The spin-dependent observables D 0 n 0 n and K 0 nn 0 in pp elastic scattering were measured at 11 energies between 0.84 and 2.7 GeV using the SATURNE II polarized proton beam and the Saclay frozen-spin polarized target. We present the measurements of the spin correlation parameterAookk(np). A longitudinally polarized beam of free neutrons obtained from the break-up of polarized deuterons was scattered on the longitudinally polarized Saclay frozen-spin proton target. Measurements were carried out at SATURNE II, at neutron beam kinetic energies of 0.63, 0.88, 0.98 and 1.08 GeV. The data points cover the angular region from about 40° to 110° CM. The observed angular dependence ofAookk(np) at 0.63 GeV agree with the phase shift analysis predictions except at small angles.
First set of data is with neutron counter hodoscope. Second is using a charge-exchange in the carbon block.

The np and the pp analyzing powers A oono d and spin correlations A oonn d and A oosk d were measured simultaneously using the SATURNE II polarized deuteron beam at 0.744 and 0.794 GeV/nucleon. The results for the pp observables coincide with the free pp elastic scattering data. We thus can assume that also the np analyzing power A oono d and spin correlations A oonn d and A oosk d are equal to those for scattering of free polarized neutrons. The np data cover the angular region 95°⩽ θ CM ⩽122°. Our results for A oono d (np) confirm the phase-shift analysis predictions but spin correlations A oonn d (np) and A oosk d (np) have never been measured in this energy region and will considerably affect the PSA solution. Present results allow conclusions about the angular dependence near the minimum of A oono (np) and A oonn (np) in the vicinity of 0.8 GeV.

We present first measurements of total cross section differences Δσ T and Δσ L for a polarized neutron beam transmitted through a polarized proton target. Measurements were carried out at SATURNE II, at 0.63, 0.88, 0.98 and 1.08 GeV. The results are compared with Δσ L data points deduced from p-d and p-p transmission experiments, and with phase shift analyses predictions. The present results together with the corresponding pp data yield two of the three spin dependent forward scattering amplitudes for isospin I =0.
Statistical errors are statistics and random fluctuations. Systematic error contains uncertainties in beam and target polarizations, hydrogen content of the target, and residual error due to misalignment.

Measurements were carried out at SATURNE II, at 11 energies between 0.63 and 1.1 GeV for Δσ T and at 9 energies between 0.312 and 1.1 GeV for Δσ L . The results are compared with measurements at PSI and LAMPF as well as with Δσ L data points deduced from p-d and p-p transmission experiments at the ANL-ZGS. At all energies above 1.3 GeV the angular distribution shows a dip at fixed four-momentum transfer − t ∼ 0.90 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The value of A oonn ( θ CM = 90°) decreases from A oonn (90°) ≅ 0.57 at 0.88 GeV to A oonn (90°) ≅ 0.35 at 2.7 GeV. We report a high precision measurement of the transverse single spin asymmetry $A_N$ at the center of mass energy $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV in elastic proton-proton scattering by the STAR experiment at RHIC. The $A_N$ was measured in the four-momentum transfer squared $t$ range $0.003 \leqslant |t| \leqslant 0.035$ $\GeVcSq$, the region of a significant interference between the electromagnetic and hadronic scattering amplitudes. The measured values of $A_N$ and its $t$-dependence are consistent with a vanishing hadronic spin-flip amplitude, thus providing strong constraints on the ratio of the single spin-flip to the non-flip amplitudes. Since the hadronic amplitude is dominated by the Pomeron amplitude at this $\sqrt{s}$, we conclude that this measurement addresses the question about the presence of a hadronic spin flip due to the Pomeron exchange in polarized proton-proton elastic scattering.

Polarization transfer in the 4He(e,e'p)3H reaction at a Q^2 of 0.4 (GeV/c)^2 was measured at the Mainz Microtron MAMI. The ratio of the transverse to the longitudinal polarization components of the ejected protons was compared with the same ratio for elastic ep scattering. The results are consistent with a recent fully relativistic calculation which includes a predicted medium modification of the proton form factor based on a quark-meson coupling model.

