The analyzing power for elastic pd scattering at 3.5 GeV has been measured in the region 0.1⩽−t⩽1.5 (GeV/ c ) 2 , using the polarized proton beam at KEK. The angular distribution shows a behavior similar to that in the lower energy region. It is reproduced fairly well by the predictions of a multiple scattering model based on the Glauber theory.

The effect of isospin-violating, charge-symmetry-breaking (CSB) terms in the np interaction has been observed at TRIUMF by measuring the difference in the zero-crossing angles of the neutron and proton analyzing powers, An and Ap, at a neutron energy of 477 MeV. The scattering asymmetries were measured with a neutron beam incident on a polarizable proton target. To reduce systematic errors, interleaved measurements of An and Ap were made using the same beam and target (apart from their respective polarization states). Neutrons and protons were detected in coincidence in the center-of-mass angle range from 59°–80°. The difference in zero-crossing angles was 0.340°±0.162° (±0.058°), which yields ΔA≡An-Ap=0.0047±0.0022 (±0.0008) using dA/dθc.m.=−0.01382 deg−1. The second errors represent systematic effects. This result is in good agreement with recent theoretical calculations which include CSB effects due to the np mass difference in π, ρ, and 2π exchange, electromagnetic coupling of the neutron anomalous magnetic moment to the proton current, ρ-ω-meson mixing, and short- and medium-range effects of the up- and down-quark mass difference.

Parity nonconservation in proton-proton scattering has been studied by measuring the angle-integrated longitudinal analyzing power A z . We found A z (13.6 MeV)=(−1.5±0.5)×10 −7 . The error includes uncertainties due to statistics and corrections, as well as upper limits on systematic effects. The experimental result is discussed with respect to recent theoretical calculations.

The analyzing power for proton-carbon elastic scattering in the coulomb-nuclear interference region of momentum transfer, $9.0\times10^{-3}<-t<4.1\times10^{-2}$ (GeV/$c)^{2}$, was measured with a 21.7 GeV/$c$ polarized proton beam at the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron of Brookhaven National Laboratory. The ratio of hadronic spin-flip to non-flip amplitude, $r_5$, was obtained from the analyzing power to be $\text{Re} r_5=0.088\pm 0.058$ and $\text{Im} r_5=-0.161\pm 0.226$.
The analyzing power as a function of the momentum transfer T. The two DSYS errors are (1) the systematic error in the raw asymmetry and (2) that in the polarization of the beam.
The tensor analyzing power T 20 for the p ( d , p d) and p ( d , p ) pn reactions θ cm p = 180° have been measured at incident deuteron momenta from 3.5 to 6.5 GeV/ c . For both reactions T 20 remains negative up to internal momentum k ⋍ 0.85 GeV/ c and show a rich structure beyond the region where T 20 is expected to be determined by the S - and D -states of the deuteron. The T 20 data for deuteron breakup without pion production, close to the backward elastic kinematics, were obtained simultaneously with the elastic data.

Elastic scattering of linearly polarized photons on protons has been measured between 3.2 and 3.7 GeV for four-momentum transfers ranging from −0.1 to −0.7 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The observed cross section asymmetry in this range is consistent with zero within ±0.05.

The polarization transfer κ 0 and the tensor analyzing power T 20 for the 1 H d p)d reaction have been measured up to an internal momentum of k = 0.58 GeV/c. Comparison of the same observables obtained in recent studies for 1 H d p)d reaction, as a function of k , show different behavior. However the data from these two reactions are almost identical when compared in T 20 versus κ 0 correlation plots. We discuss similarities and differences observed in the two reactions.

The analyzing power AN of proton-proton elastic scattering in the Coulomb-nuclear interference region has been measured using the 200-GeV/c Fermilab polarized proton beam. A theoretically predicted interference between the hadronic non-spin-flip amplitude and the electromagnetic spin-flip amplitude is shown for the first time to be present at high energies in the region of 1.5 × 10−3 to 5.0 × 10−2 (GeV/c)2 four-momentum transfer squared, and our results are analyzed in connection with theoretical calculations. In addition, the role of possible contributions of the hadronic spin-flip amplitude is discussed.

We present herein the initial results of a large-angle elastic p−p polarization experiment which is now in progress at the Argonne ZGS (Zero-Gradient Synchrotron) accelerator. Data for the incident proton momentum of 5.15 GeVc are presented for 30∘≲θc.m.≲90∘. These results, which extend to t≈−4.0(GeVc)2, represent the first high-statistics p−p polarization measurements for |t| values greater than ∼2.5 (GeVc)2. We observe a minimum in the polarization near t=−0.8(GeVc)2, a smooth increase in the polarization until a maximum is attained near t=−1.8(GeVc)2, and then a monotonic decline in the polarization until the value of zero is reached at θc.m.=90∘. The data are analyzed in terms of an optical model.

