We report the extraction of R = σ L / σ T from a global analysis of eight SLAC deep inelastic experiments on e-p and e-d scattering performed between 1970 and 1985. Values of R p , R d , and R d − R p are determined over the entire SLAC kinematic range: 0.1⩽ x ⩽0.9 and 0.6⩽ Q 2 ⩽20.0 (GeV/ c ) 2 . We find that R p = R d . Measured values of R ( x , Q 2 ) are larger than predictions based on perturbative QCD and on QCD with the inclusion of kinematic target mass terms, indicating that dynamical higher twist effects may be important in the SLAC kinematic range.

We present a next-to-leading order QCD analysis of the presently available data on the spin structure function g1 including the final data from the Spin Muon Collaboration. We present results for the first moments of the proton, deuteron, and neutron structure functions, and determine singlet and nonsinglet parton distributions in two factorization schemes. We also test the Bjorken sum rule and find agreement with the theoretical prediction at the level of 10%.
The second systematic (DSYS) error is due to QCD evolution.

The spin structure function of the neutron g1n has been determined over the range 0.03<x<0.6 at an average Q2 of 2 (GeV/c)2 by measuring the asymmetry in deep inelastic scattering of polarized electrons from a polarized He3 target at energies between 19 and 26 GeV. The integral of the neutron spin structure function is found to be F01g1n(x)dx=-0.022±0.011. Earlier reported proton results together with the Bjorken sum rule predict F01g1n(x)dx=-0.059±0.019.

We report measurements of the electroproduction of ϕ mesons from hydrogen at Q2 values of 0.23, 0.43, and 0.97 GeV2 with |t| varying from 0.125 to 1.3 GeV2 at each Q2 point. The data show no evidence for a Q2 dependence of the slope of the t distribution; the forward cross section falls with increasing Q2 as the square of the ϕ propagator; the decay angular distributions agree with the predictions of s-channel helicity conservation; and the ratio of the longitudinal to the transverse component increases linearly with Q2.

We report measurements of kaon electroproduction from hydrogen and deuterium targets carried out at the Wilson Synchrotron Laboratory at Cornell University. The reactions γVp→K+X0, K+Γ, and K+Σ0 were studied in the kinematic region 2.15≤W≤3.1 GeV and 1.2<Q2<4.0 GeV2 as a function of Q2, W, and ω. The K+Σ0 cross sections fall much more rapidly with increasing Q2 than the K+Λ cross sections so that K+Σ0KΛ→0 as Q2 increases.

We report measurements of the electroproduction of single charged pions from hydrogen and deuterium targets for values of ε in the range 0.35<ε<0.45. Data were taken with a hydrogen target at the (W, Q2) points (2.15 GeV, 1.2 GeV2), (2.65, 2.0), (2.65, 3.4), (2.65, 6.0), and (2.65, 10.0). Data were taken with a deuterium target at the (W, Q2) points (2.15, 1.2) and (2.65, 2.0). The transverse cross section obtained by using these data in conjunction with earlier data at high ε to separate the longitudinal and transverse components is used in conjunction with the new data and the t-channel Born term to determine the pion form factor and to re-evaluate previously reported measurements. In the range 0.15 GeV2<Q2<10.0 GeV2 the pion form factor can be described by the simple pole form [1+Q2(0.462±0.024)]−1.

The second-order azimuthal anisotropy Fourier harmonics, v2, are obtained in pPb and PbPb collisions over a wide pseudorapidity (eta) range based on correlations among six or more charged particles. The pPb data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35 inverse nanobarns, were collected during the 2013 LHC pPb run at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV by the CMS experiment. A sample of semi-peripheral PbPb collision data at sqrt(s[NN])= 2.76 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.5 inverse microbarns and covering a similar range of particle multiplicities as the pPb data, is also analyzed for comparison. The six- and eight-particle cumulant and the Lee-Yang zeros methods are used to extract the v2 coefficients, extending previous studies of two- and four-particle correlations. For both the pPb and PbPb systems, the v2 values obtained with correlations among more than four particles are consistent with previously published four-particle results. These data support the interpretation of a collective origin for the previously observed long-range (large Delta[eta]) correlations in both systems. The ratios of v2 values corresponding to correlations including different numbers of particles are compared to theoretical predictions that assume a hydrodynamic behavior of a pPb system dominated by fluctuations in the positions of participant nucleons. These results provide new insights into the multi-particle dynamics of collision systems with a very small overlapping region.

Data obtained with the bubble chamber BEBC at CERN are used for the first significant test of Adler's prediction for the neutrino and antineutrino-proton scattering cross sections at vanishing four-momentum transfer squaredQ2. An Extended Vector Meson Dominance Model (EVDM) is applied to extrapolate Adler's prediction to experimentally accessible values ofQ2. The data show good agreement with Adler's prediction forQ2→0 thus confirming the PCAC hypothesis in the kinematical region of high leptonic energy transfer ν>2 GeV. The good agreement of the data with the theoretical predictions also at higherQ2, where the EVDM terms are dominant, also supports this model. However, an EVDM calculation without PCAC is clearly ruled out by the data.

