Inclusive production of $\mathrm{D^{*\pm}}$ mesons in two-photon collisions was measured by the L3 experiment at LEP. The data were collected at a centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} = 189$ GeV with an integrated luminosity of $176.4 \mathrm{pb^{-1}}$. Differential cross sections of the process $\mathrm{e^+e^- \to D^{*\pm} X}$ are determined as functions of the transverse momentum and pseudorapidity of the $\mathrm{D^{*\pm}}$ mesons in the kinematic region 1 GeV $< p_{T}^{\mathrm{D^*}} < 5 $ GeV and $\mathrm{|\eta^{D^*}|} < 1.4$. The cross section integrated over this phase space domain is measured to be $132 \pm 22(stat.) \pm 26(syst.)$ pb. The differential cross sections are compared with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations.

We report the first measurement of the cross section for Z boson pair production at a hadron collider. This result is based on a data sample corresponding to 1.9 fb-1 of integrated luminosity from ppbar collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. In the llll channel, we observe three ZZ candidates with an expected background of 0.096^{+0.092}_{-0.063} events. In the llnunu channel, we use a leading-order calculation of the relative ZZ and WW event probabilities to discriminate between signal and background. In the combination of llll and llnunu channels, we observe an excess of events with a probability of $5.1\times 10^{-6}$ to be due to the expected background. This corresponds to a significance of 4.4 standard deviations. The measured cross section is sigma(ppbar -> ZZ) = 1.4^{+0.7}_{-0.6} (stat.+syst.) pb, consistent with the standard model expectation.

The reactions e + e − → e + e − e + e − and e + e − → e + e − μ + μ − , in a single tag configuration, are studied at LEP with the L3 detector. The data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 93.7 pb −1 at s =91 GeV. Differential cross sections are measured for 1.4 GeV 2 ≤Q 2 ≤7.6 GeV 2 . The leptonic photon structure function F γ 2 and azimuthal correlations are measured for e + e − → e + e − μ + μ − . The related structure functions F γ A and F γ B , which originate from interference terms of the scattering amplitudes, are determined for the first time.

We present results obtained from a study of the structure of hadronic events recorded by the L3 detector at various centre-of-mass energies. The distributions of event shape variables and the energy dependence of their mean values are measured from 30GeV to 189GeV and compared with various QCD models. The energy dependence of the moments of event shape variables is used to test a power law ansatz for the non-perturbative component. We obtain a universal value of the non-perturbative parameter alpha_0 = 0.537 +/- 0.073. From a comparison with resummed O(alpha_s^2) QCD calculations, we determine the strong coupling constant at each of the selected energies. The measurements demonstrate the running of alpha_s as expected in QCD with a value of alpha_s(m_Z) = 0.1215 +/- 0.0012 (exp) +/- 0.0061 (th).

The cross section of charm production in γγ collisions σ(e + e − →e + e − c c ̄ X) is measured at LEP with the L3 detector at centre-of-mass energies from 91 GeV to 183 GeV. Charmed hadrons are identified by electrons and muons from semileptonic decays. The direct process γγ→c c ̄ is found to be insufficient to describe the data. The measured cross section values and event distributions require contributions from resolved processes, which are sensitive to the gluon density in the photon.

We present a new measurement of the $B^+$ meson differential cross section $d\sigma/d p_T$ at $\sqrt{s}=1960$ GeV. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 739pb$^{-1}$ collected with the upgraded CDF detector (CDF II) at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. $B^+$ candidates are reconstructed through the decay $B^+ \to J/\psi K^+$, with $J/\psi \to \mu^+ \mu^-$. The integrated cross section for producing $B^+$ mesons with $p_T \geq 6$ GeV/c and $|y| \leq 1$ is measured to be $2.78 \pm 0.24 \mu$b

We have studied the process e+e− → nγ (n ≥ 2) at an average center-of-mass energy of 133 GeV using the L3 detector at LEP. For an integrated luminosity of 4.95 pb−1 we find one γγγγ(γ) final state with only hard photons. The rates of both γγγ and γγ events are consistent with QED expectations. The cross section of the reaction e+e− → γγ(γ) in the polar range 16° < θγ < 164° is measured to be 22.6 ± 2.2 pb. Decays into photons of narrow scalar resonances with masses between 90 and 130 GeV are not observed. The observation of the event with four energetic photons is consistent with QED although the kinematic configuration of the photons is atypical.

