Antiproton-proton total elastic cross sections at 21 incident momenta in the range 0.69 to 2.43 GeV/ c have been deduced by combining p̄p elastic differential cross sections over a c.m. angular range −0.95 ⩽ cos θ ∗ ⩽ 0.93 with forward elastic cross sections derived from recent real-part measurements and p̄p total cross sections. Two bumps are observed, at M 1 ⋍ 2.155 and M 2 ⋍ 2.345 GeV /c 2 , having widths of Г 1 ∼ 0.135 and Г 2 ∼ 0.135 GeV /c 2 . Corresponding structures in other p̄p reaction channels are discussed.

The p p and p n elastic differential cross sections have been extracted from the reaction p d→ p pn in which the deuteron breaks up. The incident antiproton momenta were 0.480, 0.735 and 0.940 GeV/ c , and the range of the momentum transfers was 0.04 < ∣ t ∣ < 0.7 (GeV/ c ) 2 . Both p p and p n differential cross sections are diffraction-like, with structure similar to the higher-momentum data.

The p¯p total inelastic cross section has been measured in a hydrogen bubble chamber for p¯ momenta from 100 to 550 MeV/c. Below 200 MeV/c the cross section increases rapidly to several barns. From this behavior it is inferred that high partial waves, perhaps to L=3, are important in the annihilation at the lowest momenta studied. An abrupt change in the momentum dependence of the total absorption cross section occurs at about 350 MeV/c in the vicinity of previously observed structure in backward elastic scattering.

In an experiment on K--proton interactions in a hydrogen bubble chamber, the cross sections and angular distributions have been studied for elastic and charge-exchange scattering, and charged sigma hyperon production in the momentum range 90-300 MeV/c. Good agreement is found with previous cross sections except for the charge-exchange channel where the new values are 60% larger. The production distributions of the charged sigma hyperons and the polarisation of the Sigma + hyperon clearly indicate that P waves are present down to about 150 MeV/c, much lower than previously reported.

The interactions of 604 MeV π− mesons in a hydrogen bubble chamber have been systematically analyzed. In 33 000 pictures a total of 8052 usable events were found, corresponding to cross sections of 18.9±1.3 mb for σ(elastic), 4.98±0.54 mb for σ(π−pπ0), 7.87±0.91 mb for σ(π−nπ+), 14.0±1.0 mb for σ(neutrals), with σ(two−pionproduction)<0.2 mb, for a total cross section of 45.9±1.9 mb at this energy. The angular distribution for elastic scattering was fitted with a fifth-order polynomial in cosθ which gave a value of dσdΩ(0°) consistent with dispersion theory. The pion-pion effective-mass distributions for both single-pion-production channels showed pronounced peaking at high mass values, strongly inconsistent with simple isobar-production kinematics. Simple one-pion exchange does not appear to play a significant role.

K+p and K+d total cross sections were measured in the momentum range 0.57-1.16 GeV/c using a secondary, separated kaon beam of the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory Bevatron and conventional transmission-counter techniques. p p elastic total and differential cross sections were measured at 17 incident momenta in the range 374–680 MeV/ c . No prominent feature was seen in them to clearly indicate the existence of the S-meson. There is, however, a small enhancement at the S-meson mass, which is equivalent to the elastic total cross section of 4.6 ± 2.1 mb. The behavior of the Legendre expansion coefficients of the angular distributions with incident momentum agrees well the predictions of the OBE model of Bryan and Phillips.

Measurements have been made of the differential cross section and asymmetry A on for p p elastic scattering at 15 incident momenta between 497 MeV/ c and 1550 MeV/ c . The angular range where both particles have enough energy to traverse target and setup has been covered. The results are compared with predictions of various N N potential models. None of these models fully explains the present results, although the general trend of the data is predicted correctly.

We report here the results from an experiment to obtain differential cross sections for K−p elastic scattering in the laboratory momentum region from 1.4 to 1.9 GeV/c. These data span the region of a bump in the K−p total cross section at an energy of 2.05 GeV. Approximately 20000 elastic events were obtained at each of four momenta with an angular coverage of 0.9≥cosθc.m.≥−0.9. The data are intended to aid in phase-shift analyses of the resonances causing the bump in the total cross section and to study dip structures at constant values of the Mandelstam variables t and u.

