The latest neutron electric dipole moment (EDM) experiment has been collecting data at the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), Grenoble, since 1996. It uses an atomic-mercury magnetometer to compensate for the magnetic field fluctuations that were the principal source of systematic errors in previous experiments. The first results, in combination with the previous ILL measurement, yield a possible range of values of (−7.0<dn<5.0)×10−26ecm ( 90% C.L.). This may be interpreted as an upper limit on the absolute value of the neutron EDM of |dn|<6.3×10−26ecm ( 90% C.L.).

The angular distribution of the inclusive reaction 4 He + p → 3 He + X was measured with 6.85 GeV/ c incident alphas. At large angles, the observed kinematics corresponds to the elastic scattering on the target proton of an 3 He present in the incoming 4 He, the remaining neutron being a spectator. This shows the presence of an important component of 3 He in 4 He. The integrated cross section for 3 He production is σ 3He = 24.1 ± 1.9 mb.

We present data on the five final states Λω, Λφ, Λϱ 0 , Σ 0 ⊘ and Σ 0 ϱ 0 produced in 3.1–3.6 GeV/ c K − p interactions. These data are from a bubble chamber experiment with 18 events/μb. For all reactions the data consist of the overall and differetial cross sections, and the hyperon polarisation and the vector meson's density matrix elements as a function of momentum transfer. For Λω and Λ⊘, an almost complete amplitude analysis is performed in several regions of momentum transfer. The data are examined from the point of view of various exchange models.

Search for $W' \rightarrow tb$ decays in the hadronic final state using pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for $W'$-boson production in the $W' \rightarrow t\bar{b} \rightarrow q\bar{q}' b\bar{b}$ decay channel is presented using 36.1 fb$^{-1}$ of 13 TeV proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider in 2015 and 2016. The search is interpreted in terms of both a left-handed and a right-handed chiral $W'$ boson within the mass range 1-5 TeV. Identification of the hadronically decaying top quark is performed using jet substructure tagging techniques based on a shower deconstruction algorithm. No significant deviation from the Standard Model prediction is observed and the results are expressed as upper limits on the $W' \rightarrow t\bar{b}$ production cross-section times branching ratio as a function of the $W'$-boson mass. These limits exclude $W'$ bosons with right-handed couplings with masses below 3.0 TeV and $W'$ bosons with left-handed couplings with masses below 2.9 TeV, at the 95% confidence level.

Measurements of differential cross-sections in four-lepton events in 13 TeV proton-proton collisions with the ATLAS detector

Measurements of four-lepton differential and integrated fiducial cross-sections in events with two same-flavour, opposite-charge electron or muon pairs are presented. The data correspond to 139 fb$^{-1}$ of $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV proton-proton collisions, collected by the ATLAS detector during Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider (2015-2018). The final state has contributions from a number of interesting Standard Model processes that dominate in different four-lepton invariant mass regions, including single $Z$ boson production, Higgs boson production and on-shell $ZZ$ production, with a complex mix of interference terms, and possible contributions from physics beyond the Standard Model. The differential cross-sections include the four-lepton invariant mass inclusively, in slices of other kinematic variables, and in different lepton flavour categories. Also measured are dilepton invariant masses, transverse momenta, and angular correlation variables, in four regions of four-lepton invariant mass, each dominated by different processes. The measurements are corrected for detector effects and are compared with state-of-the-art Standard Model calculations, which are found to be consistent with the data. The $Z\rightarrow 4\ell$ branching fraction is extracted, giving a value of $\left(4.41 \pm 0.30\right) \times 10^{-6}$. Constraints on effective field theory parameters and a model based on a spontaneously broken $B-L$ gauge symmetry are also evaluated. Further reinterpretations can be performed with the provided information.

