Measurements of polarization in pi- p elastic scattering at large angles

We have made measurements of polarization in π−p elastic scattering, with emphasis over the backward region, at 1.60 to 2.28 GeVc. The results indicate the absence of u-channel dominance in the backward region, as was observed in the case of π+p scattering. Comparisons have been made with predictions of various phase-shift analyses which show that the agreement is generally very poor in the backward region.

Inclusive pi0 Production in pi- p Interactions at 5-GeV/c

We have measured the cross section for the reaction π−p→π0+anything at an incident momentum of 5 GeV/c. The two γ rays from π0 decays were detected using a 150-element lead-glass hodoscope array. A comparison is given of the inclusive π0 spectrum from hydrogen (obtained through a subtraction of CH2 and C target data) with π0 production from C and Cu.

K+- proton scattering from 200 to 600 MeV/c

The differential cross section for K+p elastic scattering has been measured at several momenta in the interval 200-600 MeV/c within a hydrogen bubble chamber. The data have been fitted with a partial-wave analysis. We obtain solutions which are dominated over the entire momentum range by s-wave scattering, with constructive interference between the nuclear and Coulomb scattering. The effective-range approximation with only s waves yields a K+p scattering length a=−0.314±0.007 F and an effective range r0=0.36±0.007 F. The measured total inelastic cross section at 588 MeV/c is 11−5+9 μb.

Measurement of polarization pn pi- p ---> pi0 n at 3.5 and 5.0 gev/c

The polarization parameter P(t) for the reaction π−p→π0n has been measured at 3.5 and 5.0 GeV/c over the range 0.2<~−t<~1.8 (GeV/c)2. The two γ rays from the π0 decay were detected in a large lead-glass hodoscope. The results agree with the positive polarization values found in earlier Argonne National Laboratory data at −t<0.35 (GeV/c)2. P(t) drops to a small value near t=−0.6 (GeV/c)2 and remains the same out to t=−1.8 (GeV/c)2.

We have measured the ratio g1pF1p over the range 0.029<x<0.8 and 1.3<Q2<10 (GeV/c)2 using deep-inelastic scattering of polarized electrons from polarized ammonia. An evaluation of the integral ∫01g1p(x, Q2)dx at fixed Q2=3 (GeV/c)2 yields 0.127±0.004(stat)±0.010(syst), in agreement with previous experiments, but well below the Ellis-Jaffe sum rule prediction of 0.160±0.006. In the quark-parton model, this implies Δq=0.27±0.10.
