The differential cross section for K + p elastic scattering has been measured at 864, 969 and 1207 MeV/ c . Our data show a smooth transition from low-energy s-wave scattering to high-energy diffraction, and are some-what in disagreement with a recent experiment on K + p backward scattering.

The joint decay density-matrix elements have been measured for the ρ0Δ++ and ωΔ++ channels at 3.7 GeV/c. The data are presented as a function of momentum transfer in both the t-channel and s-channel coordinate systems. The presence of correlated decays is illustrated for both reactions by employing selective cuts on the decay angles of one resonance, and displaying the effects on the decay distribution of the opposing resonance. An amplitude analysis is performed with the data near 0° production angle, where we obtain a helicity decomposition of the scattering amplitude with no experimental ambiguity.

Results are reported based on a study of 3114 π−p events at 205 GeV/c in the National Accelerator Laboratory 30-in. bubble chamber. The measured π−p total and elastic cross sections are 24.0 ± 0.5 and 3.0 ± 0.3 mb, respectively. The elastic differential cross section has a slope of 9.0 ± 0.7 GeV−2 for 0.03≤−t≤0.6 GeV2. The average charged-particle multiplicity for the inelastic events is 8.02 ± 0.12.

A study of 205-GeV/c π−p interactions has been made with a 48 800-picture exposure in the bare Fermilab 30-inch hydrogen bubble chamber. The average number of charged particles produced per inelastic interaction is 7.99±0.06. The elastic cross section is 3.18±0.13 mb and the total cross section is 24.19±0.44 mb. The inclusive cross sections for neutral-particle production are: σ(γ)=171.3±15.3 mb, σ(KS0)=3.64±0.61 mb (x<0.3), σ(Λ)=1.71±0.34 mb (x<0.3), and σ(Λ¯)=0.59±0.23 mb (x<0.1). The average number of π0's produced per inelastic collision is consistent with a linear rise with the number of charged particles, and about equal to the number of produced π− or π+. The average number of K0's, Λ's, and Λ¯'s is consistent with very little dependence on the number of charged particles. General characteristics of neutral-particle production are presented and compared with other experiments. For each topology the produced neutral energy is ∼13 of the incident energy.

A study of the A2+ mass spectrum in π+p interactions at 3.7 GeVc is presented. For a cut of t′=0.1−2.0 GeV2 and on eliminating the Δ++ we find that the three-pion mass spectrum in the A2+ region is fitted by the dipole formula with a confidence level of 53% and a single Breit-Wigner formula with a confidence level of 11%. Our result thus favors A2+ splitting although a single Breit-Wigner fit cannot be ruled out. We also report the A2+ decay branching fractions measured over all t′ values. They are 0.78 ± 0.05, 0.15 ± 0.04, 0.06 ± 0.03, and < 0.02 for ρπ, ηπ, KK¯, and η′π, respectively, in good agreement with other experiments.

In a 48 000-picture exposure of the Fermilab 30-inch hydrogen bubble chamber to a 205 GeV/ c π − beam, we have measured 169 events of the reaction, π − p → π − π + π − p, with a cross section of 635 ± 61 μ b. This reaction proceeds almost entirely via low mass π − → 3 π and p → p ππ dissociation. Factorization is satisfied for p → pππ dissociation in πp and pp interactions.

The inclusive ϱ ° production cross section has been measured in the reaction π − p → π + π − X at 205 GeV/ c . We find σ ( ϱ ° ) = 13.5 ± 3.4 mb, with most of the production occuring in the central region. Assuming σ ( ϱ + ) ≈ σ ( ϱ − ) ≈ σ ( ϱ ° ), it is concluded that approximately one-third of the pions at this energy come from ϱ -decay.

We present experimental results on K + d interactions from 865 to 1585 MeV/ c incident beam momentum. We report measurements of several K + d partial cross sections and calculate most of the others using relations derived from isospin conservation and data from other experiments. The most striking feature of the cross section data is the abrupt rise of the total single-pion-production cross section near 1000 MeV/ c . We extract isospin-0 KN partial cross sections and find a rapid quasi-two-body reaction KN → K ∗ N . As in the case of the isospin-1 K + N system, it appears that the structure around 1200 MeV/ c in the total cross section for the isospin-0 K ∗ N system is well reconstructed by the sum of three smoothly varying channel cross sections σ 0 (KN), σ 0 (KN π ) and σ 0 (KN ππ ). We study thereaction KN → K ∗ N near threshold and find that the production and decay angular distributions can be interpreted in terms of t -channel phenomena, specifically a superposition of ω, ϱ, and π exchange. As is true of the isospin-1 KΔ and K ∗ N final states, the isospin-0 K ∗ N state has a behavior near threshold which is not very different from its behavior at much higher energy.

We present cross sections and angular distributions for the reaction K + d → K o pp at 865, 970, 1210, 1365 and 1585 MeV/ c . Making corrections for deuterium effects, we observe the following features of the elastic charge exchange process K + n → K 0 p: a) the c.m. angular distribution becomes increasingly peripheral as the momentum increases from 800 to 1600 MeV/ c ; b) the forward amplitude is largely real. Attempts to describe the data either in terms of a Regge model or in terms of dominance by an elastic P 1 2 isoscalar KN resonance are discussed.

A beam of ∼200-Mev π+ mesons was defined inside the vacuum chamber of the Nevis Cyclotron. Nuclear emulsions were exposed to a flux of about 104 mesons/cm2. The plates were scanned for pion-hydrogen scatterings and 103 such events were observed in two interaction energies, 151±7 Mev and 188±8 Mev. We obtain total cross sections of 152±31 and 159±34×10−27 cm2, respectively. The data suggest that the angular distribution changes from backwards peaked to almost symmetric over this energy interval. Our observations are not in agreement with the hypothesis of a P32-wave resonance in this energy region. The best fit to the combined results includes a D-wave contribution of -5.4°, although satisfactory agreement may be obtained with only S and P waves.
Axis error includes +- 0.0/0.0 contribution (?////Due to flux, scanning efficiency, doubtful and background events, and thesmall uncertainty in the density of hydrogen in the emulsion).

