The polarization in pion-nucleon charge exchange was measured at 6 GeV/c incident momentum for 0.1 (GeV/c)2 < |t| < 1.6 (GeV/c)2. Using the channel π+ n ↑ → π0p allowed precise measurement of the recoil proton for good rejection of inelastic events. The results are compared with previous experiments using channel π−p ↑ with or without detection of the recoil neutron.

Inspire Record 281020 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.23078

A total of 22 muon-neutrino-electron elastic-scattering events (νμe→νμe) have been observed in an exposure of the Fermilab 15-foot bubble chamber filled with a heavy neon-hydrogen mixture to a wide-band neutrino beam. The elastic-scattering cross section is measured to be 1.67±0.44×10−42Eν cm2 GeV−1. The value of the weak mixing angle (sin2θW) determined from this cross section, which is consistent with other measurements of this angle, is 0.20−0.05+0.06.

We have measured the cross section, the distribution of scattering angles, and the distribution of noncoplanarity angles for electron-positron elastic scattering at 5 GeV c. m. energy. An analysis based on 230 events with scattering angles between 50 and 130° yields a ratio of the experimental to theoretical quantum-electrodynamic cross section of 1.03 ± 0.09. The scattering-angle and noncoplanarity-angle distributions are also found to be in excellent agreement with the quantum-electrodynamic predictions.

We present experimental results on measuring a single spin asymmetry in η-meson production in the interaction of transversely polarized protons and antiprotons at p lab = 200 GeV / c with a proton target in the region 0.2 < x F < 0.7 for p ↑ p , 0.3 < x F < 0.7 for p ̄ ↑p and 0.7 < p T < 2.0 GeV / c . A comparison of single spin asymmetries in π- and η-meson production is made.

A measurement of the single-spin asymmetry A N in p↑ + p→ π 0 + X at 200 GeV with x F = 0 shows a transition in the production process from a “ low -x T ” regime with A N = 0, through an intermediate region of negative asymmetry, to a “ high -x T ” regime with A N > 0.3. This transition occurs at x T ≈ 0.4 and is consistent with x T -scaling of A N in pion production using polarized beams or targets from √− s =5.2 to 19.4 GeV. Results for A N in η production by polarized protons and in π 0 production by polarized antiprotons are also presented.

The twofold differential cross section for the inelastic scattering of electrons on protons wa was measured as a function of the scattered electron energy for an electron scattering angle of 12°. The kinematic region covered in this experiment was 0.3 (GeV/ c ) 2 < q 2 < 1.0 (GeV/ c ) 2 and W < 2.9 GeV. The Bloom-Gilman as well as the constant scattering angle sum rule of Rittenberg and Rubinstein were tested.

An Improved Measurement of Electroweak Couplings From $e^+ e^- \to e^+ e^-$ and $e^+ e^- \to \mu^+ \mu^-$

We present an analysis of electroweak leptonic couplings from high statistics experiments on Bhabha scattering and μ pair production at an energy of 34.5 GeV. The forward-backward charge asymmetry of the μ pairs was measured to be −0.098±0.023±0.005. The data were found to agree well with the standard theory of electroweak interaction giving sin2θW=0.27±0.07. The leptonic weak couplings were determined to begv=0.000±0.170 andgA=−0.481±0.055. The data were also used to investigate a class of composite models for leptons.

Based on 520 000 fermion pairs accumulated during the first three years of data collection by the ALEPH detector at LEP, updated values of the resonance parameters of theZ are determined to beMZ=(91.187±0.009) GeV, ΓZ=(2.501±0.012) GeV, σhad0=(41.60±0.27) nb, andRℓ=20.78±0.13. The corresponding number of light neutrino species isNν=2.97±0.05. The forward-backward asymmetry in lepton-pair decays is used to determine the ratio of vector to axial-vector couplings of leptons:gV2(MZ2)/gA2(MZ2)=0.0052±0.0016. Combining this with ALEPH measurements of theb andc quark asymmetries and τ polarization gives sin2θWeff=0.2326±0.0013. Assuming the minimal Standard Model, and including measurements ofMW/MZ fromp\(\bar p\) colliders and neutrino-nucleon scattering, the mass of the top quark is\(M_{top} = 156 \pm \begin{array}{*{20}c} {22} \\ {25} \\ \end{array} \pm \begin{array}{*{20}c} {17} \\ {22Higgs} \\ \end{array} \) GeV.