There is no significant enhancement near the X0 production threshold. However, a small effect of ~ 3 standard deviations is present, having mass 1898.8 MeV and width ~5MeV, and appearing at an incident-pion momentum of 1435 MeV/c. Elastic π+−p scattering at 1.1 Bev and elastic p−p scattering at 582 Mev have been measured using a propane bubble chamber. On the basis of 661 identified π+−p elastic scatterings found in the scanning of 1.726×106 cm of pion track, the total elastic cross section is found to be 12.3±1.2 mb. The differential cross section is rather isotropic at large angles and exhibits a strong peak for small forward scattering angles. If the forward peak is interpreted as diffraction scattering according to the optical model, the data are best fitted by a proton with a π+−p interaction radius, R=(0.99−0.11+0.13)×10−13 cm and an opacity, O=0.70−0.07+0.06. The total cross section for p−p elastic scattering at 582 Mev was found to be 24.2±1.6 mb on the basis of 2442 elastic scatterings observed in the scanning of 3.000×106 cm of proton track. Both differential and total p−p cross sections are in excellent agreement with the results of counter experiments in this energy region.

We measured elastic-scattering angular distributions for π++p scattering at 1.5, 2.0, and 2.5 BeV/c using spark chambers to detect scattered pions and protons. A bump that decreases in amplitude with increasing momentum is observed in the backward hemisphere in the 1.5- and 2.0-BeV/c distributions, but is not observed in the 2.5-BeV/c distributions. It appears reasonable to attribute this phenomenon to the 1.45-BeV/c resonance observed in the π++p total cross section. The data are compared with π−+p data and are found to support the theoretical prediction that the scattering cross sections for both charge states should become equal at high energies. We fit the angular distributions with a power series in cosθ*, and compare the extrapolated values for the scattering cross section in the backward direction with the calculation of the neutron-exchange pole contribution to the cross section. The "elementary" neutron-pole term contribution is calculated to be 90 mb/sr at 2.0 BeV/c, in violent disagreement with the extrapolated value, ≈0.5 mb/sr.

Differential cross sections for π+p elastic scattering in the momentum region 1.2 to 2.3 GeV/c are presented for the center-of-mass angular range 0.9>cosθ>−0.9. Typically, 50 000 events were obtained at each of 16 momenta using magnetostrictive-readout wire spark chambers to detect the particles scattered from a liquid hydrogen target. The results are compared to those of the CERN-71 phase-shift analysis. The well-known dips at t≅−0.7 (GeV/c)2 and at u′=−0.2 (GeV/c)2 are observed. In addition, structure is seen at constant u′=−1.3 (GeV/c)2. The results of a pion attenuation study in iron are also presented.

Differential cross sections for elastic π−p scattering were measured at eight energies for positive pions and seven energies for negative pions. Energies ranged from 310 to 650 MeV. These measurements were made at the 3-GeV proton synchrotron at Saclay, France. A beam of pions from an internal BeO target was directed into a liquid-hydrogen target. Fifty-one scintillation counters and a matrix-coincidence system were used to measure simultaneously elastic events at 21 angles and charged inelastic events at 78 π−p angle pairs. Events were detected by coincidence of pulses indicating the presence of an incident pion, scattered pion, and recoil proton, and the results were stored in the memory of a pulse-height analyzer. Various corrections were applied to the data and a least-squares fit was made to the results at each energy. The form of the fitting function was a power series in the cosine of the center-of-mass angle of the scattered pion. Integration under the fitted curves gave values for the total elastic cross sections (without charge exchange). The importance of certain angular-momentum states is discussed. The π−−p data are consistent with a D13 resonant state at 600 MeV, but do not necessarily require such a resonant state.

Differential cross sections for the elastic scattering of positive pi mesons by protons were measured at the Berkeley Bevatron at pion laboratory kinetic energies between 500 and 1600 MeV. Fifty scintillation counters and a matrix coincidence system were used to identify incoming pions and detect the recoil proton and pion companions. Results were fitted with a power series in the cosine of the center-of-mass scattering angle, and total elastic cross sections were obtained by integrating under the fitted curves. The coefficients of the cosine series are displayed, plotted versus the laboratory kinetic energy of the pion. The most striking features of these curves are the large positive value of the coefficient of cos6θ*, and the large negative value of the coefficient of cos4θ*, both of which maximize in the vicinity of the 1350-MeV peak in the total cross section. These results indicate that the most predominant state contributing to the scattering at the 1350-MeV peak has total angular momentum J=72, since the coefficients for terms above cos6θ* are negligible at this energy. One possible explanation is that the 1350-MeV peak is the result of an F72 resonance lying on the same Regge-pole trajectory as the (32, 32) resonance near 195 MeV.