A comprehensive study on the atmospheric neutrino flux in the energy region from sub-GeV up to several TeV using the Super-Kamiokande water Cherenkov detector is presented in this paper. The energy and azimuthal spectra of the atmospheric ${\nu}_e+{\bar{\nu}}_e$ and ${\nu}_{\mu}+{\bar{\nu}}_{\mu}$ fluxes are measured. The energy spectra are obtained using an iterative unfolding method by combining various event topologies with differing energy responses. The azimuthal spectra depending on energy and zenith angle, and their modulation by geomagnetic effects, are also studied. A predicted east-west asymmetry is observed in both the ${\nu}_e$ and ${\nu}_{\mu}$ samples at 8.0 {\sigma} and 6.0 {\sigma} significance, respectively, and an indication that the asymmetry dipole angle changes depending on the zenith angle was seen at the 2.2 {\sigma} level. The measured energy and azimuthal spectra are consistent with the current flux models within the estimated systematic uncertainties. A study of the long-term correlation between the atmospheric neutrino flux and the solar magnetic activity cycle is also performed, and a weak indication of a correlation was seen at the 1.1 {\sigma} level, using SK I-IV data spanning a 20 year period. For particularly strong solar activity periods known as Forbush decreases, no theoretical prediction is available, but a deviation below the typical neutrino event rate is seen at the 2.4 {\sigma} level.

The differential cross sections for neutron-proton elastic charge-exchange scattering have been measured with a two-arm technique for incident neutron momenta between 22 and 65 GeV/ c and for values of the momentum transfer squared between 0.002 and 0.8 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The sharp forward peak observed previously at lower energies is also present at momenta up to 65 GeV/ c ; however the s dependence of the cross section is slowing down.

The analyzing powers of π+ and π− were measured using an incident 22−GeV/c transversely polarized proton beam at the Brookhaven Alternating Gradient Synchrotron. A magnetic spectrometer measured π± inclusive asymmetries on a hydrogen and a carbon target. An elastic polarimeter with a CH2 target measured pp elastic-scattering asymmetries to determine the beam polarization using published data for the pp elastic analyzing power. Using the beam polarization determined from the elastic polarimeter and asymmetries from the inclusive spectrometer, analyzing powers AN for π± were determined in the xF and pT ranges (0.45–0.8) and (0.3–1.2 GeV/c), respectively. The analyzing power results are similar in both sign and character to other measurements at 200 and 11.7 GeV/c, confirming the expectation that high-energy pion inclusive analyzing powers remain large and relatively energy independent. This suggests that pion inclusive polarimetry may be a suitable method for measuring future beam polarizations at BNL RHIC or DESY HERA. Analyzing powers of π+ and π− produced on hydrogen and carbon targets are the same. Various models to explain inclusive analyzing powers are also discussed.

Bubble chamber film of 10 GeV/ c K − p interactions was scanned automatically by an H.P.D. to look for small angle scatters in the | t |-range from 0.008 to 0.1 GeV 2 . Combining the 1800 events so obtained with 22 000 elastic events obtained from normal scanning (| t | > 0.06 GeV 2 ), the real part of the elastic scattering amplitude was found to be (+25 ± 10)% of the imaginary part. Evidence is found for a change in slope in the differential cross-section distribution, from 9.8 ± 0.6 GeV −2 in the | t |-range below 0.1 GeV 2 to 7.1 ± 0.2 GeV −2 in the range 0.12 < | t | ⩽ 0.4 GeV 2 .

The inclusive production of π ± mesons in e + e − annihilation has been measured at c.m. energies of 14, 22 and 34 GeV for pion momenta between 0.3 ans 10 GeV/ c . The fraction of pions among the charged hadrons is above 90% at 0.4 GeV/ c and decreases to about 50% at high momenta. The scaled cross sections ( s β ) d σ d x at 14, 22 and 34 GeV as well as the 5.2 GeV data from DASP have a rather similar x dependence. After integration over the x range from 0.2 to 0.6 the cross sections indicate a monotonic decrease with increasing centre-of-mass energy.

The spin rotation parameter R has been measured for elastic π − p scattering at 40 GeV/ c , at four momentum transfers t ranging from −0.19 to −0.52 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The average value within this interval is R π − p = -0.200± 0.023. The resulting constraints on the πN scattering amplitudes are discussed. We have measured the cross section, the distribution of scattering angles, and the distribution of noncoplanarity angles for electron-positron elastic scattering at 5 GeV c. m. energy. An analysis based on 230 events with scattering angles between 50 and 130° yields a ratio of the experimental to theoretical quantum-electrodynamic cross section of 1.03 ± 0.09. The scattering-angle and noncoplanarity-angle distributions are also found to be in excellent agreement with the quantum-electrodynamic predictions.

Direct photon production cross sections obtained in high statistics p ̄ p and pp collisions at s =24.3 GeV at the CERN SPS are used in a next-to-leading order QCD analysis. From the cross section difference σ( p ̄ p → γX)−σ(pp → γX) and quark distributions measured in deep inelastic scattering, a determination of the strong coupling constant, α s , is performed via a measurement of Λ (4) MS . This measurement yields a value Λ (4) MS = 210±22 ( stat. )±44 ( syst. ) +105 −36 ( theo. ) MeV.
