The differential cross sections for the photoproduction reactions γ+p→π++n, γ+p→K++Λ0, and γ+p→K++Σ0 have ben measured for incident laboratory photon energies between 3.4 and 4.0 GeV and for meson center-of-mass angles from about 25° to 45°. The reactions were studied by observing only the charged mesons. The momenta, velocities, and angles of the mesons were measured with a magnetic spectrometer, and the equivalent of nearly monochromatic gamma rays was obtained by performing bremsstrahlung subtractions. The cross sections agree with the inequality predicted from unbroken SU(3). The measured behavior of dσdt as a function of t shows similarities to that observed in studies of mesonnucleon scattering.

The differential cross section of the reaction γ + p → p + πo has been measured at the Deutsches Elektronen- Synchrotron, Hamburg, at mean phonon energies of 1.36, 2.0 and 3.0 GeV and pion center of mass angles between 0o and 70o. The results are compared with some theoretical calculations based on elementary and reggeized 1- meson exchange.

Photoproduction of Neutral Pions from Hydrogen in the Energy Range 700-1100 Mev

Gamma-rays from the decay of neutral pions photoproduced from hydrogen by the bremsstrahlung beam of the Caltech synchrotron have been studied with a thallium chloride crystal total absorption spectrometer. The energy spectrum of the decay gamma-rays produced by a range of incident photon energy is obtained by the photon difference method and this spectrum enables a separation of the gamma-rays into two groups: (i) those from the decay of neutral pions produced singly from hydrogen and (ii) those from the decay of neutral pions from multipleproduction reactions. The cross sections for the single-production reaction are in agreement with the recoil proton experiments at Caltech and Cornell. For the multiple-production reactions we measure the cross section for producing neutral pions within a range of kinetic energies: It is shown that all available multiple-production data can be explained in terms of two compound states, one at about 750 Mev and the other at some higher energy. This is in agreement with an analysis of the single-photoproduction data, which is given in an appendix. These two states are, respectively, (T=12, J=12+) and (T=32, J=12+).

We present differential cross-sections for the electro-production of single charged pions from deuterium for a virtual photon mass squared −1.0 GeV2 and for pion nucleon masses in the range 1.23–1.68 GeV (the 1st and 2nd resonance regions). The data are compared with predictions from fits to hydrogen data.

Bubble Chamber Study of Photoproduction by 2.8-GeV and 4.7-GeV Polarized Photons. 1. Cross-Section Determinations and Production of rho0 and Delta++ in the Reaction gamma p --> p pi+ pi-

Photoproduction is studied at 2.8 and 4.7 GeV using a linearly polarized monoenergetic photon beam in a hydrogen bubble chamber. We discuss the experimental procedure, the determination of channel cross sections, and the analysis of the channel γp→pπ+π−. A model-independent analysis of the ρ0-decay angular distribution allows us to measure nine independent density-matrix elements. From these we find that the reaction γp→pρ0 proceeds almost completely through natural parity exchange for squared momentum transfers |t|<1 GeV2 and that the ρ production mechanism is consistent with s-channel c.m. helicity conservation for |t|<0.4 GeV2. A cross section for the production of π+π− pairs in the s-channel c.m. helicity-conserving p-wave state is determined. The ρ mass shape is studied as a function of momentum transfer and is found to be inconsistent with a t-independent Ross-Stodolsky factor. Using a t-dependent parametrization of the ρ0 mass shape we derive a phenomenological ρ0 cross section. We compare our phenomenological ρ0 cross section with other experiments and find good agreement for 0.05<|t|<1 GeV2. We discuss the discrepancies in the various determinations of the forward differential cross section. We study models for ρ0 photoproduction and find that the Söding model best describes the data. Using the Söding model we determine a ρ0 cross section. We determine cross sections and nine density-matrix elements for γp→Δ++π−. The parity asymmetry for Δ++ production is incompatible with simple one-pion exchange. We compare Δ++ production with models.

A Measurement of the Beam Asymmetry Parameter Sigma for Neutral Pion Photoproduction in the Energy Range 1.2-GeV-2.8-GeV

An experiment has been completed at the Daresbury synchrotron to measure the asymmetry in the photoproduction cross section of neutral pions on hydrogen, for photons polarised normal to and in the production plane. The source of polarised photons was coherent bremsstrahlung of electrons traversing the lattice structure of diamond and the polarisation P of the γ beam was calculated from the measured intensity of the coherent spike. The asymmetry parameter Σ, defined as Σ = ( σ ⊥ − σ |)/( σ ⊥ + σ |) where σ ⊥( σ |) are the cross sections for photons polarised perpendicular (parallel) to the production plane, has been measured over a range of photon energies from 1.2 to 2.8 GeV and over a range of − t (the square of the four-momentum transfer) from 0.13 (GeV/ c ) 2 to 1.4 (GeV/ c ) 2 . A marked energy variation in the value of Σ is found over the energy region 1.6–1.8 GeV.

Photoproduction of Charged pi Mesons from Hydrogen and Deuterium in the Energy Range Between 250-MeV and 790-MeV

The differential cross sections for γ p→ π + n from hydrogen and the π − π + ratios from deuterium were measured at nine c.m. angles between 30° and 150° for laboratory photon energies between 260 and 800 MeV. A magnetic spectrometer with three layers of scintillation hodoscope was used to detect charged π mesons. The cross section for γ n→ π − p was obtained as a product of d σ d Ω (γ p →π + n ) and the π − π + ratio. The overall features in the cross sections of the two reactions, γ p→ π + n and γ n→ π − p, and in the ratios, π − π + , agree with predictions by Moorhouse, Oberlack and Rosenfeld, and Metcalf and Walker. An investigation of the possible existence of an isotensor current was made and a negative result was found. In detailed balance comparison with the new results on the inverse reaction π − p→ γ n, no apparent violation of time-reversal invariance was observed.

We report results from a measurement of the inclusive diffraction dissociation of photons on hydrogen, γp→Xp, in the range 75<pγ<148 GeV/c, 0.02<‖t‖<0.1 (GeV/c)2, and MX2/s<0.1. Our data show an exponential t dependence and a dominant 1/MX2 behavior for MX2>4 GeV2. We test the finite-mass sum rule and, by comparing γp with π−p data obtained in the same apparatus, we test factorization.