Differential cross sections for the elastic scattering of negative pi mesons on protons (π−−p→π−−p) were measured at the Berkeley Bevatron at five laboratory kinetic energies of the pion between 500 and 1000 MeV. The results were least-squares fitted with a power series in the cosine of the center-of-mass scattering angle, and total elastic cross sections for π−−p→π−−p were obtained by integrating under the fitted curves. The coefficients of the cosine series are shown plotted versus the incident pion laboratory kinetic energy. These curves display as a striking feature a large value of the coefficient of cos5θ* peaking in the vicinity of the 900-MeV resonance. This implies that a superposition of F52 and D52 partial waves is prominent in the scattering at this energy, since the coefficients for terms above cos5θ* are negligible. One possible explanation is that the F52 enhancement comes from an elastic resonance in the isotopic spin T=12 state, consistent with Regge-pole formalism, and the D52 partial-wave state may be enhanced by inelastic processes. At 600 MeV the values of the coefficients do not seem to demand the prominence of any single partial-wave state, although the results are compatible with an enhancement in the J=32 amplitude. A table listing quantum numbers plausibly associated with the various peaks and "shoulders" seen in the π±−p total cross-section curves is presented.

Total and differential cross sections are presented for the reactions K − p → K − p and K − p → K o n at 13 points in the c.m. energy range 1915–2168 MeV. An energy-dependent partial-wave analysis is carried out on these data together with the polarisation measurements of Daum et al. [1] and the total cross section measurements [2] within this energy range. The well known Σ(1915), Σ(2030) and Λ(2100) are observed and their resonance parameters measured. Structure is also found in the D 05 and F 07 waves. An SU(3) analysis of the 5 2 + octet, 7 2 + decuplet and 7 2 − singlet gives generally good agreement between theory and experiment except that the elasticity of the Σ(1915) is experimentally rather larger than predicted.

Measurements are reported of the differential cross section for the reaction π − +p→ ω +n from threshold to a final-state c.m. momentum P ∗ of 200 MeV /c . The previously reported fall in total cross section σ/P ∗ below about 100 MeV/ c is again seen. The differential cross section remains close to isotropic over the entire range. The interactions of 775 MeV (kinetic energy) π−-mesons in a hydrogen bubble chamber have been studied. Total and partial crosssections have been determined with the following results: σ (total) = (39.0±1.6) mb, σ (elastic)=(14.8±0.7) mb, σ (π− + p → all neutrals) = (9.0 ± 0.5) mb, σ (π− + p = π− + π+ + n) = (9.8 ± 0.5) mb, and σ (π− + p = π− + p + π0) = (4.8 ± 0.3) mb. The elastic-scattering angular distribution has been fitted with a Legendre polynomial series terminated at the fifth order. Various angular and effective-mass distributions of single-π production are presented and discussed in terms of the Olsson-Yodh and O.P.E. models.

Interactions of 683-MeV/c negative pions with protons were investigated using the BNL 14-in. hydrogen bubble chamber in a 17-kG field. Two thousand elastic scatterings were analyzed, yielding a cross section of 18.9±1.0 mb. No evidence for powers of cosθ higher than the second was observed in the elastic angular distribution. The angular distribution obtained was dσdω=(0.384±0.026)+(1.70±0.06)cosθ+(3.36±0.11)cos2θ mb/sr. The single-pion production reactions π−+p→π−+π0+p and π−+p→π−+π++n were studied in detail. A total of 441 π0 productions and 833 π+ productions were analyzed giving cross sections of 3.99±0.50 and 7.50±0.80 mb, respectively. The differential distributions for these inelastic processes are presented and compared with the predictions of the model of Olsson and Yodh. The distribution of events on the Dalitz plots for π0 production is accounted for by the model. However, for the π+ reaction, the model (so far developed) does not describe adequately the distribution of events on the Dalitz plot. In particular, the model fails to account for the enhancement at high (π+π−) effective masses in ππ mass distribution. The center-of-mass angular distributions for π0 and π+ production reactions are presented and compared with the model.

