INTEGRATION OVER RANGE OF ABS(T) FROM 0 TO 1 GEV.
Results are reported concerning the charged-particle multiplicity distribution obtained in an exposure of the high-resolution hydrogen bubble chamber LEBC to a beam of 800 GeV protons at the Fermilab MPS. This is the first time that such data have been available at this energy. The distribution of the number n ch of charged particles produced in inelastic interactions obeys KNO-scaling. The average multiplicity is 〈 n ch 〉 = 10.26±0.15. For n ch ⩾8 the data can be well fitted to a negative binomial. The difference between the overall experimental multiplicity distribution and that resulting from the latter fit is in agreement with the contribution expected from diffractive processes.

Results on \jpsi\ production in $e p$ interactionsin the H1 experiment at HERA are presented. The \jpsi\ mesons are produced by almost real photons ($Q~2\approx 0$) and detected via their leptonic decays. The data have been taken in 1994 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of $2.7\,\mbox{pb}~{-1}$. The $\gamma p$ cross section for elastic \jpsi\ production is observed to increase strongly with the \cm\ energy. The cross section for diffractive $J/\psi$ production with proton dissociation is found to be of similar magnitude as the elastic cross section. Distributions of transverse momentum and decay angle are studied and found to be in accord with a diffractive production mechanism. For inelastic \jpsi\ production the total $\gamma p$ cross section, the distribution of transverse momenta, and the elasticity of the \jpsi\ are compared to NLO QCD calculations in a colour singlet model and agreement is found. Diffractive \psiprime\ production has been observed and a first estimate of the ratio to \jpsi\ production in the HERA energy regime is given.

The Fermilab hybrid 30-in. bubble-chamber spectrometer was exposed to a tagged 147-GeV/c positive beam containing π+, K+, and p. A sample of 3003 K+p, 19410 pp, and 20745 π+p interactions is used to derive σn, 〈n〉, f2cc, and 〈nc〉D for each beam particle. These values are compared to values obtained at other, mostly lower, beam momenta. The overall dependence of 〈n〉 on Ea, the available center-of-mass energy, for these three reactions as well as π−p and pp interactions has been determined.

Reactions p p → p p and p p → n n were studied at the kinetic energy 230 MeV of incident p by using bubble chamber films. Total cross sections for both of the reactions were found to be 51.2 ± 1.6 mb and 9.1 ± 0.6 mb, respectively. Differential cross sections are well explained by the phenomenological theory given by Bryan and Phillips.

Absolute inclusive cross sections for\(\bar pp\) interactions at 7.3 GeV/c are given. The data cover prong cross sections,V0, γ production and inclusive charged particle (p/π) production. Separation has been made into annihilation and non-annihilation components. We present direct measurements of the $Z~0$-lepton coupling asymmetry parameters, $A_e$, $A_\mu$, and $A_\tau$, based on a data sample of 12,063 leptonic $Z~0$ decays collected by the SLD detector. The $Z$ bosons are produced in collisions of beams of polarized $e~-$ with unpolarized $e~+$ at the SLAC Linear Collider. The couplings are extracted from the measurement of the left-right and forward-backward asymmetries for each lepton species. The results are: $A_e=0.152 \pm 0.012 {(stat)} \pm 0.001 {(syst)}$, $A_\mu=0.102 \pm 0.034 \pm 0.002$, and $A_\tau=0.195 \pm 0.034 \pm 0.003$.

We report on a measurement of the processes e + e − →e + e − , e + e − → μ + μ − , and e + e − → τ + τ − near the Z 0 pole. On the basis of 163 e + e − , 101 μ + μ − and 87 τ + τ − events we obtain Γ ee =89±4±4 MeV, Γ μμ =85±9±6 MeV and Γ ττ =87±10±8 MeV, compatible with the standard model. Combining these with our previous results on hadronic Z 0 decays, we find a hadronic width Γ had =1787±81±90 MeV and an invisible width Γ inv =552±85±71 MeV.

We have searched for resonances in the reaction e+e−→hadrons, γγ, μμ, and ee, in the energy range 39.79<s<45.52 GeV, using the Mark J detector at PETRA. We obtain stringent upper limits on the production of toponium and particles postulated to explain Z0→leptonpair+γ events observed at the CERN p―p collider. We also set limits on the mass and coupling constant of excited electrons.
