We have carried out a systematic study of the coherent dissociation of pions into 3 pions using nuclear targets. The experiment was performed at Fermilab using a high resolution forward spectrometer. Data were taken with carbon, copper and lead targets at an incident momentum of 202.5 GeV/c. Results are presented on momentum transfers, 3-pion masses, and on the nuclearA-dependence of the production cross section.

pp-elastic differential cross sections are reported at 492 MeV from 40° to 90°, and at 576, 642, 728, and 793 MeV from 75° to 90° c.m., with an absolute accuracy of less than 1%. These data, obtained with polyethylene targets, agree with recent measurements at the same energies obtained with a liquid-hydrogen target. © 1996 The American Physical Society.

Absolute pp-elastic-differential cross sections were measured at incident energies 492, 576, 642, 728, and 793 MeV from about 30° to 90° c.m. The total uncertainty was determined to be less than 1%, made possible by particle counting for beam normalization and extensive cross-checks of systematic effects. These new data are consistent with previous data above 600 MeV but have uncertainties about a factor of 10 smaller. Near 500 MeV these data are consistent with 90° data from TRIUMF, but differ significantly from similar data from PSI; the cause of this discrepancy is discussed.

We have measured the differential cross section of the reaction π − p→ π − p in the range 0.92 ⩽ cos θ c.m. ⩽ 0.99 at 15 momenta between 0.875 and 1.580 GeV/ c . The results we report complete the available data; previous measurements of this reaction do not extend beyond cos θ c.m. =0.90. We compare our experimental results with dispersion relation predictions. A comparison of our results for B , the slope of the differential cross section, with earlier results shows many discrepancies.

A tagged medium-energy neutron beam has been used in a precise measurement of the absolute differential cross section for np back-scattering. The results resolve significant discrepancies within the np database concerning the angular dependence in this regime. The experiment has determined the absolute normalization with 1.5% uncertainty, suitable to verify constraints of supposedly comparable precision that arise from the rest of the database in partial wave analyses. The analysis procedures, especially those associated with evaluation of systematic errors in the experiment, are described in detail so that systematic uncertainties may be included in a reasonable way in subsequent partial wave analysis fits incorporating the present results.

Σ + p elastic scattering has been studied using a scintillating fiber block (SCIFI) which served as a target for the production of Σ + hyperons as well as for subsequent Σ + scattering on hydrogen. A new technique for the analysis of the hyperon-nucleon scattering in the SCIFI has been developed and established. In this paper, Σ + p elastic scattering events have been identified in the Σ + momentum range of 300–600 MeV/ c , and differential cross sections have been obtained at two angles. The results are compared with various theoretical baryon-baryon interaction models.

The differential cross sections of the elastic p p reaction have been measured at 1.2, 1.4, 1.8 and 2.6 GeV/ c incident p momentum. The measurements have been performed at the CERN PS using a system of multiwire proportional chambers. The angular region covers scattering angles from 0 to ∼200 mrad. Interference effects between the Coulomb and the nuclear amplitudes are used to derive the ratio of the real to imaginary part of the forward nuclear amplitude. These ratios are compared with theoretical predictions.

The backward differential cross section for π−−d elastic scattering has been measured at incident momenta between 420 and 1160 MeV/c. The data show two bumps at around 670 and 1100 MeV/c, two dips near 630 and 980 MeV/c, and a break at 550 MeV/c. The result of a phenonomenological fit is consistent with the existence of three dibaryon resonances in this energy region. A theoretical calculation of Kanai et al. agrees well with the data below 800 MeV/c, but the agreement becomes worse above 800 MeV/c.

The differential cross sections and vector analyzing powers for nd elastic scattering at En=248 MeV were measured for 10°–180° in the center-of-mass (c.m.) system. To cover the wide angular range, the experiments were performed separately by using two different setups for forward and backward angles. The data are compared with theoretical results based on Faddeev calculations with realistic nucleon-nucleon (NN) forces such as AV18, CD Bonn, and Nijmegen I and II, and their combinations with the three-nucleon forces (3NFs), such as Tucson-Melbourne 99 (TM99), Urbana IX, and the coupled-channel potential with Δ-isobar excitation. Large discrepancies are found between the experimental cross sections and theory with only 2N forces for θc.m.>90°. The inclusion of 3NFs brings the theoretical cross sections closer to the data but only partially explains this discrepancy. For the analyzing power, no significant improvement is found when 3NFs are included. Relativistic corrections are shown to be small for both the cross sections and the analyzing powers at this energy. For the cross sections, these effects are mostly seen in the very backward angles. Compared with the pd cross section data, quite significant differences are observed at all scattering angles that cannot be explained only by the Coulomb interaction, which is usually significant at small angles.