Exclusive dimuon production in ultraperipheral collisions (UPC), resulting from photon-photon interactions in the strong electromagnetic fields of colliding high-energy lead nuclei, $\mathrm{PbPb}(\gamma\gamma) \rightarrow \mu^+\mu^- (\mathrm{Pb}^{(\star)}\mathrm{Pb}^{(\star)} )$, is studied using $\mathcal{L}_{\mathrm{int}} = 0.48$ nb$^{-1}$ of $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}=5.02$ TeV lead-lead collision data at the LHC with the ATLAS detector. Dimuon pairs are measured in the fiducial region $p_{\mathrm{T}\mu} > 4$ GeV, $|\eta_{\mu}| < 2.4$, invariant mass $m_{\mu\mu} > 10$ GeV, and $p_{\mathrm{T,\mu\mu}} < 2$ GeV. The primary background from single-dissociative processes is extracted from the data using a template fitting technique. Differential cross sections are presented as a function of $m_{\mu\mu}$, absolute pair rapidity ($|y_{\mu\mu}|$), scattering angle in the dimuon rest frame ($|\cos \vartheta^{\star}_{\mu\mu}|$) and the colliding photon energies. The total cross section of the UPC $\gamma \gamma \rightarrow \mu^{+}\mu^{-}$ process in the fiducial volume is measured to be $\sigma_{\mathrm{fid}}^{\mu\mu} = 34.1 \! \pm \! 0.3 \mathrm{(stat.)} \! \pm \! 0.7 \mathrm{(syst.)}$ $\mu\mathrm{b}$. Generally good agreement is found with calculations from STARlight, which incorporate the leading-order Breit-Wheeler process with no final-state effects, albeit differences between the measurements and theoretical expectations are observed. In particular, the measured cross sections at larger $|y_{\mu\mu}|$ are found to be about 10-20% larger in data than in the calculations, suggesting the presence of larger fluxes of photons in the initial state. Modification of the dimuon cross sections in the presence of forward and/or backward neutron production is also studied and is found to be associated with a harder incoming photon spectrum, consistent with expectations.

The reactions K − d→ Σ − p, K − d→ Σ − (1385)p, K − d→ Λ (1405)n and K − d→ Λ (1520)n have been studied at K − momenta between 686 and 844 MeV/ c in an experiment with the 81 cm Saclay bubble chamber at CERN. About 630 000 pictures have been analyzed. Partial and differential cross sections are presented. A one-nucleon-exchange model is used to extract the kaon-nucleon-hyperon coupling constants from these results. For g( K N Σ(1197)), g( K N Σ(1385)) and g( K N Λ(1405)) we find values which are compatible with the SU(3) predictions. The coupling constant g( K N Λ(1520)) obtained by our method agrees with that determined from the partial decay width for Λ(1520)→ K N .

A search for a $WZ$ resonance, in the fully leptonic final state (electrons and muons), is performed using 139 fb$^{-1}$ of data collected at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The results are interpreted in terms of a singly charged Higgs boson of the Georgi$-$Machacek model, produced by $WZ$ fusion, and of a Heavy Vector Triplet, with the resonance produced by $WZ$ fusion or the Drell$-$Yan process. No significant excess over the Standard Model predictions is observed and limits are set on the production cross-section times branching ratio as a function of the resonance mass for these processes.

Search for Dijet Resonances in 7 TeV pp Collisions at CMS

A search for narrow resonances in the dijet mass spectrum is performed using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.9 inverse pb collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. Upper limits at the 95% confidence level (CL) are presented on the product of the resonance cross section, branching fraction into dijets, and acceptance, separately for decays into quark-quark, quark-gluon, or gluon-gluon pairs. The data exclude new particles predicted in the following models at the 95% CL: string resonances, with mass less than 2.50 TeV, excited quarks, with mass less than 1.58 TeV, and axigluons, colorons, and E_6 diquarks, in specific mass intervals. This extends previously published limits on these models.

A search for the central exclusive production of top quark-antiquark pairs ($\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$) is performed for the first time using proton-tagged events in proton-proton collisions at the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 29.4 fb$^{-1}$. The $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$ decay products are reconstructed using the central CMS detector, while forward protons are measured in the CMS-TOTEM precision proton spectrometer. An observed (expected) upper bound on the production cross section of 0.59 (1.14) pb is set at 95% confidence level, for collisions of protons with fractional momentum losses between 2 and 20%.