Single particles and jets in deeply inelastic scattering at low x are measured with the H1 detector in the region away from the current jet and towards the proton remnant, known as the forward region. Hadronic final state measurements in this region are expected to be particularly sensitive to QCD evolution effects. Jet cross-sections are presented as a function of Bjorken-x for forward jets produced with a polar angle to the proton direction, theta, in the range 7 < theta < 20 degrees. Azimuthal correlations are studied between the forward jet and the scattered lepton. Charged and neutral single particle production in the forward region are measured as a function of Bjorken-x, in the range 5 < theta < 25 degrees, for particle transverse momenta larger than 1 GeV. QCD based Monte Carlo predictions and analytical calculations based on BFKL, CCFM and DGLAP evolution are compared to the data. Predictions based on the DGLAP approach fail to describe the data, except for those which allow for a resolved photon contribution.

Measurements of polarized-neutron–polarized−3He scattering are reported. The target consisted of cryogenically polarized solid He3, with thickness 0.04 atom/b and polarization ∼0.4. Polarized neutrons were produced via the H3(p→,n→)3He or H2(d→,n→)3He polarization-transfer reactions. The longitudinal and transverse total cross-section differences ΔσL and ΔσT were measured for incident neutron energies 2–8 MeV. The results are compared to phase-shift predictions based on four different analyses of n−3He scattering. The best agreement is obtained with a recent R-matrix analysis of A=4 scattering and reaction data, lending strong support to the He4 level scheme obtained in that analysis. Discrepancies with other phase-shift parametrizations of n−3He scattering exist, attributable in most instances to one or two particular partial waves. © 1996 The American Physical Society.

A measurement is presented, using data taken with the H1 detector at HERA, of the contribution of diffractive interactions to deep-inelastic electron-proton scattering. The diffractive contribution to the proton structure function is evaluated as a function of the appropriate deep-inelastic scattering variables using a class of deep-inelastic ep scattering events with no hadronic energy flow in an interval of pseudo-rapidity adjacent to the proton beam direction. The dependence of this contribution on x-pomeron is consistent with both a diffractive interpretation and a factorisable ep diffractive cross section. A first measurement of the deep-inelastic structure of the pomeron in the form of a factorised structure function is presented. This structure function is observed to be consistent with scale invariance.

We report a study of electron proton collisions at very low Q 2 , corresponding to virtual photoproduction at centre of mass energies in the range 100–295 GeV. The distribution in transverse energy of the observed hadrons is much harder than can be explained by soft processes. Some of the events show back-to-back two-jet production at the rate and with the characteristics expected from hard two-body scattering. A subset of the two-jet events have energy in the electron direction consistent with that expected from the photon remnant in resolved photon processes.

We present the most accurate and complete data set for the analyzing power Ay(theta) in neutron-proton scattering. The experimental data were corrected for the effects of multiple scattering, both in the center detector and in the neutron detectors. The final data at En = 12.0 MeV deviate considerably from the predictions of nucleon-nucleon phase-shift analyses and potential models. The impact of the new data on the value of the charged pion-nucleon coupling constant is discussed in a model study.

The exclusive production of $\rho~0$ mesons in deep inelastic electron-proton scattering has been studied using the ZEUS detector. Cross sections have been measured in the range $7 < Q~2 < 25$ GeV$~2$ for $\gamma~*p$ centre of mass (c.m.) energies from 40 to 130 GeV. The $\gamma~*p \rightarrow \rho~0 p$ cross section exhibits a $Q~{-(4.2 \pm 0.8 ~{+1.4}_{-0.5})}$ dependence and both longitudinally and transversely polarised $\rho~0$'s are observed. The $\gamma~*p \rightarrow \rho~0 p$ cross section rises strongly with increasing c.m. energy, when compared with NMC data at lower energy, which cannot be explained by production through soft pomeron exchange. The data are compared with perturbative QCD calculations where the rise in the cross section reflects the increase in the gluon density at low $x$. the gluon density at low $x$.