We present a search for new particles whose decays produce two jets (dijets) using proton-antiproton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.13 fb-1 collected with the CDF II detector. The measured dijet mass spectrum is found to be consistent with next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD predictions, and no significant evidence of new particles is found. We set upper limits at the 95% confidence level on cross sections times the branching fraction for the production of new particles decaying into dijets with both jets having a rapidity magnitude |y| < 1. These limits are used to determine the mass exclusions for the excited quark, axigluon, flavor-universal coloron, E6 diquark, color-octet technirho, W', and Z'.

We present a measurement of the shapes of b-jets using 300 pb-1 of data obtained with the upgraded Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF II) in p pbar collisions at center of mass energy sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV. This measurement covers a wide transverse momentum range, from 52 to 300 GeV/c. Samples of heavy-flavor enhanced jets together with inclusive jets are used to extract the average shapes of b-jets. The b-jets are expected to be broader than inclusive jets. Moreover, b-jets containing a single b-quark are expected to be narrower than those containing a b bbar pair from gluon splitting. The measured b-jet shapes are found to be significantly broader than expected from the PYTHIA and HERWIG Monte Carlo simulations. This effect may arise from an underestimation of the fraction of b-jets originating from gluon splitting in these simulations.

A measurement of the $\bjet$ production cross section is presented for events containing a $Z$ boson produced in $p\bar{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.96$ TeV, using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2 fb$^{-1}$ collected by the CDF II detector at the Tevatron. $Z$ bosons are selected in the electron and muon decay modes. Jets are considered with transverse energy $E_T>20$ GeV and pseudorapidity $|\eta|<1.5$ and are identified as $\bjets$ using a secondary vertex algorithm. The ratio of the integrated $Z+\bjet$ cross section to the inclusive $Z$ production cross section is measured to be $3.32 \pm 0.53 {\rm (stat.)} \pm 0.42 {\rm (syst.)}\times 10^{-3}$. This ratio is also measured differentially in jet $E_T$, jet $\eta$, $Z$-boson transverse momentum, number of jets, and number of $\bjets$. The predictions from leading order Monte Carlo generators and next-to-leading-order QCD calculations are found to be consistent with the measurements within experimental and theoretical uncertainties.

From a maximum likelihood fit to the single photon cross section, the Z decay width into invisible particles is measured to be Γ inv =498±12 (stat) ±12 (sys) MeV . Using the Standard Model couplings of neutrinos to the Z, the number of light neutrino species is determined to be N ν =2.98±0.07(stat)±0.07(sys).

Using the data recorded with the L3 detector at LEP, we study the process e + e − → μ + μ − ( γ ) for events with hard initial-state photon radiation. The effective centre-of-mass energies of the muons range from 50 GeV to 86 GeV. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 103.5 pb −1 and yields 293 muon-pair events with a hard photon along the beam direction. The events are used to determine the cross sections and the forward-backward charge asymmetries at centre-of-mass energies below the Z resonance.

We measure the ratio of cross section times branching fraction, $R_p \equiv \sigma_{\chi_{c2}} {\cal B}(\chi_{c2} \to J/\psi \gamma)/ \sigma_{\chi_{c1}} {\cal B}(\chi_{c1} \to J/\psi \gamma)$, in 1.1 fb$^{-1}$ of $p\bar{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 1.96 TeV. This measurement covers the kinematic range $p_T(J/\psi)>4.0$ GeV/$c$, $|\eta(J/\psi)| < 1.0$, and $p_T(\gamma)>1.0$ GeV/$c$. For events due to prompt processes, we find $R_p = 0.395\pm0.016(stat.)\pm0.015(sys.)$. This result represents a significant improvement in precision over previous measurements of prompt $\chi_{c1,2}$ hadroproduction.

A study of neutral-current four-fermion processes is performed using a data sample corresponding to 55.3 pb −1 of integrated luminosity collected by the L3 detector at LEP at an average centre-of-mass energy of 183 GeV. The neutral-current four-fermion cross sections for final states with a pair of charged leptons plus jets and with four charged leptons are measured to be consistent with the Standard Model predictions. Events with fermion pair masses close to the Z boson mass are selected in all observable final states and the ZZ production cross section is measured to be σ ZZ =0.30 +0.22 +0.07 −0.16 −0.03 pb, in agreement with the Standard Model expectation. No evidence for the existence of anomalous triple gauge boson ZZZ and ZZ γ couplings is found and limits on these couplings are set.