Intermediate mass fragment emission in heavy ion collisions: Energy and system mass dependence

Emission of intermediate mass fragments (IMFs) (Z>~3) from central collisions of 40Ar+45Sc (E/A=35–115 MeV), 58Ni+58Ni (E/A=35–105 MeV), and 86Kr+93Nb (E/A=35–95 MeV) was studied. For each system, the average number of IMFs per event increased with beam energy, reached a maximum, and then decreased. The beam energy of peak IMF production increased linearly with the combined mass of the system. The number of IMFs emitted at the peak also increased with the system mass. Percolation calculations showed a weaker dependence of the peak beam energy and the number of IMFs on the total mass of the system.

The study of global event shape variables can provide sensitive tests of predictions for multijet production in proton-proton collisions. This paper presents a study of several event shape variables calculated using jet four momenta in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV and uses data recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.2 fb$^{-1}$. After correcting for detector effects, the resulting distributions are compared with several theoretical predictions. The agreement generally improves as the energy, represented by the average transverse momentum of the two leading jets, increases.

The first measurements of the Fourier coefficients ($V_{n\Delta}$) of the azimuthal distributions of charged hadrons emitted from photon-proton ($\gamma$p) interactions at the LHC are presented. The data are extracted from 68.8 nb$^{-1}$ of ultra-peripheral proton-lead (pPb) collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}$ = 8.16 TeV using the CMS detector. The high energy lead ions produce a flux of photons that can interact with the oncoming proton. This $\gamma$p system provides a set of unique initial conditions with multiplicity lower than in photon-lead collisions but comparable to recent electron-positron and electron-proton data. The $V_{n\Delta}$ coefficients are presented in ranges of event multiplicity and transverse momentum ($p_\mathrm{T}$) and are compared to corresponding hadronic minimum bias pPb results. For a given multiplicity range, the mean $p_\mathrm{T}$ of charged particles is smaller in $\gamma$p than in pPb collisions. For both the $\gamma$p and pPb samples, $V_{1\Delta}$ is negative, $V_{2\Delta}$ is positive, and $V_{3\Delta}$ consistent with 0. For each multiplicity and $p_\mathrm{T}$ range, $V_{2\Delta}$ is larger for $\gamma$p events. The $\gamma$p data are consistent with model predictions that have no collective effects.

The central exclusive production of charged-hadron pairs in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13\TeV is examined, based on data collected in a special high-$\beta^*$ run of the LHC. The nonresonant continuum processes are studied with the invariant mass of the centrally produced two-pion system in the resonance-free region, $m_{\pi^+\pi^-}$$\lt$ 0.7 GeV or $m_{\pi^+\pi^-}$$\gt$ 1.8 GeV. Differential cross sections as functions of the azimuthal angle between the surviving protons, squared exchanged four-momenta, and $m_{\pi^+\pi^-}$ are measured in a wide region of scattered proton transverse momenta, between 0.2 and 0.8 GeV, and for pion rapidities $\lvert y\rvert$$\lt$ 2. A rich structure of interactions related to double-pomeron exchange is observed. A parabolic minimum in the distribution of the two-proton azimuthal angle is observed for the first time. It can be interpreted as an effect of additional pomeron exchanges between the protons from the interference between the bare and the rescattered amplitudes. After model tuning, various physical quantities are determined that are related to the pomeron cross section, proton-pomeron and meson-pomeron form factors, pomeron trajectory and intercept, and coefficients of diffractive eigenstates of the proton.

A search for the exotic decay of the Higgs boson ($H$) into a $b\bar{b}$ resonance plus missing transverse momentum is described. The search is performed with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider using 139 $\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV. The search targets events from $ZH$ production in an NMSSM scenario where $H \rightarrow \tilde{\chi}^{0}_{2}\tilde{\chi}^{0}_{1}$, with $\tilde{\chi}^{0}_{2} \rightarrow {a} \tilde{\chi}^{0}_{1}$, where $a$ is a light pseudoscalar Higgs boson and $\tilde{\chi}^{0}_{1,2}$ are the two lightest neutralinos. The decay of the $a$ boson into a pair of $b$-quarks results in a peak in the dijet invariant mass distribution. The final-state signature consists of two leptons, two or more jets, at least one of which is identified as originating from a $b$-quark, and missing transverse momentum. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations and upper limits are set on the product of cross section times branching ratio for a three-dimensional scan of the masses of the $\tilde{\chi}^{0}_{2}$, $\tilde{\chi}^{0}_{1}$ and $a$ boson.

