The backward angular distributions obtained in an experiment at the Zero Gradient Synchrotron of Argonne National Laboratory were used to systematically study the energy dependence of the 180° differential cross section for π+p elastic scattering in the center-of-mass energy region from 2159 to 3487 MeV. At each of 38 incident pion momenta between 2.0 and 6.0 GeV/c, a focusing spectrometer and scintillation counter hodoscopes were used to obtain differential cross sections for typically five pion scattering angles from 141° to 173° in the laboratory. Values for dσdΩ at 180° were then obtained by extrapolation. A resonance model and an interference model were used to perform fits to the energy dependence of dσdΩ (180°). Both models led to good fits to our data and yielded values for the masses, widths, parities, and the product of spin and elasticity for the Δ(2200), Δ(2420), Δ(2850), and Δ(3230) resonances. Our data confirm the existence of the Δ(3230) and require the negative-parity Δ(2200).

Elastic π−+p differential cross-section data are presented at the incident-pion momenta 1.72, 1.89, 2.07, 2.27 and 2.46 GeV/c. Resonant behaviour in the coefficients of a Legendre polynomial expansion indicates G- or H-wave resonance. Further analysis using an energy-dependent parametrization of G- and H-waves shows the results to be compatible with the 7−/2 assignment for the , but equally acceptable solutions are obtained with the inclusion of an additional 9+/2 resonance contribution.

A comparison is made of the properties and production mechanisms of the π + ω and K − ω systems produced in the reactions π + p → π + ω p at 4, 5, 8 and 16 GeV/ c and K − p → K − ω p at 10 and 16 GeV/ c . In the π + ω case apeak is observed at 1.23 GeV (the B meson), while the K − ω mass distribution has a threshold enhancement. The cross section of the low mass (<2.0 GeV) π + ω system falls as p lab −2 , while that of the low mass (<2.0 GeV) K − ω system is almost constant with energy, indicating diffractive production of the K − ω system, but not of the πω system. Using a modified version of the Illinois partial-wave analysis program, it is found that the K − ω system is dominantly produced in the J P = 1 + state with small contributions of 0 − and 2 + , mainly by natural parity exchange - as is found for reactions such as K − p → (K − π + π − )p which are predominantly diffractive. For the π + ω system in the B mass region, J P = 1 + states, produced mainly by natural parity exchange are found; the contributions of 0 − P, 1 − P, 2 − P and 2 + D are consistent with zero. The 1 + D state occurs in the π + ω case but not in the K − ω system, nor in the K ππ − system produced in the K − p → K ππ p reaction.

New high-statistics measurements of π + p elastic scattering differential cross sections are presented at 30 momentum points between 1.282 and 2.472 GeV/ c , covering most of the angular distribution outside the forward diffractive peak. The polarization parameter has been measured for π − p elastic scattering in the backward region at 3.5 GeV/ c incident momentum. The experimental set-up consisted of a polarized target in a spectrometer magnet, hodoscopes and wire spark chambers. Data are presented for the range −0.95< u ⩽−0.19 GeV 2 . An isospin analysis has been carried out to separate the I u = 1 2 and I u = 3 2 contributions.
BACKWARD SCATTERING.
We have measured the polarization parameter in π − p→K + Σ − backward scattering at 3.5 GeV/ c incident momentum, in the u -range −0.6< u <0.1 GeV 2 . The apparatus consisted of a polarized target in a spectrometer magnet, counter hodoscopes for time-of-flight measurements, a large water Čerenkov counter for kaon tagging, and wire spark chambers. After identification of the kaons, the reaction was selected by a missing-mass technique. An isospin analysis has been carried out to separate the contributions of the various isospin exchange amplitudes in the u -channel.

We have investigated the final states K ∗0 (890)Σ, K ∗0 (890)Σ 0 and K ∗0 (890) Y 1 ∗0 (1385) produced in π − p interactions at 3.93 GeV/ c . We present the differential cross sections and spin density matrix elements for the resonances as functions of momentum transfer, as well as the gL and Σ 0 polarizations. The Σ 0 polarization is found to be positive and maximal. An amplitude analysis is performed for the K ∗ Λ and K ∗ Σ 0 reactions, and it is found that one natural parity transversity amplitude is dominant for the latter.