This paper presents an analysis of the inclusive properties of diffractive deep inelastic scattering events produced in $ep$ interactions at HERA. The events are characterised by a rapidity gap between the outgoing proton system and the remaining hadronic system. Inclusive distributions are presented and compared with Monte Carlo models for diffractive processes. The data are consistent with models where the pomeron structure function has a hard and a soft contribution. The diffractive structure function is measured as a function of $\xpom$, the momentum fraction lost by the proton, of $\beta$, the momentum fraction of the struck quark with respect to $\xpom$, and of $Q~2$. The $\xpom$ dependence is consistent with the form \xpoma where $a=1.30\pm0.08(stat)~{+0.08}_{-0.14}(sys)$ in all bins of $\beta$ and $Q~2$. In the measured $Q~2$ range, the diffractive structure function approximately scales with $Q~2$ at fixed $\beta$. In an Ingelman-Schlein type model, where commonly used pomeron flux factor normalisations are assumed, it is found that the quarks within the pomeron do not saturate the momentum sum rule.

Measurements have been made of ΔσT for polarized neutrons incident on a polarized-proton target from 3.65 to 11.60 MeV. In the energy range near 10 MeV, ΔσT is very sensitive to the nucleon-nucleon tensor interaction. Comparison of the data to potential-model predictions indicate that the tensor interaction is weak, resulting in values of the 3S1−3D1 mixing parameter ε1 which are smaller than predicted by any nucleon-nucleon potential model. A smaller tensor force will bring the predictions of local potential models for the triton binding energy into closer agreement with the experimental value.

We report measurements of spin correlations and analyzing powers in He→3(p→, 2p) and He→3(p→, pn) quasielastic scattering as a function of momentum transfer and missing momentum at 197 MeV using a polarized internal target at the Indiana University Cyclotron Facility Cooler Ring. At sufficiently high momentum transfer we find He→3(p→, pn) spin observables are in good agreement with free p−n scattering observables, and therefore that He→3 can serve as a good polarized neutron target. The extracted polarizations of nucleons in He→3 at low missing momentum are consistent with Faddeev calculations.

Characteristics of hadron production in diffractive deep-inelastic positron-proton scattering are studied using data collected in 1994 by the H1 experiment at HERA. The following distributions are measured in the centre-of-mass frame of the photon dissociation system: the hadronic energy flow, the Feynman-x (x_F) variable for charged particles, the squared transverse momentum of charged particles (p_T^{*2}), and the mean p_T^{*2} as a function of x_F. These distributions are compared with results in the gamma^* p centre-of-mass frame from inclusive deep-inelastic scattering in the fixed-target experiment EMC, and also with the predictions of several Monte Carlo calculations. The data are consistent with a picture in which the partonic structure of the diffractive exchange is dominated at low Q^2 by hard gluons.

Deep inelastic scattering (DIS) events, selected from 1993 data taken by the H1 experiment at HERA, are studied in the Breit frame of reference. The fragmentation function of the quark is compared with those of \ee data. It is shown that certain aspects of the quarks emerging from within the proton in \ep interactions are essentially the same as those of quarks pair-created from the vacuum in \ee annihilation. The measured area, peak position and widthof the fragmentation function show that the kinematic evolution variable, equivalent to the \ee squared centre of mass energy, is in the Breit frame the invariant square of the four-momentum transfer. We comment on the extent to which we have evidence for coherence effects in parton showers.