On slow-particle production in 200-A-GeV O-16 emulsion interactions

The multiplicity distributions and the correlations of different types of slow particles produced in 200A GeV oxygen-induced interactions with emulsion nuclei are presented. The experimental distributions are studied within the framework of the generalized Andersson-Otterlund-Stenlund (AOS) model for nucleus-nucleus interactions. The generalized (AOS) model fails to describe the present experimental data. Also a systematic comparison using the calculations of VENUS model is made. The grey-particles multiplicity is successfully reproduced by the theoretical multistring model VENUS, while the model is inadequate for explaining the distribution of black particles.

A search is conducted for new resonances decaying into a $WW$ or $WZ$ boson pair, where one $W$ boson decays leptonically and the other $W$ or $Z$ boson decays hadronically. It is based on proton-proton collision data with an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb$^{-1}$ collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV in 2015 and 2016. The search is sensitive to diboson resonance production via vector-boson fusion as well as quark-antiquark annihilation and gluon-gluon fusion mechanisms. No significant excess of events is observed with respect to the Standard Model backgrounds. Several benchmark models are used to interpret the results. Limits on the production cross section are set for a new narrow scalar resonance, a new heavy vector-boson and a spin-2 Kaluza-Klein graviton.

Measurements of the polarization parameters and angular distributions are reported for π±p elastic scattering at 100 GeV/c and for pp elastic scattering at 100- and 300-GeV/c incident momentum. The π±p data cover the kinematic range 0.18≤−t≤1.10 GeV2 and are in agreement with current Regge-model predictions. The pp data cover the kinematic range 0.15≤−t≤1.10 GeV2 and 0.15≤−t≤2.00 GeV2 at 100 and 300 GeV/c, respectively, and are found to be consistent with absorption-model predictions.

Measurements of the partial linear momentum transfer and production cross sections for light charged particles are reported for the reaction 680 MeV Ar40+natAg. From examination of light charged particle invariant cross section maps and comparison of experimental angular distributions and energy spectra to a reaction kinematics simulation, an average value of 85% linear momentum transfer is deduced, with a spin range of (0–75)ħ. A search for resonances decaying into a Higgs boson and a new particle $X$ in the $XH \to qqbb$ final state with the ATLAS detector

A search for heavy resonances decaying into a Higgs boson ($H$) and a new particle ($X$) is reported, utilizing 36.1 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV collected during 2015 and 2016 with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The particle $X$ is assumed to decay to a pair of light quarks, and the fully hadronic final state $XH \rightarrow q\bar q'b\bar b$ is analysed. The search considers the regime of high $XH$ resonance masses, where the $X$ and $H$ bosons are both highly Lorentz-boosted and are each reconstructed using a single jet with large radius parameter. A two-dimensional phase space of $XH$ mass versus $X$ mass is scanned for evidence of a signal, over a range of $XH$ resonance mass values between 1 TeV and 4 TeV, and for $X$ particles with masses from 50 GeV to 1000 GeV. All search results are consistent with the expectations for the background due to Standard Model processes, and 95% CL upper limits are set, as a function of $XH$ and $X$ masses, on the production cross-section of the $XH\rightarrow q\bar q'b\bar b$ resonance.