We present the results and the analysis of a high-statistics experiment to study A 2 and g production in the reaction π − p→K − K S 0 p at 10 GeV/ c . In each resonance region we perform a moment analysis of the data, and from the moments we determine the production amplitudes as a function of t . We find A 2 production proceeds dominantly by natural-parity (pomeron and f) exchange. We compare A 2 and diffractive K ∗ (1420) production. We find g production proceeds by π and ω exchanges; we determine the g → K K branching ratio.

We perform an amplitude analysis of 10 GeV/ c π − p → K − K S 0 p data as a function of K − K 0 mass from threshold up to 2 GeV. We find that the A 2 and g resonances are produced dominantly by natural and unnatural parity exchange, respectively, and we determine their resonance parameters. We present further evidence for the I = 1, 4 + state A 2 ∗ (1900), in particular by isolating interference effects. The structure of S-wave K − K 0 production suggests an I = 1, 0 + state just below 1300 MeV of width about 250 MeV.

Two (Δ(1238)ππ) enhancements at 1.93 and 2.12 GeV have been observed in an analysis of the invariant-mass spectra of Δ++(1238)π-π0 and Δ++(1238)π-π- from π-p→π-pπ+π-π0 events in 4.5 GeV/c π-p interactions. An enhancement at 2.2 GeV is also seen with a dominant branching to the Δ(1238)ρ system. The 1.93 and 2.12 enhancements seem to be produced mainly through a ρ-meson exchange process. The 2.2 GeV enhancement seems to be produced diffractively and is considered to correspond to theG17(2190) state.

EXPONENTIAL FITS TO T-DISTRIBUTIONS.
We present results on the differential cross-sections for the reactions π + p → K + Σ + (1385) and K − p → π − Σ + (1385) at 10 GeV/ c . For the first time, the same equipment has been used in measuring both reactions, in order to obtain good relative normalization. In the region of low t ( t min to −0.3 (GeV/ c ) 2 ) the two differential cross-sections have similar shape, and show a sharp forward dip indicating a dominant helicity flip contribution. However, the magnitudes of the cross-sections are significantly different, indicating substantial exchange degeneracy breaking. We find the ratio of the integrated cross-sections for the reactions K − p → π − Σ + (1385) and π + p → K + Σ + (1385) over the range −0.3 < t ′ < 0.0 (GeV/ c ) 2 to be 2.0 ± 0.2.

The experimental results are presented for ratios of ν-meson inclusive differential cross sections in 10.5 GeV/ c π + p, π + D and π + A collisions, R D/p =(d σ /d x F )( π + D → η X)/ (d σ /d x F ) π + p→ η X), R A =(d σ /d x F )( π + D→ η X) in the beam fragmentation region. The results are based on the statistics of ≈ 5 × 10 4 detected η → 2 γ decays. It is shown that the power α in the parametrisation R A ≈ A α ( xf ) does not change significantly with x F and its mean value is 0.50±0.02. The lower limit is obtained for the effective coefficient with string tension in the colour string model, κ ⩾ 3 GeV/fm. The observed growth of R A with x F can be explained by an assumption of a neutron halo with the factor H ≈ 4 in the nuclei.

We present results on an amplitude analysis of the K + K − system produced in the reaction π − p→K + K − n from threshold up to 2.2 GeV. The branching ratios of f 0 and f' to K K have been determined. In the low mass region of the K K system the observation of an S-wave enhancement at 1.3 GeV and the interference of the f 0 -A 2 -f' mesons are studied. We observe a 3 − structure in the mass region of 1.7 GeV which is consistent with g 0 production. With this interpretation the branching ratio g→ K K has been determined. Evidence for a new structure in the J p = 2 + wave around 1.8 GeV with a width of ∼200 MeV is presented.

We present the differential cross sections and polarizations over a large t range and at two momenta, 7.0 and 10.1 GeV/ c . The differential cross sections as a function of t are shown for the first time to cross over. Going from the lower to the higher momentum, the differences in cross section between the two reactions diminish at low | t | by about a factor 2. We find large polarizations of opposite sign for the two reactions. The momentum dependence, presented in the form of α eff ( t ) for the t range 0 to −2 (GeV/ c ) 2 , is compared with the expectations from the K ∗ −K ∗∗ trajectory.

