We have measured the spin-transfer parameters KLL, KSL, KLS, and KSS at 635 MeV from 50° to 178° c.m. and at 485 MeV from 74° to 176° c.m. These new data have a significant impact on the phase-shift analyses. There are now sufficient data near these energies to overdetermine the elastic nucleon-nucleon amplitudes.

In order to improve existing I=0 phase shift solutions, the spin correlation parameter ANN and the analyzing powers A0N and AN0 have been measured in n-p elastic scattering over an angular range of 50°–150° (c.m.) at three neutron energies (220, 325, and 425 MeV) to an absolute accuracy of ±0.03. The data have a profound effect on various phase parameters, particularly the P11, D23, and ε1 phase parameters which in some cases change by almost a degree. With the exception of the highest energy, the data support the predictions of the latest version of the Bonn potential. Also, the analyzing power data (A0N and AN0) measured at 477 MeV in a different experiment over a limited angular range [60°–80° (c.m.)] are reported here.

The elastic cross section for proton proton scattering at 11.75 GeV/ c was measured at the Argonne ZGS using a 50% polarized target. In the range p ⊥ 2 =0.6 → 2.2 (GeV/ c ) 2 we obtained precise measurements of d σ d t(ij) for the ⇈ ⇊, and ⇅ initial spin states perpendicular to the scattering plane. We confirmed that the asymmetry parameter, A , decreases with energy in the diffraction peak, but is approximately energy-independent at large p ⊥ 2 . We found that the spin correlation parameter c nn acquires rather dramatic structure, and at large p ⊥ 2 seems to grow with energy.

We measured dσdt for p+p→p+p at 11.75 GeV/c using the zero-gradient synchrotron 70% polarized-proton beam and a 65% polarized-proton target. We obtained the spin-orbit asymmetry parameter A and the spin-spin correlation parameter Cm out to P⊥2=4.2 (GeV/c)2. We found that A drops smoothly towards zero, but that Cnn increases abruptly near P⊥2=3.6 (GeV/c)2, where the exp(−1.4P⊥2) component of elastic scattering becomes dominant. This suggests that large-P⊥2 "hard" elastic scattering may occur mostly when the two proton spins are parallel.

Toward the goal of experimentally determining the p-p elastic-scattering amplitudes at 6 GeV/c, we have measured a number of triple- and double-spin correlation parameters over the ‖t‖ range between 0.2 and 1.0 (GeV/c)2. These new data permit the first nucleon-nucleon amplitude determination in the multi-GeV energy range. Polarized beams from the Argonne Zero Gradient Synchrotron and polarized targets were utilized. The polarization of the recoil proton was measured with a carbon polarimeter. A total of 14 different spin observables were measured (five spin transfer, four depolarization, and five triple-spin correlation parameters). These have been combined with earlier results, resulting in a data set of typically 30 measurements of 20 different spin observables for each of six ‖t‖ values between 0.2 and 1.0 (GeV/c)2. A solution for the amplitudes has been found at each ‖t‖, and comparisons are presented with several different models. The spin-nonflip helicity amplitudes are found to be much larger than the spin-flip amplitudes.

Toward the goal of experimentally determining pp elastic scattering amplitudes at 6 GeV/c, we have measured a linear combination of triple-spin correlation parameters and also a linear combination of spintransfer parameters over the |t| range between 0.2 and 1.0 (GeV/c)2. A horizontally polarized beam (S direction) was obtained by precessing the spin of the polarized beam from the Argonne Zero Gradient Synchrotron using a superconducting solenoid. The target protons were polarized vertically (N direction) and the polarization of the recoil protons was measured with a carbon polarimeter. The results are consistent with the amplitude corresponding to π exchange being almost real and positive.

At the Cooler Synchrotron COSY/J\ulich spin correlation parameters in elastic proton-proton (pp) scattering have been measured with a 2.11 GeV polarized proton beam and a polarized hydrogen atomic beam target. We report results for A$_{NN}$, A$_{SS}$, and A_${SL}$ for c.m. scattering angles between 30$^o$ and 90$^o$. Our data on A$_{SS}$ -- the first measurement of this observable above 800 MeV -- clearly disagrees with predictions of available of pp scattering phase shift solutions while A$_{NN}$ and A_${SL}$ are reproduced reasonably well. We show that in the direct reconstruction of the scattering amplitudes from the body of available pp elastic scattering data at 2.1 GeV the number of possible solutions is considerably reduced.

The measured asymmetries, which are consistent with zero, allow us to estimate upper limits on the double helicity-flip amplitudes phi_2 and phi_4 at small t as well as on the difference Delta(sigma_T) between the total cross sections for transversely polarized protons with antiparallel or parallel spin orientations.