Ratio of J / psi production cross-sections in deep inelastic muon scattering from tin and carbon

We present results on J/ψ production in muon interactions with tin and carbon targets at incident muon energies of 200 and 280 GeV. The ratio of cross sections per nucleon for J/ψ production on tin and carbon, R (Sn/C), is studied as a function of p T 2 , z and x . We find an enhancement for coherent J/ψ production R coh (Sn/C) = 1.54 ± 0.07, a suppression for quasielastic production R qe (Sn/C) = 0.79 ± 0.06 and for inelastic production R in (Sn/C) = 1.13 ± 0.08. The inelastic cross section ratio can be interpreted within the Colour Singlet model as an enhancement of the gluon distribution in tin with respect to that in carbon. The dependence of the ratio on z and p T 2 can explain the discrepancy between the results obtained in previous experiments.

Differential cross sections for K − n → Σ o π o have been measured at K − momenta between 680 and 840 MeV/ c in a bubble chamber experiment. For K − n → Σ o π − the Σ o polarization was also determined. The measurements were combined with the available data on K − p → Σπ in an energy-dependent partial wave analysis in the center of mass energy range from 1520 to 1745 MeV. An acceptable fit was obtained with the well established resonances.

The polarization of $\tau$ leptons is measured using leptonic and hadronic $\tau$ lepton decays in Z $\to$$\tau^+\tau^-$ events in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV recorded by CMS at the CERN LHC with an integrated luminosity of 36.3 fb$^{-1}$. The measured $\tau^-$ polarization at the Z boson mass pole is $\mathcal{P}_{\tau}$(Z) = $-$0.144 $\pm$ 0.006 (stat) $\pm$ 0.014 (syst) = $-$0.144 $\pm$ 0.015, in good agreement with the measurement of the $\tau$ lepton asymmetry parameter of $A_{\tau}$ = 0.1439 $\pm$ 0.0043 = $-\mathcal{P}_{\tau}$(Z) at LEP. The $\tau$ polarization depends on the ratio of the vector to axial-vector couplings of the $\tau$ leptons in the neutral current expression, and thus on the effective weak mixing angle $\sin^{2}\theta_\mathrm{W}^{\text{eff}}$, independently of the Z boson production mechanism. The obtained value $\sin^{2}\theta_\mathrm{W}^{\text{eff}}$ = 0.2319 $\pm$ 0.0008 (stat) $\pm$ 0.0018 (syst) = 0.2319 $\pm$ 0.0019 is in good agreement with measurements at e$^+$e$^-$ colliders.

The differential cross section of π+p elastic scattering has been measured in two high-statistics bubble-chamber exposures at laboratory beam momenta of 3.7 and 7.1 GeV/c. A new feature suggested by these data is a dip in dσdu at −u≃3 GeV2. This dip corresponds well to the third zero of J0(b−u′), where ℏcb=1 fm. The effective u-channel Regge trajectory computed for these two energies has a slope of 0.22 ± 0.26.

A measurement of continuum dimuon production in proton-copper collisions at 800-GeV incident energy is presented. The dimuons observed in this experiment cover the mass range from 6.5 to 18 GeV near y=0 in the proton-nucleon center-of-momentum frame. Scaling forms of the cross section for the continuum are compared with the results of other experiments in the context of the parton model and quantum chromodynamics. The present limitations of such scaling comparisons are discussed.

Attenuation measurements of reaction and total cross sections have been made for π− beams at 410, 464, and 492 MeV on targets of CD2, 6Li, C, Al, S, Ca, Cu, Zr, Sn, and Pb. These results are assisted by and compared to predictions from a recent eikonal optical model. Calculations with this model, which does not include pion absorption, agree with recent elastic scattering data, but are significantly below our measured reaction and total cross sections.

Data from heavy ion collisions suggest that the evolution of a parton shower is modified by interactions with the color charges in the dense partonic medium created in these collisions, but it is not known where in the shower evolution the modifications occur. The momentum ratio of the two leading partons, resolved as subjets, provides information about the parton shower evolution. This substructure observable, known as the splitting function, reflects the process of a parton splitting into two other partons and has been measured for jets with transverse momentum between 140 and 500 GeV, in pp and PbPb collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 5.02 GeV per nucleon pair. In central PbPb collisions, the splitting function indicates a more unbalanced momentum ratio, compared to peripheral PbPb and pp collisions. The measurements are compared to various predictions from event generators and analytical calculations.

