Measurements of the polarization parameters and angular distributions are reported for π±p elastic scattering at 100 GeV/c and for pp elastic scattering at 100- and 300-GeV/c incident momentum. The π±p data cover the kinematic range 0.18≤−t≤1.10 GeV2 and are in agreement with current Regge-model predictions. The pp data cover the kinematic range 0.15≤−t≤1.10 GeV2 and 0.15≤−t≤2.00 GeV2 at 100 and 300 GeV/c, respectively, and are found to be consistent with absorption-model predictions.
The differential cross section of π+p elastic scattering has been measured in two high-statistics bubble-chamber exposures at laboratory beam momenta of 3.7 and 7.1 GeV/c. A new feature suggested by these data is a dip in dσdu at −u≃3 GeV2. This dip corresponds well to the third zero of J0(b−u′), where ℏcb=1 fm. The effective u-channel Regge trajectory computed for these two energies has a slope of 0.22 ± 0.26.
Quasi-inclusive and total inclusive ϱ + , ϱ − and ϱ 0 cross sections have been studied, using data of a π + p and a pp bubble chamber experiment at 16 and 24 GeV/ c , respectively. In pp collisions it is found that the total inclusive cross sections for ϱ 0 , ϱ + and ϱ − production are about equal. This equality also holds for the differential cross sections d σ/ d y ∗ , all showing the characteristics of dominantly central production. In the π + p reactions the ϱ − are mainly produced centrally, whereas there are strong additional contributions in the beam fragmentation region for ϱ + and ϱ 0 mesons. In the central region, however, the cross sections for ϱ + , ϱ − and ϱ 0 production are almost equal within errors. All our findings agree with what is expected from quark model predictions.

Strong evidence is presented for quasi-two-body production of a π + p enhancement with mass 1881±6MeV and width 219±23MeV, recoiling off vector mesons ϱ O and ω from π + p interactions at 7.1 GeV/ c and K * o (890) from K + p interactions at 12 GeV/ c . The most probable J P assignment for this object is 7/2 + , making it a likely candidate for the Regge recurrence of Δ(1236).

Results are reported based on a study of 3114 π−p events at 205 GeV/c in the National Accelerator Laboratory 30-in. bubble chamber. The measured π−p total and elastic cross sections are 24.0 ± 0.5 and 3.0 ± 0.3 mb, respectively. The elastic differential cross section has a slope of 9.0 ± 0.7 GeV−2 for 0.03≤−t≤0.6 GeV2. The average charged-particle multiplicity for the inelastic events is 8.02 ± 0.12.

Results of two studies of small angle elastic scattering are presented. The first experiment measured hadron-nucleus elastic scattering at 70, 125, 175 GeV/c incident momentum. The second experiment is a high statistics study of hadron-proton elastic scattering at 200 GeV/c incident momentum. Hadron-nucleus elastic scattering was measured for $\mu^{\pm}$, $K^{\pm}$, $p$, and $\bar{p}$ scatterinq from Be, C, Al, Cu, Sn, and Pb targets at .incident beam momenta of 70 and 175 GeV/c and for $\mu^+$, $K^+$, and $p$ scattering from Be, Al, and Pb targets at an incident beam momentum of 125 GeV/c. In all cases the minimum -t is 0.001 $(GeV/c)^2$ ; the maximum -t is 0.07, 0.16. 0.30 ($GeV/c)^2$ for incident beam momenta of 70, 125, 175 GeV/c respectively. The differential cross section d σ d t′ for the charge-exchange process π + p → π 0 ( π + p) at 8, 16 and 23 GeV/ c is presented for several regions of the π + p effective mass. It is found that the dip at t ′ ≈ 0.6 (GeV/ c ) 2 which is observed in the Δ(1236) mass band becomes a less pronounced structure in the higher mass regions. However, while the slope of the d σ d t′ distributions in the near-forward direction decreases strongly with increasing π + p mass, there is no evidence that the observed structure moves to higher values of t ′ as the π + p mass increases. These results are consistent with a Regge-exchange picture where the position of the dip is determined by the exchanged trajectory, but are inconsistent with a simple geometrical picture.
The inclusive production of Λ , K S 0 , Σ ± (1385) and K ∗± (892) in π − p interactions at 6 GeV/ c has been studied. The observed cross sections are: σ ( Λ )=0.94±0.06 mb, σ (K S 0 )=0.98±0.06 mb, σ ( Σ + (1385))=60±7 μb , σ ( Σ − (1385))=90±9 μ b, σ( K ∗+ (892))=216±28 μ b and σ( K ∗− (892))=41±8 μ b , respectively. The inclusive spectra of these particles are presented as functions of squared transverse momentum and Feynman scaling variable x . The polarization of Λ has also been investigated. It is found from a comparison with higher-energy data that the inclusive cross sections for Σ ± (1385) and the production ratios Σ ± (1385)/ Λ in π − p at 6 GeV/ c have not reached the high-energy limiting values.

