Photoproduction reactions occur when the electromagnetic field of a relativistic heavy ion interacts with another heavy ion. The STAR collaboration presents a measurement of rho^0 and direct pi^+pi^- photoproduction in ultra-peripheral relativistic heavy ion collisions at sqrt(s_{NN})=200 GeV. We observe both exclusive photoproduction and photoproduction accompanied by mutual Coulomb excitation. We find a coherent cross-section of sigma(AuAu) -> Au^*Au^*rho^0 = 530 pm 19 (stat.) pm 57 (syst.) mb, in accord with theoretical calculations based on a Glauber approach, but considerably below the predictions of a color dipole model. The rho^0 transverse momentum spectrum (p_{T}^2) is fit by a double exponential curve including both coherent and incoherent coupling to the target nucleus/ we find sigma_{inc}/sigma_{coh} = 0.29 pm 0.03 (stat.) pm 0.08 (syst.). The ratio of direct pi^+pi^- to rho^0 production is comparable to that observed in gamma p collisions at HERA, and appears to be independent of photon energy. Finally, the measured rho^0 spin helicity matrix elements agree within errors with the expected s-channel helicity conservation.

We have measured the cross section for production of ψ and ψ′ in p¯ and π− interactions with Be, Cu, and W targets in experiment E537 at Fermilab. The measurements were performed at 125 GeV/c using a forward dimuon spectrometer in a closed geometry configuration. The gluon structure functions of the p¯ and π− have been extracted from the measured dσdxF spectra of the produced ψ's. From the p¯W data we obtain, for p¯, xG(x)=(2.15±0.7)[1−x](6.83±0.5)[1+(5.85±0.95)x]. In the π− case, we obtain, from the W and the Be data separately, xG(x)=(1.49±0.03)[1−x](1.98±0.06) (for π−W), xG(x)=(1.10±0.10)[1−x](1.20±0.20) (for π−Be).

Differential cross sections for the reaction $\gamma p \to p \pi^0$ have been measured with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) and a tagged photon beam with energies from 0.675 to 2.875 GeV. The results reported here possess greater accuracy in the absolute normalization than previous measurements. They disagree with recent CB-ELSA measurements for the process at forward scattering angles. Agreement with the SAID and MAID fits is found below 1 GeV. The present set of cross sections has been incorporated into the SAID database, and exploratory fits have been extended to 3 GeV. Resonance couplings have been extracted and compared to previous determinations.

The differential cross section for the reaction γ+p→π++n was measured at 32 laboratory photon energies between 589 and 1269 MeV at the Caltech synchrotron. At each energy, data have been obtained at typically 15π+ angles between 6° and 90° in the center-of-mass (c.m.) system. A magnetic spectrometer was used to detect the π+ photoproduced in a liquid-hydrogen target. Two Cerenkov counters were used to reject background of positrons and protons. The data clearly show the presence of a pole in the production amplitude due to one-pion exchange. Moravcsik fits to the angular distributions, including data from another experiment carried out by Thiessen, are presented. Extrapolation of these fits to the pole gives a value for the pion-nucleon coupling constant of 14.2±1.7, which is consistent with the accepted value. The "second" and "third" pion-nucleon resonances are evident as peaks in the total cross section and as changes in the shape of the angular distributions. At the third resonance, there is evidence for both a D52 and an F52 amplitude. The absence of large variations with energy in the 0° and 180° cross sections implies that the second and third resonances are mostly produced from an initial state with helicity 32.

Interactions initiated by 3-Bev protons of the Brookhaven Cosmotron were studied by photoemulsion technique. With appropriate criteria, 115 events are attributed to interactions of the incident beam protons with hydrogen nuclei (∼55%) and with bound protons of other nuclei (∼45%). A detailed analysis allowed the subdivision of the 115 events in categories, according to the number of π mesons (N>~0) produced in the collision. The ratio of elastic scattering to the total number of events was estimated to be σelσtotal=0.20−0.07+0.04. The observed cross section for pure elastic scattering is σel=8.9±1.0 mb. The percentages of single, double, triple, and quadruple π-meson production are respectively: 34−20+22; 35.6−23+20; 9.6−4+6; ∼1.0+3.5. Among the 20 most probable cases of single π-meson production—the estimated ratio of π+ to π0 is σπ+σπ0=5.3−1.4+0.3. The experimental results are not in agreement with the Fermi statistical-model theory (in particular the lower limit for the experimental ratio of triple to single production is given by σ3σ1>∼110 in contrast with the predicted ratio σ3σ1=167) but are not inconsistent with the Peaslee excited-state-model theory.