A search for the supersymmetric partners of the Standard Model bottom and top quarks is presented. The search uses 36.1 fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collision data at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. Direct production of pairs of bottom and top squarks ($\tilde{b}_{1}$ and $\tilde{t}_{1}$) is searched for in final states with $b$-tagged jets and missing transverse momentum. Distinctive selections are defined with either no charged leptons (electrons or muons) in the final state, or one charged lepton. The zero-lepton selection targets models in which the $\tilde{b}_{1}$ is the lightest squark and decays via $\tilde{b}_{1} \rightarrow b \tilde{\chi}^{0}_{1}$, where $\tilde{\chi}^{0}_{1}$ is the lightest neutralino. The one-lepton final state targets models where bottom or top squarks are produced and can decay into multiple channels, $\tilde{b}_{1} \rightarrow b \tilde{\chi}^{0}_{1}$ and $\tilde{b}_{1} \rightarrow t \tilde{\chi}^{\pm}_{1}$, or $\tilde{t}_{1} \rightarrow t \tilde{\chi}^{0}_{1}$ and $\tilde{t}_{1} \rightarrow b \tilde{\chi}^{\pm}_{1}$, where $\tilde{\chi}^{\pm}_{1}$ is the lightest chargino and the mass difference $m_{\tilde{\chi}^{\pm}_{1}}- m_{\tilde{\chi}^{0}_{1}}$ is set to 1 GeV. No excess above the expected Standard Model background is observed. Exclusion limits at 95\% confidence level on the mass of third-generation squarks are derived in various supersymmetry-inspired simplified models.

Coherent single charged pion production by neutrinos

We report on a measurement of coherent single charged pion production in neutrino-nucleus scattering. The analysis is based on data taken with the CHARM II detector in beams of muon-neutrinos and -antineutrinos. The event numbers amount to N ( μ − π ) = 748 and N ( μ + π ) = 631. Cross sections and their dependence on the neutrino energy are determined. The results are in agreement with the predictions of models based on the PCAC hypothesis.

We study $\Lambda$ and $\bar{\Lambda}$ production asymmetries in $p \bar{p} \rightarrow \Lambda (\bar{\Lambda}) X$, $p \bar{p} \rightarrow J/\psi \Lambda (\bar{\Lambda}) X$, and $p \bar{p} \rightarrow \mu^\pm \Lambda (\bar{\Lambda}) X$ events recorded by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider at $\sqrt{s} = 1.96$ TeV. We find an excess of $\Lambda$'s ($\bar{\Lambda}$'s) produced in the proton (antiproton) direction. This forward-backward asymmetry is measured as a function of rapidity. We confirm that the $\bar{\Lambda}/\Lambda$ production ratio, measured by several experiments with various targets and a wide range of energies, is a universal function of "rapidity loss", i.e., the rapidity difference of the beam proton and the lambda.

We measure the forward-backward asymmetries $A_{\rm FB}$ of charged $\Xi$ and $\Omega$ baryons produced in $p \bar{p}$ collisions recorded by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider at $\sqrt{s} = 1.96$ TeV as a function of the baryon rapidity $y$. Search for Monotop Signatures in Proton-Proton Collisions at $\sqrt s =$ 8 TeV

Results are presented from a search for new decaying massive particles whose presence is inferred from an imbalance in transverse momentum and which are produced in association with a single top quark that decays into a bottom quark and two light quarks. The measurement is performed using 19.7 inverse femtobarns of data from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV, collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. No deviations from the standard model predictions are observed and lower limits are set on the masses of new invisible bosons. In particular, scalar and vector particles, with masses below 330 and 650 GeV, respectively, are excluded at 95% confidence level, thus substantially extending a previous limit published by the CDF Collaboration.