Report on the investigation of interactions in π−p collisions at a pion momentum of 1.59 GeV/c, by means of the 50 cm Saclay liquid hydrogen bubble chamber, operating in a magnetic field of 17.5 kG. The results obtained concern essentially the elastic scattering and the inelastic scattering accompanied by the production of either a single pion in π−p→ pπ−π0 and nπ−π+ interactions, or by more than one pion in four-prong events. The observed angular distribution for the elastic scattering in the diffraction region, can be approximated by an exponential law. From the extrapolated value, thus obtained for the forward scattering, one gets σel= (9.65±0.30) mb. Effective mass spectra of π−π0 and π−π+ dipions are given in case of one-pion production. Each of them exhibits the corresponding ρ− or ρ0 resonances in the region of ∼ 29μ2 (μ = mass of the charged pion). The ρ peaks are particularly conspicuous for low momentum transfer (Δ2) events. The ρ0 distribution presents a secondary peak at ∼31μ2 due probably to the ω0 → π−π+ process. The branching ratio (ω0→ π+π−)/(ω0→ π+π− 0) is estimated to be ∼ 7%. The results are fairly well interpreted in the frame of the peripheral interaction according to the one-pion exchange (OPE) model, Up to values of Δ2/μ2∼10. In particular, the ratio ρ−/ρ0 is of the order of 0.5, as predicted by this model. Furthermore, the distribution of the Treiman-Yang angle is compatible with an isotropic one inside the ρ. peak. The distribution of\(\sigma _{\pi ^ + \pi ^ - } \), as calculated by the use of the Chew-Low formula assumed to be valid in the physical region of Δ2, gives a maximum which is appreciably lower than the value of\(12\pi \tilde \lambda ^2 = 120 mb\) expected for a resonant elastic ππ scattering in a J=1 state at the peak of the ρ. However, a correcting factor to the Chew-Low formula, introduced by Selleri, gives a fairly good agreement with the expected value. Another distribution, namely the Δ2 distribution, at least for Δ2 < 10 μ2, agrees quite well with the peripheral character of the interaction involving the ρ resonance. π− angular distributions in the rest frame of the ρ exhibit a different behaviour for the ρ− and for the ρ0. Whereas the first one is symmetrical, as was already reported in a previous paper, the latter shows a clear forward π− asymmetry. The main features of the four-prong results are: 1) the occurrence of the 3/2 3/2 (ρπ+) isobar in π−p → pπ+π−π− events and 2) the possible production of the ω0→ π+π−π0 resonance in π−p→ pπ−π+π−π0 events. No ρ’s were observed in four-prong events.

Measurements of K + p elastic scattering have been carried out at 13 momenta between 432 MeV/ c and 939 MeV/ c using spark chambers. The data establish unambiguously the constructive interference of the Coulomb and nuclear amplitudes at 432 MeV/ c . The elastic cross section is found to be independent of momentum through the range covered. The phase shifts for S, P, D and F waves are obtained in an energy dependent analysis in which higher waves are held at theoretical values. The initial behaviour ofthe P, D and F amplitudes is quite close to that predicted by the calculation of the peripheral partial waves. The cross-sections for elastic scattering, for all processes involving annihilation, and for all other inelastic processes are respectively σel=(16.3±0.6)mb,σannlbil=(22.5±2.0)mb, σinel=(24.8±2.0)mb. TheN * 1:38 is present both in the single and multiple pion production channels. For the reaction MediaObjects/11539_2007_Article_BF02720569_f1.jpg a cross-section of (1.05±0.21) mb was obtained. Cross-sections forN * 1238 production in other channels are also given. Some indication of the presence ofI=1/2 isobars was found in the nucleon-pion and the nucleon-two-pion systems. The inelastic nonannihilation reactions were found to be strongly peripheral. The one-pion exchange model including either a form factor or corrections for absorption was applied to the reaction MediaObjects/11539_2007_Article_BF02720569_f2.jpg . Neither version of the model could correctly account for all features of the reaction. The average number of pions in the annihilation was found to be 7.3±0.6. The presence of an asymmetry in the angular distribution of the charged pions was confirmed at this energy; it is due mostly to high-energy pions. The production of ρ and ω mesons was observed in various annihilation channels. Rates of up to 80% for ρ production and up to 15% for ω production were obtained by fitting phase-space and Breit-Wigner curves to the effective-mass distributions of different channels.

We present data from a spark-chamber study of K+p elastic scattering between 432 and 939 MeV/c, over the range −0.6<cosθc.m.<+0.7. With measurements at 13 momenta, and between 2000 events at the lowest momentum and 5000 events at the highest momentum, there is a major improvement over previous data. The elastic cross sections deduced from the differential cross sections are almost independent of momentum through the range covered. The data are inconsistent with counter measurements of the total cross section which suggest a sharp shoulder in the cross section at about 700 MeV/c.

Data are presented from a high statistics bubble chamber experiment to study K − p interactions in the c.m. energy range 1775 to 1957 MeV. For the reactions K − p → K − p, K − p → K 0 n , K − p → Λπ 0 and K − p → Σ ± π ∓ channel cross sections, differential cross sections and, where appropriate, polarisation distributions have been obtained. The channel cross sections for K − p → Σ 0 π 0 are presented. In general the results are in agreement with those previously published although a significant discrepancy has been found in the Σ ± π ∓ cross sections at the lower energies. New measurements of the Σ ± lifetimes have also been obtained ( τ Σ − = 1.49 ± 0.03 × 10 −10 sec, τ Σ + = 0.807 ± 0.013 × 10 −10 sec).