Differential cross sections and polarizations have been measured for the reaction π − p → K 0 Λ and π − p → K 0 Σ 0 at 3.9 GeV/ c π − momentum. Comparison of these data with those of the related reactions K − n → π − Λ and K − p → π − Σ + (at approximately the same c.m. energy) indicate that simple Regge-pole models involving only K ∗ (890) and K ∗ (1420) exchange are unable to describe all the features of the data. On the other hand, comparison of the π − p → K 0 Σ 0 data with that of π + p → K + Σ + shows that the data are consistent with absence of exotic strange-meson exchange.

A comparison is made of the low-mass three-meson systems (πππ), (Kππ), (π K K ) and ( K K K ) diffractively produced in the reaction meson + proton → three mesons + proton. Several striking similarities and a few important differences are observed: (i) the reactions are consistent with the assumption that the three mesons decay entirely into a 0 − meson and a 0 + , 1 − or 2 + resonance; (ii) the three-meson mass spectra have a peak ≈ 250 MeV above the effective threshold M eff of the dominant decay mode and then fall off approximately as (mass) −3 ;(iii) the average spin 〈 J 〉 = 0.55 + 1.1 Q eff , where Q eff = M - M eff ; (iv) the average orbital angular momentum 〈 l 〉 increases according to 〈 l 〉 = 0.75 Q eff ; (v) the three-meson states are produced dominantly in unnatural spin-parity states and no evidence for their being resonant is found; (vi) the only natural spin-parity states found are the well-established 2 + resonances A 2 and K ∗ (1420); they have similar properties to the non-resonant unnatural parity states except for a dip at t = 0 in the dσ/d t distributions; (vii) both the unnatural and natural spin-parity states are produced mostly by an exchange of natural parity; (viii) there is evidence for two types of production mechanism with different polarization properties, one approximately conserving helicity in the t -channel and the other in the s -channel.
A high-statistics search for resonances in the π − p total cross section has been carried out over the incident momentum region from 2 to 14 GeV/ c . The measurements were performed with a transmission technique using multiwire proportional chambers in place of the conventional counter arrays. A microprocessor unit was used for the on-line analysis of the data, allowing a total of ≈ 50 000 events to be examined in a 300 ms burst. The search aimed at detecting the possible formation in π − p collisions of narrow non-strange baryon resonances. The momentum region was uniformly scanned with a total of ≈4500 mmeasurements in fixed fractional momentum steps of d P / P = 5 × 10 −4 . The relative statistical precision of each measurement was d σ / σ = ±0.3%. Within these limits no significant structure was detected.

Invariant single-particle cross sections for pion and proton production in π ± p interactions at 8 and 16 GeV/ c are presented in terms of integrated distributions as functions of x , reduced rapidity ζ and p ⊥ 2 , and also in terms of double differential cross sections E d 2 σ /(d x d p ⊥ 2 ) and d ζ d p ⊥ 2 ). A comparison of π ± and π − induced reactions is made and the energy dependence is discussed. It is shown that the single-particle structure function cannot be factorized in its dependece on transverse and longitudinal momentum. Results from a partial wave analysis of theKππ system produced in the hypercharge exchange reaction π−p→(K+π−π0)Λ at 3.95 GeV/c are presented. SignificantQ1 production is observed but no evidence is found forQ2 production thus confirming the results obtained in a previous decay Dalitz plot analysis of the same reaction. The relative phase behaviour of the 1+(Kϱ) partial waves obtained with the present analysis provides additional confirmation of the resonance interpretation of theQ1 enhancement. Information is also obtained about its production properties and the role played by the Λ polarization in the hypercharge exchange reaction. This is compared with the results obtained in the reactionK−p→(π+π−π0)Λ at 4 GeV/c.

The inclusive production of vector mesons (charged ρ(770), ω(783), ϕ(1020) and neutralK*(892)) in π−p interactions at 360 GeV/c is studied. A study of 205-GeV/c π−p interactions has been made with a 48 800-picture exposure in the bare Fermilab 30-inch hydrogen bubble chamber. The average number of charged particles produced per inelastic interaction is 7.99±0.06. The elastic cross section is 3.18±0.13 mb and the total cross section is 24.19±0.44 mb. The inclusive cross sections for neutral-particle production are: σ(γ)=171.3±15.3 mb, σ(KS0)=3.64±0.61 mb (x<0.3), σ(Λ)=1.71±0.34 mb (x<0.3), and σ(Λ¯)=0.59±0.23 mb (x<0.1). The average number of π0's produced per inelastic collision is consistent with a linear rise with the number of charged particles, and about equal to the number of produced π− or π+. The average number of K0's, Λ's, and Λ¯'s is consistent with very little dependence on the number of charged particles. General characteristics of neutral-particle production are presented and compared with other experiments. For each topology the produced neutral energy is ∼13 of the incident energy.