A study of proton-proton collisions in which two b hadrons are produced in association with a Z boson is reported. The collisions were recorded at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC, for an integrated luminosity of 5.2 inverse femtobarns. The b hadrons are identified by means of displaced secondary vertices, without the use of reconstructed jets, permitting the study of b-hadron pair production at small angular separation. Differential cross sections are presented as a function of the angular separation of the b hadrons and the Z boson. In addition, inclusive measurements are presented. For both the inclusive and differential studies, different ranges of Z boson momentum are considered, and each measurement is compared to the predictions from different event generators at leading-order and next-to-leading-order accuracy.

Stringent limits are set on the long-lived lepton-like sector of the phenomenological minimal supersymmetric standard model (pMSSM) and the anomaly-mediated supersymmetry breaking (AMSB) model. The limits are derived from the results presented in a recent search for long-lived charged particles in proton-proton collisions, based on data collected by the CMS detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider. In the pMSSM parameter sub-space considered, 95.9% of the points predicting charginos with a lifetime of at least 10 ns are excluded. These constraints on the pMSSM are the first obtained at the LHC. Charginos with a lifetime greater than 100 ns and masses up to about 800 GeV in the AMSB model are also excluded. The method described can also be used to set constraints on other models.

We present cross sections for e+e−→hadrons, e+e−, and μ+μ− near 3095 MeV. The ψ(3095) resonance is established as having an assignment JPC=1−−. The mass is 3095 ±4 MeV. The partial width to electrons is Γe=4.8±0.6 keV and the total width Γ=69±15 keV. Total rates and interference measurements for the lepton channels are in accord with μ−e universality.

The energy loss spectrum of 150 GeV muons has been measured with a prototype of the ATLAS hadron calorimeter in the H8 beam of the CERN SPS. The differential probability dP/dv per radiation length of a fractional energy loss v = ΔEμ/Eμ has been measured in the range v = 0.01 ÷ 0.95; it is compared with the theoretical predictions for energy losses due to bremsstrahlung and production of electron—positron pairs or of energetic knock-on electrons. The integrated probability \(\int_{0.01}^{0.95}({\rm d}P/{\rm d}v){\rm d}v\) is (1.610 ± 0.015stat ± 0.105syst) · 10−3 in agreement with the theoretical predictions 1.556 · 10−3 and 1.619 · 10−3. Agreement with theory is also found in two intervals of v where production of electron-positron pairs and knock-on electrons dominates. In the region of bremsstrahlung dominance (v = 0.12 ÷ 0.95) the measured integrated probability (1.160 ± 0.040stat ± 0.075syst) · 10−4 is in agreement with the theoretical value of 1.185 · 10−4, obtained using the Petrukhin and Shestakov description of the bremsstrahlung process. The same result is about 3.6 standard deviations (defined as the quadratic sum of statistical and systematic errors) lower than the theoretical prediction of 1.472 · 10−4, obtained using Tsai’s description of bremsstrahlung.

Inclusive Neutron and Lambda Production in Proton Proton Interactions at 12-GeV/c and 24-GeV/c

A method for the determination of neutron spectra in a bubble chamber experiment is developed. Double differential cross sections for inclusive neutron and lambda production are presented. The n/Λ particle ratios are determined as functions of x and p T ; at p T = 0 GeV/ c they are compatible with the ratios measured in pCu interactions at 24 GeV/ c . Our neutron spectra are compared with spectra for protons produced near the direction of the incident neutron in pn interactions at FNAL and with neutron spectra measured in pp interactions at the ISR. Exchange mechanisms are studied in the framework of single diffraction dissociation and the triple-Regge model. The scattering of virtual pions and kaons on real protons is investigated.

Results of two studies of small angle elastic scattering are presented. The first experiment measured hadron-nucleus elastic scattering at 70, 125, 175 GeV/c incident momentum. The second experiment is a high statistics study of hadron-proton elastic scattering at 200 GeV/c incident momentum. Hadron-nucleus elastic scattering was measured for $\mu^{\pm}$, $K^{\pm}$, $p$, and $\bar{p}$ scatterinq from Be, C, Al, Cu, Sn, and Pb targets at .incident beam momenta of 70 and 175 GeV/c and for $\mu^+$, $K^+$, and $p$ scattering from Be, Al, and Pb targets at an incident beam momentum of 125 GeV/c. In all cases the minimum -t is 0.001 $(GeV/c)^2$ ; the maximum -t is 0.07, 0.16. 0.30 ($GeV/c)^2$ for incident beam momenta of 70, 125, 175 GeV/c respectively. The average longitudinal and transverse momentum of neutral pions and the average π 0 multiplicity ▪ 〈 n π 0〉 are estimated. It is found that 〈 n π 0〉 is an increasing function of the number of charged prongs.

