The measurements of the differential cross section of elastic p-p scattering in relative units were performed in the energy range of 12–70 GeV. The values of the slope parameter were obtained from this data. It was shown that the slope parameter of the differential p-p scattering is monotonously increasing when the proton energy rises in the range 12–70 GeV. We have obtained the slope Pomeranchuk's pole trajectory from this data: α′ p = 0.40 ± 0.09.

Proton-proton elastic scattering has been measured over the four-momentum transfer squared 0.0007 ⩽ t ⩽ 0.02 GeV 2 /c 2 . A gas hydrogen jet has been used as an internal target of the accelerator. The results indicate that the ratio of the real to the imaginary part of the proton-proton forward scattering amplitude rises smoothly with increasing energy from α = −0.35 ± 0.05 at p = 9.39 GeV/ c to α = −0.092 ± 0.011 at p = 69.8 GeV/ c .

Coherent diffractive photoproduction of $\rho^{0}$ mesons on gold nuclei at RHIC

The STAR Collaboration reports on the photoproduction of $\pi^+\pi^-$ pairs in gold-gold collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 200 GeV/nucleon-pair. These pion pairs are produced when a nearly-real photon emitted by one ion scatters from the other ion. We fit the $\pi^+\pi^-$ invariant mass spectrum with a combination of $\rho$ and $\omega$ resonances and a direct $\pi^+\pi^-$ continuum. This is the first observation of the $\omega$ in ultra-peripheral collisions, and the first measurement of $\rho-\omega$ interference at energies where photoproduction is dominated by Pomeron exchange. The $\omega$ amplitude is consistent with the measured $\gamma p\rightarrow \omega p$ cross section, a classical Glauber calculation and the $\omega\rightarrow\pi^+\pi^-$ branching ratio. The $\omega$ phase angle is similar to that observed at much lower energies, showing that the $\rho-\omega$ phase difference does not depend significantly on photon energy. The $\rho^0$ differential cross section $d\sigma/dt$ exhibits a clear diffraction pattern, compatible with scattering from a gold nucleus, with 2 minima visible. The positions of the diffractive minima agree better with the predictions of a quantum Glauber calculation that does not include nuclear shadowing than with a calculation that does include shadowing.

We have studied the diffractive dissociation into di-jets of 500 GeV/c pions scattering coherently from carbon and platinum targets. Extrapolating to asymptotically high energies (where t_{min} approaches 0) we find that when the per-nucleus cross-section for this process is parameterized as $ \sigma = \sigma_0 A^{\alpha} $, $ \alpha $ has values near 1.6, the exact result depending on jet transverse momentum. These values are in agreement with those predicted by theoretical calculations of color-transparency.

The Sigma^- mean squared charge radius has been measured in the space-like Q^2 range 0.035-0.105 GeV^2/c^2 by elastic scattering of a Sigma^- beam off atomic electrons. The measurement was performed with the SELEX (E781) spectrometer using the Fermilab hyperon beam at a mean energy of 610 GeV/c. We obtain <r^2> = (0.61 +/- 0.12 (stat.) +/- 0.09 (syst.)) fm^2. The proton and pi^- charge radii were measured as well and are consistent with results of other experiments. Our result agrees with the recently measured strong interaction radius of the Sigma^-.

Single Spin Asymmetry $A_N$ in Polarized Proton-Proton Elastic Scattering at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV

Inspire Record 1117881 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.102952

We report a high precision measurement of the transverse single spin asymmetry $A_N$ at the center of mass energy $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV in elastic proton-proton scattering by the STAR experiment at RHIC. The $A_N$ was measured in the four-momentum transfer squared $t$ range $0.003 \leqslant |t| \leqslant 0.035$ $\GeVcSq$, the region of a significant interference between the electromagnetic and hadronic scattering amplitudes. The measured values of $A_N$ and its $t$-dependence are consistent with a vanishing hadronic spin-flip amplitude, thus providing strong constraints on the ratio of the single spin-flip to the non-flip amplitudes. Since the hadronic amplitude is dominated by the Pomeron amplitude at this $\sqrt{s}$, we conclude that this measurement addresses the question about the presence of a hadronic spin flip due to the Pomeron exchange in polarized proton-proton elastic scattering.

Results are presented on the charge exchange reaction\(\bar pp \to \bar nn\) and\(\bar np\) annihilations from bubble chamber exposures to antiproton beam of momenta 700 and 760 MeV/c. The differential cross section of\(\bar pp \to \bar nn\) shows a forward spike followed by a clear dip bump structure. Total annihilation cross section of\(\bar np\) for average\(\bar n\) momentum of 700 MeV/c has been evaluated to be 55.4±2.2 mb. The multiplicity, Feynmanx andpT2 distributions for inclusive charged pions in\(\bar pp\) and\(\bar np\) annihilations are found to be similar. The emission of charged pions from\(\bar np\) annihilations are found to be consistent with thermodynamic models with temperature ∼110 MeV.

