Measurements are presented of the inclusive π 0 production cross section, in the transverse momentum range 2.3 ⪅ p T ⪅4.5 GeV/c, for dd and dp interactions at total c.m. energies of √ s = 52.7 GeV and √ s = 63.2 GeV and for pp interactions at √ s = 52.7 GeV. The produced π 0 's are detected by identifying both protons from the decay π 0 → γγ . As in pp interactions, the data can be adequately described by a p T −n ƒ(x T ) dependence with n ≌ 8 . The data are approximately consistent with the expectations of free nucleon scattering. No significant differenceare observed in either the charged or the neutral particle distributions associated with π 0 , for dd, dp and pp interactions.

pi-p Elastic Scattering in the Energy Range 300-700 MeV

Differential cross sections for elastic π−p scattering were measured at eight energies for positive pions and seven energies for negative pions. Energies ranged from 310 to 650 MeV. These measurements were made at the 3-GeV proton synchrotron at Saclay, France. A beam of pions from an internal BeO target was directed into a liquid-hydrogen target. Fifty-one scintillation counters and a matrix-coincidence system were used to measure simultaneously elastic events at 21 angles and charged inelastic events at 78 π−p angle pairs. Events were detected by coincidence of pulses indicating the presence of an incident pion, scattered pion, and recoil proton, and the results were stored in the memory of a pulse-height analyzer. Various corrections were applied to the data and a least-squares fit was made to the results at each energy. The form of the fitting function was a power series in the cosine of the center-of-mass angle of the scattered pion. Integration under the fitted curves gave values for the total elastic cross sections (without charge exchange). The importance of certain angular-momentum states is discussed. The π−−p data are consistent with a D13 resonant state at 600 MeV, but do not necessarily require such a resonant state.

The Acceleration of Polarized Protons to 22-{GeV}/$c$ and the Measurement of Spin Spin Effects in $p$ (Polarized) + $p$ (Polarized) $\to p + p$

Accelerating polarized protons to 22 GeV/c at the Brookhaven Alternating Gradient Synchro- tron required both extensive hardware modifications and a difficult commissioning process. We had to overcome 45 strong depolarizing resonances to maintain polarization up to 22 GeV/c in this strong-focusing synchrotron. At 18.5 GeV/c we measured the analyzing power A and the spin-spin correlation parameter Ann in large- P⊥2 proton-proton elastic scattering, using the polarized proton beam and a polarized proton target. We also obtained a high-precision measurement of A at P⊥2=0.3 (GeV/c)2 at 13.3 GeV/c. At 18.5 GeV/c we found that Ann=(-2±16)% at P⊥2=4.7 (GeV/c)2, where it was about 60% near 12 GeV at the Argonne Zero Gradient Synchrotron. This sharp change suggests that spin-spin forces may have a strong and unexpected energy dependence at high P⊥2.

Antiproton-proton and proton-proton small-angle elastic scattering was measured for centre-of-mass energies s =30.6, 52.8 and 62.3 GeV at the CERN Intersectung Storage Rings. In addition, proton-proton elastic scattering was measured at s =23.5 GeV . Using the optical theorem, total cross sections are obtained with an accuracy of about 0.5% for proton-proton scattering and about 1% for antiproton-proton scattering. The measurement of the interference of the Coulomb scattering and the hadronic scattering permits a determination of the ratio of the real-to-imaginary part of the forward hadronic scattering amplitude. Also presented are measurements of the hadronic slope parameter.

The analyzing powers of π+ and π− were measured using an incident 22−GeV/c transversely polarized proton beam at the Brookhaven Alternating Gradient Synchrotron. A magnetic spectrometer measured π± inclusive asymmetries on a hydrogen and a carbon target. An elastic polarimeter with a CH2 target measured pp elastic-scattering asymmetries to determine the beam polarization using published data for the pp elastic analyzing power. Using the beam polarization determined from the elastic polarimeter and asymmetries from the inclusive spectrometer, analyzing powers AN for π± were determined in the xF and pT ranges (0.45–0.8) and (0.3–1.2 GeV/c), respectively. The analyzing power results are similar in both sign and character to other measurements at 200 and 11.7 GeV/c, confirming the expectation that high-energy pion inclusive analyzing powers remain large and relatively energy independent. This suggests that pion inclusive polarimetry may be a suitable method for measuring future beam polarizations at BNL RHIC or DESY HERA. Analyzing powers of π+ and π− produced on hydrogen and carbon targets are the same. Various models to explain inclusive analyzing powers are also discussed.