Precise measurements of deuteron vector and tensor analyzing powers Ayd, Axx, Ayy, and Axz in d−p elastic scattering were performed via 1H(d→,d)p and 1H(d→,p)d reactions at three incoming deuteron energies of Edlab=140, 200, and 270 MeV. A wide range of center-of-mass angles from ≈10° to 180° was covered. The cross section was measured at 140 and 270 MeV at the same angles. These high precision data were compared with theoretical predictions based on exact solutions of three-nucleon Faddeev equations and modern nucleon-nucleon potentials combined with three-nucleon forces. Three-body interactions representing a wide range of present day models have been used: the Tucson-Melbourne 2π-exchange model, a modification thereof closer to chiral symmetry, the Urbana IX model, and a phenomenological spin-orbit ansatz. Large three-nucleon force effects are predicted, especially at the two higher energies. However, only some of them, predominantly dσ/dΩ and Ayd, are supported by the present data. For tensor analyzing powers the predicted effects are in drastic conflict to the data, indicating defects of the present day three-nucleon force models.

The range of center-of-mass angles was 10°–165° for the cross section and the analyzing power, and about 10°–95° for the polarization transfer coefficients. These are the first measurements of a complete set of proton polarization observables for p→d elastic scattering at intermediate energies. The present data are compared with theoretical predictions based on exact solutions of the three-nucleon Faddeev equations and modern realistic nucleon-nucleon potentials combined with three-nucleon forces (3NF), namely, the Tucson-Melbourne (TM) 2π-exchange model, a modification thereof (TM′) closer to chiral symmetry, and the Urbana IX model. Large effects of the three-nucleon forces are predicted. The inclusion of the three-nucleon forces gives a good description of the cross section at angles below the minimum. However, appreciable discrepancies between the data and predictions remain at backward angles. For the spin observables the predictions of the TM 3NF model deviate strongly from the other two 3NF models, which are close together, except for Kyy′. In the case of the analyzing power all 3NF models fail to describe the data at the upper half of the angular range. In the restricted measured angular range the polarization transfer coefficients are fairly well described by the TM′ and Urbana IX 3NF models, whereas the TM 3NF model mostly fails. The transfer coefficient Kyy′ is best described by the Urbana IX but the theoretical description is still insufficient to reproduce the experimental data. These results call for a better understanding of the spin structure of the three-nucleon force and very likely for a full relativistic treatment of the three-nucleon continuum.

We have measured the difference between the pp total cross-sections for parallel and anti-parallel longitudinal spin states at beam momenta of 3 and 6 GeV/ c . These results, combined with our previous measurements, at lower momenta, are useful in clarifying a striking structure appearing at around 1.5 GeV/ c . We have also measured for the first time, the spin-spin correlation parameter C LL ( t ) in pp elastic scattering at 6 GeV/ c . We observe evidence for an exchange with A 1 -like quantum-numbers.

NOTE: HIGHER -T DATA ARE BEING ANALYSED. PUBLISHED GRAPH HAS LARGER ERRORS.

THESE NUMBERS APPEAR TO UPDATE THOSE REPORTED IN I. P. AUER ET AL., PRL 37, 1727 (76). NOTE: DATA MAY HAVE SMALLER ERROR BARS IN THE FINAL ANALYSIS.

NOTE: MORE DATA ARE BEING ANALYSED. SINCE THE POLARIZED TARGET MAGNETIC FIELD WAS TILTED AT 18 DEG AWAY FROM THE BEAM DIRECTION, THE MEASURED CSL CONTAINS AN ADMIXTURE OF CSS. THE CSL VALUES QUOTED HERE HAVE BEEN CORRECTED FOR THIS EFFECT USING THE EXPERIMENTAL VALUES OF CSS.

Measurements are reported of the difference ΔσL between proton-proton total cross sections for parallel and antiparallel spin states and of the parameter CLL for proton-proton elastic scattering near 90°, for thirteen energies between 300 and 800 MeV. The ΔσL results agree well with previous ANL ZGS and SIN data, but disagree with recent results from TRIUMF. Attempts to understand the cause of the discrepancy have been unsuccessful, but possible sources are discussed. The ΔσL and CLL results have been used with other experimental data to extract quantities which depend only on spin-singlet, coupled spin-triplet, and spin-triplet partial waves. Structure is found in these quantities, which appears to be associated with the resonantlike D21 and F33 partial waves. Additional similar structure is also found, which may be due either to the P03 partial wave or the (P23,F23) partial-wave pair.