In an experiment at the Argonne Zero-Gradient Synchrotron we have measured values of the polarization parameter P(t) in the elastic scattering of negative pions, positive pions, positive kaons, and protons on protons at several incident laboratory momenta from 2.50 to 5.15 GeVc, and for values of the momentum transfer variable −t from 0.2 to 2.0 (GeVc)2. The final results from p−p elastic scattering presented here extend our knowledge of the polarization to much larger values of −t than the results of previous measurements. Outstanding features revealed by these polarization data include (1) the development of a dip at about −t=0.7 (GeVc)2, with (2) a substantial secondary peak at larger values of −t and (3) the gradual diminution of the maximum polarization with increasing energy. It is possible to fit the t dependence of the experimental results with a simple model. The energy dependence of the polarized cross sections is also discussed.

The polarization parameter in proton-proton elastic scattering has been measured at an incident momentum of 7.9 GeV/ c and four-momentum transfers in the range 0.9 < | t | < 6.5 (GeV/ c ) 2 using a high intensity unpolarized proton beam incident on a polarized proton target. The angle and momentum of the forward scattered protons were measured with a magnet spectrometer and scintillation counter hodoscopes and the angle of the recoil proton was measured using similar hodoscopes. A clean separation between the elastic scattering from free hydrogen and that coming from inelastic interactions and from interactions with complex nuclei in the target was obtained. The polarization shows substantial structure rising from zero at | t | = 1.0 (GeV/ c ) 2 to a maximum at | t | = 1.7 (GeV/ c ) 2 and then falling to zero at | t | = 2.0 (GeV/ c ) 2 . There is evidence of a further peak at | t | = 2.8 (GeV/ c ) 2 . Above | t | = 3.25 (GeV/ c ) 2 the polarization is small and consistent with zero. A comparison of these data with data obtained at other beam momenta shows that the polarization parameter has a strong momentum dependence.

We report our first measurements of the polarization in the elastic scattering of negative pions from polarized protons at an incident pion momentum of 40 GeV/ c . The momentum-transfer region covered was 0.08 < | t | < 1.3 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The angular distribution of the polarization exhibits a first minimum of ∼ − 5% and the well-known zero around t ≈ − 0.6 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The polarization parameter in π±p elastic scattering has been measured at several momenta in the range 2.50-5.15 GeV/c pion laboratory momentum and covering the range in t approximately from -0.2 to -2.0(GeV/c)2. The data show positive polarization for π±p scattering, having a dip near t=−0.6 (GeV/c)2 and becoming relatively large at greater values of −t. The results for π+ and π− scattering are approximately equal in magnitude but of opposite sign. The data have been analyzed to separate the components, which are symmetric and antisymmetric with respect to pion charge, and to show both the t and s dependence of each part.

The polarization of the recoil proton in π+p and π−p elastic scattering using a liquid-hydrogen target has been measured for backward angles at 547 and 625 MeV/c. The scattered pion and recoil proton were detected in coincidence using the large-acceptance spectrometer to detect and analyze the momentum of the pions and the JANUS polarimeter to identify and measure the polarization of the protons. Results from this experiment agree with other measurements of the recoil polarization, with analyzing-power data previously taken by this group, and with predictions of partial-wave analyses.

The spin analyzing power A in 28-GeV/c proton-proton elastic scattering was measured at P⊥2=6.5 (GeV/c)2 using a polarized proton target and a high-intensity unpolarized proton beam at the Brookhaven National Laboratory Alternating Gradient Synchrotron. The analyzing power A in 28-GeV/c proton-proton elastic scattering was measured with a polarized proton target and a high-intensity unpolarized proton beam at the Brook-haven National Laboratory alternating-gradient synchrotron. The P⊥2 range of 2.85 to 5.95 (GeV/c)2 was covered with good precision. A small dip of about -3.5% was found near P⊥2=3.5 (GeV/c)2 where a 24-GeV/c CERN experiment had reported a deep dip of about -16% with large errors. In the previously unexplored large-P⊥2 region near 6 (GeV/c)2 these new large-error points suggest that A may be rising.

The analyzing power, A, was measured in proton-proton elastic scattering with use of a polarized proton target and 28-GeV/c primary protons from the alternating-gradient synchrotron. Over the P⊥2 range of 0.5 to 2.8 (GeV/c)2, the data show interesting structure. There is a rather sharp dip at P⊥2=0.8 (GeV/c)2 corresponding to the break in the elastic differential cross section at the end of the diffraction peak.

The analyzing power in 28 GeV/c proton/proton elastic scattering was measured at P2∥=5.95 and 6.56 (GeV/c)2 using a polarized proton target and an unpolarized proton beam at the Brookhaven National Laboratory AGS. Results indicate that the analyzing power, A, is rising sharply with P2∥.

