We have used the spin-precession technique to measure the Σ− magnetic moment (μΣ). A Σ− beam with a polarization of 22% was produced by a 400-GeV proton beam striking a Cu target at nominal production angles of ±3 mrad. We simultaneously recorded 21 000 Σ−→ne−ν¯ decays and 650 000 Σ−→nπ− decays at Σ− beam momenta of 253 and 308 GeV/c. We find μΣ=−1.166±0.014±0.010 nuclear magnetons, where the quoted errors are statistical and systematic, respectively.

We have measured the production polarization and magnetic moment of a sample of 89×103Ξ− hyperons produced in the inclusive reaction p(400 GeV/c)+Cu→Ξ−+X. The weighted average of the polarization is -0.070±0.008±0.010 at a pt of 0.63 GeV/c. The Ξ−'s magnetic moment yields the value μΞ=−0.661±0.036±0.036 nuclear magnetons. The first error is statistical, the second systematic.

The elastic scattering of K+ mesons on protons is studied at 3.5 and 5 GeV/c. The total elastic cross-sections are found to be (4.36±0.36) mb and (3.82±0.41) mb respectively. The differential elastic cross-sections, which exhibit characteristic diffraction peaks, are fitted by dσ/dt=(dσ/dt)0eαt, giving α=(3.85±0.12) and (4.70±0.21) (GeV/c)−2 for the two momenta respectively, with |t|⪝0.65 (GeV/c)2. The results are compared to those at neighbouring energies, giving some support to the presence of a real part of the forward scattering amplitude. The diffraction peak shows definite shrinking with increasing momenta. The data are examined in the light of models for high-energy scattering.

A high-statistics measurement of the differential cross-sections for neutrino-iron scattering in the wide-band neutrino beam at the CERN SPS is presented. Nucleon structure functions are extracted and theirQ2 evolution is compared with the predictions of quantum chromodynamics.

In the course of a systematic study of K+p interactions at 3.0 GeV/c, the elastic-scattering reaction has been investigated. A total of 1720 events were identified as elastic scatters, giving a cross-section of (4.8±0.4) mb. The angular distribution shows characteristic diffraction peaking and was fitted using dσ/d|t|=(dσ/d|t|)0 exp [αt+βt 2], in the momentum-transfer region (0.05÷1.14) (GeV/c)2. The best fit gaveα=(4.55±0.39) (GeV/c)−2 andβ=(0.64±0.42)(GeV/c)−4. The extrapolated experimental cross-section at 0°, (dσ/dt)0, is found to be (19.5±2.3) mb/(GeV/c)2, and exceeds the optical-theorem prediction by (3.8±2.3) mb/(GeV/c)2, implying that there is a contribution from the real part of the K+p scattering amplitude at 3.0 GeV/c.

The invariant mass spectrum of neutral final states produced in π − p charge-exchange scattering at 40 GeV/ c has been studied, searching for heavy particles decaying in 2γ. A peak is observed around 2.85 GeV/ c 2 . The cross section of the reaction π − p→X(2.85)+n, times the branching ratio of the X→2 γ decay, is measured to be σ × BR ⋍ 2 × 10 −34 cm 2 .

The final results from the WA 1/2 neutrino experiment in the 1984 CERN 160 GeV narrow band beam are presented. The ratiosRν and\(R_{\bar v} \) of neutral to charged current interaction rates of neutrinos and antineutrinos in iron are measured to beRν=0.3072±0.0033 and\(R_{\bar v} \)=0.382±0.016. A value of the electroweak parameter sin2 θw = 1 −mW2/mZ2 is extracted fromRν. The result is sin2 θw =0.228+0.013(mc−1.5)±0.0003 (theor.) wheremc is the mass of the charmed quark in GeV formt=60 GeV,MH=100 GeV, ρ=1. CombiningRν and\(R_{\bar v} \) one obtains a value for ρ=0.991+0.023(mc−1.5)±0.020(exp.). Alternatively,Rν and\(R_{\bar v} \) yield a precise value of the ratio of intermediate vector boson massesmW/mZ=0.880−0.007(mc−1.5)±0.002(exp.)±0.002(theor.). Comparison of these results with those from direct measurements of the vector boson masses are presented. In a model-independent analysis the left- and right-handed neutral current coupling constants,gL2 andgR2, are determined.

We present the first measurement of the left-right asymmetry in Bhabha scattering with a polarized electron beam. The effective electron vector and axial vector couplings to the Z0 are extracted from a combined analysis of the polarized Bhabha scattering data and the left-right asymmetry previously published by this collaboration.