Measurements are presented of the cross section ratios R ℓ = σ ℓ ( e + e − →ℓ + ℓ − ) σ h ( e + e − →hadrons) for ℓ=e, μ and τ using data taken from a scan around the Z 0 . The results are R e =(5.09± o .32±0.18)%, R μ =(0.46±0.35±0.17)% and R τ =(4.72±0.38±0.29)% where, for the ratio R e , the t -channel contribution has been subtracted. These results are consistent with the hypothesis of lepton universality and test this hypothesis at the energy scale s ∼8300 GeV 2 . The absolute cross sections σ ℓ (e + e − →ℓ + ℓ − ) have also been measured. From the cross sections the leptonic partial widths Γ e =(83.2±3.0±2.4) MeV, (Γ e Γ μ ) 1 2 =(84.6±3.0±2.4) MeV and (Γ e Γ τ ) 1 2 =(82.6±3.3±3.2) MeV have been extracted. We report on a measurement of the mass of the Z 0 boson, its total width, and its partial decay widths into hadrons and leptons. On the basis of 25 801 hadronic decays and 1999 decays into electrons, muons or taus, selected over eleven energy points between 88.28 GeV and 95.04 GeV, we obtain from a combined fit to hadrons and leptons a mass of M z =91.154±0.021 (exp)±0.030 (LEP) GeV, and a total width of Γ z =2.536±0.045 GeV. The errors on M z have been separated into the experimental error and the uncertainty due to the LEP beam energy. The measured leptonic partial widths are Γ ee =81.2±2.6 MeV, Γ μμ =82.6± 5.8 MeV, and Γ ττ =85.7±7.1 MeV, consistent with lepton universality. From a fit assuming lepton universality we obtain Γ ℓ + ℓ − = 81.9±2.0 MeV. The hadronic partial width is Γ had =1838±46 MeV. From the measured total and partial widths a model independent value for the invisible width is calculated to be Γ inv =453±44 MeV. The errors quoted include both the statistical and the systematic uncertainties.

The couplings of the Z 0 to charged leptons are studied using measurements of the lepton pair cross sections and forward-backward asymmetries at centre of mass energies near to the mass of the Z 0 . The data are consistent with lepton universality. Using a parametrisation of the lepton pair differential cross section which assumes that the Z 0 has only vector and axial couplings to leptons, the charged leptonic partial decay width of the Z 0 is determined to be Г ol+ol− = 83.1±1.9 MeV and the square of the product of the effective axial vector and vector coupling constants of the Z 0 to charged leptons to be a ̌ 2 ol v ̌ 2 ol = 0.0039± 0.0083 , in agreement with the standard model. A parametrisation in the form of the improved Born approximation gives effective leptonic axial vector and vector coupling constants a ̌ 2 ol = 0.998±0.024 and v ̌ 2 ol = 0.0044±0.0083 . In the framework of the standard model, the values of the parameters ϱ z and sin 2 θ w are found to be 0.998±0.024 and 0.233 +0.045 −0.012 respectively. Using the relationship in the minimal standard model between ϱ z and sin 2 θ w , the results sin 2 θ SM w = 0.233 +0.007 −0.006 is obtained. Our previously published measurement of the ratio of the hadronic to the leptonic partial width of the Z 0 is update: R z = 21.72 +0.71 −0.65 .

This final analysis of hadronic and leptonic cross-sections and of leptonic forward-backward asymmetries in e+e- collisions with the OPAL detector makes use of the full LEP1 data sample comprising 161 pb^-1 of integrated luminosity and 4.5 x 10^6 selected Z decays. An interpretation of the data in terms of contributions from pure Z exchange and from Z-gamma interference allows the parameters of the Z resonance to be determined in a model-independent way. Our results are in good agreement with lepton universality and consistent with the vector and axial-vector couplings predicted in the Standard Model. A fit to the complete dataset yields the fundamental Z resonance parameters: mZ = 91.1852 +- 0.0030 GeV, GZ = 2.4948 +- 0.0041 GeV, s0h = 41.501 +- 0.055 nb, Rl = 20.823 +- 0.044, and Afb0l = 0.0145 +- 0.0017. Transforming these parameters gives a measurement of the ratio between the decay width into invisible particles and the width to a single species of charged lepton, Ginv/Gl = 5.942 +- 0.027. Attributing the entire invisible width to neutrino decays and assuming the Standard Model couplings for neutrinos, this translates into a measurement of the effective number of light neutrino species, N_nu = 2.984 +- 0.013. Interpreting the data within the context of the Standard Model allows the mass of the top quark, mt = 162 +29-16 GeV, to be determined through its influence on radiative corrections. Alternatively, utilising the direct external measurement of mt as an additional constraint leads to a measurement of the strong coupling constant and the mass of the Higgs boson: alfa_s(mZ) = 0.127 +- 0.005 and mH = 390 +750-280 GeV.