Jet substructure and differential cross sections for jets produced in the photoproduction and deep inelastic ep scattering regimes have been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 82.2 pb-1. The substructure of jets has been studied in terms of the jet shape and subjet multiplicity for jets with transverse energies Et(jet) > 17 GeV. The data are well described by the QCD calculations. The jet shape and subjet multiplicity are used to tag gluon- and quark-initiated jets. Jet cross sections as functions of Et(jet), jet pseudorapidity, the jet-jet scattering angle, dijet invariant mass and the fraction of the photon energy carried by the dijet system are presented for gluon- and quark-tagged jets. Global properties of the hadronic final state in deep inelastic scattering events at HERA are investigated. The data are corrected for detector effects and are compared directly with QCD phenomenology. Energy flows in both the laboratory frame and the hadronic centre of mass system and energy-energy correlations in the laboratory frame are presented. A measurement is made of the cross section for the process ep --> eXY in deep-inelastic scattering with the H1 detector at HERA. The cross section is presented in terms of a differential structure function F_2^D(3)(x_P,beta,Q^2) of the proton over the kinematic range 4.5 < Q^2 < 75 GeV^2. The dependence of F_2^D(3) on x_P is found to vary with beta, demonstrating that a factorisation of F_2^D(3) with a single diffractive flux independent of beta and Q^2 is not tenable. An interpretation in which a leading diffractive exchange and a subleading reggeon contribute to F_2^D(3) reproduces well the x_P dependence of F_2^D(3) with values for the pomeron and subleading reggeon intercepts of alpha_P(0)=1.203 \pm 0.020(stat.)\pm 0.013(sys.) ^{+0.030}_{-0.035}(model} and alpha_reg(0)=0.50\pm 0.11(stat.)\pm 0.11 (sys.}^{+0.09}_{-0.10} (model), respectively. A fit is performed of the data using a QCD motivated model, in which parton distributions are assigned to the leading and subleading exchanges. In this model, the majority of the momentum of the pomeron must be carried by gluons in order for the data to be well described.

This paper presents measurements of D^{*\pm} production in deep inelastic scattering from collisions between 27.5 GeV positrons and 820 GeV protons. The data have been taken with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The decay channel $D^{*+}\to (D^0 \to K^- \pi^+) \pi^+ $ (+ c.c.) has been used in the study. The $e^+p$ cross section for inclusive D^{*\pm} production with $5<Q^2<100 GeV^2$ and $y<0.7$ is 5.3 \pms 1.0 \pms 0.8 nb in the kinematic region {$1.3<p_T(D^{*\pm})<9.0$ GeV and $| \eta(D^{*\pm}) |<1.5$}. Differential cross sections as functions of p_T(D^{*\pm}), $\eta(D^{*\pm}), W$ and $Q^2$ are compared with next-to-leading order QCD calculations based on the photon-gluon fusion production mechanism. After an extrapolation of the cross section to the full kinematic region in p_T(D^{*\pm}) and $\eta$(D^{*\pm}), the charm contribution $F_2^{c\bar{c}}(x,Q^2)$ to the proton structure function is determined for Bjorken $x$ between 2 $\cdot$ 10$^{-4}$ and 5 $\cdot$ 10$^{-3}$.

The electroproduction of J/psi and psi(2S) mesons is studied in elastic, quasi-elastic and inclusive reactions for four momentum transfers 2 < Q^2 < 80 GeV^2 and photon-proton centre of mass energies 25 < W < 180 GeV. The data were taken with the H1 detector at the electron proton collider HERA in the years 1995 to 1997. The total virtual photon-proton cross section for elastic J/psi production is measured as a function of Q^2 and W. The dependence of the production rates on the square of the momentum transfer from the proton (t) is extracted. Decay angular distributions are analysed and the ratio of the longitudinal and transverse cross sections is derived. The ratio of the cross sections for quasi-elastic psi(2S) and J/psi meson production is measured as a function of Q^2. The results are discussed in terms of theoretical models based upon perturbative QCD. Differential cross sections for inclusive and inelastic production of J/psi mesons are determined and predictions within two theoretical frameworks are compared with the data, the non-relativistic QCD factorization approach including colour octet and colour singlet contributions, and the model of Soft Colour Interactions.

The cross section for deeply virtual Compton scattering in the reaction ep -> e gamma p has been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using integrated luminosities of 95.0 pb-1 of e+p and 16.7 pb-1 of e-p collisions. Differential cross sections are presented as a function of the exchanged-photon virtuality, Q2, and the centre-of-mass energy, W, of the gamma*p system in the region 5 < Q2 < 100 GeV2 and 40 < W < 140 GeV. The measured cross sections rise steeply with increasing W. The measurements are compared to QCD-based calculations.