We present a series of numerical and statistical techniques for interpolating and combining ("amalgamating") data from meson-nucleon scattering experiments. These techniques have been extensively applied to πp elastic and charge-exchange differential-cross-section and polarization data in the resonance region. The amalgamation is done by fitting a momentum- and angle-dependent interpolating surface to the data over a moderately narrow momentum range, typically ∼150 MeV/c, using the interpolating surface to shift data in a narrower central momentum region into fixed angular bins at a predetermined central momentum, and then statistically combining the data in each bin. The fitting procedure takes into account normalization errors, momentum calibration errors, momentum resolution, electromagnetic corrections, threshold structure, and inconsistencies among the data. The full covariance matrix of the amalgamated data is calculated, including contributions of statistical error, systematic error, and interpolation error. Techniques are presented for extracting from the covariance matrix information on the collective statistical fluctuations which correlate the errors of the amalgamated data. These fluctuations are described in terms of "correlation vectors" which facilitate the use of the amalgamated data as input for resonance-region phenomenology.

The joint decay distribution statistical tensors for the reaction π + p→ ϱ 0 Δ ++ have been measured as a function of t at 3.75 GeV/ c . A description is given of an experimental study of exchange degeneracy (EXD) in hypercharge-exchange reactions using the line-reversed partners π + p→K + Σ + (K − p→ π − Σ + ) and π + p→ K + Σ + (1385) (K − p→ π − Σ + (1385)) at incident momenta of 7.0 and 10.1 GeV/ c . Both pairs of reaction were measured in the same apparatus, with particular care being taken to minimize relative normalization errors. For the Σ production reactions we present high statistics measurements of the differential cross sections and polarizations from t ′=0 to large t . The general trends of the data agree with naive expectations from weak EXD. The cross-section difference in the extreme forward direction at the higher momentum is consistent with zero and there is a general reduction in the cross-section differences going from the lower to the higher momentum. The polarizations are approximately equal in magnitude and of opposite sign between the two reactions. On the other hand, the data do not agree with the detailed predictions of EXD. The slope for the positive reaction is systematically steeper in the forward region than for the negative reaction and there is a complex s and t dependence for the cross-section differences including a cross-over at t ⋍ −0.8( GeV /c) 2 . For the Σ(1385) production reactions, we present differential cross-section measurements in the forward region (| t |<0.3(GeV/ c ) 2 ). The cross-section differences are substantial and essentially constant over the s and t ranges studied.

We have investigated the ρ-meson production mechanism in the three reactions π±p→ρ±p and π−p→ρ0n at 3.9 GeV/c (s=8.2 GeV2) using the prism-plot technique. Differential cross sections at all momentum transfers are presented. A significant backward peak has been found in all three reactions. The differential cross sections for these backward peaks are given and are compared with the equivalent pion elastic and charge-exchange cross sections in the backward direction. Using a linear combination of the three differential cross sections we have isolated the I=0 exchange contribution in the forward direction. This differential cross section has a zero at −t=0.45 (GeV/c)2 and is fitted by the dual absorptive model of Harari with an interaction radius of ∼ 1.2 F. The total I=0 cross section is calculated and compared with similarly determined cross sections at higher momenta. An analysis of the properties of the other possible spin-parity exchanges is also presented.

Experimental results on the reaction π − p → K ∗0 (890) X 0 at 10 GeV /c are presented. By using the K ∗0 polarization measurements, a detailed study of the production has been carried out as a function of the missing mass squared and of the four-momentum trasnfer squared to the K ∗0 . We have studied backward baryon and meson production in π−p→pπ+π−π− at 8.0 GeV/c using a streamer chamber triggered by the detection of a fast forward proton. Our data sample (1227 events) displays prominent N*ρ and N*f quasi-two-body production. These states are investigated with regard to the peripheral nature of the production mechanism and sequential decay of the excited baryon and meson systems. The quasi-two-body production of N*ρ and N*f intermediate states is consistent with u-channel proton exchange as the dominant production mechanism. In the π+π−π− mass distribution we observe a 3- to 4- standard-deviation enhancement at M3π=1897±17 MeV/c2 with full width at half maximum = 110 ± 82 MeV/c2, but find no but find no evidence for backward A1 or A2 production. We have studied backward meson and baryon production in π−p→nπ+π− at 8 GeV/c using a streamer chamber triggered by the detection of the interaction of the neutron in thick-plate optical spark chambers. We study the differential and total backward cross sections for these states and the decay angular distributions of the resonances. Differential cross sections are presented for pion-proton elastic scattering in the angular range −0.6≳cosθc.m.≳−0.98 at 15 incident π+ momenta from 2.18−5.25 GeVc. The angular distributions rise steeply near 180° at all momenta. For laboratory momenta ≳2.75 GeVc they show a minimum at u≈−0.17 (GeVc)2 and a broad maximum near u≈−0.6 (GeVc)2. When the data are plotted versus s, for fixed u, a strong signal from the Δ(2420) resonance is observed. The data are compared with a direct-channel resonance model and with a Regge model which considers the exchange of the Nα, Nγ, and Δδ Regge trajectories. The qualitative success of both the direct-channel resonance model and the Regge model lends support to the concept of duality.

