We have measured the Wolfenstein triple-scattering parameters R, D, and A′ at 1.9 GeV for p−p scattering at 90° in the c.m. system. We find that R=0.11±0.16, A′=−0.54±0.16, and D=0.91±0.21, where these parameters are defined in the c.m. system. The possibility of a vector character for the strong inter-actions is discussed. We conclude that neither a single vector-meson exchange nor a single pseudoscalar-meson exchange can account for the data. Spin effects are found to remain an important part of the nucleon-nucleon interaction at four-momentum transfer −t=1.8 (GeV/c)2.

We report a search for quasistable particles with anomalous charge or large mass produced by the interaction of 300-GeV protons at the National Accelerator Laboratory. Analyses of energy losses in a counter telescope lead to cross-section limits of 10−35 cm2 for particles with charges of e3 and 2e3 and 5×10−31 cm2 for charge-4e3 particles. Time-of-flight measurements gave cross-section limits of about 10−31 cm2 for the production of massive charged particles.

Polarized and unpolarized proton-proton elastic scattering is investigated with the EDDA-experiment at the Cooler Synchrotron COSY at Jülich to significantly improve the world data base in the beam energy range 500–2500 MeV. Measurements during beam acceleration with thin internal targets and a large acceptance detector provide excitation functions over a broad angular and energy range with unprecedented internal consistency. Data taking with an unpolarized CH2 fiber target and an unpolarized beam have been completed and the derived differential cross sections are presented and compared to a recent phase shift analysis. With a polarized atomic beam target newly installed in COSY and a polarized COSY beam—currently under development—the measurements will be extended to analyzing powers and spin correlation parameters.

The inclusive production of π and η mesons at 90° from proton-proton collisions has been measured at the CERN ISR at centre-of-mass energies between 23.5 and 62.4 GeV. The momentum correlation of charged particles emitted together with a large transverse momentum pion has also been studied, using two magnetic spectrometers each centred at 90°.

The differential cross sections for neutron-proton elastic charge-exchange scattering have been measured with a two-arm technique for incident neutron momenta between 22 and 65 GeV/ c and for values of the momentum transfer squared between 0.002 and 0.8 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The sharp forward peak observed previously at lower energies is also present at momenta up to 65 GeV/ c ; however the s dependence of the cross section is slowing down.

Transverse momentum distributions of λ o , λ o , and K o , produced in pp collisions at x = 0, have obtained at the CERN ISR. The K o yield is in agreement with published K + , K − results, obtained at this centre-of-mass energy (√ s ≈44 GeV). The results on λ o and λ o production obtained in this experiment are compared with results obtained at lower centre-of-mass energies.

In an experiment performed at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings (ISR), 11 e + e − pairs of high invariant mass value (> 2.5 GeV/c 2 ) have been observed. Of these events, 9 can be interpreted as arising from the reaction p + p → J (3.1) + anything. the cross-section for this reaction is estimated and compared with the result obtained at lower centre-of-mass energies.

The differential cross section for the charge-exchange reaction K−p→K¯0n has been measured at 22 incident momenta between 515 and 956 MeV/c. Experimental results and Legendre-polynomial fits to the data are presented.
