We report a study of 20 exclusive reactions measured at the AGS at 5.9 GeV/c incident momentum, 90° center of mass. This experiment confirms the strong quark flow dependence of two-body hadron-hadron scattering at large angle. At 9.9 GeV/c an upper limit had been set for the ratio of cross sections for (p¯p→p¯p)(pp→pp) at 90° c.m., with the ratio less than 4%. The present experiment was performed at lower energy to gain sensitivity, but was still within the fixed angle scaling region. A ratio R(p¯ppp)≈140 was measured at 5.9 GeV/c, 90° c.m. in comparison to a ratio near 1.7 for small angle scattering. In addition, many other reactions were measured, often for the first time at 90° c.m. in the scaling region, using beams of π±, K±, p, and p¯ on a hydrogen target. There are similar large differences in cross sections for other reactions: R(K−p→π+Σ−K−p→π−Σ+)≈112, for example. The relative magnitudes of the different cross sections are consistent with the dominance of quark interchange in these 90° reactions, and indicate that pure gluon exchange and quark-antiquark annihilation diagrams are much less important. The angular dependence of several elastic cross sections and the energy dependence at a fixed angle of many of the reactions are also presented.

We present a measurement of the elastic differential cross section $d\sigma(p\bar{p}\rightarrow p\bar{p})/dt$ as a function of the four-momentum-transfer squared t. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of $\approx 31 nb^{-1}$ collected with the D0 detector using dedicated Tevatron $p\bar{p} $ Collider operating conditions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV and covers the range $0.26 <|t|< 1.2 GeV^2$. For $|t|<0.6 GeV^2$, d\sigma/dt is described by an exponential function of the form $Ae^{-b|t|}$ with a slope parameter $ b = 16.86 \pm 0.10(stat) \pm 0.20(syst) GeV^{-2}$. A change in slope is observed at $|t| \approx 0.6 GeV^2$, followed by a more gradual |t| dependence with increasing values of |t|.

The differential scattering cross section is presented for p¯p elastic scattering at an incident laboratory momentum of 2.33 GeV/c based upon 11 758 events. The experiment was performed at the Brookhaven National Laboratory using the 31-inch hydrogen bubble chamber and an electrostatically separated beam. The attempts to fit limited regions of the data are presented for different parametrizations. The parametrization which corresponds to two coherent interfering exponentials successfully reproduces a very large t region for the scattering.

p¯p elastic scattering at an incident beam momentum of 2.85 GeV/c is analyzed using 18 412 events. The simple exponential parametrization of the diffraction peak is found to be a poor representation of the data. Two other parametrizations are tried and the estimates of dσdt at t=0 and of the slope of the diffraction peak are found to differ significantly between various parametrizations. It is found that two coherent interfering exponentials are able to represent the differential cross section over the range 0.04≤|t|≤1.8 (GeV/c)2 with a χ2 probability of approximately 40%.

The interaction between antiprotons and protons has been studied in the range 1910 to 1990 MeV center-of-mass energy in a drift-chamber experiment at the Brookhaven Alternating Gradient Synchrotron. The total cross section has been determined at eleven different incident momenta, and the elastic cross section between 8 and 30 deg in the laboratory has been measured with an energy resolution of about 5 MeV. The cross section for annihilation into charged mesons has also been measured, with the same resolution. There is no evidence in any of these channels for the existence of a narrow resonance.
Data are for total sample with nuclear physics calculation as described in the paper.

The high antiproton-proton luminosity obtained by using a target system consisting of a hydrogen gas-jet crossing a coasting beam of cooled antiproton circulating in one of the rings of CERN's ISR provides the possibility to measure low cross section reactions with very high precision. We present measurements of the antiproton-proton elastic cross section at 90° CM at incident momenta between 3.5 GeV/ c and 5.7 GeV/ c . The precision of these measurements is much higher than previously reported results. The data show that the cross section of this reaction decreases faster than s −12 over this momentum range.

We report results from a measurement of antiproton-proton and proton-proton small-angle elastic scattering at √ s = 24.3 GeV in the range 0.001 ⩽ | t | ⩽ 0.06 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The measurement was performed at the CERN p p Collider by using silicon detectors to observe protons recoiling from a hydrogen cluster-jet target intercepting the stored p and p beams. Fits to the measured differential cross sections yield the ratio of the real to the imaginary part of the forward nuclear scattering amplitude ρ and the nuclear slope parameter b for both p p and pp. We find that the difference Δρ = ρ ( p p ) − ρ( pp ) = 0.031 ± 0.010 agrees with conventional fits and disagrees with the “odderon” fit designed to accommodate the recent UA4 measurement of ρ( p p) at 546 GeV.

We report final results on the polarization parameter P in elastic scattering of π − , K − and antiprotons at 40 GeV/ c incident momentum. The energy dependence of P (t) in π − p above 10 GeV/ c is well fitted by P (t) α s αR(t)-α P (t) where α R (t) are the effective Regge and Pomeron trajectories respectively. The data in K − p are compatible with exchange degeneracy. The results inp¯p show an important structure for |t|> 0.3 (GeV/c) 2 demonstrating the existence of a large helicity flip amplitude.

The logarithmic slope of the differentical cross section for K ± p elastic scattering at 10 and 14 GeV, and for π ± p and p ± p at 10GeV has been measured. Rich structure is observed in the forward slope for all processes, which is well accounted for by the properties of a peripheral exchange amplitude for the nonexotic reactions, and by a peripheral component of the diffractive amplitude as clearly seen in the exotic processes, K ± p and pp.