A comprehensive survey of event-by-event fluctuations of charged hadron multiplicity in relativistic heavy ions is presented. The survey covers Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 62.4 and 200 GeV, and Cu+Cu collisions sqrt(s_NN) = 22.5, 62.4, and 200 GeV. Fluctuations are measured as a function of collision centrality, transverse momentum range, and charge sign. After correcting for non-dynamical fluctuations due to fluctuations in the collision geometry within a centrality bin, the remaining dynamical fluctuations expressed as the variance normalized by the mean tend to decrease with increasing centrality. The dynamical fluctuations are consistent with or below the expectation from a superposition of participant nucleon-nucleon collisions based upon p+p data, indicating that this dataset does not exhibit evidence of critical behavior in terms of the compressibility of the system. An analysis of Negative Binomial Distribution fits to the multiplicity distributions demonstrates that the heavy ion data exhibit weak clustering properties.

The real part of the isospin-even forward-scattering amplitude of pion-nucleon scattering has been determined at a pion energy of Tπ=55 MeV by measurement of the elastic scattering of positive and negative pions on protons within the Coulomb-nuclear interference region. The value confirms the prediction of the Karlsruhe-Helsinki phase-shift analysis for that energy. These phases have been used to determine the σ term of pion-nucleon scattering by means of dispersion relations, resulting in a value for σ which is in contradiction with chiral perturbation theory of QCD.

Our data on A$_{SS}$ -- the first measurement of this observable above 800 MeV -- clearly disagrees with predictions of available of pp scattering phase shift solutions while A$_{NN}$ and A_${SL}$ are reproduced reasonably well. We show that in the direct reconstruction of the scattering amplitudes from the body of available pp elastic scattering data at 2.1 GeV the number of possible solutions is considerably reduced.

Nucl.Phys.A 581 (1995) 131-144, 1995.
Inspire Record 1389771 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.36531

The differential cross sections for the n+d elastic scattering and for the 2H(n,np)n break-up reaction in the np quasi-free scattering configuration was measured at 67 MeV. The experimental data are compared with results of the calculations based on a rigorous solution of the three-nucleon Faddeev equations using meson-exchange potentials. Good agreement is found between experiment and theory for the n+d elastic-scattering cross section while in the case of np quasi-free scattering the theoretical predictions overestimate the data at neutron angles larger than 40° by about 30%.

Polarization transfer and spin response functions in quasielastic (p(pol.),n(pol.)) reactions at 346-MeV

Phys.Rev.C 59 (1999) 3177-3195, 1999.
Inspire Record 516335 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.25695

A complete set of polarization transfer coefficients has been measured for quasielastic (p→,n→) reactions on 2H, 6Li, 12C, 40Ca, and 208Pb at a bombarding energy of 346 MeV and a laboratory scattering angle of 22° (qlab≈1.7 fm−1). The spin-longitudinal RL and spin-transverse RT response functions are extracted within a framework of a plane-wave impulse approximation with eikonal and optimal factorization approximations. The theoretically expected enhancement of RL/RT is not observed. The observed RL is consistent with the pionic enhanced RL expected by random-phase approximation (RPA) calculations. On the contrary, a large excess of the observed RT is found in comparison with RT of the quasielastic electron scattering as well as of RPA calculations. This excess masks the effect of pionic correlations in RL/RT. The theoretical calculations are performed in a distorted-wave impulse approximation with RPA correlations, which indicates that the nuclear absorption effect depends on the spin direction. This spin-direction dependence is responsible in part for the excess of RT.

Measurements of the vector analyzing power iT11 in πd elastic scattering at 49 MeV have been performed using a dynamically polarized target and a magnetic spectrometer. Data at seven π+ laboratory scattering angles between 50° and 130° were taken together with a complementary measurement at 60° for π−d elastic scattering. In general, we find agreement with models that include the πN P11 amplitude and disagreement with models that exclude or suppress it.