The distribution of the azimuthal angle for the charged hadrons has been studied in the hadronic centre-of-mass system for neutral current deep inelastic positron-proton scattering with the ZEUS detector at HERA. Measurements of the dependence of the moments of this distribution on the transverse momenta of the charged hadrons are presented. Asymmetries that can be unambiguously attributed to perturbative QCD processes have been observed for the first time.

Mean values and differential distributions of event-shape variables have been studied in neutral current deep inelastic scattering using an integrated {luminosity} of 82.2 pb$^{-1}$ collected with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The kinematic range was $80 < Q^2 < 20 480\gev^2$ and $0.0024 < x < 0.6$, where $Q^2$ is the virtuality of the exchanged boson and $x$ is the Bjorken variable. The data are compared with a model based on a combination of next-to-leading-order QCD calculations with next-to-leading-logarithm corrections and the Dokshitzer-Webber non-perturbative power corrections. The power-correction method provides a reasonable description of the data for all event-shape variables studied. Nevertheless, the lack of consistency of the determination of $\alpha_s$ and of the non-perturbative parameter of the model, $\albar$, suggests the importance of higher-order processes that are not yet included in the model.

Deep inelastic $e~-p$ scattering has been studied in both the charged-current (CC) and neutral-current (NC) reactions at momentum transfers squared, $Q~2$, between 400 GeV$~2$ and the kinematic limit of 87500 GeV$~2$ using the ZEUS detector at the HERA $ep$ collider. The CC and NC total cross sections, the NC to CC cross section ratio, and the differential cross sections, $ d\sigma/dQ~2 $, are presented. For $Q~2 \simeq M_W~2$, where $M_W$ is the mass of the $W$ boson, the CC and NC cross sections have comparable magnitudes, demonstrating the equal strengths of the weak and electromagnetic interactions at high $Q~2$. The $Q~2$ dependence of the CC cross section determines the mass term in the CC propagator to be $M_{W} = 76 \pm 16 \pm 13$GeV.

A contact interaction analysis is presented to search for new phenomena beyond the Standard Model in deep inelastic $e~\pm p \rightarrow e~\pm \, hadrons$ scattering. The data are collected with the H1 detector at HERA and correspond to integrated luminosities of $0.909 \ {\rm pb}~{-1}$ and $2.947 \ {\rm pb}~{-1}$ for electron and positron beams, respectively. The differential cross sections $d\sigma / dQ~2$ are measured in the $Q~2$ range bet\-ween $160 \ \GeV~2$ and $20,000 \ \GeV~2$. The absence of any significant deviation from the Standard Model prediction is used to constrain the couplings and masses of new leptoquarks and to set limits on electron--quark compositeness scales and on the radius of light quarks.

Jet rates in deep inelastic electron proton scattering are studied with the H1 detector at HERA for momentum transfers squared between 10 and 4000 GeV 2 . It is shown that they can be quantitatively described by perturbative QCD in next to leading order making use of the parton densities of the proton and with the strong coupling constant α s as a free parameter. The measured value, α s ( M Z 2 ) = 0.123 ± 0.018, is in agreement both with determinations from e + e − annihilation at LEP using the same observable and with the world average.

Cross sections for e^+p charged current deep inelastic scattering at a centre-of-mass energy of 318 GeV have been determined with an integrated luminosity of 60.9pb^-1 collected with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The differential cross sections dsigma/dQ^2, dsigma/dx and dsigma/dy for Q^2>200 GeV^2 are presented. In addition, d^2sigma/dxdQ^2 has been measured in the kinematic range 280 GeV^2 < Q^2 < 17000 GeV^2 and 0.008 < x < 0.42. The predictions of the Standard Model agree well with the measured cross sections. The mass of the W boson propagator is determined to be M_W=78.9 +/- 2.0 (stat.) +/- 1.8 (syst.) +2.0 -1.8 (PDF) GeV from a fit to dsigma/dQ^2. The chiral structure of the Standard Model is also investigated in terms of the (1-y)^2 dependence of the the double-differential cross section. The structure-function F_2^CC has been extracted by combining the measurements presented here with previous ZEUS results from e^-p scattering, extending the measurement obtained in a neutrino-nucleus scattering experiment to a significantly higher Q^2 region.