Differential cross section and polarization distributions are presented for elastic p p scattering at incident momenta of 1.73, 2.13, 2.37 and 2.97 GeV/ c . The data have been analysed in terms of a 5-parameter diffraction model. In terms of this model the difference in the shape of the differential cross sections for p p and pp elastic scattering is a result of the strong absorption in the p p system.

An extensive investigation of antiproton-proton interactions at 5.7 GeV/c without strange-particle production was carried out using a hydrogen bubble chamber. Cross-sections for different channels are given and discussed. The reliability of the analysis was checked using artificially generated events. The cross-sections for elastic scattering, for all processes involving annihilation, and for all other inelastic processes are respectively σel=(16.3±0.6)mb,σannlbil=(22.5±2.0)mb, σinel=(24.8±2.0)mb. TheN * 1:38 is present both in the single and multiple pion production channels. For the reaction MediaObjects/11539_2007_Article_BF02720569_f1.jpg a cross-section of (1.05±0.21) mb was obtained. Cross-sections forN * 1238 production in other channels are also given. Some indication of the presence ofI=1/2 isobars was found in the nucleon-pion and the nucleon-two-pion systems. The inelastic nonannihilation reactions were found to be strongly peripheral. The one-pion exchange model including either a form factor or corrections for absorption was applied to the reaction MediaObjects/11539_2007_Article_BF02720569_f2.jpg . Neither version of the model could correctly account for all features of the reaction. The average number of pions in the annihilation was found to be 7.3±0.6. The presence of an asymmetry in the angular distribution of the charged pions was confirmed at this energy; it is due mostly to high-energy pions. The production of ρ and ω mesons was observed in various annihilation channels. Rates of up to 80% for ρ production and up to 15% for ω production were obtained by fitting phase-space and Breit-Wigner curves to the effective-mass distributions of different channels.

Elastic π±−p, K−−p, and p¯−p scattering cross sections have been measured using three different experimental arrangements covering the c.m. angular regions ∼20°-120°, ∼135°-169°, and ∼165°-180° at incident momenta from 6 to 17 GeV/c. In the region 130°-180°, only π±−p scattering was measured. In the angular region near 180°, the energy dependences and shapes of the π−p backward peaks were determined up to crossed-momentum transfers of u∼−2 (GeV/c)2. At all energies, the π+−p backward peak had a sharp dip at u=−0.13 (GeV/c)2, with no similar effect in the π−−p case. Nearly complete angular distributions of π−−p elastic scattering from 20° to 180° have been obtained at 6 and 10 GeV/c. These results at 6 and 10 GeV/c as well as at 8 GeV/c reveal a sharp dip in π−−p scattering at t=−3 (GeV/c)2. Several structures in the form of dips or shoulders were seen in the p¯−p angular distributions also, with less pronounced structure observed in K−−p scattering. At fixed momentum transfer, all cross sections when expressed as dσdt appear to be decreasing with increasing energy.

Accurate measurements of the position of the first crossover between particle and antiparticle differential cross sections have been performed. The crossover positions at 10.4 GeV for π ± , K ± and p ± scale approximately with the interaction radii.

The small-angle elastic scattering for pp at s=23.5, 30.7, and 52.8 GeV and for p¯p at s=52.8 GeV are measured. The data are normalized on Coulomb scattering. Measurements of π±p, K±p, pp, and p¯p elastic scattering are presented for incident momenta of 3, 3.65, 5, and 6 GeVc and momentum transfers typically 0.03 to 1.8 GeV2. The angle and momentum of the scattered particle were measured with the Argonne Effective Mass Spectrometer for 300 000 events, yielding 930 cross-section values with an uncertainty in absolute normalization of ±4%. Only the K+ and proton data show any significant change in slope of the forward diffraction peak with incident momentum. The particle-antiparticle crossover positions are consistent with no energy dependence, average values being 0.14 ± 0.03, 0.190 ± 0.006, and 0.162 ± 0.004 GeV2 for π' s, K' s, and protons, respectively; these errors reflect both statistics and the ±1.5% uncertainty in particle-antiparticle relative normalization. Differences between particle and antiparticle cross sections isolate interference terms between amplitudes of opposite C parity in the t channel; these differences indicate that the imaginary part of the odd-C nonflip-helicity amplitude has a J0(r(−t)12) structure for −t<0.8 GeV2, as predicted by strong absorption models. The cross-section differences for K± and proton-antiproton are in qualitative agreement with the predictions of ω universality, the agreement improving with increasing energy. The corresponding quark-model predictions relating the π± and K± differences failed by more than a factor of 2. We have combined our π± cross sections with other data to better determine the πN amplitudes in a model-independent way; results of this analysis are presented.

The inclusive production of photons in\(\bar pp\) interactions has been studied at incident momentum of 12 GeV/c. Topological cross section has been presented and KNO distribution for\(\bar pp\) interactions has been studied. Inclusive cross section for γ production has been measured to be 149.5±8.8 mb. Bulk of these photons come from π0 decays whose cross section has been evaluated independently to be 60.4±7.9 mb. Signals of η and ω have been seen in γγ and π+π-π0 decay modes and their inclusive cross sections have been estimated to be 14.9±8.8 mb and 14.6±7.0 mb respectively. Results on average multiplicities of γ and two particle correlation parameters are presented. Neutral pions seem to be more strongly correlated than the charged pions.