A quasi-two-body model based on one-particle exchange and diffraction dissociation has been fitted to data from π−p interactions at 3.9 and 11.9 GeV/c in which a nucleon and 3-6 pions are present in the final state. It is used to estimate partial cross sections for the contributing interaction mechanisms and the dominant resonances which are produced at these energies. The energy dependence of the cross sections is examined and found to be consistent with expected behavior, and reactions are compared and found to agree with simple factorization.

We present differential and total cross sections for the reactions (1) π−p→n+π0 and (2) π−p→n+η0(η0→2γ) and total cross sections for the reactions (3) π−p→n+kπ0 (k=2, 3, 4, and 5) and (4) π−p→all neutrals for eighteen values of beam momentum in the interval 1.3 to 4.0 GeV/c. The angular distributions for (1) and (2) have been analyzed in terms of expansions in Legendre polynomials, the coefficients for which are also given.

We present cross sections and density-matrix elements from a high-statistics study of the reactions π−p→ρ0n, K−p→K¯*0(890)n, and K+n→K*0(890)p, at 3, 4, and 6 GeV/c and four-momentum transfer squared to the recoil nucleon −t<~0.9 GeV2. The experiment was carried out at the Argonne Zero Gradient Synchrotron using the effective-mass spectrometer. In the same experiment, we have measured the ρ−ω interference cross sections by comparison of the two reactions π−p→π−π+n and π+n→π+π−p, to which the interference terms contribute with opposite signs. We examine the systematics of ρ0 production: In the s channel we find little shrinkage with energy of the helicity-0 cross sections, which are presumably dominated by π exchange; the helicity-1 cross sections exhibit considerable shrinkage for unnatural-parity exchange, and antishrinkage for natural-parity exchange. The K*0 and K¯*0 production observables exhibit significant differences, especially in the helicity-1 states. These differences are due to interference between even- and odd-G-parity exchange amplitudes and they are related by SU(3) symmetry to ρ−ω interference effects and to the ρ0 and ω production observables. It is shown that exchange-degeneracy-breaking effects satisfy SU(3) symmetry and can be explained qualitatively in the frame-work of SU(3)-symmetric, strongly absorbed Regge-pole models. The results of our amplitude analysis are compared with previous phenomenological analyses and model predictions.

We report a study of 20 exclusive reactions measured at the AGS at 5.9 GeV/c incident momentum, 90° center of mass. This experiment confirms the strong quark flow dependence of two-body hadron-hadron scattering at large angle. At 9.9 GeV/c an upper limit had been set for the ratio of cross sections for (p¯p→p¯p)(pp→pp) at 90° c.m., with the ratio less than 4%. The present experiment was performed at lower energy to gain sensitivity, but was still within the fixed angle scaling region. A ratio R(p¯ppp)≈140 was measured at 5.9 GeV/c, 90° c.m. in comparison to a ratio near 1.7 for small angle scattering. In addition, many other reactions were measured, often for the first time at 90° c.m. in the scaling region, using beams of π±, K±, p, and p¯ on a hydrogen target. There are similar large differences in cross sections for other reactions: R(K−p→π+Σ−K−p→π−Σ+)≈112, for example. The relative magnitudes of the different cross sections are consistent with the dominance of quark interchange in these 90° reactions, and indicate that pure gluon exchange and quark-antiquark annihilation diagrams are much less important. The angular dependence of several elastic cross sections and the energy dependence at a fixed angle of many of the reactions are also presented.