We measured the analyzing power A out to P⊥2=7.1 (GeV/c)2 with high precision by scattering a 24-GeV/c unpolarized proton beam from the new University of Michigan polarized proton target; the target’s 1-W cooling power allowed a beam intensity of more than 2×1011 protons per pulse. This high beam intensity together with the unexpectedly high average target polarization of about 85% allowed unusually accurate measurements of A at large P⊥2. These precise data confirmed that the one-spin parameter A is nonzero and indeed quite large at high P⊥2; most theoretical models predict that A should go to zero.
Errors quoted contain both statistical and systematic uncertainties.
The asymmetry in the scattering of π− mesons by polarized protons has been measured at 50 different momenta from 0.643 to 2.14 GeV/c. Results were obtained at values of cosθ ranging from approximately +0.9 to -0.95 in the c.m. system at each incident pion momentum. The pion beam was incident on a 7.6-cm-long crystal assembly of lanthanum magnesium nitrate, in which the hydrogen in the water of crystallization was polarized by the "solid effect." The total momentum spread of the beam was 10% (full width at half-height) and data were collected simultaneously in 4 momentum channels, each with 2½% full width at half-height. A gas Čherenkov counter was used to reject incoming electrons. Scattered particles were detected in scintillation counter arrays placed within the 10-cm gap of the polarized target magnet. Encoded information from each array was stored in the memory of a PDP-5 computer connected on-line to a fast electronic logic network. The computer was programmed to classify the events according to momentum and scattering angle and subdivide them into coplanar and noncoplanar categories. The latter provided a measure of the background. The results have been expressed in the form of an expansion in terms of first associated Legendre polynomial series and compared with the predictions of recent phase-shift solutions. It is concluded that although these analyses give satisfactory predictions of the general features of the results, no one solution gives complete agreement with the data above about 1.0 GeV/c.

Excitation functions AN(pp,Θc.m.) of the analyzing power in pp→ elastic scattering have been measured with a polarized atomic hydrogen target for projectile momenta pp between 1000 and 3300 MeV/ c. The experiment was performed for scattering angles 30°≤Θc.m.≤90° using the recirculating beam of the proton storage ring COSY during acceleration. The resulting excitation functions and angular distributions of high internal consistency have significant impact on the recent phase shift solution SAID SP99, in particular, on the spin triplet phase shifts between 1000 and 1800 MeV, and demonstrate the limited predictive power of single-energy phase shift solutions at these energies.

We have measured the polarization for elastic scattering in the reaction π−p→π−p at 2.93 and 3.25 GeV/c using a polarized proton target and multiwire proportional chambers (MWPC's) with emphasis on large-angle scattering. Events were selected by fast scintillation-counter logic. Beam trajectories were measured with four MWPC's and the scattered-particle angles were measured with one or two MWPC's; elastic events were determined by coplanarity and angle-angle correlations. The polarization is in agreement with previous measurements below |t|=2.0 (GeV/c)2, and crosses from negative to positive near the secondary dip in the differential cross section dσdt. In the backward region, an energy dependence appears with the polarization being large and negative at 2.93 GeV/c and consistent with zero at 3.25 GeV/c.

Data are presented on the polarization parameter in pp and pn elastic scattering at 11.8 GeV/c for four-momentum transfers −t=0.15 to 0.9 GeV2. In contrast to lower energies where the pn polarization is positive, it is slightly negative at 11.8 GeV/c; averaging the data from −t=0.18 to 0.5 GeV2 we find P(pn)=(−0.9±0.5)%, to be compared with P(pp)=(5.6±0.8)%. These data, combined with our previous data at lower energies, show that the I=0 single-flip exchange amplitude has an anomalously rapid energy dependence.

We have measured the polarization parameter in π−p elastic scattering at laboratory momenta of 1180, 1250, and 1360 MeV/c in the angular interval 65°<θc.m.<115°. The results were used to show that the polarized target used in these (and other similar) experiments was uniformly polarized. These measurements were also used to resolve pre-existing experimental discrepancies in the determination of the polarization parameter, and to clarify the behavior of scattering amplitudes in this energy range. We show that local measurements of this type are important in resolving discrete ambiguities affecting the energy continuation of the amplitudes. An important by-product of this experiment is the development of a fast method of reconstructing particle trajectories and fitting the elastic events, which could have a significant impact for future high-statistics experiments.

A precise measurement of the analyzing power $A_N$ in proton-proton elastic scattering in the region of 4-momentum transfer squared $0.001 < |t| < 0.032 ({\rm GeV}/c)^2$ has been performed using a polarized atomic hydrogen gas jet target and the 100 GeV/$c$ RHIC proton beam. The interference of the electromagnetic spin-flip amplitude with a hadronic spin-nonflip amplitude is predicted to generate a significant $A_N$ of 4--5%, peaking at $-t \simeq 0.003 ({\rm GeV}/c)^2$. This kinematic region is known as the Coulomb Nuclear Interference region. A possible hadronic spin-flip amplitude modifies this otherwise calculable prediction. Our data are well described by the CNI prediction with the electromagnetic spin-flip alone and do not support the presence of a large hadronic spin-flip amplitude.