We have performed absolute measurements of the differential cross section for elastic e−p scattering in the range of momentum transfer from Q2=2.9 to 31.3 (GeV/c)2. Combined statistical and systematic uncertainties in the cross-section measurements ranged from 3% at low Q2 to 19% at high Q2. These data have been used to extract the proton magnetic form factor GMp(Q2). The results show a smooth decrease of Q4GMp with momentum transfer above Q2=10 (GeV/c)2. These results are compared with recent predictions of perturbative QCD.

We have measured inelastic electron-deuteron, electron-proton, and electron-aluminum cross sections at 10° in the kinematic region between elastic deuteron scattering and the second resonance region at six beam energies between 9.8 and 21 GeV. The elastic electron-neutron cross section was extracted from the quasielastic data at Q2=2.5,4.0,6.0,8.0, and 10.0 (GeV/c)2. The ratio of elastic cross sections σnσp falls with increasing Q2 above 6 (GeV/c)2. The inelastic data are compatible either with y scaling (scattering from a single nucleon) or with ξ scaling (scattering from quarks).

We report the results of a new measurement of spin structure functions of the deuteron in the region of moderate momentum transfer ($Q^2$ = 0.27 -- 1.3 (GeV/c)$^2$) and final hadronic state mass in the nucleon resonance region ($W$ = 1.08 -- 2.0 GeV). We scattered a 2.5 GeV polarized continuous electron beam at Jefferson Lab off a dynamically polarized cryogenic solid state target ($^{15}$ND$_3$) and detected the scattered electrons with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS). From our data, we extract the longitudinal double spin asymmetry $A_{||}$ and the spin structure function $g_1^d$. Our data are generally in reasonable agreement with existing data from SLAC where they overlap, and they represent a substantial improvement in statistical precision. We compare our results with expectations for resonance asymmetries and extrapolated deep inelastic scaling results. Finally, we evaluate the first moment of the structure function $g_1^d$ and study its approach to both the deep inelastic limit at large $Q^2$ and to the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule at the real photon limit ($Q^2 \to 0$). We find that the first moment varies rapidly in the $Q^2$ range of our experiment and crosses zero at $Q^2$ between 0.5 and 0.8 (GeV/c)$^2$, indicating the importance of the $\Delta$ resonance at these momentum transfers.

Cross sections for deep-inelastic electron scattering from liquid deuterium, gaseous He4, and solid Be, C, Al, Ca, Fe, Ag, and Au targets were measured at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center using electrons with energies ranging from 8 to 24.5 GeV. These data cover a range in the Bjorken variable x from 0.089 to 0.8, and in momentum transfer Q2 from 2 to 15 (GeV/c)2. The ratios of cross sections per nucleon (σAσd)is for isoscalar nuclei have been extracted from the data. These ratios are greater than unity in the range 0.1<x<0.3, while for 0.3<x<0.8 they are less than unity and decrease logarithmically with atomic weight A, or linearly with average nuclear density. No Q2 dependence in the ratios was observed over the kinematic range of the data. These results are compared to various theoretical predictions.

We report measurements of the proton elastic form factors, G E p and G M p , extracted from electron scattering in the range 1⩽ Q 2 ⩽3(GeV/ c ) 2 . The uncertainties are <15% in G E p and <3% in G M p . We have measured the proton and deuteron spin structure functions g_1^p and g_1^d in the region of the nucleon resonances for W^2 < 5 GeV^2 and $Q^2\simeq 0.5$ and $Q^2\simeq 1.2$ GeV^2 by inelastically scattering 9.7 GeV polarized electrons off polarized $^{15}NH_3$ and $^{15}ND_3$ targets. We observe significant structure in g_1^p in the resonance region. We have used the present results, together with the deep-inelastic data at higher W^2, to extract $\Gamma(Q^2)\equiv\int_0^1 g_1(x,Q^2) dx$. Measurements of the forward-angle differential cross section for elastic electron-proton scattering were made in the range of momentum transfer from Q2=2.9 to 31.3 (GeV/c)2 using an electron beam at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The data span six orders of magnitude in cross section. Combinded statistical and systematic uncertainties in the cross section measurements ranged from 3.6% at low Q2 to 19% at high Q2. These data have been used to extract the proton magnetic form factor GMp(Q2) and Dirac form factor F1p(Q2) by using form factor scaling. The logarithmic falloff of Q4F1p expected from leading twist predictions of perturbative quantum chromodynamics is consistent with the new data at high Q2. Some nonperturbative and hybrid calculations also agree with our results.

The ratio g1/F1 has been measured over the range 0.03<x<0.6 and 0.3<Q2<10 (GeV/c)2 using deep-inelastic scattering of polarized electrons from polarized protons and deuterons. We find g1/F1 to be consistent with no Q2-dependence at fixed x in the deep-inelastic region Q~2>1 (GeV/c)2. A trend is observed for g1/F1 to decrease at lower Q2. Fits to world data with and without a possible Q2-dependence in g1/F1 are in agreement with the Bjorken sum rule, but Delta_q is substantially less than the quark-parton model expectation.

