Inspire Record 94951 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.32420

The polarization parameter in π − p elastic scattering has been measured in the backward angular region at an incident momentum of 6 GeV/ c . The measurements cover the range of four momentum transfer u = 0 to −1 (GeV/ c ) 2 , and were obtained with a high intensity pion beam, a butanol polarized proton target, and arrays of scintillation counter hodoscopes. The polarization is different from zero, in contradiction to the prediction of the naive one trajectory Regge-exchange model. It increases positively with the four-momentum transfer u, reaching a maximum of about 0.4 at u ≈ −0.3 (GeV/c)2. It then decreases and becomes slightly negative beyond u ≈ −0.5 (GeV/c)2. A variety of baryon exchange models are briefly reviewed and none are found to be in complete agreement with all the experimental data.

The analyzing power AN of proton-proton elastic scattering in the Coulomb-nuclear interference region has been measured using the 200-GeV/c Fermilab polarized proton beam. A theoretically predicted interference between the hadronic non-spin-flip amplitude and the electromagnetic spin-flip amplitude is shown for the first time to be present at high energies in the region of 1.5 × 10−3 to 5.0 × 10−2 (GeV/c)2 four-momentum transfer squared, and our results are analyzed in connection with theoretical calculations. In addition, the role of possible contributions of the hadronic spin-flip amplitude is discussed.

Excitation functions AN(pp,Θc.m.) of the analyzing power in pp→ elastic scattering have been measured with a polarized atomic hydrogen target for projectile momenta pp between 1000 and 3300 MeV/ c. The experiment was performed for scattering angles 30°≤Θc.m.≤90° using the recirculating beam of the proton storage ring COSY during acceleration. The resulting excitation functions and angular distributions of high internal consistency have significant impact on the recent phase shift solution SAID SP99, in particular, on the spin triplet phase shifts between 1000 and 1800 MeV, and demonstrate the limited predictive power of single-energy phase shift solutions at these energies.

Compton scattering from the proton was investigated at s=6.9 (GeV/c)**2 and \t=-4.0 (GeV/c)**2 via polarization transfer from circularly polarized incident photons. The longitudinal and transverse components of the recoil proton polarization were measured. The results are in excellent agreement with a prediction based on a reaction mechanism in which the photon interacts with a single quark carrying the spin of the proton and in disagreement with a prediction of pQCD based on a two-gluon exchange mechanism.

Data are presented from a high statistics bubble chamber experiment to study K − p interactions in the c.m. energy range 1775 to 1957 MeV. For the reactions K − p → K − p, K − p → K 0 n , K − p → Λπ 0 and K − p → Σ ± π ∓ channel cross sections, differential cross sections and, where appropriate, polarisation distributions have been obtained. The channel cross sections for K − p → Σ 0 π 0 are presented. In general the results are in agreement with those previously published although a significant discrepancy has been found in the Σ ± π ∓ cross sections at the lower energies. New measurements of the Σ ± lifetimes have also been obtained ( τ Σ − = 1.49 ± 0.03 × 10 −10 sec, τ Σ + = 0.807 ± 0.013 × 10 −10 sec).

The polarization parameter P has been measured for elastic π + p, K + p and pp scattering at 45 GeV/c. Four-momentum transfer ranges from −0.08 to −1.1 (GeV/) 2 for pp, and from −0.08 to −0.9 (GeV/) 2 for π + p and K + p. The energy dependence of the polarization P ( t ) in π + p and in K + p above 6 GeV/c incident momentum is compatible with interference between pomeron and Regge poles. On the other hand, the polarization in p p elastic scattering decreases faster than ordinary Regge model predictions. This result can be explained by interference between non flip and flip amplitudes of the pomeron, leading to negative values for the polarization.

The energy dependence of P (t) in π − p above 10 GeV/ c is well fitted by P (t) α s αR(t)-α P (t) where α R (t) are the effective Regge and Pomeron trajectories respectively. The data in K − p are compatible with exchange degeneracy. The results inp¯p show an important structure for |t|> 0.3 (GeV/c) 2 demonstrating the existence of a large helicity flip amplitude.

We present the first measurements of the double spin asymmetries A_NN and A_SS at sqrt{s}=200 GeV, obtained by the pp2pp experiment using polarized proton beams at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The data were collected in the four momentum transfer t range 0.01<|t|<0.03 (GeV/c)^2. The measured asymmetries, which are consistent with zero, allow us to estimate upper limits on the double helicity-flip amplitudes phi_2 and phi_4 at small t as well as on the difference Delta(sigma_T) between the total cross sections for transversely polarized protons with antiparallel or parallel spin orientations.

Measurements are presented for several mixtures of the spin observables CSS,CSL=CLS, CLL, and CNN for neutron-proton elastic scattering. These data were obtained with a free polarized neutron beam, a polarized proton target, and a large magnetic spectrometer for the outgoing proton. The neutron beam kinetic energies were 484, 567, 634, 720, and 788 MeV. Combining these results with earlier measurements allows the determination of the pure spin observables CSS, CLS, and CLL at 484, 634, and 788 MeV for c.m. angles 25°≤θc.m.≤180° and at 720 MeV for 35°≤θc.m.≤80°. These data make a significant contribution to the knowledge of the isospin-0 nucleon-nucleon scattering amplitudes. © 1996 The American Physical Society.

Measurements have been made of the asymmetry in the scattering of π− mesons by a polarized proton target. Scattered π mesons and recoil protons were detected in arrays of scintillation counters; data were obtained at 16 scattering angles at each of 8 beam momenta between 875 and 1578 MeV/c. An experiment resulting in the first measurement of the isospin-mixing, charge-symmetry-violating component of the n−p interaction has been performed. The experiment determined the difference in the angles of the zero crossing of the neutron and proton analyzing powers An and Ap at 477 MeV. In terms of the laboratory scattering angle of the neutron, the measured difference is θ0n(An)−θ0n(Ap)=+0.13° ±0.06° (±0.03°), where the second error is a worst-case estimate of systematic error. The resulting difference in the analyzing powers at the zero-crossing angle is An−Ap=+0.0037 ±0.0017 (±0.0008).