Investigation of rho+, rho- and rho0 Production in pi+ p Interactions at 16-GeV/c and p p Interactions at 24-GeV/c and Quark Model Predictions

Quasi-inclusive and total inclusive ϱ + , ϱ − and ϱ 0 cross sections have been studied, using data of a π + p and a pp bubble chamber experiment at 16 and 24 GeV/ c , respectively. In pp collisions it is found that the total inclusive cross sections for ϱ 0 , ϱ + and ϱ − production are about equal. This equality also holds for the differential cross sections d σ/ d y ∗ , all showing the characteristics of dominantly central production. In the π + p reactions the ϱ − are mainly produced centrally, whereas there are strong additional contributions in the beam fragmentation region for ϱ + and ϱ 0 mesons. In the central region, however, the cross sections for ϱ + , ϱ − and ϱ 0 production are almost equal within errors. All our findings agree with what is expected from quark model predictions.

Anti-p p and p p Forward Elastic Scattering Between 4-GeV/c and 10-GeV/c

Differential cross sections have been measured in the region of small forward angles (between 0 and ∼40 mrad) for the elastic scattering reactions pp → pp at 4.2, 7.0 and 10.0 GeV /c and p p → p p at 4.2, 6.0, 8.0 and 10.0 GeV /c . The maximum momentum transfer is ∼0.025 GeV 2 at the lowest and ∼0.10 GeV/c at the highest incident momentum. Values of the slope and the real part of the forward scattering amplitude of the above reactions have been derived; the values obtained are in good agreement with dispersion relations.

Measurement of the Spin Dependent Neutron Proton Total Cross-section Differences $\Delta \Sigma^- T$ and $\Delta \Sigma^-$l Between 0.63-{GeV} and 1.08-{GeV}

We present first measurements of total cross section differences Δσ T and Δσ L for a polarized neutron beam transmitted through a polarized proton target. Measurements were carried out at SATURNE II, at 0.63, 0.88, 0.98 and 1.08 GeV. The results are compared with Δσ L data points deduced from p-d and p-p transmission experiments, and with phase shift analyses predictions. The present results together with the corresponding pp data yield two of the three spin dependent forward scattering amplitudes for isospin I =0.

Results are reported of a study of the hypercharge reactions K − p → ωΛ (la), K − p → φΛ (lb), K − p → φ ∑ o (lc), K − p → ϱ o Λ (ld), K − p → ϱ o ∑ o (le), K − p → ϱ − ∑ + (lf) in a 12 events/ub bubble chamber experiment using K − mesons of 4.25 GeV/ c momentum. Total and differential cross sections are presented as well as the density matrix elements of the peripherally produced vector meson and (except for reaction (1f)) the hyperon polarization. For reactions (1a) and (1b) an amplitude analysis is performed. The mass and the width of the ϱ−, φ− and f-meson have been determined.

Precision Measurement of the K- p --> anti-K0 n Cross-Section Below 1.1-GeV/c

We report the results of a precise measurement of the K−p→K¯∘n cross section between 515 and 1065 MeV/c in steps of 10 MeV/c. The statistical errors are less than 1%, a major improvement in accuracy over previous work. No evidence is found for the new I=1 K¯N resonances at 546 and 602 MeV/c reported recently by Carroll et al.

Evidence for anomalous lepton production in e+ e- annihilation.

We have found events of the form e++e−→e±+μ∓+missingenergy, in which no other charged particles or photons are detected. Most of these events are detected at or above a center-of-mass energy of 4 GeV. The missing-energy and missing-momentum spectra require that at least two additional particles be produced in each event. We have no conventional explanation for these events.
