The reactionsπ−p→K0∑0(1385) andπ−p→K+∑−(1385) are studied at an incident momentum of 3.95 GeV/c using data from a high statistics bubble chamber experiment corresponding to approximately 90 events/μb. The total and differential cross sections and the density matrix elements of the Σ(1385) are presented. The results are compared with those obtained for the related processesπpp→K+∑+(1385) and\(K^ -p \to \pi ^ \mp\sum ^ \pm(1385)\) in this energy range. Evidence is presented for the existence of production mechanisms with exotic exchanges in thet channel.

Exotic exchange processes observed in K − p and π − p scattering in the neighbourhoood of 4 GeV/ c are analysed in terms of standard models. Some new data on π − p induced processes are presented and used in the analysis. Regge-Regge cut predictions are found to be smaller than the data up to these energies. Baryonium exchange models are shown to be indistindistinguishable from Regge cut models as regards their phenomenological predictions. The double scattering quark model of Białas and Zalewski is compatible with data on the exotic exchange production of Σ and Y ∗ (1385), but fails for Ξ and Ξ ∗ (1530) production. Modifications of this model are discussed.

THE DATA FOR B+ PRODUCTION ARE QUOTED FROM CHUNG ET AL., PR D11, 2426 (1975) USING THE SLAC 82 IN HBC. 1.08 < M(PI OMEGA) < 1.38 GEV.
In a high statistics (90 events/μb) bubble chamber experiment, the reactions π − p→K s 0 K ± π ∓ n have been studied at 3.95 GeV/ c . A significant enhancement is observed in the ( K K π) system which we attribute to the production of the E(1420) meson. For its mass, M , and width, Λ, we find M =1426±6 MeV and Γ =40±15 MeV. The E(1420) quantum numbers are determined to be I G J P =0 + 1 + with a branching ratio E → K ∗ K + c.c E →[δπ+( K ∗ K + c.c. )]=0.86±0.12 , where δ→ K K . The cross section for the reaction π − p→En, with E→K 0 K ± π ± , is 8.2±1.0 μ b. Forward and backward productions are observed in the approximate ratio 2:1. The SU(3) assignment of the E(1420) meson is discussed.

Charm D-meson production in 360 GeV π − p interactions has been studied using the high-resolution hydrogen bubble chamber LEBC and the European Hybrid Spectrometer. The data show evidence for leading quark effects both in the number of D-meson types and in the Feynman x distributions. The production cross section is of the form d 2 δ d x d p T 2 ∞(1-x) n exp (-ap T 2 ) with n = 2.8±0.8 and a = 1.1±0.3 (GeV/ c ) −2 . The x distribution is, however, compatible with the presence of both central ( n = 6) and leading (n = 1) D / D production. The fraction of D-messons in the leading component is estimated to be ≈30%. The rapidity gap between members of reconstructed charm pairs is small compared to the available rapidity range. The inclusive cross section for single D-messons in the forward direction is: δ(D/ D )=(40 8 +15 )μ b ( for x>0) .

A study of the properties of charm particles produced in 360 GeV/c π-p interactions is reported. The experiment was performed using the high resolution hydrogen bubble chamber LEBC in association with the European Hybrid Spectrometer at the CERN SPS. Details of the exposure and operation of the spectrometer are given and the methods used to extract the charm data are presented. The essential physics results on the decay properties (lifetime, branching ratios) as well as on the hadroproduction properties (cross sections forD,\(\bar D\),F, Λc,D, correlations between charm particles) are given.

The inclusive cross sections for forward D meson production at s =26 GeV in π − p interactions have been measured to be: σ(π − p → D 0 / D 0 + X ) x F >0 = (10.1±2.2)μ b , σ(π − p → D ±+ X ) x F >0 = (5.7±1.6)μ b . The distribution in x F for all D and for x F >0 has the form d σ/ d x F =107 −37 +39 (1−x F ) 7.5 −1.7 +2.5 +5.4 −3.8 +6.0 (1−x F ) 0.7 −0.7 1.0 μ b , with evidence for leading D production. Q-meson production is studied in the hypercharge exchange reaction π-p → (Kππ)Λ at 3.95 GeV/c by selecting events witht(π- →Kππ)>1.2GeV2. An enhancement with a mass of 1294±10 MeV and a width of 66±15 MeV is observed in the (Kππ) mass distribution. A spin-parity analysis of the (Kππ) decay Dalitz plot shows the enhancement to be in theJP=1+S(Kϱ) wave and is therefore attributed toQ1-meson production. No evidence is found for the decayQ1→K0ω but limited statistics allow only placing an upper limit of 30% for the decay ratioKω/Kϱ0. TheQ1 production cross section fort(π- →Kππ)>1.2GeV2 is 8±1.3 μb. No evidence is found for the process π-p→Q2Λ withQ2→K*π for which the partial wave analysis gives an upper cross section limit of 2.5 μb at the 95% confidence level.

This result, if confirmed, implies a corresponding reduction in the accepted values for some total cross section measurements. The inclusive production of vector mesons (charged ρ(770), ω(783), ϕ(1020) and neutralK*(892)) in π−p interactions at 360 GeV/c is studied. The data are based on 160 000 reconstructed events recorded in the NA 27 Experiment using the LEBC-EHS facility at CERN. The production cross sections in the forward hemisphere in c.m.s. and the longitudinal momentum distributions are determined. The results are compared with data obtained at lower energies.

Results from a partial wave analysis of theKππ system produced in the hypercharge exchange reaction π−p→(K+π−π0)Λ at 3.95 GeV/c are presented. SignificantQ1 production is observed but no evidence is found forQ2 production thus confirming the results obtained in a previous decay Dalitz plot analysis of the same reaction. The relative phase behaviour of the 1+(Kϱ) partial waves obtained with the present analysis provides additional confirmation of the resonance interpretation of theQ1 enhancement. Information is also obtained about its production properties and the role played by the Λ polarization in the hypercharge exchange reaction. This is compared with the results obtained in the reactionK−p→(π+π−π0)Λ at 4 GeV/c.

A description is given of an experiment to study elastic scattering of π ± , K ± and p on protons at c.m. scattering angles from 45° to 100° at incident laboratory momenta 20 GeV/ c and 30 GeV/ c . The corresponding t range is from −6.2 (GeV/ c ) 2 to −28 (GeV/ c ) 2 . There are no previous observations for these reactions in this t range. High intensity and large geometrical acceptance were required in order to measure the low cross sections. The experiment used a double-arm spectrometer. MWPCs were used for reconstruction, and threshold and differential Čerenkov counters for identification. Scintillation counters, Čerenkov counters and a hadron calorimeter were used in the trigger. The trigger logic utilized specially designed matrices and a hard wired microprocessor. The π − p elastic scattering cross sections follow approximately the dimensional counting rule from 3.5 GeV/ c .and up to 30 GeV/ c . The cross sections decrease by seven orders of magnitude in this energy range. The data is compared to quark models. None of these models give a comprehensive description of the results. However, some modifications to these models improve their consistency with the data.

Elastic cross-section measurements are presented for π ± −p at 20 GeV/ c and π − −p at 30 GeV/ c incident momenta in the large angle region (50° to 90° in the c.m. system). The data are compared with published lower energy elastic cross sections. A test is made of the dimensional counting rules for π ± −p elastic scattering and some indication of a deviation from this rule is observed in the π − −p case. A comparison is also made with the predictions of the constituent interchange model. Although the broad features of the predictions are confirmed, there are some important discrepancies. Finally, the predictions of the model due to Preparata and Soffer are also compared with the new data.