Data on inclusive jet production in the transverse-momentum (p⊥) range 0-8 GeV/c for 200-GeV/c p, π−, π+, K−, K+, and p¯ incident on a hydrogen target are presented. Differential cross sections for the elastic scattering of negative pions from hydrogen have been measured over a limited range of squared four-momentum transfer (t) in the vicinity of t≃−3 (GeV/c)2 for incident pion momenta of 2.51, 2.76, and 3.01 GeV/c. These measurements confirm the existence of a minimum in the differential cross section in this region of incident momentum and scattering angle. The minimum occurs at a smaller value of t [t≃−2.6 (GeV/c)2] than has been observed at higher momenta.

The reactions of positive pions with protons yielding four charged particles and one or more neutrals have been studied, especially the reaction π+p→Δ++ω0→pπ+π+π−π0. The results presented in this paper were obtained from a 100 000-picture exposure of the Argonne-MURA 30-in. liquid hydrogen bubble chamber, with a beam of incident pions of 4.09−GeVc momentum. Comparisons have been made with corresponding results of other experiments at various incident beam momenta, and with the predictions of some theoretical models of the π+p interaction.

An experiment using optical spark chambers and a neutron time-of-flight hodoscope has been performed at the Argonne National Laboratory on the reaction π−p→ω0n. The differential cross section and the experimentally accessible density-matrix elements were determined in the momentum transfer interval 0.05≤|t|≤1.0 (GeV/c)2 at each of three incident pion momenta 3.65, 4.50, and 5.50 GeV/c. Our results show the following general features: (1) a dip in the forward differential cross section for |t|≤0.2 (GeV/c)2, (2) a slope at larger momentum transfers which increases as the incident pion momentum increases, and (3) no dips in either dσdt or ρ11+ρ1−1, the natural-parity exchange combination, at |t|=0.6 (GeV/c)2.

Evidence for a new meson decaying into ηη′ has been found in 38 GeV π − p charge-exchange interactions. The mass and the width of this meson are (1917 ± 15) MeV and (90 −50 +35 ) MeV, respectively. Possible spin and parity assignments are J PC = 0 ++ , 1 −+ or 2 ++ , isospin and G -parity are I G = 0 + . The t -dependence of the differential cross section follows an exponential behaviour exp( bt with a small slope: b = (2±1) (GeV/ c ) −2 .Upper limits on its decay into ππ, ηη and K K exotic interpretation of this meson.

The π − p→ ωω n reaction has studied for the first time at the 70 GeV IHEP accelerator. The six photons from the decay of the two ω mesons were detected in GAMS-2000, a hodoscope multi-photon spectometer. Two resonances decaying into ωω,X (1640) and X(1960), have been observed. Their quantum numbers are J PC =2 ++ , I G =0 + . The reaction is dominated by the one-pion exchange mechanism. The production cross sections σ. BR(X→ ωω ) are 0.65±0.15 μ b and 1.0±0.2 μ b, respectively.

A sample of 56 909 events of the reaction π − p→K + K − n at 10 GeV/ c has been measured in the Omega Spectrometer at CERN. In the K + K − system, besides production of mesons in the S ∗ /φ, f 0 / A 2 , g /ω ∗ and h regions we observe a new structure at 2.20 GeV with a width of the order of 200 MeV.

The results presented in this paper were obtained from a 105 000 frame exposure of the FNAL Hybrid Proportional Wire Chamber-30 inch Bubble Chamber System, in a tagged beam of 147 GeV/ c negative particles. Elastic, total and topological cross sections were obtained for both π − p and K − p interactions. Comparisons with other data, taken with various beam particles over large momentum intervals, show good agreement with KNO scaling, and similarity in the scaling behavior of σ n for the different beam particles.

Analyzing powers of pion-proton elastic scattering have been measured at PSI with the Low Energy Pion Spectrometer LEPS as well as a novel polarized scintillator target. Angular distributions between 40 and 120 deg (c.m.) were taken at 45.2, 51.2, 57.2, 68.5, 77.2, and 87.2 MeV incoming pion kinetic energy for pi+ p scattering, and at 67.3 and 87.2 MeV for pi- p scattering. These new measurements constitute a substantial extension of the polarization data base at low energies. Predictions from phase shift analyses are compared with the experimental results, and deviations are observed at low energies.

From the study of the reaction π − p→p F p p π − using a fast proton (p F ) trigger device in the CERN Omega spectrometer, we find evidence for two narrow p p states produced mainly in association with a Δ° (1232) and a N° (1520). The statistical significance of each peak is greater than 6 standard deviations. Masses and natural widths of these resonances are respectively M = 2020 ± 3 MeV , Λ 1 = 24 ± 12 MeV and M 2 = 2204 ± 5 MeV, Λ 2 = 16 −16 +20 MeV. Our data are consistent with a small production of the narrow ∼ 1935 MeV resonance already reported. Production cross sections for these new p p resonances are given.