The proton elastic form factors GEp(Q2) and GMp(Q2) have been extracted for Q2=1.75 to 8.83 (GeV/c)2 via a Rosenbluth separation to ep elastic cross section measurements in the angular range 13°≤θ≤90°. The Q2 range covered more than doubles that of the existing data. For Q2<4 (GeV/c)2, where the data overlap with previous measurements, the total uncertainties have been reduced to < 14% in GEp and < 1.5% in GMp. Results for GEp(Q2) are consistent with the dipole fit GD(Q2)=(1+Q2/0.71)−2, while those for GMp(Q2)/μpGD(Q2) decrease smoothly from 1.05 to 0.92. Deviations from form factor scaling are observed up to 20%. The ratio Q2F2/F1 is observed to approach a constant value for Q2>3 (GeV/c)2. Comparisons are made to vector meson dominance, dimensional scaling, QCD sum rule, diquark, and constituent quark models, none of which fully characterize all the new data.

We report measurements of the proton form factors GEp and GMp extracted from elastic scattering in the range 1≤Q2≤3 (GeV/c)2 with total uncertainties < 15% in GEp and < 3% in GMp. Comparisons are made to theoretical models, including those based on perturbative QCD, vector-meson dominance, QCD sum rules, and diquark constituents in the proton. Anisotropies in the initial energy density distribution of the quark-gluon plasma created in high energy heavy ion collisions lead to anisotropies in the azimuthal distributions of the final-state particles known as collective flow. Fourier harmonic decomposition is used to quantify these anisotropies. The higher-order harmonics can be induced by the same order anisotropies (linear response) or by the combined influence of several lower order anisotropies (nonlinear response) in the initial state. The mixed higher-order anisotropic flow and nonlinear response coefficients of charged particles are measured as functions of transverse momentum and centrality in PbPb collisions at nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}} =$ 2.76 and 5.02 TeV with the CMS detector. The results are compared with viscous hydrodynamic calculations using several different initial conditions, as well as microscopic transport model calculations. None of the models provides a simultaneous description of the mixed higher-order flow harmonics and nonlinear response coefficients.

Based on data samples collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring at center-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s} >$ 4.4 GeV, the processes $e^+e^- \rightarrow \omega \chi_{c1,2}$ are observed for the first time. With an integrated luminosity of $1074 pb^{-1}$ near $\sqrt{s} =$ 4.42 GeV, a significant $\omega \chi_{c2}$ signal is found, and the cross section is measured to be $(20.9 \pm 3.2 \pm 2.5)\pb$. With $567 pb^{-1}$ near $\sqrt{s} =$ 4.6 GeV, a clear $\omega \chi_{c1}$ signal is seen, and the cross section is measured to be $(9.5 \pm 2.1 \pm 1.3) \pb$, while evidence is found for an $\omega \chi_{c2}$ signal. The first errors are statistical and the second are systematic. Due to low luminosity or low cross section at other energies, no significant signals are observed. In the $\omega \chi_{c2}$ cross section, an enhancement is seen around $\sqrt{s} =$ 4.42 GeV. Fitting the cross section with a coherent sum of the $\psi(4415)$ Breit-Wigner function and a phase space term, the branching fraction $\mathcal{B}(\psi(4415)\to\omega\chi_{c2})$ is obtained to be of the order of $10^{-3}$.

We have performed a search for the 1P1 state of charmonium resonantly formed in p¯p annihilations, close to the center of gravity of the 3PJ states. We report results from the study of the J/ψ+π0 and J/ψ+2π final states. We have observed a statistically significant enhancement in the p¯+p→J/ψ+π0 cross section at √s ≃3526.2 MeV. This enhancement has the characteristics of a narrow resonance of mass, total width, and production cross section consistent with what is expected for the 1P1 state. In our search we have found no candidates for the reactions p¯+p→J/ψ+π0+π0 and p¯+p→J/ψ+π++π−.

Using data onvp and\(\bar vp\) charged current interactions from a bubble chamber experiment with BEBC at CERN, the average multiplicities of charged hadrons and pions are determined as functions ofW2 andQ2. The analysis is based on ∼20000 events with incidentv and ∼10000 events with incident\(\bar v\). In addition to the known dependence of the average multiplicity onW2 a weak dependence onQ2 for fixed intervals ofW is observed. ForW>2 GeV andQ2>0.1 GeV2 the average multiplicity of charged hadrons is well described by〈n〉=a1+a2ln(W2/GeV2)+a3ln(Q2/GeV2) witha1=0.465±0.053,a2=1.211±0.021,a3=0.103±0.014 for thevp anda1=−0.372±0.073,a2=1.245±0.028,a3=0.093±0.015 for the\(\bar vp\) reaction.

Differential cross sections for the reaction $\gamma p \to p \pi^0$ have been measured with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) and a tagged photon beam with energies from 0.675 to 2.875 GeV. The results reported here possess greater accuracy in the absolute normalization than previous measurements. They disagree with recent CB-ELSA measurements for the process at forward scattering angles. Agreement with the SAID and MAID fits is found below 1 GeV. The present set of cross sections has been incorporated into the SAID database, and exploratory fits have been extended to 3 GeV. Resonance couplings have been extracted and compared to previous determinations.
