DEDUCED FROM A FIT TO D(SIG)/DT IN T HE COULOMB INTERFERENCE REGION (-T = 0.002 TO 0.04 GEV**2).
We report a study of 20 exclusive reactions measured at the AGS at 5.9 GeV/c incident momentum, 90° center of mass. This experiment confirms the strong quark flow dependence of two-body hadron-hadron scattering at large angle. At 9.9 GeV/c an upper limit had been set for the ratio of cross sections for (p¯p→p¯p)(pp→pp) at 90° c.m., with the ratio less than 4%. The present experiment was performed at lower energy to gain sensitivity, but was still within the fixed angle scaling region. A ratio R(p¯ppp)≈140 was measured at 5.9 GeV/c, 90° c.m. in comparison to a ratio near 1.7 for small angle scattering. In addition, many other reactions were measured, often for the first time at 90° c.m. in the scaling region, using beams of π±, K±, p, and p¯ on a hydrogen target. There are similar large differences in cross sections for other reactions: R(K−p→π+Σ−K−p→π−Σ+)≈112, for example. The relative magnitudes of the different cross sections are consistent with the dominance of quark interchange in these 90° reactions, and indicate that pure gluon exchange and quark-antiquark annihilation diagrams are much less important. The angular dependence of several elastic cross sections and the energy dependence at a fixed angle of many of the reactions are also presented.

We have studied neutral final states produced in π−p collisions at momenta of 1.71, 1.89, 2.07, 2.27, and 2.46 GeVc, by observing the γ rays emitted. In particular, measurements are presented of (i) π−p→π0n, for which the Regge-pole fit at momenta ≥5.9 GeVc also agrees rather well here; (ii) π−p→η0n, for which the Regge model which fits at higher energies does not agree here; (iii) π−p→π0γn, in which there is some evidence for a diffraction dissociation process as well as ω0-meson production; (iv) π−p→π0π0n, which is dominated by production of N*0(1236)π0 and by peripheral production of pion pairs. In (iv), the former process is found to fit with the same Reggeized ρ-meson exchange model as charge-exchange scattering, while the latter gives indication of the s-wave ππ interaction. An account is given of new techniques, particularly in the data analysis, which were developed in the course of this work.

The exclusive process π−p→ρ−p has been measured at 90° c.m. with an incident pion momentum of 9.9 GeV/c. We present data on the angular dependence of the decay ρ−→π−π0. A sample of 56 909 events of the reaction π − p→K + K − n at 10 GeV/ c has been measured in the Omega Spectrometer at CERN. In the K + K − system, besides production of mesons in the S ∗ /φ, f 0 / A 2 , g /ω ∗ and h regions we observe a new structure at 2.20 GeV with a width of the order of 200 MeV.

Results on the study of D(1285)→K + K − π 0 -decay are presented. The K + K − effective mass spectrum is measured with statistics which are by an order of magnitude higher than in the previous data. From the analysis of the differential spectrum d N d M KK (in the framework of the δ-dominance model) the δ-meson effective width is Γ δ >180MeV/ c 2 at √ s =1 GeV/ c 2 , which means a strong coupling of the δ-meson with hadrons.

The experimental results are presented for ratios of ν-meson inclusive differential cross sections in 10.5 GeV/ c π + p, π + D and π + A collisions, R D/p =(d σ /d x F )( π + D → η X)/ (d σ /d x F ) π + p→ η X), R A =(d σ /d x F )( π + D→ η X) in the beam fragmentation region. The results are based on the statistics of ≈ 5 × 10 4 detected η → 2 γ decays. It is shown that the power α in the parametrisation R A ≈ A α ( xf ) does not change significantly with x F and its mean value is 0.50±0.02. The lower limit is obtained for the effective coefficient with string tension in the colour string model, κ ⩾ 3 GeV/fm. The observed growth of R A with x F can be explained by an assumption of a neutron halo with the factor H ≈ 4 in the nuclei.