Single W boson production in electron-positron collisions is studied with the L3 detector at LEP. The data sample collected at a centre-of-mass energy of \sqrt{s} = 188.7GeV corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 176.4pb^-1. We report on a study of radiative Bhabha and quasi-real Compton scattering at centre-of-mass energies between 50 GeV and 170 GeV, and 20 GeV and 140 GeV, respectively, using the L3 detector at LEP. The analysis is based on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 232.2 pb −1 . A total of 2856 radiative Bhabha and 4641 Compton scattering events are collected. Total and differential cross sections for both reactions are presented and found to be in good agreement with QED expectations. New measurements at a centre-of-mass energy s ≃183 GeV of the hadronic photon structure function F γ 2 ( x ) in the Q 2 interval, 9 GeV 2 ≤ Q 2 ≤30 GeV 2 , are presented. The data, collected in 1997 with the L3 detector, correspond to an integrated luminosity of 51.9 pb −1 . Combining with the data taken at a centre-of-mass energy of 91 GeV, the evolution of F γ 2 with Q 2 is measured in the Q 2 range from 1.2 GeV 2 to 30 GeV 2 . F γ 2 shows a linear growth with ln Q 2 ; the value of the slope α −1 d F γ 2 ( Q 2 )/dln Q 2 is measured in two x bins from 0.01 to 0.2 and is somewhat higher than predicted.

We present a measurement of the inclusive jet cross section in p-pbar collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV based on data collected by the CDF II detector with an integrated luminosity of 1.13 fb^-1. The measurement was made using the cone-based Midpoint jet clustering algorithm in the rapidity region of |y|<2.1. The results are consistent with next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD predictions based on recent parton distribution functions (PDFs), and are expected to provide increased precision in PDFs at high parton momentum fraction x. The results are also compared to the recent inclusive jet cross section measurement using the k_T jet clustering algorithm, and we find that the ratio of the cross sections measured with the two algorithms is in agreement with theoretical expectations over a large range of jet transverse momentum and rapidity.

Measurements of the two-photon interaction e + e − → e + e − + hadrons at s ≃ 91 GeV and s ≃ 183 GeV are presented. The cross-section of γ ∗ γ ∗ collisions has been measured at 〈 Q 2 〉 = 3.5 GeV 2 and 〈 Q 2 〉 = 14 GeV 2 . The data agree well with predictions based on perturbative QCD, while the Quark Parton Model alone is insufficient to describe the data.

We present the first observation of exclusive $e^+e^-$ production in hadron-hadron collisions, using $p\bar{p}$ collision data at \mbox{$\sqrt{s}=1.96$ TeV} taken by the Run II Collider Detector at Fermilab, and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of \mbox{532 pb$^{-1}$}. We require the absence of any particle signatures in the detector except for an electron and a positron candidate, each with transverse energy {$E_T>5$ GeV} and pseudorapidity {$|\eta|<2$}. With these criteria, 16 events are observed compared to a background expectation of {$1.9\pm0.3$} events. These events are consistent in cross section and properties with the QED process \mbox{$p\bar{p} \to p + e^+e^- + \bar{p}$} through two-photon exchange. The measured cross section is \mbox{$1.6^{+0.5}_{-0.3}\mathrm{(stat)}\pm0.3\mathrm{(syst)}$ pb}. This agrees with the theoretical prediction of {$1.71 \pm 0.01$ pb}.

We have studied the structure of hadronic events with a hard, isolated photon in the final state (e + e − → Z → hadrons + γ) in the 3.6 million hadronic events collected with the L3 detector at centre-of-mass energies around 91 GeV. The centre-of-mass energy of the hadronic system is in the range 30 GeV to 86 GeV. Event shape variables have been measured at these reduced centre-of-mass energies and have been compared with the predictions of different QCD Monte Carlo programs. The event shape variables and the energy dependence of their mean values are well reproduced by QCD models. We fit distributions of several global event shape variables to resummed O (α s 2 ) calculations to determine the strong coupling constant α s over a wide range of energies. We find that the strong coupling constant α s decreases with increasing energy, as expected from QCD.