We have measured deep inelastic muon-deuteron scattering in the range 0.4<Q2<3.4 and 1.6<ν<5.6 GeV. We have extracted the neutron structure function and find that νW2n differs significantly from νW2p, as also found in e−d scattering. To compare μ−d and e−d scattering we form the ratio r(Q2)=(νW2)μd(νW2)ed=N(1+Q2Λ2)−2 and find N=0.925±0.038 and 1Λ2=−0.019±0.016.

By using a polarized deuteron target we have measured the asymmetry in the differential cross section for elastic scattering of protons on deuterons and for quasi-elastic scattering of protons on protons bound in deuterons between the two states of opposite polarization, normal to the scattering plane of the initial deuteron. The beam momentum was 1.21 GeV/ c . It is checked that the neutrons bound in the deuterons are polarized to approximately 20%.

We present experimental results on proton-deuteron and deuteron-deuteron elastic scattering measured at the two highest ISR energies, √ s = 53 GeV and √ s = 63 GeV. The data cover the single- and multiple-scattering regions over a wide interval of four-momentum transfer t . In both reactions we find clear evidence for a substantial t -dependent contribution of inelastic intermediate states in the multiple-scattering region, as well as in single scattering. In the analysis we use the Glauber multiple-scattering theory extended to include inelastic shadow effects. This extension of the basic theory contains as input a triple-Regge parametrization describing the high-mass inclusive spectrum. The analysis of inelastic corrections to multiple scattering on deuterons at high energies is shown to provide a sensitive test of different parametrization of inclusive production in proton-proton collisions.

The three polarization tensor components of the deuteron produced in the H( p , d )π + reaction have been measured for the first time. The experiment was performed using a vertically polarized proton beam produced by the SATURNE accelerator. The deuteron polarization was measured with the POLDER polarimeter. The three polarizing powers t 20 00 , t 21 00 and t 22 00 and the three spin-transfer observables t 20 11 , t 22 11 and t 22 11 have been extracted at a proton kinetic energy of 580 MeV over a wide angular range and at two fixed center-of-mass angles, 132° and 151°, between 800 and 1300 MeV. The six observables, calculated in the C.M. helicity frame, have been compared with predictions of the most refined partial-wave analyses and also with the predictions of a theoretical coupled-channel model which includes the NN-NΔ transition. The comparison between the data and the theory/partial-wave analyses shows some discrepancies which get worse with increasing proton energy. Adding these data to the world database should improve significantly future partial-wave analyses. The A y 0 analyzing power has also been measured over the same kinematical range. The partial-wave analysis predictions are in good agreement with this observable.

In this paper, we present the differential cross sections of the Σ − p elastic scattering in the momentum region from 400 to 700 MeV /c . This is the first measurement of the Σ − p elastic scattering in the momentum region where the P- and higher waves contributions are important. The present data are in good agreement with the one boson exchange model (Bonn–Jülich model A) and the quark cluster model (FSS of Kyoto–Niigata model).

The polarization of the recoil proton has been measured in both high-energy elastic and inclusive proton-proton scattering at the internal-target area of Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. The polarization in elastic scattering was measured at a number of center-of-mass energies up to s=19.7 GeV. Indications of negative polarization were seen at the higher center-of-mass energies for t values of -0.6, -0.8, and -1.0 (GeV/c)2. In the inclusive process p+p→p↑+X the polarization was found to be independent of beam energy from 100 to 400 GeV for xF values of -0.7, -0.8, -0.9. The polarization at PT=1.0 GeV/c, xF=−0.7 and xF=−0.8 was less than 2.5%. This is significantly lower than the corresponding measurements reported for Λ0 inclusive polarization.

We have examined the inclusive production of nonstrange particle resonances in νp interactions using the Fermilab 15-ft bubble chamber. A sample of 2437 charged-current events with visible longitudinal momentum greater than 10 GeV/c was obtained. The ρ0 and Δ++(1232) are seen. An overall rate of 0.21±0.04 ρ0 per event is found. For five-prong events, the rate is 0.44±0.08 ρ0 per event. The ρ0Z distribution falls rapidly for Z greater than 0.4. The production of Δ++ is seen clearly in events with an identified proton. No evidence is seen for Δ0 production. An upper limit of 0.34 is placed on the ratio of ηπ0 (90% confidence level).
