Differential cross sections for the reaction $\gamma p \to p \pi^0$ have been measured with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) and a tagged photon beam with energies from 0.675 to 2.875 GeV. The results reported here possess greater accuracy in the absolute normalization than previous measurements. They disagree with recent CB-ELSA measurements for the process at forward scattering angles. Agreement with the SAID and MAID fits is found below 1 GeV. The present set of cross sections has been incorporated into the SAID database, and exploratory fits have been extended to 3 GeV. Resonance couplings have been extracted and compared to previous determinations.

The differential cross sections \sigma_0=\sigma_T+\epsilon \sigma_L, \sigma_{LT}, and \sigma_{TT} of \pi^0 electroproduction from the proton were measured from threshold up to an additional center of mass energy of 40 MeV, at a value of the photon four-momentum transfer of Q^2= 0.05 GeV^2/c^2 and a center of mass angle of \theta=90^\circ. By an additional out-of-plane measurement with polarized electrons \sigma_{LT'} was determined. This showed for the first time the cusp effect above the \pi^+ threshold in the imaginary part of the s-wave. The predictions of Heavy Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory are in disagreement with these data. On the other hand, the data are somewhat better predicted by the MAID phenomenological model and are in good agreement with the dynamical model DMT.

At the Bonn 2.5 GeV electron synchrotron we have measured the differential cross section of the reaction γp→π0p at a pion CM angle of 170° and at photon energiesKγ between 0.6 and 1.8 GeV. In comparison to previous measurements the accuracy of the data was improved substantially. For the first time in neutral pion photoproduction a cusp structure at the η-threshold has been confirmed [1].

We report the measurement of the differential cross section of the reaction γ +p→π0 +p at a photon energy of 1.4 GeV and pion c.m. angles between 60 and 175 degrees. The angular distribution confirms the simple quark model prediction of a pure magnetic excitation of theF37 (1950) resonance.

At the electron accelerator ELSA a linearly polarised tagged photon beam is produced by coherent bremsstrahlung off a diamond crystal. Orientation and energy range of the linear polarisation can be deliberately chosen by accurate positioning of the crystal with a goniometer. The degree of polarisation is determined by the form of the scattered electron spectrum. Good agreement between experiment and expectations on basis of the experimental conditions is obtained. Polarisation degrees of P = 40% are typically achieved at half of the primary electron energy. The determination of P is confirmed by measuring the beam asymmetry, \Sigma, in pi^0 photoproduction and a comparison of the results to independent measurements using laser backscattering.

Angular distributions of the target symmetry for the reaction γ + p → π 0 + p have been measured at the Bonn 2.5 GeV Electron Synchrotron at pion c.m. angles between 13° and 63° and photon energies of 1.0 and 1.1 GeV. The π 0 mesons were detected by their two decay photons with total absorption lead-glass Čerenkov counters. Butanol was used as target material in a continuous flow 3 He cryostat operating at 0.5 K and 25 kG. The π 0 counting rate from free protons in the butanol target was derived from the measurements of the differential cross section on hydrogen. The data are compared with data of other laboratories and the results of two recent partial-wave analyses.

Large-angle cross sections for γd→π0d are systematically measured in the photon energy range between 500 and 1000 MeV. A good fit is obtained by use of a Glauber-model calculation which includes the dibaryon resonances F33(2.26) and G41(2.51), but the fit has an unusual nature in the role of resonance and nonresonance contributions.

Cross sections for π0 photoproduction from hydrogen in the backward direction have been measured for photon energies of 6, 8, 12, and 18 GeV. The range of momentum transfer covered in these measurements is −1 (GeVc)2<u<0(GeVc)2, dσdu is found to have a backward peak and decreases with energy as s−3.0±0.2. Photoproduction of η0 and ρ0 mesons has also been observed.

We measured the π0 photoproduction differential cross section at 180° for a range of incident photon energies between 650 and 1750 MeV. The cross sections are dominated by the D13(1525), D15(1688), and F37(1920) resonances.

Cross sections for the reaction γ+p→π0+p for incident gamma-ray energies of 2.0 to 5.0 GeV and for baryon four-momentum transfers squared of 0.5 to 4.0 (GeV/c)2 are presented. The results are compared with theoretical predictions based on Reggeized vector-meson exchange.

The cross section for photoproduction of π0 mesons was measured at a photon energy of 3 GeV and squared four-momentum transfer (t) of -0.1 to -1.2 (GeV/c)2 using plane-polarized photons. The asymmetry was found to be consistent with +1.0 for t values above -0.4 and below -1.1. For −0.4<~t<~−1.0 there is a dip in the asymmetry and at t=−0.6 it drops to 0.55 ± 0.15. This result precludes a simple Regge model with ω0 and B; a theoretical description requires Regge cuts or an ω′ exchange.

We have measured the cross sections at 90° c.m. for π± and π0 photoproduction with polarized photons. The photon energies ranged from 0.8 to 2.2 GeV. We compare the resonant "bumps" in the cross section with theoretical models. The measured asymmetry agrees with a quark-model calculation though the predicted cross sections are low.

Measurements are presented of the recoil-proton polarization for π0 photoproduction angles near 64° in the c.m. system. The steep angular dependence observed by others at lower energies persists to at least 1500 MeV, and the polarization crosses through zero near 63° over the entire 900-1600-MeV energy interval. Summary fits are made to available recoil-proton polarization data, 950-1250 MeV, and are found to require terms of order cos3θ, but no higher.

The photoproduction of neutral pions from hydrogen has been studied by counting the recoil protons with a magnetic spectrometer and scintillation counters. The process has been studied between photon energies of 260 and 450 Mev and between center-of-momentum pion angles of 70° and 153°. The excitation functions show a resonance type shape with maxima at about 320 Mev. Angular distributions are analyzed in the form A+Bcosθ+Ccos2θ in the center-of-momentum system. The coefficient B, which gives the front-back asymmetry, is small at all energies; and the ratio −AC is 1.22±0.10 at all energies between 295 and 450 Mev. The maximum cross section at 90° in the c.m. system is 26×10−30 cm2/steradian for 320-Mev photons. The total cross section divided by the square of the c.m. photon wavelength has a maximum near 340 Mev, and drops by nearly a factor of two at 450 Mev. These results are consistent with magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole absorption leading to a resonant state of the pion-nucleon system of angular momentum 32 and isotopic spin 32.

This paper reports measurements of the differential cross section for photoproduction of neutral pions in hydrogen at energies 300, 400, and 450 Mev, at center-of-momentum angles of 70° to 150°. One decay photon from the neutral pion is observed in coincidence with the recoil proton, whose energy and angle are measured to define the photon energy. The results obtained by this method are in good agreement with more accurate measurements obtained recently by the method of observing only the recoil proton.

Angular distributions for π0 photoproduction from hydrogen at energies between 660 and 800 MeV and proton center-of-mass angles from 0° to 140° have been measured and analyzed. Some variation from a pure d32 state is seen in the resonance region. A possible high-momentum-transfer enhancement of the cross section is discussed.
