Analyzing powers ( A y ) and spin-rotation-depolarization parameters ( D SS , D SL , D LS , D LL , D NN ) were determined for 500 MeV p + 2 H and p + 12 C inclusive quasielastic scattering at 10°, 15°, and 20° laboratory scattering angles. The p + 2 H data are consistent with the isospin-average of the proton-proton and proton-neutron scattering observables; the p + 12 C data are not. A relativistic plane wave impulse approximation calculation leads to better agreement with the p + 12 C spin-observables.

500 MeV p→+p elastic and quasielastic, and p→+n quasielastic, analyzing powers (Ay) and spin-rotation-depolarization parameters (DSS, DSL, DLS, DLL, DNN) were determined for center-of-momentum angular ranges 6.8°–55.4° (elastic) and 22.4°–55.4° (quasielastic); liquid hydrogen and deuterium targets were used. The p→+p elastic and quasielastic results are in good agreement; both the p→+p and p→+n parameters are well described by current phase shift solutions.

The differential cross section for K + p elastic scattering has been measured at 864, 969 and 1207 MeV/ c . Our data show a smooth transition from low-energy s-wave scattering to high-energy diffraction, and are some-what in disagreement with a recent experiment on K + p backward scattering.

Direct photon production cross sections obtained in high statistics p ̄ p and pp collisions at s =24.3 GeV at the CERN SPS are used in a next-to-leading order QCD analysis. From the cross section difference σ( p ̄ p → γX)−σ(pp → γX) and quark distributions measured in deep inelastic scattering, a determination of the strong coupling constant, α s , is performed via a measurement of Λ (4) MS . This measurement yields a value Λ (4) MS = 210±22 ( stat. )±44 ( syst. ) +105 −36 ( theo. ) MeV. The corresponding value of α s expressed at M 2 Z is α s (M 2 Z )=0.1112 ±0.0016 ( stat. ) ±0.0033 ( syst. ) +0.0077 −0.0034 ( theo. ) .
Value of LAMBDA(MSBAR) and ALPHAS at MZ**2 deduced from the difference in the pbar and p direct photon cross sections. The second systematic error is due to the uncertainties in the theory.
Proton-proton elastic scattering has been measured at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings in the four-momentum transfer range 0.001 ⩽… t …⩽ 0.015 GeV 2 at centre-of-mass energies of 23 and 31 GeV. The detection of Coulomb scattering and of its interference with nuclear scattering leads to the determination of the real part of the nuclear amplitude and of the total proton-proton cross section by the optical theorem.

A search for supersymmetric electron production via the reaction e+e−→e±γ̃ẽ∓ followed by the decay ẽ∓→e∓γ̃ has been performed with the MAC detector at the electron-positron storage ring PEP. No candidates were found in a sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.4 pb−1. For a massless γ̃ this corresponds to a lower limit on the ẽ mass of 22.4 GeV/c2 at the 95% confidence level.

We present the first measurement of the left-right asymmetry in Bhabha scattering with a polarized electron beam. The effective electron vector and axial vector couplings to the Z0 are extracted from a combined analysis of the polarized Bhabha scattering data and the left-right asymmetry previously published by this collaboration.

The angular distribution of proton-proton elastic scattering has been measured for incident beam momenta of 10.0, 12.0, 14.2 and 24.0 GeV/ c over a range of laboratory scattering angles from 12 to about 140 mrad. Based on 520 000 fermion pairs accumulated during the first three years of data collection by the ALEPH detector at LEP, updated values of the resonance parameters of theZ are determined to beMZ=(91.187±0.009) GeV, ΓZ=(2.501±0.012) GeV, σhad0=(41.60±0.27) nb, andRℓ=20.78±0.13. The corresponding number of light neutrino species isNν=2.97±0.05. The forward-backward asymmetry in lepton-pair decays is used to determine the ratio of vector to axial-vector couplings of leptons:gV2(MZ2)/gA2(MZ2)=0.0052±0.0016. Combining this with ALEPH measurements of theb andc quark asymmetries and τ polarization gives sin2θWeff=0.2326±0.0013. Assuming the minimal Standard Model, and including measurements ofMW/MZ fromp\(\bar p\) colliders and neutrino-nucleon scattering, the mass of the top quark is\(M_{top} = 156 \pm \begin{array}{*{20}c} {22} \\ {25} \\ \end{array} \pm \begin{array}{*{20}c} {17} \\ {22Higgs} \\ \end{array} \) GeV.
