Measurements of the polarization parameters and angular distributions are reported for π±p elastic scattering at 100 GeV/c and for pp elastic scattering at 100- and 300-GeV/c incident momentum. The π±p data cover the kinematic range 0.18≤−t≤1.10 GeV2 and are in agreement with current Regge-model predictions. The pp data cover the kinematic range 0.15≤−t≤1.10 GeV2 and 0.15≤−t≤2.00 GeV2 at 100 and 300 GeV/c, respectively, and are found to be consistent with absorption-model predictions.

Accelerating polarized protons to 22 GeV/c at the Brookhaven Alternating Gradient Synchro- tron required both extensive hardware modifications and a difficult commissioning process. We had to overcome 45 strong depolarizing resonances to maintain polarization up to 22 GeV/c in this strong-focusing synchrotron. At 18.5 GeV/c we measured the analyzing power A and the spin-spin correlation parameter Ann in large- P⊥2 proton-proton elastic scattering, using the polarized proton beam and a polarized proton target. We also obtained a high-precision measurement of A at P⊥2=0.3 (GeV/c)2 at 13.3 GeV/c. At 18.5 GeV/c we found that Ann=(-2±16)% at P⊥2=4.7 (GeV/c)2, where it was about 60% near 12 GeV at the Argonne Zero Gradient Synchrotron. This sharp change suggests that spin-spin forces may have a strong and unexpected energy dependence at high P⊥2.
Interactions initiated by 3-Bev protons of the Brookhaven Cosmotron were studied by photoemulsion technique. With appropriate criteria, 115 events are attributed to interactions of the incident beam protons with hydrogen nuclei (∼55%) and with bound protons of other nuclei (∼45%). A detailed analysis allowed the subdivision of the 115 events in categories, according to the number of π mesons (N>~0) produced in the collision. The ratio of elastic scattering to the total number of events was estimated to be σelσtotal=0.20−0.07+0.04. The observed cross section for pure elastic scattering is σel=8.9±1.0 mb. The percentages of single, double, triple, and quadruple π-meson production are respectively: 34−20+22; 35.6−23+20; 9.6−4+6; ∼1.0+3.5. Among the 20 most probable cases of single π-meson production—the estimated ratio of π+ to π0 is σπ+σπ0=5.3−1.4+0.3. The experimental results are not in agreement with the Fermi statistical-model theory (in particular the lower limit for the experimental ratio of triple to single production is given by σ3σ1>∼110 in contrast with the predicted ratio σ3σ1=167) but are not inconsistent with the Peaslee excited-state-model theory.
The properties of the diffractive peak observed in the mass spectra of systems recoiling against observed high-momentum protons emerging from pp collisions at the CERN ISR have been investigated. The cross sections in this peak have been found to have a steep t dependence which flattens out as | t | increases. The high mass side of the peak varies approximately as 1/ M 2 (where M is the missing mass of the recoiling system) and scales well in terms of the variable M 2 / s . The position of the maximum has been observed to move to lower values of M 2 / s as the kinematic boundary of this variable decreases with increasing s . The measured cross sections, integrated up to M 2 / s =0.05, rise by (15±5)% over the s range 549 to 1464 GeV 2 .

In this paper we present tables of absolute differential cross sections of elastic pp scattering together with the values of the slope parameter B and the real-part parameter α, where B= d d t In dσ d t α= Re A(0) Im A(0) and A (0) is the amplitude of elastic pp scattering at t = 0. The cross-section data have been obtained at the Serpukhov accelerator from 8 to 70 GeV in the | t |-range 0.0007 − 0.12 (GeV/ c ) 2 .

Proton-proton elastic differential cross sections have been measured for incident laboratory momenta of 600-1800 MeVc and c.m. angles of 5°-90°. The data span, in a single experiment, the intermediate energy region from isotropic differential cross sections at lower energies to the development of a clear diffraction peak at higher energies. Parameters for phenomenological formulations derived from the experimental results are presented.

Excitation functions AN(pp,Θc.m.) of the analyzing power in pp→ elastic scattering have been measured with a polarized atomic hydrogen target for projectile momenta pp between 1000 and 3300 MeV/ c. The experiment was performed for scattering angles 30°≤Θc.m.≤90° using the recirculating beam of the proton storage ring COSY during acceleration. The resulting excitation functions and angular distributions of high internal consistency have significant impact on the recent phase shift solution SAID SP99, in particular, on the spin triplet phase shifts between 1000 and 1800 MeV, and demonstrate the limited predictive power of single-energy phase shift solutions at these energies.

Differential cross-sections for proton-proton elastic scattering have been measured covering the angular range from 50° to 90° c.m. at twelve incident momenta from 1.3 to 3.0 GeV/c. The angular distributions are quite smooth, but there is evidence of structure in the energy dependence of fixed-angle cross-sections at |t| ∼ 1 (GeV)2.

The spin-dependent observables N 0 nkk , D 0 s ″0 k and K 0 s ″ k 0 in pp elastic scattering were measured at 11 energies between 0.84 and 2.7 GeV using the SATURNE II polarized proton beam and the Saclay frozen-spin polarized target. The beam and target polarizations were oriented longitudinally. Precession of the recoil-particle spin in the target holding field introduces small contributions from other parameters. The present data agree with the few previously existing measurements. Below 1.3 GeV our data are compared with the predictions of the Saclay-Geneva phase-shift analysis. The new results will considerably affect the phase-shift analysis solutions and will contribute to their extension towards higher energies.
Data is given as a combination of the N(ONLL) and KLL parameters. The relative factor BETA is given for each data point.
A polarized proton beam extracted from SATURNE II and the Saclay polarized proton target were used to measure the rescattering observables$K_{onno}$and
